Grayson: GOP Health Plan = You're Sick? Die Quickly. UPDATED
By scarce Wednesday Sep 30, 2009 8:00amIt's a very simple plan. Here it is. The Republican health care plan for America: Don't get sick. That's right, don't get sick. If you have insurance, don't get sick. If you don't have insurance, don't get sick. If you're sick, don't get sick.
...but it's not quite a foolproof plan so the backup plan in case you do get sick
If you get sick America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly. That's right. The Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick.
Naturally Republicans like the noxious Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) took exception to these type of tactics being employed against Republicans, the same over-the-top kind of stuff they employ on a daily basis, calling on Grayson to apologize. Unlike many other Democrats he has not. Good for him.
UPDATE: The wingnuts are furious at Grayson for these remarks, and are already ginning up a campaign to target him for electoral defeat. Patrick McHenry tweets: "Will Pelosi hold vote to reprimand #Grayson?"
UPDATE:
Alan Grayson is also part of Blue America's "No Means No! Afghanistan project ao please--- throw him some jack.
UPDATE II
We've set up a new act blue page for Alan Grayson called: Getting Grayson's Back

...balls of steel!
I love this guy.
Why can't all Dems in the House and Senate be like him?
The Republi KLAN party health care plan: Marry a Canadian!
Karen Ignani had a scam
whose fleecing was approved by Snowe
and everywhere Ignani went
the fleecing was sure to grow
Please answer this facebook poll on health care

Why does it take almost super-human courage to just tell it like it is? And why the hell is any democrat wanting to "compromise" on this? How do you compromise with nothing?
The Republicans want to kill Mickey!
Actually Disney sure wouldn't mind because they are one of the companies that has participated in taking out corporate life insurance policies (COLI) aka DEAD Peasant Life Insurance without the consent of their own employees. This allows them to not only borrow against the insurance plans to pay for other investments and CEO perks but it also allows them to receive a tax writeoff as well. The big bonus would ofcourse come if Mickey DIES.
Minnie wouldn't see any of it either.
So why does the screen-grab read D-Florida?
I read it again
Never mind...(my best Emily Letilla).

I'll bet there'll be a lot of money thrown at his 'Thug opponent when he's up for re-election.
The Thugs can't find anyone with name recognition. That isn't mired in corruption.
The most discouraging thing in this whole debate is how quickly some Democrats seem to be willing to just roll over and "compromise" with people that have NO interest in compromising.
It feels GREAT to see/hear someone willing to give as good as he takes.
Democrats love to roll over. They love it doggie style from the Blue Dogs.
Doggie style is fun IF both parties are getting something out of it. This is not the case with health care.
so he's got that going for him too. I like Grayson a lot. We need a few hundred more just like him.
He's being too kind. I think most repuks don't care if you die slowly...
If you die slowly, it costs the insurance companies more money. That's the whole point to the backup plan.
the repugs want us to die slowly, so their corporate overlords, the insurance companies can squeeze even more profits from us.
If you're still alive, you can still work for minimum wage.
At least it hasn't turned me into a Rethug.
Grayson is the kind of leader the Dems have needed for a long time.
And thank you, Orlando, Eustis, Ocala.
Eustis? Is that really a name?
About 20K people, about an hour NW of downtown O'town:
http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?lo...
I have a T-Shirt that says, "Get Useless in Eustis". ;o}
of Cletus, the god of lite beer and trucknutz. In the story, an angry Cletus vomits on Eustis's head and turns him into the Okefenokee Swamp. Thus Eustis becomes the god of used crankcase oil and frog gigging.
the swamp fires here burn for weeks? All that used oil. ;o}
. . . one of my main criticisms of Obama, at least in terms of his approach. People routinely gush over Obama's past service as a law professor (I took a class from him while in law school). But Grayson's actually a trial lawyer -- a point confirmed by his presentation.
The problem is that Obama thinks and talks like a law professor, assuming he can persuade others through intellect and logic. Any trial lawyer worth his salt will tell you, however, that you have to make people feel that injustice has been done -- that's Grayson's approach.
