Republicans are going to be embarrassed at the way they've opposed a mosque -- known as Cordoba House or Park51 -- that's planned near Ground Zero, according to one conservative host.

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough told Republicans Monday that they should "speak out against Newt Gingrich and the voices of hate." While he was at it, Scarborough threatened to leave the GOP for a party "that actually believes in small government."

Last week, Gingrich compared supporters of the mosque to Nazis. Appearing on Fox & Friends, Gingrich said, "Nazis don't have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust museum in Washington."

Prior to that, Gingrich argued that the mosque shouldn't be built near Ground Zero until churches and synagogues are allowed in Saudi Arabia.

"This is demagoguery of the first order," Scarborough said Monday. "And people in the Republican Party need to separate themselves from these voices."

"And I talk to you, my Republican brethren," he said into the camera. "I don't know how much longer you'll be my brethren. I'll be honest. I'm looking for a conservative party that actually believes in small government and not engaging in Wilsonian wars but that's another discussion."

"I'm just talking, you know, as a friend," Scarborough continued. "I promise you this. You're going to be embarrassed. You're going to look back two, three, four years from now and this is going to be dark blot on your record if you don't speak out against New Gingrich and the voices of hate."

"This is an embarrassment and you need to speak out against it," he said.

Opponents of the mosque protested in lower Manhattan Sunday. Daisy Khan, the wife of the controversial imam backing the Islamic center, said Sunday that opposition was "like a metastasized anti-Semitism."

MSNBC's Willie Geist told Scarborough Monday that the opposition is proof that anti-Muslim sentiment is worse now than after Sept. 11, 2001.

"It shows us that we are probably farther backward that we were maybe even nine years ago in our interfaith relations," said Geist.

If anyone hasn't yet seen this video from Blumenthal, it is well worth watching. This video more than demonstrates what we're up against in this country.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjMRgT5o-Ig

There is a debate within Christianity itself, and has been for quite some time, as to whether the "Revelation of John of Patmos" is Futurist, Historicist, or Preterist. I won't bother you with the details of it, save to say that that the vast majority of the right-wing evangelicals in the USA are of the Futurist bent. It has a tendency to bring about cataclysm/Deluge in the world when left unopposed -- a rather sad commentary on Christian eschatology.

These fundamentalists are being told that the Muslims are the Antichrist, and if you watch the video you'll see how these fundamentalists are just full of joy at the concept of the final 'cleansing'.

"In the Institutes, Rushdoony supported the reinstatement of the Mosaic law's penal sanctions. Under such a system, the list of civil crimes which carried a death sentence would include homosexuality, adultery, incest, lying about one's virginity, bestiality, witchcraft, idolatry or apostasy, public blasphemy, false prophesying, kidnapping, rape, and bearing false witness in a capital case."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rousas_John_Rush...

The Christian Reconstruction movement is some pretty scary stuff. Even scarier if you find yourself facing Rushdoony's list of those to be cleansed...

But

From what I learned when going to sunday school as a child, we are all Gods children. Each and every one of us. Preemptive war would be sinful. Torture would be abhorrent even in war and it would be immoral to worship the rich and demean the poor. I don't remember Jesus thinking Capitalism as most holy.

I no longer claim any particular faith but their version of Christianity sounds nothing like the one I learned.

Here's a more lengthy discussion about the Domionism/Christian Reconstruction movement:

This is the "moderate" Scarborough.

He has to play this part periodically, 'cause he's on the "progressive" network.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

my thought was similar. The ratings weren't coming with the crazy so it's time to find fresher pastures. Stand out from the crowd.

Regardless, Kudos are in order for once. I think any understanding of history will tell you how this is going to look in the future. More of this please. But I won't hold my breath.

He's just showboating.

David Ehrenstein's picture

He can see where this is heading. The party is going to have REAL blood on its hands, rather than the metaphorical kind as per usual.

Look at the way Mika is looking at him. A combination of "Wow, what a guy! and Wow, this idiot is committing political suicide right in front of me!"

"going to"?!

They're way past that.

that would be a sad truth you said there my friend.

pissed off patricia's picture

I think the idea is that republicans and some democrates are acting so freakin' bizarre over this Mosque that even other right wingers are calling them out. I don't think anyone has suggested making Scarborough a saint or anything.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

No. But it's amazing how literally everyone in here calls Scarborough a useless asshat, and then want to fawn over him when he makes a statement like this.

Joe's a shill. Nothing more.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

pissed off patricia's picture

No, the idea is that even a shill like Joe sees this as much ado about nothing and he wants his party to stop acting like total idiots about it. He is fearful his party will become the freakin' tea party that he knows is not a good thing. He is calling out his own to try to save his party. No one is saying that he's special, but more like desperate.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Then we disagree. Joe went down this road, 'cause it allows him to make the GOP look as if it can take criticism, while still using the "dog whistle" of false equivalency for the right of center types who use..."well the left does it too" as an exucse for their behavior.

