The Great NPR Debate
Today's newest effort to de-fund NPR in the House of Representatives came with a debate that had moments which must be seen and savored. On the serious side, there was Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who reminded the House that the airwaves belong to citizens, not corporations.
His points were well-taken, but of course they fell on deaf ears. Eric Cantor actually managed to come to the floor and cite the O'Keefe NPR slam, which even Glenn Beck's site managed to debunk. So then Anthony Weiner comes to the floor, and spices things up a bit.
The transcript will not do Weiner's speech justice, but here it is anyway:
Crisis averted, ladies and gentlemen. What a relief. What a relief. I'm glad we got the economy back going, I'm glad we've secured our nuclear power plants, I'm so glad the Americans are back to work. We finally found out our problem. We discovered a target that we can all agree upon.
It's these guys. This is the problem, it's Click & Clack, the Tappet Brothers. We're finally getting rid of them. Thank God we solved this problem for the country. Now let's look at them. Let's look at the record here.
For one, they talk in that Boston accent. Cah tawk? It's a car. It's a car, ladies and gentlemen. I need to call Congresswoman Capuano whenever they're on the air.
Secondly, they talk about master cylinders and slave cylinders. It's kinky! And so I am glad my Republican friends are finally getting to the bottom of this.
And then with all the giggling and snorting they do every week on their show, it's got to be some kind of a code. They're clearly talking to the Russians or the Chinese or something with all that giggling and snorting.
It is why I'm so relieved that we had this emergency session that we waived the rules of the House to require 72 hours so we finally get these guys off my radio. Click & Clack the Tappet Brothers on Car Talk. I know it. Because these guys clearly are political. Well, I don't know if they're political, they make no sense about most of what they say. But you know, I'm glad we're finally not going to have to listen to them. I'm glad the Republican party finally said enough of Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers.
That clearly was what the American people said in campaign 2010, clearly it's in their Contract with America or something, right? Get rid of Click and Clack? It's about time. I have to tell you something, because the last thing we want is informative solutions to how we fix our cars and the Car Talk puzzler. And think about the people we're finally going to put out of work. You know, their customer care rep, Heywouldjoobuzzoff? (I'll tell you how to spell that later, I say to the stenographer) And the director of ethics, Youlyinsack. All of these guys that are finally going to be taken off the public payroll.
The Republican Party. No one can say they're not in touch. They get it. They understand where the American people are. The American people are not concerned about jobs and the economy, what's going on around the world.
They're staring at their radio, saying get rid of Click and Clack. Finally my Republican friends are doing it. Kudos to you.
[applause]
Update: The bill passes 228-192.