Frankly, the average law student is a poor representative of the average American, and speaking to average Americans as if they're law students isn't likely to (and hasn't thus far) help them figure it out.
Speaker of the House. BRILLIANT.
After the lies of August and the thuggery, it's our turn. Not really lies on Grayson's part. They've been lying about Death Panels for two months and Martha said nothing. She needs to STFU.
...considering that the Rethugs have brought nothing to the table from day one. I think he simply reached a logical assumption.
if they don't like his interpretation of their 'no' health care plan, then provide a plan so we can see what they are really for
I think he is misrepresenting the Republican plan. If you get sick and if you have or don't have health insurance you can stay alive until you have spent all of your savings, your house, and have nothing left then you can die. If you die to quickly the health care industrial complex cannot take all that you have and they want all that you have.
Haven't you heard? If you die too quickly, they'll go after your family, your business partners, and anybody else you may have had breakfast with, to sue THEM for the money they want. They don't care who they ruin, so long as they get to line their pockets.
and then they'll go after your surviving family members...it's $$$, 24/7 for the repub (&blue dog) and their insur/pharma owners.
btw-admire grayson. stands up for what he believes; plays to win, understands that you do what's right and deal with the fall out. unlike the usual passive - codependent dems.
The Obama Administration is correct in that the answer to the medical funding crisis is to withhold medical treatment from old people. The value of a Citizen to the State is the tax receipts that can be reasonably be expected to be generated by him.
Old people cannot generate income and pay taxes. They cost the State money through Social Security and other benefits. Thus they have negative value to the State. They also tend to vote Republican.
President Obama should man up on this one and be honest.
..some of us here don't get the sarcasm without the "snark". And if you're not being sarcastic, you may be on the wrong blog..er, I mean on-line magazine!
The current FOR PROFIT system withholds treatment from the elderly quite well. Many providers don't accept medicare patients, payments for drug plans are too expensive, and insurance companies reject treatment & claims.
Why bring "the State" into it?
That's why we need death panels! Get rid of those expensive seniors who vote republican.
Nice logic. Listen to Beck and Limbaugh much?
They paid into social security all their lives. The payout is simply taking money out of their nest egg.
can anyone on Red State spell? I spent 2 minutes reading comments and I believe my IQ dropped 20 points.
Why is it Dems apologize to reps and reps apologize to Rush?
It's the natural order of things.
..but why would the republican'ts want an apology? He spoke the truth didn't he?
....we need a couple hundred more just like him! Thank you Rep. Grayson!
Won't endorse him in his Democratic Primary next year??
I'll bet there'll be another Democrat running against him....someone from "out of the blue".
And the DNC SHOULD endorse him because he speaks the truth and has been a champion for the people, especially in some of the sessions he's had with Bernanke and other members of the Fed.
He's definitely someone I'll be sending some money to for his next campaign.
Disapproval over Joe Wilson-SC comments was about decorum and lack of respect for the office of the president. It's okay to call the President a liar, just wait your turn and show some respect for the people who elected him.
Grayson D-FL was speaking in the correct forum, in the correct manner. He waited for his turn to speak
Are the conservatives so thin skinned and thick headed that can't see that?
...that Rush's head explodes?
Hope!
The only way I can think Rush's empty skull cavity can explode is if there is some sort of freaky back pressure incident.
I'd rather see it cave in.
Another fake GOP outrage, while once again ignoring policy.
I love this guy.
F*ck the Bush's, Reagans and Cheneys.
F*ck 'em to g*ddam HELL! Greedy c*cksuckers.
my mouth!
Let's hope only words.
Fuuuuuunny YSB! Reeeeeeeal funny
Congressman Tom Price will be offering the following resolution at noon in response to Alan Grayson saying, from the floor of the House, that the Republican health care plan is to not get sick and if you do get sick to “die quickly.” The resolved clause is identical to that the Democrats used against Joe Wilson (R-SC). (from redstate.com a couple minutes ago)
Is that noon Washington time?
