Blagojevich: Irony Alert

From a Chicago Tribune poll (10/22/08). Blagojevich was polling lower than George Bush (18%) and former Republican Gov. George Ryan, now said to be seeking a pardon from Bush. Blagojevich succeeded Ryan as governor in 2003.

Only 8 percent of the state's voters believe Blagojevich has lived up to his promise to end corruption in government—the hallmark of his initial election as governor in 2002 after the tenure of scandal-tarred Republican Gov. George Ryan. Three out of four Illinois voters said Blagojevich failed to keep his promise to end corruption in state hiring, contracts and appointments to state boards and commissions.

The poll found voter disapproval of Blagojevich to be even deeper than what Ryan faced during his final weeks in office as investigations swirled around him. In October 2002, a Tribune poll found 23 percent of voters approved of the job Ryan was doing as governor, while 61 percent disapproved. Ryan was convicted on federal corruption charges and is in prison.

A 13% approval rate is not so good.

Overall, the survey of 500 registered likely voters conducted at the end of last week showed a mere 10 percent said they wanted Blagojevich re-elected in 2010, while three-fourths said they didn't want him back for a third term.

The survey also showed only 13 percent approved of Blagojevich's job performance, while 71 percent disapproved.

Add to the fact that Blagojevich is a former prosecutor himself for Cook County, and that today is his birthday (born December 10, 1956) and this is reduced to utter and complete farce.

He's kind of the poopie in the punch bowl. He's just stinkin' up everything.

I bet he never expected to spend his Happy Birthday like this.

stupid, sick or we've yet to hear all of it. I'm leaning toward sick.

He's so stupid, he'll probably volunteer to prosecute himself.

What he's got there is golden, doncha know?

ALBANY, N.Y. - A former New York judge who flew to Florida in 2000 to help battle for George W. Bush during the presidential election recount has been charged with attempted bribery and extortion, accused of pressuring a lawyer to give him $10,000.

I wonder how much attention this will get?

Probably about as much as you have given it here.

Jesse Jackson Jr. just made a statement about all this and he seems pissed as hell at what Blogo was doing. If I were him I would be insulted and it sounded like he was.

Probably about as much as you have given it here.

That much?? Oh, you and your chirpy optimism.

Could you hear me chirping from where you are? :)

Jackson Jr. was Blagojevich's top choice....the truth is coming out and it won't be pretty....for Jackson Jr. either.

I am so sorry to hear that because Jesse Jackson Jr seemed so sincere. He said his meeting with Blogo this week was the first time in four years he had met with him. The only thing that bothered me about what Jackson said, was that he had hired a lawyer. I tried to justify it in my mind that anyone would do the same thing if they were in his shoes right now.

Whether he was involved or not, I don't think we're going to see JJJr. going to congress, anytime in the near future.

I feel badly for Jackson but I, too, think that this is not going to wash out well for him. I don't think he had a half a mil, or if he has the ability to raise it for Blago, but I think this bodes poorly.

I guess we have are idiots too. 8% approve of his war on corruption. DUH!

I think a updated poll may indicate that the correct figure now is not 8%---it is zero.

But I could be wrong.

If

If they run another poll, I would bet that there would be some percent would would be perfectly okie dokie with it.

Jesse Jackson Jr. is on the tube right now calling for G-Rod's resignation and denying any involvement.

I truely believe that Blogojevich was about to name himself as Obama's replacement, since Barack wouldn't "play ball". Why else would he pay a visit to the sit-in workers in that shut down factory in Chicago. Seems out of character for him.

Thankfully he was caught before that could happen.

When he made that visit and then called for the state to no longer do business with that bank, Fitzgerald probably thought they had better pounce before, like you said, he named himself to the senate seat.

Better now than latter.

We definately don't need a Democratic version of Ted Stevens. We've had quite enough of those in the past.

I'm concerned that I've become way too acclimated to these low approval numbers...anything above 30 is going to seem stellar now.

If this guy had been a republican, we would all be saying the same things about him that we are now. I wonder what the right would be saying in that case.

That damned liberal Fitz guy is out to get them, OUT. TO. GET. THEM! And all the wingnut blogs would be echoing the same thing.

I normally vote straight Democratic, but I passed on this mini-Bush POS Blogojevich twice. Obama's right...many of us feel shitty about this here in Illinois.

I hear ya, I lived in Peoria for 20 years. Political scandals are about as common as cornfields there.

I am from Peoria and have lived here all my life, most of the corruption ended here decades ago after the repeal of Prohibition. The real scandals were in Chicago and Springfield with such wonderful people as Dan Walker, Paul Powell, George Ryan, and Otto Kerner. All went to jail except Powell, after his death they found $800,000.00 in hidden in shoeboxes in his home, which remains a legend to this day.

Because of that, we downstaters learned to view Chicago politics very skeptically and as a model to be avoided.

Don't forget Dan Rostinkowski.

As a side note, I didn't mean Peoria in general just Illinois as a whole.

I assumed that's what you were referring to, and also agree with your post below that rooting out corruption transcends political affiliation. And thanks for the .02 about Rostenkowski, he needs to be in the idiot pantheon too.

Embarrassed. Shamed. Disgusted.

I grew up in the city and live about 40 miles north now. I am working in Delaware this week and, funny, they thought Philly politics was some of the most corrupt around.

Swell...we get to overshadow Phila, Detroit, etc., etc., etc.

I predict the republicans, especially the elected ones, are going to milk this thing for everything it's worth. Even when all the crooks are rounded up and sent to trial, they will continue to suggest there is more to it than has been said. They so want to nail the word "corrupt" to all things Democratic now that they are drooling at the mouth. I personally would like to kick Blogo's ass for what he has done to my party.

no doubt that will happen.

the msm has already used the chamblis 'victory' and the cao victory in LA to try to draw conclusions about obama's waning influence.

if the msm would spend time actually trying to educate and inform people they wouldn't have so much time to play with their privates~

oh, but silly me, the last thing the corportacracy needs is an informed electorate....

Whats good for the goose.....You know the rest.

The Republicans generally hide their heads in the sand when one of their own goes corrupt. We're at least calling Blogo out for what he is, a corrupt democrat. No room for this kind of behavior. Corruption should rooted out no matter where in lay.

Who are these 8 percent who say he's kept his promise to end corruption? And how well does he pay them?

Maybe they are family members

The Tribune reports his wife is in deep. But no charges.

The Illinois legislature has had a full day to work on this. There's no excuse not to have impeached this bastard by now. What's the matter with these people? Are they a bunch of Pelosis or what?

There has been much talk but no definitive action---except from our AG Lisa Madigan, who had publically declared that she will go in front of the Supreme Ct. of IL to invoke a little known and unused constitutional clause seeking to remove Blago by declaring him unfit to serve if the Legislature does not act decisively soon.

What's up with that? How can a 52 year old guy have so much dark hair? On his forehead yet...

I used to live in Chicago and actually voted for the guy, but I never have liked him. Something about him is just not right, and I've always felt that way. When you watch him talk, one might think he is a Republican.

He's cheesy and creepy.

Impeach the bastard if he doesn't resign himself.

odd though that he got hit the day after he told Bank Of America to suck it, no state business.

then there is Spitzer in NY who was hit just as he was about to go after the Banks.

All these pols have shit like this on them, its how they are kept in line.

tell me how this guy got elected in the first place? I would think his arrogant, corrupt nature had to be evident at some level in 2002?

Was it a close race? Was he up against a strong Republican challenger?

Honestly, this makes voters in Illinois look almost as bad as those in Connecticut!

man

I love those no opinion people. good lord.