These fucking Republican assholes ran for for office on a platform that they were going to kick start the economy. So far all that they have done is dick around with bullshit that has not got one fucking thing to do with the goddamned economy. Jobs? It is like they have no fucking idea that the word is even in the English fucking language. Same old shit as 1994 - look at bright shiny shit that means nothing. Idiots.
Politicians spouting BS while campaigning and acting like damn fools in office? What is the world coming.
I hear ya, though. These people work for us. We got together and appointed them. And, this is what they do? It's their damned union contract, what says we can't fire them for another year and a half. Not to mention the outrageous benefits and slacker hours. You'd think these people were running the show, the way they've lined their pockets and kicked up their heels.
Really, it does make you wonder who is in charge here.
are the ones who "voted" for these ass clowns. Didn't they learn enough from years of Bush the Dumber?
They were listening to the wrong radio station. If they'd been listening to NPR, instead of Limbaugh, they wouldn't have voted for the Tea Party. Hell, if they'd done any research outside the conservative mediasphere, they wouldn't have jumped on board with this BS.
And, thus, it makes perfect sense that the TeaParty wants public radio out of business. It's direct ideological competition.
The real question is, why the bullshit? The funding won't be cut. Remember, these guys have a majority in ONE chamber. They just have a media echo-chamber.
As for NPR. I think they did the right thing. Never really a bad thing to fire a CEO. I don't hold any illusions that she was some kind of radical leftist, out to change society. I'm not shedding any tears.
Remember, NPR isn't liberal. It's just LESS conservative. They have all the same BS "experts" on, they're just willing to occasionally let a caller through who will speak truth to power. The hosts would never presume. It's just a symptom of how LOW our expectations of veracity have become, that we would bemoan this "scandal".
That said, I listen every day, and I contribute.
I can't listen anymore...they just have too many wimpy and ultra-conservatives on there....save me from Cokie Roberts, PLEASE!!
I'm unemployed, so I can't contribute, but my daughter is a loyal NPR listener and contributes what little she can. This is just the opening salvo in a sustained campaign of the Rethugs to eliminate all forms of "liberal" media...or anything that's not Faux Noise.
If this keeps up, I fully expect that someday we will be like "1984" with Faux being the official national news source.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
Orwell saw the future, and it was us.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
There are plenty of people on this site who constantly said they weren't going to bother voting in the mid-terms because the dems are just as bad as the republicans. To me those are the real idiots.
head...if not for those idiots, we wouldn't have a damn Rethuglican House and all those damn Rethuglican Governors....the country might be looking a little different these days.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
I'm glad someone gets it.
The guy has done very little that a Republican President wouldn't have done....
- Obamacare is just Bob Dole's plan from 1993
- The U.S. military is still in Afghanistan and Iraq, and Guantanamo is still open
- More permits have been issued for deepwater drilling and mountaintop removal
- Obama has requested more funding for nuclear plants and less funding for heating assistance to the poor
- The only significant executive order signed by Obama allowed guns in national parks
- The Treasury Department and the WH are run by Wall Street executives
- The jobs czar is the CEO of General Electric
What's worse is that, despite all this, Obama has zero opposition from within his own party. Apparently most Democrats are perfectly fine having a Republican as the leader of their party. In fact, I would bet that Obama could eliminate NPR and STILL get the Democratic nomination.
I'm not saying Obama is perfect or even all that good. But if you seriously are proposing that he is no different than Bush or no different than what a McCain/Palin presidency would be like there really isn't much point in having a discussion.
is akin to blameing workers for the CEO who decides to move the company overseas. If the democratic leadership cannot give you a reason to vote - then why blame those who don't?
is just really cool huh?
Look at all the people here clamoring for a recall. I agree with them and wish them luck but wouldn't it have been a lot easier to show up and defeat the tea baggers in the first place?
Politics is not an all or nothing came. If you don't get everything you want you don't whine like a little baby and take your ball and go home. At least you don't if you care about making real change. It takes time and compromise. If the democrats didn't give you enough go out and nominate real leftists in the primaries. I would help you do that. In fact I spent a fair amount of time trying to do that in the last election. But if you can't you don't just give up and concede to the enemy.
First, I'm not "crying and taking my ball and going home" nor am I blameing those who didn't feel the need to show up. Frankly the dems had better figure out a better platform than "we are better than the other guys."
Conversely, one could say that those who vote democrat no matter what their policies are - are rather short sighted.
I agree. If the opposition party cannot provide a viable alternative, they do not get my vote. This crap started with the Nader thing in 2000.
I hope the DNC crumbles and reforms. Get rid of the neo-liberals, corporatists, and other globalist assholes and remake the labor movement.
Then I'll care.

Sorry dude I would have voted for the toaster oven those Bush regulators were snorting coke from over Palin/McCain.
new democratic party will be just like Chimpy's.
Hell ive been emailing the admins of Crooks & Liars and Huffpo and dozens of liberal blogs trying to get people together for a counter Douchbagger protest FOR YEARS....
But Liberals are content to sit on their asses and whine about how bad it is. All the while Obama can still waltz your ass off to Gitmo or have the CIA MURDER YOU if he wants to.
Yeah, but if they move the system further to the right, it's mission accomplished for them. Victory at all costs. That's how they see it.
I don't believe in God. Teach a man to be a good citizen and you have solved the problem of life.

