Chris Shays gets off the Straight Talk Express

Virtually certain now of McCain's imminent defeat Chris Shays effectively tosses McCain under the bus. In an interview with the Yale Daily News:

NEW CANAAN, Conn. - The first ballot has yet to be tallied, but some Republicans are already hammering nails into the McCain-Palin campaign's coffin.

Locked in a tight congressional race, Rep. Chris Shays of Connecticut's 4th district is the latest in a slew of Republican incumbents, including Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, to concede a near-certain victory to the Obama camp.

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Shays said in an interview here on Sunday.

Shays, the Connecticut co-chair of McCain's campaign, said he was disappointed by the standards of McCain's race, which has increasingly relied on mudslinging.

"He has lost his brand as a maverick; he did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign," Shays said.

And for AP :

"He's taken the thing that is most valuable, his (maverick) brand, and he's not staying true to it," Shays said. "I admire John McCain more than you can imagine. He would make a great president."

But, Shays added, "I don't see how he wins if he isn't true to who he is ... a straight shooter talking about the issues."

I suppose this would be surprising coming from the co-chair McCain's Connecticut campaign if it were anyone else but Chris Shays. But right now survival is the name of the game and it's every man for himself.

Connecticut Republicans tried to put on a brave face, at least in public.

Connecticut Republican Party chairman Chris Healy said he didn't think Shays' comments were damaging to McCain's campaign.

"Chris Shays is a loyal Republican, a great asset to the party," Healy said. "Chris Shays always speaks his mind, and that's why people like him. I think part of it is frustration with our message not getting out.

"But like a lot of things about Chris Shays," Healy added, "he says
things that give people something to reflect."

Behind the scenes things were clearly different.

Connecticut conservatives are furious and many are swearing off support for Shays. "I know he always votes the right way when we really need him," said a Republican elected official in Fairfield County, who asked to remain anonymous, "but this is the last straw. He's just so treacherous and hypocritical. We all know McCain is going to lose but does that mean you kick him in the teeth on his way down. Christopher Shays owes Republicans an apology."

McCain doesn't look well.

Ever notice he never touches his wife or daughter? Never looks at them, just uses them for props on the stage to try to show he is a regular guy.

He's NOT, he's a Hateful Prick

What gets me is that he has used and abused women all of his life. He hides behind them and curses them at the same time.

McCain and Palin are a match made in heaven when it comes to manipulating people. For them to use their families in such a way is truly sickening.

He is still a privileged child.

You got that right.

... say 6 months ago!

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Shays said

I agree, he's doing horribly just as I predicted months ago. He's fought the nastiest, dirtiest campaign I have ever seen anyone fight for anything. He deserves to lose.

NEVER under estimate these people. They are a nasty, nasty version of ruthless.

McCain is burying himself by going dirty. Polls show going negative hurt him. Deep down he is a dirty old man on several levels, he can't hide it anymore.

Shays is still a despicable weasel, I can only think of the time he berated the widows of those Blackwater mercenaries who were dragged through the streets of Falluja:

I got halfway thru that video and my Gaydar went off like a four alarm fire bell.

That thought took me here: http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/showDiary.do?diar...

And now I'm convinced this man, Shays, suffers from personal conflict about who he is. And, thus, has issues with anyone else, as he does with McCain, with who they really are. As I commented previously, however, no one has ever really known the real John McCain until now. He has run out of time in his years and has let the maverick facade down to show us the true picture of his character. McCain has been deceiving the world his entire life, until now.

As far as Shays? He needs to retire and get into therapy while there's still time.

I'll trun on my gaydar, watch the video, ans let you know what I think.

I agree with you about McCain's character: it finally shines though. It's all about him ...and always has been.

I'd say he always dreamt of being on the stage, not in politics. He's certainly a drama queen.

Well, well, well. Another Repug finally sees the light? Give me a break. I guess Reagan's motto of, "Thou shall not speak against any Republican." has been tossed out the window!

It's teeming with the rats jumping from this disaster.

Meant to post this here not below.

Ah, but Mr. Shays, he IS staying true to who he REALLY is. Surprise!

...on his aging swollen prostate which forces him to dribble after he shoots, meanwhile Obama is taking it to the hoop!

Shays is just another rat deserting the proverbial sinking ship that is the McCain campaign and the Bush regime so he can win re-election in CT by fooling voters into thinking he's a moderate.

went all Edsel long, long ago.

(For you young whipper snappers, Google it. I only know about it 'cause my mom owned one and it was the source of much amusement in our house.)

owned one too. They're still so proud of it.

LOL! I don't think pride would be one of the words my parents would have used to describe that particular lemon in their lives.

