A reminder that an astonishing 13,686 service members were discharged due to the stupid and asinine "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Hopefully scenes such as this one will become commonplace.

via WVEC.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule on Wednesday when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted "first kiss" on the dock after one of them returned from 80 days at sea.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, Calif., descended from the USS Oak Hill amphibious landing ship and shared a quick kiss with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles. The crowd screamed and waved flags around them.

Both women, ages 22 and 23 respectively, are fire controlmen in the Navy. They met at training school and have been dating for two years.

Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return. Sailors and their loved ones bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity.

Shocking !!

Isn't a raffle a form of gambling............that's illegal.........right.........SNARK. And that was at least a $5.00 kiss.

The first casualty of republicanism is the truth.
Party politics are not only undemocratic, they are antidemocratic.

..beautiful women in uniform kissing.

You would have to scour the farthest recesses of right wing lunacy to find a human being that has a problem with this.

When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in excess body fat & carrying a misspelled sign.

stenton24's picture

why they need to be 'beautiful' or even what that means. What is important is that in 100 years, the question will be 'what was the big deal'? In regard to that, we have made progress.

daganium's picture

..don't need to be beautiful; they are beautiful.

If I see a beautiful woman I am going to call it like I see it.

I'm not interested in Internet evaluations of semantics & politically correct framing.

They're beautiful women! I know what dag meant. Why don't you? Mind and body, Stenton. These wonderful people are happy to show their love for one another in public. Or is that your issue that you feel the minute somebody says 'beautiful' they mean 'hot'. Build that bridge, please.

What the hell are your pet box turtles doing?

Now go after those two ladies assholes...I dare you.

This is one of a few things in this era I can point to as progress, it's long overdue but it's worth celebrating.

I think it's rather telling that these women are very attractive, VERY attractive... and the fact someone sold 1$ raffle tickets to watch them kiss...Very strip club!! The prettier high school girls charge the boys a dollar each to watch them kiss each other too... wonder what the reaction would be if these women looked like the average lesbian and not the lipstick lesbians that they are.

While everyone's rejoicing the historic kiss we're still over looking the Pretty VS Ugly discrimination that will never go away.

for the record I'm totally pro equal rights for all but this just seems very exploitative and playing into the male lesbian fantasy, because when it comes right down to it most lesbians look more masculine than I, a 35 year old 6'2 250lb. male with a perpetual 5 O' clock shadow.

you may now commence with your shredding of the one that thinks differently from the group...

Haha, they didn't sell tickets to watch them kiss. The raffle was to see which would be the first couple to kiss. This couple won.

I misread the last line of the article... Blush :)

everything else I wrote though, I'm solid on!!

Sailors on the ship were able to buy tickets for a raffle and the winning ticket gave its purchaser the honor of being the first to kiss their partner on their return from sea. A woman whose partner happened to be another woman won. Casting aspersions about the legitimacy of their intimacy because they happen to be what many might consider attractive is pretty unfair of you and your little rant about 'average lesbians' belies your BS about being pro equal rights or giving a damn about pretty vs ugly discrimination that has nothing to do with this story. This is not exploitative, this is just the first time it happened between gay partners and so the press was interested and bothered to cover it.

You probably will be shredded and I guess that gives you your jollies since you swing that way, but you really are being a bit pathetic with your obvious trolling for a reaction by making asinine remarks about masculine lesbians. Grow up, man.

QSE32's picture

John m white... way to be predictable.
Late,

JohnMWhite's picture

At least I read the story correctly. But if it's predictable to stand up to bigoted trolls who need their brains dragged into the 21st century along with their knuckles, consider me a really boring, predictable kind of person.

QSE32's picture

you mean like calling someone a troll whom you don't know, being very elitist in that you think that anyone that doesn't agree with you to the tee is a knuckle dragger... Bigoted in that you think you're some kinda white knight...

Yeah your predictable and bigoted, good for you!

You know, I can see that and admit that I Misread the end of the article, you cannot admit you can't understand my posts, which means you probably shouldn't be bragging about reading the story correctly (or maybe you should, maybe that doesn't happen all that often for you)
because your comprehension leaves something to be desired...

At least i can learn from my mistakes good luck to you since you can't even recognize yours.

Late,
QSE32

QSE32's picture

I didn't cast aspersions about their legitimacy... I cast aspersions about the military exploiting them... which still could be the case since it's not too hard to rig a raffle...

"and your little rant about 'average lesbians' belies your BS about being pro equal rights or giving a damn about pretty vs ugly discrimination that has nothing to do with this story."

It has everything to do with the story.. are you gonna sell DADT to the average cornhusker with images of danny devito and drew cary kissing?? I think not...

Rather lucky that this is the first time a gay couples were able to be in the drawing AND a gay couple won on the first try AND they happened to be women above average in the looks department.

being shredded doesn't give me jollies, it saddens me that group think prevails in a group that's supposed to define themselves through their tolerance.
Late,
QSE32

JohnMWhite's picture

It doesn't include letting people make cruel, snide and bigoted (nice try to re-appropriate the word, but people here actually know what it means) remarks about lesbians that were childish and outdated in the 70s. Tolerance involves challenging such ridiculous stereotypes wherever they appear.

