Fox Allows Magic Negro Text Message to Be Broadcast on New Years Eve

Throughout last night’s New Year’s eve broadcast, Fox News Channel allowed viewers to send in New Year’s greetings and wishes via text message. The messages were then scrolled across the bottom of the screen, replacing Fox’s normal crawling news headlines. While most messages were cordial, Fox allowed at least one racist message directed toward President-elect Obama to be broadcast. The message referenced Rush Limbaugh’s “Barack the Magic Negro” song.
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C.
So true to form Fox has managed to stay classy even on New Years Eve. Bravo Fox News.

Krugman points out how the racist strategy of the Repubs has taken the party down. Fox, like many repubs, is blind to the reality and is following the same path to their own demise.
Just this morning the crew on Fox and Friends were talking about how awful some of the things the girl co-host (entertainer, can't remember her name) on CNN had said on CNN's New Years Eve show. The girl evidently told a heckler something that had to be cut for the west coast showing.
As for Fox letting that message on the screen, nothing surprises me any longer. They are nothing more than a republican infomercial station.
You can't say "dick" on the air. You can't show a breast on television, or drop an f-bomb, without an FCC fine. We've had the breastfeeding photos on facebook controversy that, on some news networks, has overshadowed the airstrikes on Gaza....
Yet this shit gets a pass. I'm surprised most of this country hasn't died from stupidity yet.
Maybe one day this country will kill itself with teh stupid...

That is Kathy Griffin. I saw that this morning also. I think it came right after Gretchen ("potentially", "alledgedly") Carlson finished up her rant about the atheists wanting God out of the swearing in ceremony. She yelled "In 20 years there will be no religion in this country". I find it odd that a so called "News" outlet has stories about other News outlets. Anderson Cooper talked about what happened last night on his show. I doubt he would do a report about the text message on Fox.
They're trying to nail the label to Obama.
It's like they tried to nail Bubba on Clinton.

My understanding is that early on in the BushCo fiasco Cheney and gang got FOX Noise all kinds of tax breaks.
Obama should rescind those cuts and raise their taxes, especially on Sean Insanity so I can hear him bawl like a 3 year old girl.
...I'm certainly not one to defend Fox Newz, but these "Live Texting to video" services only parse for profanity, and the text appears to have snuck through only once. I doubt this one idiot was the only one to say it out of all their viewers (we didn't see it dozens of times), so I'd suspect they added "negro" to the blocked words list after that.
This says more about Fox viewers than it does about Fox.
An automatic screen for profanity does not absolve the broadcaster of their responsibility. And if no one at the NETWORK (as opposed to some nth market station) had the brains to anticipate 'magic negro' as a potential issue, it says plenty about FOX.
I'm sure they had things like 'assassinate' and 'kill' on the list, and those aren't exactly profanity.
I won't go so far as to say it went through because someone thought it was funny, but if your automatic screen didn't do its job, and you had to have someone update the filters, you might as well have had someone screening the messages in the first place.
(FYI, I started my career typing Chyrons for newscasts, and it wasn't just being fast that was important - it was being able to spell and exercise judgment.)

I think this kind of stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. If somebody actually tries to implement any kind of drastic changes, I think everyone will wish this kind of thing is all that happened to make history. Don't believe in all kinds of conspiracies, but I also don't think at this point in time, the "powers that be" would allow very much change or a power shift back to the people. Just can't see it.

The biggest protest in modern history occured just before the Bushinator invaded Iraq. Millions, not just on American soil, but around the globe protested. Did it do anything? Nope. Nada. Nothing. Governments have gotten so "entitled" that even municipal governments now do what they want, when they want and give the taxpayer the middle finger. Know what's done abouthat? Nothing. They come up for re-election and very few even find the ambition to vote.
I would love to see changes. I'd love to see my tax dollars used properly for what a majority wants. But that isn't how it works. Hasn't in decades. They get voted in, then do what their rich buddies want them to do, and the population tries to change it, but get the finger again.

That said no way, no how should this magic negro story be played over and over on all the stations unless it is to condemn it outright and that's it. Went for the morning news swim and didn’t find a news story about the sub Shara continent of Africa, South America, Europe, Asia (except the nightclub fire) or the semi continents of Australia, the Pacific Rim countries, and the Mediterranean (except the Gaza war). This was looking for headlines on ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN. But if I go to BBC World News guess what I found; the whole friken world, with just a story or two about the USA.
A little blip on the Fox News channel isn't that big a deal when the rest of the world is sort of under some strain. But have fun with Fox bashing, everyone needs a hobby.
I would like to remind you that Oceania (i.e. Australia) is a full blown continent, not a "semi continent."

This year my New Year's Resolution was to make less sense than usual.
The funny thing was Peter Paul and Mary's Puff the Magick Dragon was controversial with CONSERVATIVES, when it first came out. Citing the names Puff's and Little Johnny Paper they tried to claim it had subliminal messages endorsing pot smoking.
In response, either Peter or Paul, I can't remember which sang the National Anthem correctly, but with running commentary, like it had subliminal messages endorsing cocaine use.

This Barak the Magic Negro line isn't about free speech (if by free speech you mean the right to express your opinion). It's about infecting acceptable discourse with symbolic vocabulary memes. In this instance it might be considered beneficial to the racist base of the Republican Party were it to resurrect an archaic racial term with pejorative connotations and use it in reference to the President of the United States.
