Republican Dirty Tricks in NY-23
By scarce Thursday Oct 29, 2009 2:30pm
Josh Kraushaar has a cute post at Politico about the usual shenanigans that go on in congressional races where one candidate tries to pretend his opponent is more liberal or conservative than he or she really is in order to sway voters. In this case it's the rightwing Republicans attacking the Republican candidate.
At first glance, the group’s ad looks like it’s an endorsement of Scozzafava. But it’s a dirty trick engineered by Hoffman supporters, looking to render her unacceptable to many Republican voters by detailing her liberal position on gay marriage, support of President Obama’s stimulus and connections to labor."
...Common Sense in America is spending about $150,000 on the ad buy, and it is up on broadcast and cable in all three media markets in the sprawling upstate New York district....
In tracking down information about Common Sense in America, it’s clear they don’t have the best intentions for Scozzafava in mind. The group, which was founded on October 23, is headed by Arkansas businessman Jackson Stephens, a board member of the Club for Growth. The Club for Growth was one of the first groups to endorse Hoffman. Stephens donated the maximum $4,800 to Hoffman’s campaign, and is one of the Club for Growth’s leading donors.
Calling the group’s phone number – listed on the advertisement – led me to a voice mail from Stephens, which directed all questions about Common Sense in America to Dan Blum, a communications consultant who is serving as a spokesman for the organization. According to FEC records, Blum worked for the Republican National Committee as a staffer as recently as this January.
And with these Republicans now endorsing the Independent Doug Hoffman is it any wonder these type of tricks are being attempted?

future. I did everything I could to make a difference, mostly blown off as being uncool and un-hip and to serious.
Oh well I gave it my best effort.
I haven't been following NY-23.
When I hear something like this I think "Campaign Finance Reform" but the chorus of voices are still faint on that subject. I think many pols would rather wreck the country than speak to the issue.
every time I see Palin's smarmy mug I want to punch something.
Thank goodness my dog can bite back so she doesn't get any whacks.
Hannity claims that he is not a Republican. Watch it below.

He's for whoever shows him the most $$$.
There really is such a party. That is what we should be calling the teabaggers.
the right hates moderate (r)'s because they may participate in bipartisanship. they can't have that...that would be too american.
Not to mention bi-partisanship simply cannot apply in all situations and the way it is used on the hill is usually to rubberstamp legislation that sucks.
UGH!
"Choice"....Republican????
Wha??????
Ummm, BTW Dede....If you put a wig on that makes you "look" like Bachmann, then just don that "deer in the headlights" look whenever ANYONE asks you any type of "controversial" question....
You'd be a freakin' SHOE-IN!!!!!
of which pols and pundits come out for each, I guess.
In the end, the one with the wackier bunch of crazies supporting him or her is the one the 'Thugs should support.
Glad I'm not from NY-23.
I was a prof up there for 9 years, and I can tell you it's not your typical breed of conservative. Perhaps it's the 40 below temperature, the packed ice covered roads from Halloween to mid-March, the lake-effect white outs at Watertown, and the too far north to snow areas near the Canadian border near the St. Lawrence River. These are hardy, no-nonsense folks with their French surnames and Mansard roofs. The rabid foxes and skunks keep voters ready to see through ideologues and outside-funded machine politics. In a place with more cows than people and a major share of all "Vermont" maple syrup production, the North Country folks can take care of themselves. They make Sarah Palin's Alaska seem tame. Just remember that the Nightmare of Elm Street movies were based on Potsdam, NY's Elm St. where Wes Craven came from.
That up thar in that thar area he drives by about 80 deer along the road per NIGHT on his commute and hits an average of about 10 deer per every winter season!!!!!
Say WHAT????!!!!!!!
As you can see that is the elite of the Republican Party right there for all to see. Scary, isn't it?
Are these things true or not? If she didn't support Obamas stimulus then this is a dirty trick. Otherwise, it's called educating the voters. Sheesh.
the strategy. With the right wing splitting their votes the only hope for the right to take the seat is to split the progressive vote by somehow convincing people Scozzafava is a progressive. They may have overlooked the intelligence factor.
The Club for Fascism! These Toomey led lunatics crack me up. They are the craziest of the batshit insane.
I see nutjob Toomey is looking for support on this site. Toomey has about as much of a chance of winning in Pennsylvania, as the Lion's do of winning the Super Bowl next year.
This Vermonter can't wait until this race ends. 3-4 ads play back to back every commercial break on the local news. My "favorite" is the one against the Democrat, Bill Owens, who's a *menacing chord* LIBERAL TRIAL LAWYER, but Doug Hoffmann *cue happy music* is a CONSERVATIVE FINANCIAL EXPERT.
Yeah, a carpetbagger from another district who doesn't even know what's going on in the seat he's running for.
What would happen if any other political party pushed for a cap and trade bill that could create green jobs of which 9 out of 10 created would be unsustainable, require government subsidizing and cost the nations economy millions of real jobs? And this is not to mention the increase in manufacturing costs that would be passed on to us in time of depression.
No matter if you are a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or an Independent, what do you think is going to happen when the government revenues are down and spending is quadrupled? As one senator from Florida was categorized as, “One must be a fry short of a happy meal” to believe that wiping out the U.S. dollar and reducing the purchasing power of our salaries and retirement savings is a good thing.
How do you think the media or yourself would react if the republicans were the majority party and were negotiating behind closed doors on a republican senator’s proposal to overhaul one of our economy's largest industries, especially when it hasn't been written yet? On an almost straight party-line vote, Democrats in the Senate Finance Committee squashed an amendment by Senator Jim Bunning that would have required the Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reed and the Baucus healthcare or “rob our children and their children bill” to be posted on the Internet for all Americans to read for 72 hours prior to the Committee voting on it.
There are Republicans who should be voted out of office as well. They are the ones who didn’t listen to the American people and under the veil of "negotiations," kept the “rob our children and their children” bill scheme to socialize the nation's health care system alive. And those are not the only ones. Every politician who allowed the Federal Reserve to loan two trillion dollars without knowing to whom, for what or the disclosure of terms should be investigated, made accountable for their irresponsibility and thrown out of office as well. Sleeping on the job is no excuse.
The Federal Reserve has no real oversight and it’s time for these politicians to get the message loud and clear. We need to learn from our past mistakes and before voting, find out the candidate’s passed association’s, voting record, speeches made and most importantly, don’t let the progressives in the media or celebrities who receive bribes from the likes of George Soros brain wash you. The buss is speeding to go over a cliff and we need to get hold of the staring wheel and the brakes.