As for casting aspersions, you did say this:

"The prettier high school girls charge the boys a dollar each to watch them kiss each other too..."

What else is that supposed to mean? You made it plain you thought they were doing it for attention.

QSE32's picture

liberals can't win or survive with members like you in their midst...

Yes, I did say,
""The prettier high school girls charge the boys a dollar each to watch them kiss each other too...""

but if your comprehension skills were as good as you like to brag, you would've taken into account the context in which it was framed, which is the military set this up... which is fine on the surface but NOT representative of average looking lesbians but in order to sell DADT to the normal lunkhead (this probably often includes you most of the time, not sure how you came out correct on DADT probably an accident, I'm sure) they aren't gonna send out to butch looking ladies, but two pretty ladies thus doing more damage by exploiting their relationship and reducing these women' relationship as sexual objects for the male lesbian fantasy.
I'm sure you consider yourself open minded, which is hysterical considering there's no depth to you and you blindly yell on about how smart you are at pointing out what seems to you as obvious...
Dig deeper Columbo before someone uses you as the tool you are.
Late,
QSE32

Oh, and DADT is gone...there is no need to sell it to lunkheads, sunshine. This photo says it all: DADT was a failure as a policy, and it was right to repeal it. These are 2 normal, homosexual women, who are displaying their affection in public, just as thousands of heterosexual couples do every day. What isn't average about that, Mr. KnowItAllAboutLesbians?

JohnMWhite's picture

I had a feeling you were just a troll looking for a reaction, and I was right. You're now arguing black is white, saying your totally clear statement meant something totally different in context when the context you provide doesn't have anything to do with that statement. How is suggesting that this was in any way like girls agreeing to take money from boys to kiss for them in any way not a suggestion that the love these two women happen to feel for one another is fake?

And you put a lot of effort into suggesting I have a high opinion of myself when all I said was "I read the article correctly". It's like you're constructing a totally different conversation because you're bored.

And you still maintain this myth about 'average looking lesbians' because you're a vicious bigot who just relishes the opportunity to put people down, though it has already been pointed out to you that you're not likely to find all that many dumpy looking people in the armed forces to begin with - it is full of young, fit, healthy people, and such people are often attractive. Though it's not as if you get a great look at these women's faces, so all this nonsense about them being used to sell something that is already a done deal anyway is complete bunk. You're just here to get off on being able to treat other human beings cruelly. I won't play with you any more.

All I can say, "You GO, girls!"
Next up, repeal of DOMA and a new Federal law prohibiting marriage discrimination. Maybe even a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as between two American citizens of legal age, regardless of color, creed, sex, or religiosity.

As a resident of Placerville off and on during my life, this particularly pleased me. As a Navy Vet, it is a happy moment demonstrating what the hell it was I was fighting for. As a human being, I felt inspired that SOME progress is being made despite the forces gathered to keep people in the dark and hating each other.

GO.

When we finally accepted that “All human behavior starts at the conception”. A sperm and a zygote is when everything happens when genes mix. We all know about birth defects like small or giant, mental retarded because of gene 23,,Slow oxygen at birth. Gays are the least problem because Socrates ,Da Vinci ,Michelangelo were genius and known to be gays. The other day I heard that also pedophiles as well as serial killers are born like that. Every pedophiles put behind bars once out of jail has kill their victims they are never kept long enough. We should demand more research on genes but refuse to those.

Nicole Belle's picture

Socrates was an ugly old man with a much younger wife, who bore him three sons. There's an essay by a contemporary about how irresponsible it was of Socrates to abandon his wife and boys with his execution.

Plato was allegedly gay, although my husband got his doctorate in Logic with his dissertation on Plato's Dialogues and will argue against that all day long if you let him.

Frankly, I don't think it matters much. There are people in DC--whose faces you see on TV regularly-- now who are capitalizing on homophobia and playing to those base bigotries within the GOP and they themselves are gay.

Crustyolcarpenter's picture

important omission. Zygotes are produced by a fertilization event between two haploid cells—an ovum (female gamete) and a sperm cell (male gamete). I don't mean to be nit picky but lets not leave the female out of the equation.

It is all predetermined so we can stop pretending to make decisions? (Isn't that the fundamentalist excuse for every thing they do; Dog made me do it?)

If you read even the first elemental article about human behavior, that argument between nature vs. nurture has been going on for thousands of years.

Neither side has won yet.

It looks like you have determined the answer people have been looking for a a long time.

But I can't help but wonder what the Iraqis widows and Orphans think of this? Do they give a Rat's Ass if the Solider, Sailor or Airman/woman putting a bullet in, dropping a cluster bomb on or firing an offshore Cruise Missile into their love ones is Gay or Straight? What ever the sexual orientation they all serve their Global Corporate Masters (BP, EXXON, ...).
