Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faces a critical challenge to his leadership from his moderate rival Mir Hossein Mousavi. The relaxation of standards leading up to today's election has given rise to a movement which just may topple the repressive regime of Ahmadinejad. At least that's what the Greens (Sabz) hope will happen. Among the more startling aspects to this election has been the prominent role of Mousavi's wife, Zahra Rahnavard, an Iranian artist and political scientist who served as the chancellor of Alzahra University in Tehran. The role of younger Iranians, especially women, and harnessing the power of new technologies have also been crucial factors in Mousavi's rise, just as it was with Barack Obama.

Ian Black of The Guardian reports on the tremendous excitement in Tehran.

were not able to "start" a revolution over there by now.

Must be tough territory to penetrate.

miss_kitty's picture

check out 1953. we fucked them up good. You might say we made them the country they are today.

THE MOSSADEGH PROJECT

It's only tough because they know us by our actions.

Evet's picture

. . . . soon reached an agreement with foreign oil companies to form a consortium and "restore the flow of Iranian oil to world markets in substantial quantities", giving the U.S. and Great Britain the lion's share of Iran's oil.

It's all about OIL

roooth's picture

the fact that so many countries are still willing to like America and want to be like Americans and are able to seperate America from the bastards who get into power positions in our government and then start so much trouble in our name.

Edwin's picture

Actually that's true. Most countries LIKE YOU FOR YOUR FREEDOMS, not the contrary right-wing talking point otherwise. That's ironic, eh?

It's always hawks, in every country, that hijack the mainstream. They use fear to keep people wanting hawks around. We must end this destructive cycle of domestic violence.

Obama was supposed to replace the repressive regime of Dubya, not continue it. I wonder when the replacing is going to start. ???

Evet's picture

during Heir Bushes Regime.

Now we got rich people telling us we should do " community service" after the biggest rip off of the people in U.S. History.

roooth's picture

the "rich" people calling on us to do community service are not the rich people who ripped us off. The Obamas started off poorer than many, many Americans and are now rich because they educated themselves and worked very hard. They earned it. And they have always done community service along they way.

In other words, they aren't asking us to do anything they haven't been doing for decades; get yourself and your kids educated, earn your own way, give back to your community.

LOL

you obviously have zero street smarts nothing personal.

Keep your heads on your shoulders and don't go all gaga, no matter who wins the election the Islamic Supreme Council will still run the country as it has for the last 30 years.

Not that that's a horribly bad thing, they aren't all that nutty no matter what the right wing loonies try to claim. As totalitarian theocracies go they are pretty moderate.

Blue Lensman's picture

At least Iran appears to be moving FORWARD

Evet's picture

or illusion?

One thing the Elites are excellent at is illusion.

Blue Lensman's picture

was that USA is CLEARLY going backwards.

Beautiful... show me an ugly one before I move over there

Evet's picture

sexy, and cover girl like models.

Waiting for a sexy American hunk like you to sweep them up in your arms.

LOL

I'm too old to do them any good but one of them would do me a world of good

Evet's picture

but I haven't lost my ability to sweet talk.

Most of my lady friends throughout life used to say . . "keep talking like that and you will "get places".

Sierra Matt's picture

Are we all sexist pigs? Obviously I am, because one of my first thoughts was, "Hey... there are some serious babes in Iran!"

Evet's picture

LOL oh man.

Edwin's picture

Is it sexist to comment on their beauty if you are gay? (Although I did say some of the men are hot.)

far left loon >.<

Old Billy's picture

"What's wrong with sexy?"

Sierra Matt's picture

Nothing at all. I guess I felt a little guilty when the story's about the exciting possibility of Iran going more progressive, the first thing I do is ogle the women.

("So you are excited the 'green' party in your country is rising in power? You're causing somethin' else to rise, too....heh heh heh....")

See - there I go again.

Edwin's picture

Yes, I noticed they are very attractive, so are some of the men (oh happy day).

far left loon >.<

-Bricked-'s picture

Every single damn one of them was smoking hot.

Edwin's picture

Actually, Iran looks like a beautful country and has a rich and ancient culture. I'd be interested in going there one day!! (I just might, knowing me.)

akmedsuckacod doesn't remind me of someone that will go down without a fight. I just hope the religious fuctards are tired of him.

