Jack Abramoff's Dream
Casino Jack, starring Kevin Spacey, is in limited release right now if you're interested in the machinations of D.C. politics. Part straightforward re-telling of past events, and part fiction based on said events, the two often mix so it's hard to tell what is real and what is a story device. A bit confusing but worthwhile.
Take this short fantasy scene where the real Senator John McCain asks Abramoff a question in a Senate hearing. Abramoff daydreams what he'd really like to say to McCain, and others situated in the room who've benefited by his actions but are now there condemning him, instead of invoking his Fifth Amendment rights as he knows he must.
This scene is NSFW. Easily Kevin Spacey's best performance since Recount, and maybe his best in a film role since winning an Oscar for American Beauty.

The actor right next to "McCain" is John Hickenlooper, he makes a cameo in this.
The film was directed by his cousin, George Hickenlooper.
.....to post this incredible video.

correctly) was an ex-alabama governor falsely accused (during the bush/cheney coup) of bribery, he was later acquitted. Just another case of wrong-wing political prosecution.

I favor non-fiction reading, don't watch all that many films, and short change myself as a result. I tend to forget how powerful truth-in-fiction can be.
Whoever directed that movie missed a golden opportunity to pay homage to Capra and Jimmy Stewart in that scene, by not orchestrating McCain attempting suicide (within earshot but just offscreen).
was to selling this crap- bush, iraq, deregulation- anything they wanted.
McCranky sounded extra old. Was that his real voice or an actor?

Sadly the director of this film George Hickenlooper died before the film was released. Looks like it could be the best work of his career.
On another note the documentary on Abramoff is available on Netflix streaming if you are looking for a more factual portrayal of his life and deeds, it shares a similar title: 'Casino Jack and the United States of Money'. I highly recommend it, both entertaining and informative.
Actually, a direct rip-off of that scene by Pacino. And Pacino did it better.
Absolutely, "there's something goin' on around here..." nobody has even touched it yet in any what, where or how, not even deniro...!

I was reading about what is going on in the Ivory Coast these days, and as I was reading about that country and then other countries in the region guess whose name popped up? Yup, Jack Abramoff. Apparently, during the Reagan years, Abramoff went over to Africa to prop up some dictator (I think in Liberia) who was fighting I think it was Jonas Savmibi, and if it wasn't Savimbi then it was some other freedom fighter who was fighting the US and the colonial powers as well as the corporate powers who didn't like African independence.
If you ask me Jack Abramoff personifies how the majority of the world perceives America. Most Americans, I imagine, have no idea how evil America has been done since at least Reagan if not Eisenhower but perhaps much, much longer. And, then America only did a little good perhaps in a few places and times and I'm most definitely not counting Lincoln as doing good by America. Granted, I would be hard pressed to point to anything positive America has ever done (including the way we rest on our laurels pretending we saved the world in WWII when it's more like we made the war possible in the first place by funding both sides--I wonder if that sounds familiar--and Russia actually saved the world by defeating Hitler).
