Anyone else want to call bulls**t on this guy besides me? On C-SPAN's morning call-in show Washington Journal, a caller from Tacoma Washington called in and after carrying on about the evil expansion of government and those evil government workers and those evil government unions, the caller tells this whopper. He claims that he lives in a trailer home, and makes an annual salary of $100,000 a year, at the age of 51 he could never afford a down payment for a house because his federal taxes are too high.

The median household income in Tacoma is about $47K. Median house or condo value is about 260K. If this guy couldn't afford to buy a house by now, he's not managing his finances correctly. This is what happens to your brain after watching too much ClusterFox and listening to too much right wing radio. Brain fried and mad as hell. I only make $100,000 a year and the "man" is taking me down with all of those high taxes!!

He probably put all his $100,000 into Goldline shares, and wonders why he doesn't have $100,000 any more.

And he also claims that "the lesser people" who do all the absolutely necessary jobs in our society working 2 or 3 part time jobs to take home 20 - 30 grand a year are a bunch of deadbeats sucking off of uncle sam's teats, right? And his eyes glaze over if you say something like "hyperinflation of the housing market" too I bet.

pissed off patricia's picture

I call his comments a heaping pile of gold lined bs. He may make that much money, I don't know but if he couldn't save enough to make a down payment on a reasonable house, he's has way more problems than federal taxes. How many empty beer cans has he stacked outside his trailer home?

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

because he paid Joe the Plumber $300 K per year to lay pipe to his trailer potty.

This guy is clearly lying. If he was making $100,000 a year he could clearly afford to buy a house.

But that's the right wing for you...if they don't have a real argument they just make up their own "facts" and nobody in our media is willing to call them out on it...maybe Cenk Uyger but I don't see anyone else really doing their job pointing out these kinds of lies.

...anyone can say anything at anytime. Doesn't mean it's true and this is a perfect example. The idea that someone making that kind of money would be living in a trailer park is hilarious. Either he is really bad with money or he is really cheap and wants to live there. This whole thing sounds like Samuel the non-plumber and his idea that he is going to be making over 250k a year with a plumbing business when he isn't even a licensed plumber.

It is amazing to me how you can have so many people who will never make a 100k, let alone 250k, so worried about those that do make that kind of money. As propaganda you have to stand back and say bravo for how effective it is in getting people to advocate for the rich. Amazing.

Lester Roquefort's picture

This guy needs to employ some of those extreme money-saving strategies that people like him insist poor people use. No alcohol, no cigarettes, no simple pleasures. Does he need a car? He can only buy a clunker. Maybe he should only buy canned foods!

Or is he too above that because he's not one of "them"?

This guy is 51 yrs old, makes $100,000 annualy, lives in a trailer and he can't get a $100,000 mortgage? My better half and I have an annual income of about $85,000 and we built a $250,00 home 2 years ago with no problem so I think this guy isn't telling the whole story!

hackenbush's picture

In all fairness, two years ago they were pretty much giving money to anyone in order to resell their mortgage as mortgage backed securities.

Of course, that means that the moron in the article could have gone into almost any bank and gotten a loan for pretty much no money down ...

So what?

"I make X dollars, I can't afford to buy Y because of Z!"

That applies to everyone from the homeless in Bangladesh to Donald Trump. Life is about choices, and living in a larger home than your current domicile is not a necessity.

Perfect and concise analysis. Thanks.

Oh, good grief. These personal accountability people are the worst. Yes, Mr. Tacoma, if you want to buy a house, you have to make it a priority. Which, for some of us, means forgoing the designer clothes, fancy cars, every electronic toy that comes along, eating out constantly, housekeepers/gardeners, lavish vacations, etc.

Funny. I've been divorced and on my own for over 20 years and make less than half of what poor Mr. Tacoma does. Through careful planning, I've managed to buy a home and put a kid through college (granted, there was a meager child support during childhood, but no help for college from irresponsible right-wing dad who can't seem to hold on to two nickels because he quits every job he gets) -- and I'm still able to donate to several causes I support. Oh, and yes, I pay taxes and am thankful for the roads, bridges, library, parks, fire/police dept, etc., that they provide.

I think Mr. Tacoma needs to take a look around (the US and the world) and see just how good he has it. When he gets laid off (like millions of other Americans) then maybe I'll listen to his whining.

I saved up and bought a house when I worked at Starbucks. I suppose this proves that conservatives are so utterly bad with money that making $100k isn't enough. What'd he spend it on, hookers and blow?

I lost respect for American journalism long ago. I guess the American Newspeak for propaganda is "public relations." Which is what most "journalists" in America amount to right now.

The irony of it all, it is that with the current state of high speed communications and pervasive access to information, it has never been easier (and faster) to fact check statements. So maybe it was Huxley who got our future selves better than Orwell did?

He claimed to make $100K and only pay $19K. That's only 20% if you round off. that's a darn good tax rate. i pay more than 20% off my temp job making only $15/hr. only about 2 people in my entire family make $100k or or more and there are about 6 or so homeowners. the real reason this guy never owned a home is because he is obviously single and probably never had any children. there was no incentive to get one.

Tax the Rich's picture

Either that, or he sends it all to Franklin Graham and Wall Street investors.

And those guys would never be the ones to screw him over.

No way. It's all those sinking middle class workers who are trying to stave-off Trailorville themselves that are the problem.

