That tea party is so grass rootsy they're holding strategy sessions at The Heritage Foundation. Good thing they're just looking out for the little people. I found C-SPAN's description of this program rather odd:

Tea Party leaders talked about the future of the movement among new members of the 112th Congress. Following their remarks, they responded to audience members' questions.

"Tea Party leaders" huh. And just who are those "leaders"?

  • Michael Franc, Vice President, Government Relations, Heritage Foundation
  • Ed Morrissey from HotAir
  • Billie Tucker First Coast Tea Party
  • Byron York, Washington Examiner

I didn't know Franc, Morrissey and York were "Tea Party leaders". The only self-identified "Tea Party" leader who was there, Billie Tucker had this to say about "entitlements".

Q: Now all three of you have mentioned that for true financial reform we need to cut back on entitlements. Is there the motivation and the courage and the desire for the tea party to go into that fight? That's a long hard fight to cut Social Security, food stamps, Medicare, all those programs.

TUCKER: Yes and we've had discussions about that because we know it is a problem. Again, the American people are smart and the tea party members are smart. And they know we cannot talk about, you know, doing away with spending without really looking at the entitlement programs. The word that we do not like in the tea party movement is to say that Social Security is entitlement.

People are sick of that and they want that changed. They paid into a system that was set up by this government, again, sort of like this health care, was not entitlement; we all paid into it. The problem is corruption happened and they didn't do with the money what they were supposed to do with the money. So we're willing to work on that issue, but we're not willing to give it all up, because they screwed it up. Does that make sense?

But when it comes to entitlements for people that are not willing to work, absolutely, we're willing to talk about that as well. Because there are a lot of good people out there that can get to work but they're now being paid... they're on the dole of the government and we can't have that.

So we're willing to negotiate. We're going to take care of the people who paid into the system. I've got a 85 year old mother in law who lives with us. She paid into that system and doggone it she's gonna' get out what she's entitled to. And she's willing to give up a little but not everything for people that are unwilling to work.

Gee, I wonder who she could be talking about here?

Yup straight out of the GOP playbook. She is correct about SS...and then over the decades it has mutated into more than just financial safety net it was meant to be. The comment about able bodied people 'not wanting to work' is of course out of line. If, just if, you are lucky enough to have a job these days that can feed your family and pay some bills, you're most likely not making enough. As for for those who have not worked in sometime...It's not because they don't want to, it's because there are no 'real' jobs. She started sounding like she knew what she's talking, then went directly to 'stupid'. It's always the poor peoples fault isn't it?

Right under the all tea party anger is a hell of alot of fear. Fear that they are really just a pink slip or an "entitlement" cut from becoming one of the poor jobless folks they despise, judge, and blame. With the policies they advocate their worst fears just may come true.

Amitola's picture

and the Reich-wing of the Repuke party has used that fear to take control of the House and will now turn it right back on all those dumb suckers who 'marched' and chanted for the Beckster and Miss Sarah, yew betcha'!

This clown is talking out of both sides of her mouth.....a characteristic of a "genuine teabagger". So long as I get what I want......then screw the rest.

A few corrections for this idiot. Not EVERYONE paid into the system. It was originally set up for handicapped and the forgotten poor. Today, most of us pay into it...but not all. And maybe it's time to cut off her 87 year old mom...cause I'm sure she has gotten more than SHE ever paid into it.

What a lame bunch of fools.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late. I can tell you one thing for sure that she is not willing to give up her entitlement to eat and yes she did eat. Getting down to the facts, her mother-in-law paid in to the system. How long did she work? How much did she pay in? Do her loving son and daughter-in-law benefit from her Social Security now or will they at her death? Once again, it's this anger over someone getting something for nothing. The lazy hordes just are sitting around waiting for handouts. This isn't true of most of the people whom I know. Most of them would rather work than sit on their derrieres. When did it all get to be about me,me,me? These people are puppets being used by the rich to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. Ain't w e got fun! Someone needs to tell her that her Cleopatra do didn't.

Skruffy's picture

I'm sick of conservatives (and the media parroting them) attaching disdain to the word "entitlements". I paid for my federal retirement (all $23,000 a year of it), and am entitled to it. I also am entitled to the Social Security benefit I'll eventually get, as I also worked enough quarters for civilian employers to qualify (and my SS payment will be reduced because of my federal retirement). I paid into Medicare and am therefore entitled to it.

I highly resent hearing over and over the phrase "these entitlement programs" as though we who paid into them are leaches of some kind. "Entitled to" means "earned" in most cases.

Medical Diagnosis by Video's picture

And she's willing to give up a little...

Really? Why?

If she couldn't live with you, would she be able to make it on her own? What if you and your husband died in a crash on the way back from a Teabagger rally? What about her then? Why should she have to "give up a little" when the banksters we bailed out are INCREASING their bonuses yearly since the crash?

Teabaggers are "smart"? No, they are not. Just a fact. You prove that fact.
