Australian comedy show The Chaser's War on Everything travel to the United States to visit a couple of the more well-known torture proponents, John Yoo and Dick Cheney. Donning a familiar costume, Yoo is confronted while giving a lecture in a classroom. Yoo lectures at UC Berkley and Chapman, and was a key member of the Bush administration's justification of torture. (A complete mystery as to why Yoo isn't in jail yet, but as Richard Armitrage advised, it's probably not a good idea for Yoo to travel outside the United States.)

And in another familiar costume, our intrepid faux reporters travel to Dick Cheney's bunker compound house to get some unpaid royalties. Unfortunately Dick wasn't at home, and it wasn't long before local authorities and the Secret Service were called in to intervene.

This clip is from their July 15th show. They came to prominence with American audiences during the 2007 APEC conference.

that makes no sense at all. Times have changed more than you know.

Yup. Strange times! As in, these are strange times.

There goes the "lack of a guilty mind" defense for him.

Kind of makes me wonder if the "liberal" Berkley students of the late sixties/early seventies weren't just milking their draft deferments until they could use their MBAs to finance Reagan and Bush.

Shame.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

gump's picture

I'm hoping your wrong about the 60's/70's students but UC Berkley had a tradition. These people in this class signed up knowing Yoo would be teaching. What were they expecting to be taught? How to torture, how to lie, or both? We need Dylan to come in and sing a few for them.

Wow! This gives me an idea.

Think twice before you follow through on that idea. ;)

I know what yer sayin', but it's sad to think they have terrorized people into inaction in The Police State. That's not America!!

All the dipshit American college students are just sitting there listening to this criminal...not to mention the administration comes in to defend him!!!

But it takes two "foreigners" to confront the dirty rotten scoundrel!!!

The students aren't passive listeners either. You can almost make out some of them telling the Chasers to be quiet. I loved when the guy stood up with the hood on his head! Yoo looked uncomfortable.

Shame on UC Berkely.

Love these guys, where are the American version? Surely the Birther movement will try something like this against Obama...

JohnnyBravo's picture

I would not sign up to be in a class taught by Yoo or Rice. These kids should have, pardon the term, done their homework and chose a professor that isn't a criminal.

How can those students sit through Yoo's classes knowing he's Torture Guy?

far left loon >.<

maybe they are budding republicazi.

not only do they sit through his classes, they, like fiver and bobd mention, actually clapped at the end of his lecture. applause for yoo?

holy fuck me

Knowing me... (and I do), if I were at Berkley, I'd sign up for his class and be armed with difficult and uncomfortable questions for him day and night. Student to professor, I'd make him squirm. Oh man, would I, and I'd love it.

far left loon >.<

It gets attention, but the torturers are cold people - they just have the human rights protesters removed and then they continue on.

carried out at Chapman, not Berkeley. I think Yoo's "on leave" from Boalt Hall, and is plying his bloody goods at Chapman because even Clinton prosecutor Kenneth Starr doesn't want him sullying the air at Pepperdine...

Excellent! I don't see anything wrong with their approach. It's just "enhanced inerrogation" trying to get the truth out of these criminals.

Sometimes you just got to shake your head and ask yourself WTF am I doing here?

Thank god some one is making that bastard squirm. Why isn't he in prison? Why is he working at one of the most liberal colleges in the US? How in the f**k does he have students? Who would take that f**king class? Future scandal ridden neo-cons I'm sure.

Not only is Yoo not in jail, he's not been disbarred and currently is paid by a university to teach law.

There's no justice. There's no accountability. Don't have any illusions that there will ever be any. A few "bad apples", the rank-and-file soldiers, were sent up the river to take the fall while the people that gave the orders live in luxury.

I can't tell you how proud I am to be an American at this moment. [/sarcasm]

It is sad that it takes a couple of Aussies to get in this monster's face. Of course, they have a government that would actually try to come and get them if they were disappeared.

Shame, shame, shame on the students who applauded. My god...

calgarylady's picture

That was very disturbing to see.

It's sad when comedians are the only ones telling the truth. Kudos to The Chasers, Jon S, Stephen C, Dave L and Bill M for doing what they do. I also have to include those two DJs from Montreal who punked Palin so deliciously.

We need more like you! Thank gawd we have you!

When liars, thugs and criminals are handed the truth, they either run away (Yoo) or get their henchmen to do their dirty work (Cheney).

What happened to our system of checks and balances, the Congress and Judiciary?
Corrupted?

What happened to the press/media?
Corrupted?

This country is currently in a sorry state.
People need to wake up and stop getting steamrolled by the propaganda before it's too late.

The power has shifted away from the voters and the middle class/average American worker has especially taken a beating and is losing ground.

Do they have a history of hiring cretins and war criminals? I always believed that Universities were institutes of higher learning and for exploring ways to improve the human condition.
UC Berkley has hired a cretin who believes that the constitution and human rights and freedoms are optional.