Does your company have an life insurance policy on you... that your family will never see a cent from? That will pay hundreds of thousands of tax-free dollars, exceeding the salary of the covered employee many times over, usually on a low-paid worker. Even if the worker dies after they leave the insuring company. A large number of corporations have been getting payoffs and tax shelters from life insurance on their rank and file employees, to the tune of 9 billion dollars a year.
What made this possible? DEREGULATION
Who deregulated? President Ronald Reagan in the glorious 80's
http://open.salon.com/blog/ardee/2009/09/23/d...
at least for once i turned on cpan and saw a democrat speaking. I swear every morning I turn on the span and there is steve king with some outrageous lie, with idiotic display board. god i hate everything about that guy.
....is he the guy with the HUGE hands??
1) don't get sick
2) just send check/pay bill
Grayson is a great Prog. But his seat is not safe. PLEASE send him a little love.
Republicans expect that when you're sick, you'll crawl to your nearest Christian church and beg the holy Jesus to fix your pain and suffering, along with your soul, just as an added bonus. Works every time. And maybe you can sell everything off so that you're eligible to find a charity to help you out. Or try your neighbor; maybe he's a neurologist who's willing to donate his time and skills to making you better, which might not come in as handy if your particular disorder is pancreatic cancer or something he's not fully trained in, but what the heck, it was worth a try. If your neighbor suffers from being a non-medically-trained individual, then it would probably suck to be you. But ONLY if none of these work for you, and ONLY as a last resort, would the Republicans wish for you to die. But, again, only as a last resort, would you mind doing it quickly? (Especially if you're a liberal.) (Thank you for your cooperation.)
you have warmed my heart with your heated words.
White House - are you listening? People seem to understand this kind of simple, straight talk.
And ain't it the truth!
I'm donating money to Rep. Grayson.
BTW, how is it possible for Republicans in the minority to "introduce" *anything* when Democrats were so totally shut out during *their* minority period? Oh, right, I forgot: Republicans are assholes and Democrats are enablers of assholes.
So the Republicans are trying to get Rep. Alan Grayson to apologize for accusing the Republicans of having a healthcare plan that involves people "Dying early". Well, considering that every single day, on every single issue, leading Republicans accuse people like you and me of hating America, hugging terrorists, and wanting to take away all our freedoms and destroy the country... I think calling Republicans "assholes" once in a while is downright politically correct by comparison!
and wee georgie steph sucking down that jizz -- saying the republicans deserve an apology.
grayson used correct forum as stated by kay @9:36.
also, this forum used in outrage of the day(s):
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/hissy-...
note to villagers & cons: grow up! or stop the faux outrage! we've been 'on to you' for some time now.
The Republicans should be thanking Grayson....
for explaining their plan so effectively....
.
Lol the outrage by Republicans is laughable. He surely was jesting them, making outrageous claims like they have been doing, just to get under they're skin. Let me get this straight: In the black hole of illogical half-thoughts and hypocrisy that is a Republicans mind, it's alright to spread unsubstantiated rumors that the Democrats plan sets up death panels to kill your grandparents, but if a Democrat does the same thing jokingly, he or she is out of line?
Hilarious...
I love it! Too bad we don't have him in Arizona where everything is run by Mormons and realtors. Not the only thing he is kicking ass on either.
after all the death panel, pull the plug on grandma BULLSHIT...they get their fuckin panties in a bunch over Grayson callin them out?
FUCK ALL YOU GOP SCUMBAGS!
Goddamn corporate whores.