Isn't as unpopular as the western "democratic" nations pretend. The election is probably closer to realism than what we here in North America get. Perhaps Obama with give em a couple good ol' teleprompter "we are the world" speeches and that'll bring about change and hope to them too. Or perhaps just overthrow the government voted in like before and pretend it's all the Rapepublicans fault as per usual.

southernman748's picture

said Iranian Ministry said Akmen whatever has a lead of 67% to 30%. That sounds like the fix is in. By the way Canuck Eishenhower was Pres when we overthrew Iran Gov in 50's. Eishenhower was a good man but a Republican nonethe less.

somehow--with the way that Mousavi called victory so blatantly prematurely leads me to think that he is using American tactics in his attempt to distort the reports early on. What a clown. (I am already sick of looking at his ridiculous face. He reminds me of the Italian detective in the movie Hannibal, where Dr. L kindly asks him if he wants to be hanged with his bowels in or his bowels out.) I will say, however, that a Mousavi victory would most likely save Iran a lot of criminal violence and illegal mayhem from the likes of the US and Israel.

wagonjak4's picture

Haven't heard much about what might happen if the election is very close, and it looks like if the state sanctioned Achmadinejad appears to steal the election, the coming week could be more interesting then a Mousavi win...

Will those hundreds of thousands of young people and women who gathered for the green rallies for the Mousavi, go quietly into the night without protest and explosive anger?

I think not-hand onto your hats kids, the coming days should be facinating...but a spat between Letterman and Palin is getting all the air time on cable news TV today.

of the average American. Sometimes, it is as if the rest of the world... simply does not exist.

To see the percentage of coverage devoted to something as silly as the Palin/Letterman nonsense... vs. the coverage of actually important stuff (much of which happens outside our borders). When I see that, I feel utterly embarrassed.

getalife's picture

This election and debate humanized the Iranian people for the world to see. They want the same basic change as us.

Impossible to bomb them now and the filthy warmongering neocons lose again.

southernman748's picture

neo-cons aren't filthy, they just have a natural stink to them

wagonjak4's picture

I do think Mousavi called his victory prematurely, and I know his vote tallies are much higher in the major cities of Iran then the more conservative areas which come in later...but the state TV station, run by "Achy" is trumpeting a victory for their master Achmadinejad before the results are in at all.

Your post is angry and delusional, and I'm begging you to cut back on whatever drugs you're overusing from mom and dad's medicine cabinet!

And don't watch any more of those Hannibal movies...I saw one and it gave me nightmares.

Peace and love!

MountainMan23's picture

Surprising part of the Guardian vid was that the "morality police" were pulled back to allow the amazing crowds their freedom during the week before the elections.

And that's one of Mousavi's pledges - to end the morality police.

I'm thrilled to see the young Iranians enthusiastic about taking charge of their country. Only good can come from that.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

Looks like the GOP may need another boogy man. Not to worry, if they can't find a legit one they'll create one.

Whoa! Those are some smokin' hot women. Who needs 72 virgins, when you have women that freaking gorgeous walking around?

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

May have a point that those destine to murder, cant get the women of their dream on earth, but more incline to get them in the promise land instead.

Sam's picture

I suspect that there will be a revision before the official vote totals are released--I think there will be a runoff before the mullahs steal the election. They have the proverbial tiger by a tail--these are the same people that overthrew the Shah--and their children have a much younger average age compared to most countries. It is the young who made the revolution in 1979, and the young who will make the next revolution there. I look for thousands in the streets--Mousavi has the support of some of the creators of the 1979 revolution, like Rafsanjani--they know how to make one.

Symes's picture

Ahmadinejad has won the election by a large margin.
He is mighty popular you know, any western reports to the contrary have as usual been wishful thinking, more along the lines of psyops directed at Europe and China than anything else.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but the election was at least as fair and untainted as any you've had in the US for a decade or so.

And please don't start with the "they didn't allow international monitoring of the election", neither did the US.

Now we can watch and see if Obama is a crazy stupid as Bush was or if he'll actually start being a diplomat.

shutterbug98's picture

...lessons in election fraud from our shamfests in 2000 & 2004. If you're going to steal an election, you don't do it big, you make it a SQUEAKER. "We're SO sorry!!! You were just THAT close."
