The biggest hurdle for Michele Bachmann to overcome in running for the Republican nomination is her penchant for making over-the-top statements for political effect which turn out not only to be untrue but ill-advised as well. She could get away with this as a backbencher in congress but now message discipline is paramount, as is focus. Her appearance on Fox this weekend was focused, and she benefitted a lot from being able to play the victim from Chris Wallace's clumsiness of calling her "a flake". Another appearance on CBS's Face The Nation was less assured, and at times cringe-worthy. This one with George Stephanopoulos today on Good Morning America casts real doubts whether she can handle the scrutiny from being seen as a legitimate presidential candidate, as ridiculous as it is to even write those words in connection with Michele Bachmann.

Her defensiveness and unwillingness to ever, ever admit wrong is Palin-esque. It's not a trait or a habit Americans will find endearing.

Stephanopoulos: But that’s not what you said. You said that the Founding Fathers worked tirelessly to end slavery.

Bachmann: Well if you look at one of our Founding Fathers, John Quincy Adams, that’s absolutely true. He was a very young boy when he was with his father serving essentially as his father’s secretary. He tirelessly worked throughout his life to make sure that we did in fact one day eradicate slavery….

Stephanopoulos: He wasn’t one of the Founding Fathers – he was a president, he was a Secretary of State, he was a member of Congress, you’re right he did work to end slavery decades later. But so you are standing by this comment that the Founding Fathers worked tirelessly to end slavery?

Bachmann: Well, John Quincy Adams most certainly was a part of the Revolutionary War era. He was a young boy but he was actively involved.

She said that with a straight face.

On abolishing the minimum wage:

Stephanopoulos: Let me try one more time, so you are saying that the minimum wage is one of those regulations you’d take a look at, you’d try to eliminate it?

Bachmann: Well what I’m saying is that I think we need to look at all regulations, whatever--whatever ones are inhibiting job growth that’s what we need to --

Stephanopoulos: And the minimum wage is one of them?

[Long pregnant pause here.]

Bachmann: All regulations George. I think every department. We have just too much expansion of government and so what we need to do is tamp that down so that the American people can keep more of what they make.

Such performances cast real doubts whether she can last through to the primary season. That would be a real shame because she, like few others, illuminate what the modern-day Republican party has become.

It a sane world the biggest hurdlle for her to overcome would be her total lack of intellectual and moral (she lies, repeatedly, without shame or concern) qualifications for the job of president.

Of course in a sane world not one of these republican presidential contenders would be taken seriously by anyone.

why does this sound disingenuous? [other than the fact that it came forth from the lips of ms. ingenuous]

i have a sinking suspicion that the "free" market fundies, those that have a religious fetish for unleashing the market in capital-friendly ways, like bachmann, would only "look" to remove regulations that would bolster business interests. and regulations designed to protect business interests (copyright laws, intellectual property rights, branding, etc.) are sacrosanct...

But kiss those environmental, health and safety laws goodbye: they inhibit business growth and cost capital (which means businesses will claim they can't hire or have to raise their prices, as usual).

...John Quincy Adams was born to John Adams and his wife[6] Abigail Adams in what is now Quincy, Massachusetts. The John Quincy Adams Birthplace is now part of Adams National Historical Park and open to the public. He was named for his mother's s maternal grandfather, Colonel John Quincy, after whom Quincy, Massachusetts, is named.[7][pn 1]

In 1779 Adams began a diary that he kept until just before he died in 1848.[8]

Adams first learned of the Declaration of Independence from the letters his father wrote his mother from the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

Much of Adams' youth was spent accompanying his father overseas. John Adams served as an American envoy to France from 1778 until 1779 and to the Netherlands from 1780 until 1782, and the younger Adams accompanied his father on these journeys.

Adams acquired an education at institutions such as Leiden University. For nearly three years, at the age of 14, he accompanied Francis Dana as a secretary on a mission to St. Petersburg, Russia, to obtain recognition of the new United States. He spent time in Finland, Sweden, and Denmark and, in 1804, published a travel report of Silesia.[9]

During these years overseas, Adams became fluent in French and Dutch and became familiar with German and other European languages. He entered Harvard College and graduated in 1788, Phi Beta Kappa.[10] (Adams House at Harvard College is named in honor of Adams and his father.)

He apprenticed as a lawyer with Theophilus Parsons in Newburyport, Massachusetts, from 1787 to 1789. He was admitted to the bar in 1791 and began practicing law in Boston.

Adams was elected a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts after leaving office, the only president ever to do so, serving for the last 17 years of his life with far greater success than he had achieved in the presidency. Animated by his growing revulsion against slavery,[4] Adams became a leading opponent of the Slave Power and argued that if a civil war ever broke out the president could abolish slavery by using his war powers, a correct prediction of Abraham Lincoln's use of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Adams predicted the Union's dissolution over the slavery issue, but said that if the South became independent there would be a series of bloody slave insurrections.[5]

This stupid moron originally said that the "Founding Fathers" worked tirelessly to end slavery.

So, let's give her the benefit of the doubt and say that it was revolutionary war figures who worked tirelessly to end slavery, even though they were only 8 years old during that time. Who else does Bachmann think besides John Quincy Adams "worked tirelessly" to end slavery? If asked, she'd probably say Abraham Lincoln because although he was not even alive during the revolutionary war, his grandfather was. His grandfather was also named "Abraham Lincoln," and he was a militia captain in the revolutionary war.

No, the grandfather was not a "Founding Father," but he was alive during the Revolutionary War, and his grandson signed the Emancipation Proclamation and was President during the Civil War.

This is the type of twisted logic Bachmann is using to defend her statements.

Once again, I loathe Michelle Bachmann.

John Quincy Adams served as his fathers secretary while he was serving the revolution in France, and later became our first ambassador to Russia while still a teenager.

He was not a founding father, but he was certainly right there on the scene during the early days of the nation.

Andy K's picture

His first ambassadorship was in the Netherlands, an office he assumed in 1794- when he was 27. He was 42-years old when he became the US Ambassador to Russia.

J.Q. Adams was 10-years old when his father was co-authoring the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, and he was in Braintree with his mother. He was not a contributor to the Federalist Papers, nor a delegate to the Constitutional Convention- he was reading the law in 1787, apprenticing under Theophilus Parsons. He couldn't even cast a vote until 1792.

Being alive in the era of the Founders and Framers does not mean that J.Q.A. was a Founder or a Framer. Bachmann is wrong.

As usual, she can’t connect her thoughts and her words and both are usually divorced from reality. I’m sure she meant John Wayne, born Marion Mitchell Morrison in Winterset, Iowa about three hours from Waterloo. John Wayne Gacy aka the Killer Clown who raped and murdered 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978, moved to Waterloo, Iowa in his 20’s and was first arrested for crimes against teen boys there.
I’m sure it was just her usual stupid, half witted, imbecilic, ignorant, half assed researched statement. Even so, if it wasn’t, she would have had something in common with Tea Party darling Ayn Rand, who had a thing for psychopathic serial killer William Edward Hickman, whose gruesome, sadistic dismemberment of 12-year-old girl named Marion Parker in 1927 shocked the nation.

Whether it was her screw up, or that of one of her campaign workers, her inability to keep her ‘facts’ straight without mixing completely different wikipedia or google postings might not be so disturbing if it didn’t seem to be a daily or sometimes hourly happening. Whatever, I hope she doesn’t decide to give a talk about Ron Paul because she would probably come up with a lot of information mixed from postings on Ron Paul and Ru Paul!