I saw him questioning some other guy, about the bailouts and he was trying to make a controversy out of the guy answering his questions. It reminded me of limbaugh. I'd prefer more politicians who can communicate without charts telling me someone is plotting my death or kill my grandmother. Good for him for trying to cut through the shit but it is still irrating to be talked to like a child.
his tenacious questioning of fed lawyer. regarding audit of where bail-out money went. good on grayson. i support his pushing for audit of fed. and questions to non-responsive lawyers for the fed.
the placard drama got attention, was clear. maybe you're not his intended audience.
don't agree with your assessment. guess you won't be supporting him. pity.
more like grayson!
see also comments re law prof v. trial lawyer @ 10:50 on this page for add'l insight if interested.
and what I heard, was the man, who is the head of the regulatory agency that is in charge of keeping an eye on the FED, admitting that the FED uses companies like JP Morgan when they inject new money into the system, giving those companies prior knowledge of where the money is going, which is bound to give them inside knowledge of whose stock will go up from the infusion of cash.
I may have it wrong, but that is what I thought was brought out.
By the way, loved Grayson's $$ tie he was wearing during the grilling. I don't think he is talking down to people so much as using republican tactics against them. By the way, my dad, who is a conservative republican, is loving the videos I have been sending him of Grayson. It will be interesting to see what he thinks of this one.
i shorthanded the interview (and his recent congressional presentation) to get a quick point out ... thanks for expanded version, you do it more justice.
rec'd this email inbox later today from Alan Grayson (& i excerpt):
and, likewise, we respect him for his integrity and acting for the people not corps!! more like him!!
There have been many polls done on whether or not people favor a Public Option. Many of them say YES. Yet the very people whom We as a People have elected to look after Our interests are fighting it tooth and nail...even Democrats. It seems that our so-called 'representatives' on that 'shining hill' still aren't listening to Us. They are too concerned with all those big contributions from Big Corporations, Inc. If they don't want to listen to Us, then I guess We have to vote MORE of THEM out. Democrats and Republicans alike, until We can actually find people who really are committed to serving The People and not their their personal interests and agendas. That is what most our representatives are doing, but yet they continue to be voted into office over and over again. Usually if one is repeatedly not doing the job they were hired for, one is fired and replaced.
just called Rep. Grayson's office in DC and gave him a big "attaboy!!"
I think they were surprised at my call and were expecting another dittohead hate call
the guy's a ball-buster fer sure. Nice to see one on my side for a change. I would hope a Dem gets up every day to make the same point on every issue. Republican Emergency Response Plan - Die quickly. Republican Unemployment solution - Die quickly. Republican Retirement Plan - Die quickly. Republican Justice - Kill them quickly. Republican National Defense - Kill them all quickly. Republican taxation Plan - Give all our money to our corporate masters faster, faster.
It's not just "death panels" and it's not just healthcare. For the last 20-30 years, Republicans have turned to the catch-all fearmongering angle on every single issue.
Gay marriage? "Liberals want to fulfill the Homosexual Agenda of destroying the institution of marriage, which is the foundation of society!" Abortion? "Liberals want to create a society of death, where anything is allowed and there is no right and wrong!" Climate change? "Liberals will use this hoax to enact sweeping reforms to turn America into a socialist nightmare!" And so on and so on...
But George Snufflapagus (of ABC, big surprise) must be right: it would be disrespectful to accuse Republicans of not caring if you or I get sick, just because they claim not to care if you or I get sick...
The sad thing is that the spineless wimpy democratic leadership will probably cave in to republican demands, and censure him.
'Are there no prisons? [asked Scrooge.]
'Plenty of prisons,' said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.
'And the Union workhouses.' demanded Scrooge. 'Are they still in operation?'
'Both very busy, sir.'
'Oh. I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,' said Scrooge. 'I'm very glad to hear it.'
'Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,' returned the gentleman, 'a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?'
'Nothing!' Scrooge replied.
'You wish to be anonymous?'
'I wish to be left alone,' said Scrooge. 'Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned-they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there.'
'Many can't go there; and many would rather die.'
'If they would rather die,' said Scrooge, 'they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."
-- Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
Thank you for making it so damn clear.
That's what happened to my mother this March. She avoided going to the doctor because she had no health insurance. When she turned 65 she finally went to the emergency room, and died from emphysema three days later while still in the hospital, on oxygen. I'm sure she saved a lot of people a lot of money by dying that way.