It went down in history as the worst vehicle ever produced. Not many can stake a claim to that. Oh wait. We can stake a claim to having the worst president ever. So, no, "proud" is not the correct word, but it gives us all something to talk about.

They've been pissing in it for 8 years.

I'm glad to see Lizzie Dole going down the tubes.
Also glad to see Jeanne Schmidt going down, (vial bitch)
And a host of others who deserve getting tossed.

Lest we forget though, like the guy in the bicycle race, the race is not over yet, so keep working and peddling. We have to finish this thing.

Indeed.

for entering the Republican version of the big tent has always been checking your maverick tendencies at the door. As hollow as his claim to maverick status always was it was all he ever really had.

I wish Timmy was here to see all this.

mclame was limping out of the gate. Then he shot himself in the foot with the caribou barbie vp fiasco.

And then there's the whole 'maverick' thing.
I've always found the whole 'maverick' epithet amusing at best.
Maybe if he was 30 years younger and hadn't been a complete disaster as a pilot. Maybe. But on him it's always felt tacked on. Like one of his political toadies made it up for him.

When I used to hear the word maverick, before it became a one word punchline, the first thing it brought to my mind was a cow. Isn't that what it's supposed to be? One that gets away from the herd? If I had to think about it for a moment then I might pick out the memory of a cheesy detective show from the 80's.

I've never understood what exactly he was trying to convey with such a completely inappropriate nick name.
If he wanted to try something embarrassing to make himself seem more youthful why didn't he just buy some age-inappropriate clothing and attempt skate boarding?

He had a story that he told about himself that, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, he repeated over and over for years. Because he had told that story so many times he thought everyone knew the story. Throughout this campaign he has repeated over and over that people know him and trust him. In reality, not that many people know the senior Senator from Arizona. So his behavior carried as much weight as his words. That is why he has lost the support of so many people who only had his word to go by before.

Pretty words now, Rep. Shays, but we all know Republicans are obstructionists in the end.

:D

Your headline made me lol!

these fucks all used the scorched earth play

they have poisoned the waters for an obama administration, should he win

the union is broken

instead of tossing mccain under the bus, each of these fucks should throw themselves on their swords....literally

How many of these fools praising McCain's (never-existent) ability to break from the Republican party were applauding that before the economy crashed?

While plausible deniability remained that Bush didn't screw everything up, breaking from the Party was a terrible sin.

Shays has supported the Bush criminal policies more then McCain. Shays openly said the Generals should not have had to testify in how our soldiers were murdered by other soldiers. Pat Tillman was murdered and Shays said that's not the public's business. Shays has received his kick backs from the White House and is now trying to save his job by tricking the voters.

"We all know McCain is going to lose but does that mean you kick him in the teeth on his way down."

No, I think doing so at this point is more than appropriate. This guy's been asking for it for some time, and McCain could use some comeuppance.

I'd say a kick in the teeth is very appropriate.
He deserves at least one for the disgusting hate-filled march down the crapper he has dragged everyone through.

The mere fact that these fronts/apologists for the hijacked Republican party use the Madison Avenue term "brand" to designate their political persona tells you that their concept of an elected representative in a democracy is out the fucking window and that they are showing themselves to be the true Mussolinian Fascists/corporatists that they really are.

"He has lost his brand as a maverick"

Its just a brand. You can't be a maverick in reality by voting with the establishment 90% of the time.

Speaking of party hacks jumping ship...

One of the most eagerly anticipated spectacles to emerge from an Obama win (and a Democratic sweep through congress) will be to watch that hapless jagoff Joe Lieberman fumble around trying to cozy up to anyone who might take him. I predict that very few will sign up for that deal. We're talking major entertainment. Payback's a bitch...

I agree, it will be fun watching that pathetic SOB puppy dogging around. Of course, if he ends up being the 60th vote, he'll still be in biz. In which case I'll ignore him and watch with joy as the entire Republican party and their cheerleaders implode.

That suckass is going into isolation. When I heard him praise Palin I realised he's just like the rest of them.

I have always admired Shays, he is never afraid to tell it like it is. He's one of the few republicans I respect.

Shays is one of the last Moderate Republicans left, but he's voted too many times with the right wing of his party. Last poll I saw, it was very close between him and Jim Himes. But I'm in his district and I know a load of people that are voting a straight Democratic ticket for the first time. If my mini sample is any indicator, Shays will go down.

Respect and republican two words that should never be used in the same sentence!

Dear John,

In these tough times, don't despair. There is always hope Palin will tap you to be her running mate in 2012, and you can try it AGAIN. She can wheel you out in your chair, and try for the sympathy vote. Better luck next time, schmuck.

Shays is just another in a long line of good republican opportunist, willing to do whatever to whoever to keep his seat!

"I just don't see how [McCain] can win," Shays said in an interview here on Sunday.
