Thanksgiving Address from the President-Elect, Nov. 26, 2008

In a preview of his weekly address, President-elect Barack Obama addressed the nation on the occasion of Thanksgiving, nearly one hundred and fifty years after President Lincoln called for the last Thursday in November to be set aside to acknowledge our blessings. Good morning.

Nearly 150 years ago, in one of the darkest years of our nation’s history, President Abraham Lincoln set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of Thanksgiving. America was split by Civil War. But Lincoln said in his first Thanksgiving decree that difficult times made it even more appropriate for our blessings to be – and I quote – "gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people."

This week, the American people came together with families and friends to carry on this distinctly American tradition. We gave thanks for loved ones and for our lasting pride in our communities and our country. We took comfort in good memories while looking forward to the promise of change.

But this Thanksgiving also takes place at a time of great trial for our people.

Across the country, there were empty seats at the table, as brave Americans continue to serve in harm’s way from the mountains of Afghanistan to the deserts of Iraq. We honor and give thanks for their sacrifice, and stand by the families who endure their absence with such dignity and resolve.

At home, we face an economic crisis of historic proportions. More and more Americans are worried about losing a job or making their mortgage payment. Workers are wondering if next month’s paycheck will pay next month’s bills. Retirees are watching their savings disappear, and students are struggling with the cost of tuition.

It’s going to take bold and immediate action to confront this crisis. That’s why I’m committed to forging a new beginning from the moment I take office as President of the United States. Earlier this week, I announced my economic team. This talented and dedicated group is already hard at work crafting an Economic Recovery Plan that will create or save 2.5 million new jobs, while making the investments we need to fuel long-term economic growth and stability.

But this Thanksgiving, we are reminded that the renewal of our economy won’t come from policies and plans alone – it will take the hard work, innovation, service, and strength of the American people.

I have seen this strength firsthand over many months – in workers who are ready to power new industries, and farmers and scientists who can tap new sources of energy; in teachers who stay late after school, and parents who put in that extra hour reading to their kids; in young Americans enlisting in a time of war, seniors who volunteer their time, and service programs that bring hope to the hopeless.

It is a testament to our national character that so many Americans took time out this Thanksgiving to help feed the hungry and care for the needy. On Wednesday, I visited a food bank at Saint Columbanus Parish in Chicago. There – as in so many communities across America – folks pitched in time and resources to give a lift to their neighbors in need. It is this spirit that binds us together as one American family – the belief that we rise and fall as one people; that we want that American Dream not just for ourselves, but for each other.

That’s the spirit we must summon as we make a new beginning for our nation. Times are tough. There are difficult months ahead. But we can renew our nation the same way that we have in the many years since Lincoln’s first Thanksgiving: by coming together to overcome adversity; by reaching for – and working for – new horizons of opportunity for all Americans.

So this weekend – with one heart, and one voice, the American people can give thanks that a new and brighter day is yet to come.

The reversing of eight years of robbing the poor to give welfare to the rich has begun. It's very much needed.

Simple equations like salaries = consumers have escaped the corporate leeches.

see http://cabdrollery.blogspot.com/2008/11/makin...

Our saving grace comes from the fact that Wall Street (and our lawmakers) greed hit the entire world. Corporate America doesn't care about us, the American shopper (who keeps the American economy afloat), because they could always take their products elsewhere in the world. Mom and pop shops would be devastated, but that doesn't matter to the big dogs, simply find a consumer elsewhere.

That elsewhere is as bad (or worse if you think about Iceland) is the only thing that might be able to save the people in this country. It's awful that worldwide ruination is what it took to possibly save our collective asses from what Bush has wrought upon us.

Just trying to figure out how we can crawl back out of the hole the right wing has dragged us into, and leave them in it.

is like the worst catastrophic disease. Eradicate one and another comes along behind it. Usually worse, too. Think Nixon and now those people who are in the Bush admin. Bad to worse.

They only came back because Jerold Ford robbed the people of hearings that could have exposed the wrongdoing and helped prevent a repeat of it. Until we bring the actual crimes out into the light we have no hope of preventing them from happening again (and even worse next time).

Yup

Clinton let shit go and now Obama will, too.

Pelosi and Reid allowed it with absolutely no ramifications whatsoever.

And all of us, our children, and our grandchildren will pay. Until every one is no longer.

Obama is going to do this every week? For the next four, and hopefully eight, years?

I'm still pinching myself. Articulate, passionate, COMpassionate, intelligent, calm, reasonable, optimistic. If we were to judge what America deserves by the way she's voted and behaved over the past ten years, we would never have been this lucky.

The non-cynical side is still celebrating. The cynical side is down on its knees fervently praying, non-existent dieties or not, that this man isn't all smoke and mirrors. Jan 20th can't come soon enough, and then we'll see which side of me was right...

when I first read it, I was in tears.

exactly. I hate to think what we would be facing if the election had gone the other way. Shudder.

I can't even think of a McPlain/moose killer admin.

Chris Matthews in Congress???

Complete intelligent sentences. Perfect English pronunciation.
Executive projection. Above all, no smirks, swagger or dumb ass jokes.
Mr. President-elect Obama. I thank God we got you.