Wish I had my mother back, though.
i am sorry. it must be very difficult for you to revisit this heartache. . . it is a national disgrace that we don't value the health of our people. but you know that.
I'm sorry...that's awful.
Absolutely shameful, that the richest nation in the world, doesn't care for it's sick.
mind. If it's too much for some republicans to handle well that's too bad. They have been nasty enough over the last few decades to show that they are proficient at dishing it out, but not so courageous that they can take in on the chin. Boo Hoo.
We need more democrats who can similarly express their version of the truth on the floor of Congress. Not to be provocative although speaking any truth to republicans will incite a venomous attack because of their insecurities and skewed world view. But to speak truth and have it on record. There are too many issues that need to be addressed to fix all the problems that have been disproportionately caused by republicans who hate america and have done everything that they can to destroy and make dysfunctional the government that they claim is the cause of all problems, that and taxes, of course. We need strong democrats who are not afraid and not timid to represent their constituents, the people, and not give preferential treatment to big business donors like republicans and weak, irresponsible democrats. The democrats who resort to playing the big money game of lobbyists and special interests over their responsibility to the people who elected them need to be fired from their jobs. It's time to clean house, republicans and democrats who sell out. Let's get rid of them. That's our job as a voting public. We need to vet those who want to be our representatives to make sure that they will represent us, the people, and not be addicted to the money game that no campaign finance reform has led to. One day, if we are lucky, we will weed out all the bad apples and get back on track with our democracy. We can make it work for us. But it will take a lot of work. It would also be nice to enact true and dramatically effective campaign finance reform to take the special interest power of money out of the equation and bring our representatives back to their original job as representatives of the people.
to tell the truth about the repugnicans./snark
Good for Grayson , is about time a Dem showed a back bone , some guts and told it like it is ! Cry me a river Repugs ! LOL
why isn't this guy on the 24 hour news networks? So simple, so precise, so clear. Thank you Alan Grayson for being a Democrat with Balls and Truth.
That video was 10 kinds of win. And from a freshman, no less.
When was the last time we saw Democratic elected officials talk like that? Pete Stark might come close occasionally, and Barney Frank can make points with great humor, but this is just so unusual for Democrats.
Iiiiiiiii Like it.
Grayson didn't personally attack anyone on the floor of the House. Howdy Doody and the Tennessee Hair Helmet probably came closer to breaking that rule.
About time a Democrat got himself publicity for speaking the truth in the most outrageous way possible. And yes, that is a compliment for Grayson.
Jonathan Capehart was just talking about the difference between Rep. Wilson's outburst and Rep. Grayson's. He said something to the tune of Grayson's remarks were about POLICY and not personal. And he doesn't owe an apology. When asked if Grayson owes anyone an apology, he said, flat out: "No."
Jonathan Capehart is a Republican I'm pretty sure....this was nice to hear.
Poor widdle repubs...getting their panties in a wad because someone dished BACK TO THEM a taste of their own medicine. Don't they have any 'adults' in Congress????
for telling the truth.
The corporate overlords can now be heard calling the dem leadership; "clean-up" on isle 2!
This guy should have Harry Reids job. I'll bet he would kick some bluedog ass into shape! I know it's the Senate, but that's where the inaction is.
We should call the Senate by its true name: The House of Lords
*stands up and applauds* THANK YOU!!!!! THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN SAYING FOR 60 YEARS!!!!! Why did it take so long for someone in Congress to say this? Too bad he's going to get a good old fashioned character assassination by the corporate fascist media...