It's typical GOP bullshit. Nothing more.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

I think when he says something right he should get credit for it. To always oppose even when there is agreement sounds so.....republican.
I would agree you likely won't need many credits in reserve.

Joe IS an asshat, and a shill.

What should be taken from this whole fake mosque charade is that the Right has moved so far to the right that even the shills are getting cold feet. When you start getting people like Scarborough distancing themselves from the GOP leadership because their anger and hatred to too far out there, they're really, really too far out there...

That's it exactly. The "Mosque" has become a tipping point for the GOP.

Myra Flection's picture

I don't appreciate the continued false equivalency...
"There's just as much demagogery on the left."

Really ?!!!I'm not seeing it. Are you ?

You didn't expect him to place blame SOLELY on his party did you.

Everytime some Republican comes out to denounce their own party, they ALWAYS include a statement of false equivalency about the left.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

pissed off patricia's picture

Joe always adds something like that when he talks about the crazies on the right. He always adds that there are those on the left who are just as bad. It's his idea of "fair and balanced". And Mika always agrees.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

But...but...but....he was RIGHT!!

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

I get tired of that too. It almost seems like it is some kind of demented courtesy or something. Kind of like when someone says how are you you say fine.

This was discussed on Mark Thompson's show on Sirius last week. So the Fox viewers that are so adamant againist Park51 are basically paying for it to be built! It just exposes that this is yet another foam at the mouth/fake outrage/manufactured scandal from the right wing. How convienent that you didn't hear a peep about this project when the plans first came out months and months ago, now all of a sudden close to election time, the outrage begins?

pissed off patricia's picture

It's nothing more than a man made wedge issue since fighting against gay marriage doesn't carry the weight it used to. They have tied this to 9-11 and they are hoping it floats their boats through mid-term elections and beyond.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Also, mistake me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Imam that's heading this project serve as an advisor to the FBI and the Bush Administration at one point? So if he is such a radical, extremist like they are trying to paint him then why was he working so closely with our federal government?

I hear a lot of condemnation of "big government." Where is your condemnation of big business? Should not small businesses be preferred? That puts money and decision-making into the hands of those who purportedly own them. Right? Only Real Americans know what's best for America, right? Where is your clamor to defund these multi-national monstrosities?

I'll pay attention to your Big Gummint screeds after you have done the following:

1) Renounced Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans benefits for you and all in your family. You know how to disburse your money better, right? Okay, prove it.

2) Renounced the recent (fine, 30+ years-worth) of right-wing anti-intellectualism and opposition to science.

3) Affirmed that America is, has been, and always must be, a Secular state.

After that, we can talk. Not agree much; but at least have a real conversation, like our country did B.G. (Before Goldwater).

Sincerely,

Someone who can see through you

Goldwater would roll over in his grave if he could become aware of what the "conservative movement" has become.

On the Daily Show, Jon Stewart asked John Dean whether he still considered himself a "Goldwater Conservative." Dean's response was along the lines of, "Yes, and I think that puts me left of center today."

Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?

Roberto Sumatra-Bosch - The Falcon of the Laurentians's picture

Goldwater could put together a coherent philosophy and disagree rationally. Who can say that about the 'naplappers or the GOP today? They just howl like rabid baboons and point at Obama, barking psychopathic world salads about treason and illegitimacy.

New_Damage's picture

Barry was indeed by no means a frothing neocon. He is, however, the grandfather of the Bush/Cheney unholy spawn.

My point is that the last vestiges of GOP liberalism (in the classic sense) left with Nelson Rockefeller's defeat. I suppose a better way of putting it would be "A.G. (After Goldwater)."

Cheers.

'Tis a strange feeling. To agree with Joe Scarborough and not Howard Dean, that is. So it goes sometimes, I guess.

Joe almost had me altogether, except for his silly interjection about how this prejudice would not have reared its ugly head under Obama's illiterate predecessor. Please.

I would like even to think that the former resident of the White House could come out and make some silly speech about how we're not at war with Islam today, and that the whack jobs on the right would listen to him. But it ain't so, Joe. If George W. Bush were to come out to a Tea Party, and tell everyone not to oppose the Ground Zero Mosque cultural center within the vicinity of the as-yet-unrepaired World Trade Center zone, the bigots would just as easily throw their once-beloved village idiot under that proverbial bus faster than you could blink.

And that's just it, Joe. This isn't just a problem for the Republican Party or a sad episode on which we'll look back with red faces. It is a symptom of something very sinister going on in America. The kind of divisiveness, demagoguery and outright insanity peddled by the likes of Gingrich and FUX News are just the kind of propaganda that leads to atrocities in economically troubled times.

Just wait until all those Arizonans so eager to build a wall over which to deport all those brown people they blame for their woes realize they haven't kept anyone out. They've only locked themselves in.

Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