The bill has no chance of passing the Senate or getting a signature. So all this is is another Republican scheme to avoid actually working.
Isn't there a way to make them take up the jobs issue? Shame isn't working...they have none.
those "Second Amendment Remedies"....Conservatives just LOVE those!
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
and it's money. Well, that and power.

Find a way to hurt their cash flow and then you've got their attention.
Trouble is: How?
Religion will be the downfall of Humanity.
well, now you have the idea of the mind set of the people that support these folks. Also what happens when down hearted libs stay home and don't vote. That's just what repukes want. Only white property owning males can vote.
only the morons that voted repuke believe that they would do anything for the good of the country. look around you the morons are everywhere.
I was talking to some young people today who were despondent over the election of facsist goon Snyder here in Michigan. "We thought he was going to be a good governor. CEO and all - you know."
I told them to take this lesson through the rest of their lives.
First of all, a CEO is the last person you want running your country. The steal everything, screw the workers, and run the companies into the ground. You know - like W and Cheney.
I also informed them that yes, what they are seeing is the modern GOP Bircher nazi party. That they really are as evil and stupid as they seem, and they are either going to be crushed, or take all of us down with them.
They were also despondent over what a loser Obama was, and they called the democrats whimps. "Why didn't they fix things when they had those huge majorities in 2009?"
They are learning early.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
If the republicans destroy us by accident, or on purpose, the result is the same. It's madness to let this go on. There needs to be a national recall of republicans.

Fellow (reasonably young... I mean, is 30 still young?) Michigander here.
Snyder ran Gateway. Maybe you recognize the name, and if you're in IT... well, I don't have to say more. I would have kept that covered up, not touted it. Under his tenure, Gateway outsourced and then sold to the Taiwanese. I wondered what people were smoking? Maybe thinking he'd buy them all a ticket to China, where the job prospects are better?
His backers are the DeVos (who ran a failed campaign, and was CEO of Amway) family. Yeah. That's just what this state needs, the CEO of the worlds most successful (blatant) pyramid scheme. I mean, at least they're up front about it, and they have a decent product.
Good gravy. People don't seem to recognize that THEY are the CEO. They are the ones who run the state. We're hiring employees, not bosses.
I mean, not to say I'm singing the praises of Obama. But, why would anyone ever vote for a republican? The bullshit that party has pulled is beyond compare.
At least the younguns have enough functioning brain cells to see that they made a terrible mistake. Time for them to stick their finger in their throats, puke up the Kool-Aid, then do what the Repukes admonish us to do - eat your spinach. The spinach is believing in working people who actually produce things instead of glib CEO's who tell you to trust them. They'll keep dangling the shiny tin foil in front of you, but now the kids know it's nothing.
Very good response you offered to the young people you were talking to. Another thing I think I might have added with regard to the problem of CEO as a government executive is that the whole notion of "running government like a business" is deeply flawed. A CEO's primary, overriding objective is to increase the value of his shareholders' stock by whatever means necessary, be it through achieving gains in productivity and efficiency, M&A activity or what have you. The job of government, and hence of a government's chief executive, however, is much more complex, requiring the executive to find (ideally, at least) some sort of reasonable, equitable balance among an enormous array of competing interests on a scale that most CEO's are never expected to address.

I always thought the job of our government was to successfully care for and advance the freedom and pursuit of happiness of ALL its citizens, and to care for those who needed help. Also, supposedly, in a democracy, EVERYONE pitches in and EVERYONE benefits in one way or another.
Obviously, not so here. Today, in THIS country, we have rich people funding powerful politicians who want to gut the states and drain the US Treasury giving tax breaks to big corporations (who, incidentally, are more profitable today, in a recession, than they have been in the last 60 years), and the top 2 % wealthiest of the land. They want to crush the Unions, which are the only resource of the middle class to gain decent wages and benefits, de-fund the public schools so the children of the poor and the middle class cannot get an education, and totally eliminate all corporate taxes, which should be going to rebuild the infrastructure of our country, which is crumbling beyond repair.
And, oh yes....get rid of those subversive auto mechanics and those damned homosexual puppets on Sesame Street.
“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”
I have been saying this; since Bush, I have been saying this. All one has to do, is read the Republickem platform if you want to know what is in store for anyone who isn't a part of the plt (people like them)!