... so I was wondering what the wingnuts were saying about it: http://forums.hannity.com/showthread.php?t=11... . Yes, I went slumming at the Hannity.com forum to see what the frightened children who call themselves "Hannitized" had to say about the speech.

What a hoot. Page after page of people pawing and snorting because Obama didn't mention God in his speech.

I had not noticed that "God was left out" because, in all respects, the speech seems so appropriate to the occasion. But now that the Righteous have pointed it out to me, I like the speech even better. What a refreshing change to get back to -- how did the Founders put it? -- "a decent respect for the opinions of mankind" rather than the divisive practices of the religious right.

It's all smoke and mirrors with Hannity. So to use the "Wizard of Oz" analogy, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, I am the Great and Powerful Hannity!" Boom, boom! Crash! Lightning Bolts! And of course, total horseshit. He...knows...nothing.

Even Alan Combes couldn't put up with his sorry ass any longer.

I traverse the wingnut sites to see what has their panties in a twist.

Everyone thanks god on Thanksgiving? Eh, not so much.

The wingnut sites can be great fun, can't they? Especially now that they're so devastated over the election. He's a Muslim! ... no, he's a socialist ... no, wait, he's an atheist ... oh my God, he's President-elect! Horrors! Calamities! LOL.

In one 4 min address he teaches us more than Bush the traitor has is 8 years.

Our president speaks..and he actually can pronounce every word and complete every sentance and at the end you actuall know what he was talking about and why.

I shouldn't be so impressed but after 8 long years of Spekr 'N Chef (yes I mean to type Chef) Bush I lost all hope that we could have a real leader who knows the difference between real and made up words!

And now I know how my parents and grandparents felt when Roosevelt spoke to them. They were still fearful of the times, but they put their trust in Roosevelt and the American spirit and they changed this country for the better. Barack Obama has the potential to lift this country from the malaise of the last 24 years of Reagan, Bush 1 and Shrub and a Republican Congress fighting Bill Clinton at every turn.

Anyone who doesn't get this should look at Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" again. It wasn't just about the men and women who fought WW2, it was telling the story of how they overcame the Great Depression, THEN fought the war, then revolutionizing this country.

... the absence of 'god', and I approve.

Is C&L going to be reposting Obama's address every week?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Obama fan and I understand that C&L is a partisan site but please don't lose your objectivity.

Mark Twain once said, no matter who you vote for, you get a politician. The mood about Obama's presidency is similar to the mood in Britain about Tony Blair in 1997. That didn't last, and Obama faces far greater challenges than Blair did.

As I've said, I'm an Obama fan, but I think C&L should perhaps practise a little professional detachment so as to maintain credibility as commentators, rather than to be seen as schills for the new administration.

I hope this comment is taken in the spirit in which it's offered. :)

I, for one, value what our president elect and soon to be president has to say now an for a long time to come. I want to know what they doing, who is doing it, what they are planning on doing.

Why on earth would you NOT want that?? After eight years of being kept in the dark. Honestly? That is what you want?

I want an open and an honest pesident.

and I hope that the various blogs I read continue to keep us apprised on what is going on, just as they have to this point.

I don't expect leniency for Obama, I just don't need to see the parade rained on just yet, since he hasn't done anything yet.

you just got the word, dont make waves!

We have been living in the rain for so long, please let us enjoy the ray of sunshine finally breaking through the clouds before warning us about skin cancer.

I know Obama is a politician. I'm pretty sure he's going to disappointment over something or other sometime in the future. I'm sure he's not as perfect as he currently seems. But please, don't piss in my cornflakes just yet. I want to enjoy this moment for as long as humanly possible.

Please enjoy your moment, I know I will.

I don't want to hear about the empty seats at the dining room table.

I want to hear him say that as soon as he is sworn in he is going to rescue these young people, get them out of Bush's hell hole and bring them home where they are needed and where they belong.

When he says that a sign of America's strength is "young people enlisting in a time of war", it curdles my blood. Young people "enlisting" is a relic of the travesty that he was elected to end. I don't want to hear the bromides about their "sacrifice". I don't want them to sacrifice their lives for this absolute bullshit.

The logical extension of a series of beautifully crafted, thoughtful and compassionate words going out into the ether on a regular basis, amplified by a chorus of harmonizing, graceful epithets soaring into idealistic and entirely achievable realms... well, magic is in the maker, right? The more the merrier! WORD.

Good morning.

Once upon a time there were three little bears.
They lived in the woods.
They were good bears.
There were other bears that were bad bears.
But now we are all little bears together bears.

And let us remember:
A stitch in time saves nine.
And never, ever, put your knife in the toaster.

I saw this wonderful picture of the Obamas, all four of them at a food drop on Thanksgiving. The President-Elect noted that he wished his children to learn how to be a part of this volunteerism.

This guy practices what he preaches. I will bet that the Secret Service had to carry their weight at the drop.

This is a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER who has reached the pinnacle of success. All the while we listen to his oratory over the next term he and his team will be organizing America into a community.

Nobody is ever going to make fun of Community Organizers again. Not even the RNC. The laugh is on them.

Obama is, even at this time when he is not yet president, more presidential than bush ever was. I am thankful that enough people voted for this type of change. We may yet have a chance at keeping the country going.

Good on you Mr. Obama - you a truly a breath of fresh air in the morass of mediocrity that is the current Washington, DC.