Cue Nancy Pelosi throwing the one Democrat with real balls under the bus in 3....2.....1
– “Last week Democrats released a health care bill which essentially said to America’s seniors: Drop dead.” [Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL), 7/21/09]
– “They’re going to save money by rationing care, getting you in a long line. Places like Canada, United Kingdom, and Europe. People die when they’re in line.” [Rep. Steve King (R-IA), 7/15/09]
– “The Republican plan will] make sure we bring down the cost of health care for all Americans and that ensures affordable access for all Americans and is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government.” [Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), 7/28/09]
– “That’s exactly what’s going on in Canada and Great Britain today…and a lot of people are going to die.” [Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), 7/10/09]
– “One in five people have to die because they went to socialized medicine! … I would hate to think that among five women, one of ‘em is gonna die because we go to socialized care.” [Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), 7/15/09]

And the only acceptable form of birth-control for them is the so-called "Rhythm Method", aka "hope and prayer" or for the more earthy, "pull and pray". So the Republican health care plan is just to abstain from illness -- It's so simple. Then if you do get sick, well, it's a blessing from God to help you and your family develop deeper faith!
For years now, whenever I've been uninsured I tell my friends and family I have "Rhythm Method" insurance. On an unrelated note, I don't have any catholic friends anymore.
I think he just confirmed the angle I believed he was taking and that is, statistical.
If you've ever noticed his position regarding the banks and FED, you'll quite often notice he'll rely on statistics to prove his point(s). From a bi-partisan standpoint he is in the minority in his support for the audit the FED bill.
The blank statement, republicans want you to die left me puzzled considering a few points, while in actuality the remark seems indeed to be accurate. Is he attempting to distinguish the link between the hard right and corporatism?
Religious Coping and Life-Prolonging Care:
"Religious patients are far more likely to ask doctors to do everything possible to keep them alive, and were three times as likely to be placed on a mechanical ventilator. They were less likely to do advance care planning, such as signing “do not resuscitate” orders, preparing a living will or creating a healthcare proxy."
Jack Kevorkian, Terri Schiavo, Karen Ann Quinlan? His basic remark conflicted with the aformentioned, yet as I assumed... today he just qualified his remarks with the statistics that support his allegation as fact.
Who wants to be blamed for killing people? If any honest individual wants to ignore the fact(s) they will, be it purposely and or ignorantly. It's a challenge for individuals whom have a personal disdain for government for one reason or another, be it religious liberty, abortion, gay marriage etc, witch has been stated in the recent past.
I think Mr. Grayson keenly is attempting to connect with individual interest vs corporate interests. With the studies pointing factually to the link between religion and loving life and or being afraid of death; Mr. Grayson may be able to show some people how on this issue at least, corporations are taking advantage of their concerns regarding death, to capitalize... sounds like capitalism to me?
Go Alan!
more than holding his own against Wolfboy and the Corporats.
Rock on, Mr Grayson!
Thanks... caught some √
He said knuckle- dragging... :P
They got 4 peeps ganging up on him and he's kicking ass
without equivocating. How rare in a politician.
I'll look forward to seeing that clip on these tubes... soon!
I hate to say it,but the Republicans have been very successful in extracting hangdog apologies from Dems.I sincerely hope this guy stands firm because he has made a brilliant and forceful point.
I love this. They want Pelosi to reprimand Grayson for speaking the truth (the reps reallt have no plan) but were against a reprimand for 'You Lie?'
great point
in Orlando tomorrow. If I can get away, I'll bring a pro-Grayson sign and watch the fireworks...
Many love him for supporting Ron Paul's "Audit The Fed" bill. This not so much. :P
Finally, a Democrat with balls.
As someone watching this debate from overseas very closely ...
wow, and more wow. Finally someone in government that isn't being prostituted to keep their mouth shut.
When this battle is over and America catches up to the rest of the world ... Mr Grayson will be someone that you can look back on with pride.
.
You don't like that a democrat is not rolling over and playing political nice nice, and now you want him to apologize (which he did, and jammed it even further down your hypocrite throat, hahaha).
Where the apologies for lying to america about health care reform? death panels? or dems plan is to kill grandma? or socialism!, or pretty much every other piece of horseshit that is typical of GOP dialogue.
Dems need to take Graysons lead and run with it. No time to be nice when dealing with asshole republicans.