if we can do away with Prairie Home Companion... yuck! It always makes me choke on my lattes and scones.
Who's more psycho, the republicans, who are totally psycho, or the rest of congress that let the republicans lead them around by the nose?
It is irresponsible to let this continue for another day, another hour, another minute. Make it stop!
"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"
-= Franklin Delano Roosevelt =-
Because as we all know, we have created a government structured so that all that has to be done to "make it stop" is to press the big red stop button every senator and congress member has on their desk.
I sympathize, but actual change requires more than bumper sticker generalities. We spent a long time digging ourselves into this hole, getting out isn't going to be easy.
Recall them. Elect other people.
These aren't generalizations. Dumb fuckers elected dumber representatives, who believe they can save the government and the nation by torching it.
It's a simple solution -- if a diaper is full of shit, you change it. I'd wager our senators are fuller of shit than the Augean Stables at this point. Change 'em. Run better people against them.
If you have less corruption in the Senate, House, and Presidency, the Supreme Court can be rid of the terrible Reagan/Bush/Bush appointees.
That's not working. The "throw the bums" out concept makes us feel good, but it's just not realistic. The system is too broken and corrupt for that. It starts at elections.
We do what we do and wait for the right moment to strike. Then we organize and take what we want by overwhelming force. Hopefully that's a non-violent thing but look at Egypt. Some violence is unavoidable and it won't be us who instigates it.
Sorry, folks. The days of asking them to stop are over.
I don't believe in God. Teach a man to be a good citizen and you have solved the problem of life.

We''ll wait for the recall to pass the required number of signatures and take it from there.
I'll do what i can to help Wisconsin to get those signatures. You should do the same. We all should.

Good question, the certifiably insane republicans, or the democrats with the largest majorties (almost ever) thinking we wouldn't notice them rolling over and playing dead?
I despair at the power that money has in our system. I have voted in every election since I was eighteen (1972) but sometimes I wonder why I bother. By the way, that first election I was in the Navy during the Viet Nam War and voted for McGovern. Years later I read The Wild Blue about George McGovern written by Stephen Ambrose. Wow, the guy is a genuine hero.
... rather than the normal slacktivism, why the hell aren't we actively protesting?
Seems as though it's pretty easy on this one. If the enemy is corporate radio, interfere with corporate radio. A single source of radio interference is easy to track down and stop, but if it were to be crowd-sourced, you could block out Corporate America and its corrupt grasp of the airwaves. Hell, the entire pop-music pushing machine could be brought to a screeching halt. If NPR can't have the airwaves, no corporate scum-sucker can either.
Of course, it would be branded as "terrorism". Fuck, scratch the whole thing. I don't want to live in Gitmo. :(

Anonymous was a terrible joke until it became a useful tool to help people. Would be fantastic if all of those people in Guy Fawkes masks wanted to turn their collective might towards something like this.
The only thing we have left is strength in numbers, and the corporations and the corrupt corporatocracy know it. They're trying to strip collective bargaining and union rights because they know that when people stand together, they can topple anything.
If "Secret Millionaire" or "Jerry Springer" aren't on. Them's some good circuses.
now they'll just start monitoring your communications (if they aren't already).
Hey, good idea. In fact, the FCC is thinking about giving away the amateur 440 MHz band, and that's a very popular one. Those hams are pissed, and they know exactly how to create the right kind of interference....it's not easy or necessarily cheap.
FASCISTS. NAZI BASTARD FASCISTS. Kill the Unions. Kill or Own the Media. Defund Education. WTF.
Why aren't we fighting these guys with all we got and calling them out on their false flag terrorist tactics. Why do we insist on fighting with our strong hand tied behind our back. They stole the fucking elections in 2000, sent the Anthrax to Leahy and Daschle the two top leaders of the opposition party, killed Mike Connell before he could testify in 04. WTF. Why are so many in the media silent about these guys crimes.
We are going to lose this effing country and society if we don't stand up and fight full on. Damn it.

With all the disgraced
creepspersonalities who have flocked to Fox recently (Rove, Huckabee, Palin, Bolton, etc.) and thehate mongererstalking heads(O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck, Cavuto, etc) who were already there, combined with the recently electedidiotspoliticians, things keep getting worse day by day.I could even reach back further and add the elevation of the
activistsupreme justices who helped get money moving by making corporations into people who then helped create the teabaggers whose main slogans were 'cut taxes', 'stop government paid abortions', 'get the government off my back', etc. I have been suspicious, and becoming ever more so, that Fox is complicit in the current situation.O'Reilly has always been very vocally anti NPR, abortions and anything 'far left' loony Democrat. Hannity is the one who, as far as I know has brought up Jeremiah Wright, Chicago (the guy who sold Obama the house), Jones, O'Keefe (via Breitbart), and a whole bunch more (my mind is spinning). I won't even mention Beck because if I watched any of his stuff regularly I would go nuts.
Then look at all who come to be educated by hyphenated titled Hannity. this morning, on npr...they had a conservative economist, extolling the virtues of deregulation....the repukes just dont bother listening
It's that THEY don't own it.
My mouth just waters salivating at thought of how interesting it's going to be for the non-corporate personhood. Coming soon to a neighborhood near you.
... it all makes one wonder why lawyers specialize in various specialties ... "Corporate Law" being one of them.
If a special branch of law is needed for Corporations, but Corporations are "people" ... why is it a legal specialty?

I tell you what I did -- I just pledged monthly amounts to my local public tv/radio (2 stations) that we listen to the most. Because this is going to hurt small towns and rural areas the most. I've given in the past, but I made monthly pledges because of what happened today.
They hate public tv/radio because of the model (non-profit, not advertising supported). If you have advertisers, you have pressure on your investigative content to not irritate to lose advertising dollars. That's why they want to shut down the National Weather Service -- they want for profit.
Have you heard commercial radio news?! it's fluff, half of it is about celebrity news. They've let go most of their international news reporters in TV news as it is. NPR has some of the best reporting around.
And the claim that they are biased towards liberal -- I think they make a big effort to be fair and unbiased. However if all their donations are coming from liberals because conservatives are pumped up to believe that public radio is unAmerican -- do they expect NPR to root for the party that wants to shut them down? They want all TV and radio to be advertiser/network supported so that it CAN be biased and controlled. I'd rather get my news from an outlet that has no financial interest to slant the story. Frankly the best investigative news comes from NPR and the BBC.
I agree with Randi Rhodes, what she's been saying for years -- the news has been cancelled, it's all infotainment. NPR doesn't fit that model, so it has to be pressured.
So I pledged a good amount today to both my public tv/radio outlets -- and I encourage everyone to do the same. Government funding should be continued, and reinstated as soon as elections make it possible. If you want to make sure it's there to support later, support it now!
Great idea sarahofsteel. I'm on it - better to do something than do nothing and simply fret.

Taxpayer money should not support Planned Parenthood.
Taxpayer money should support abstention only education.

In addition I want Taxpayer funded support for theLGBT issues of discrimination, in fact to fight all discrimination against non-chosen differences.

Neither is it the unfortunate fact of some NPR exec being caught candidly admitting what everybody with the brain of a sea urchin already knows: the Teabaggers are the suburban league of the KKK, differing only in that their sheets are polyester floral prints instead or the traditional homespun.
NO!
What is at stake are the several HUNDRED, FULL-POWER FM licenses, in the highly desirable "low side" of the dial licenses/frequencies which will become available to Clear Channel when the non-profits which own them no longer have CPB money to help meet expenses.
I have no idea, and I spent about 15 minutes on Google trying to find out, what a mid-major market, full-power, low-side license goes for these days, but I'd bet it's in the millions. And Big-Market stations, multiples of that.
The issue is not now, nor has it ever been, NPR's "o'er-weening pride." It's shekels, pure and simple. The drama about the tapes is just kabuki...