With the housing market being the way it is, he could have bought two properties, live in one and rent out the other for extra income. What a scum bag.

Obviously this man used his money unwisely.

Why is that? Taxes for the under $200,000 earners is at a record low.
Since the government can't do anything right and only private enterprise can create meaningful jobs, why aren't the super rich, some of whom pay no taxes due to offshore shelters and super tax attorneys, creating jobs instead of just sitting on their sacks of money?
If they are unwilling to do that, tax the bast****s and give the money to the government to give it back to those from whom it was taken in the first place.

Trickle-down? BS! It is really 'suck-it-up' as the middle class gets laid off and those who don't get laid off get hit with taxes, other than income, like sales taxes, property taxes, use taxes, etc.

Perhaps if these fools would humble themselves and leave a committed life of quality service behind as their legacy they would be better off. But no---they'd rather pray to their golden calf "god" of possessions for their salvation.

We could get by with a fraction of what we currently use in this country. It's way past time to turn away from the evil of crass consumerism and harmonize ourselves with the earth's finite resources.

My partner and I lived in Tacoma waiting for our house to close from USDA. The house we bought in a very small town in eastern Washington, was a gov. repo. Together we make less than chicken scratch. But, because we are both sucking the tit of the Social Security cow, we qualified for a low income loan, and got the house for far less than it was worth. We are scum I know. How dare we get a house, when this poor hard working real American can't, it's simple,he makes too much. The tables have turned my friends, now we poor folks are the new elite, that should stir up the hornets nest of haters.
Check out USDA department of rural development for homes. Be willing to relocate to a rural community. some are just the out skirts of larger cities, don't make too much, have decent credit, and get your piece of the now fracured American pie. But don't tell your republican neighbors.

NMLib's picture

Making just over $20K a year, I was able to buy a house. Granted, I live in rural NM where housing prices are much lower but I wasn't exactly expecting to be able to afford (nor did I need) a 5,000-square foot country club estate. How can they allow these people to lie and get away with it like that-- and worse, what idiots are watching this and believing it?

Sarea's picture

Actually, he doesn't say whether he was self-employed. If he WAS self-employed his story might be true. Taxes for self-employed people SUCK. He would have had to have paid at LEAST $33K in taxes.

That's why it doesn't make sense to be a small biz owner unless you can clear at least $150K per year, so you can afford to set yourself up as a corporation. (Speaking as someone who USED to be self-employed :)

ronhohn's picture

that he paid about 18.5 - 19k in (cold hard cash (taxes) to the Fed.

A better question is: "What do you spend your money on? Prostitutes? Luxury cars? Alcohol? Drugs? Gambling?"

This fool makes as much sense, shares as much "valid truth" as michael savage. I'm a bit puzzled...which I shouldn't even care at this point....that the bush tax cuts are going to hurt him?? I thought he said he made 100K a year? How are the rollbacks to the rich going to affect this dillusional fruit cake?

Nation of morons. One just found the phone number of someone polite enough to listen to his diatribe.

Why he's complaining is beyond me. Do you realize hoe much 'bang for your buck' you really get for paying taxes?????
You get public education, retirement, medical, Fire and Police dept. MILITARY, fair Judicial system, jails, roads, bridges, etc. etc., etc.
Think of the alternative to taxes. IF YOU PRIVATIZE ANY PUBLIC AGENCY LIKE POLICE , IT WOULD COST 100 TIMES MORE THAN ALL YOUR TAXES PUT TOGETHER. Instead of Police the private security force Blackwater charges $1500 an hour to keep your neighborhood safe. Now that's only if your white, $3000 an hour if your a minority.
You get the point.

Some of you know I live in a trailer park right now, have done so for years, and that there are mainly farmworkers living here.

Well, dozens of families who've lived here over the last 20 years I've lived here, have managed to save for and buy a house, *on a farmworker's salary, which isn't much*. That is usually their big desired goal, to skip buying a newer trailer and instead save for that house.

The C-SPAN caller is a fucking liar. He probably hasn't saved because he's waiting for God to miraculously drop a house down from the sky for him.

This guy is seriously nuts.

My wife and I both 100% disabled, and our total household income is about $36,000 a year. We pay two mortgages (in Southern California) each month, totaling $1350, and we are up to date. We also have a 2007 car, which is ours free and clear.

This guy's rants are total bullshit. If we can keep our house on a total income of $36k certainly this guy can get a house on a yearly salary of $100K, even in Southern California.

Total bullshit. Cry me a river.

If I drank a case of beer every day, and spent my money on prostitutes and Oxycontin, I couldn't afford a home either. Go figure.

If he makes $100,000 a year and can't buy a house it's probably because he's buying other stuff. I saved for 5 years to buy my house in 1993. Every payday I saved $200-300 per paycheck having it deducted automatically I never touched the money and set my goal for a down payment. This guy is near my age so it is possible. I doubt this tea bagger ever saves and lives paycheck to paycheck and it' shis own damn fault he's a loser. They blame everyone else for their incompetence typical reichwinger.

Too bad Dr. Laura couldn't talk to Tacoma whiner boy. She could tell him to stop whining, stop blaming other people, take responsibility for his own finances, stop blaming government and get over his fantasy of an insulated government class of parasites he thinks is sucking him dry. They could both have a redeeming moment. This guy never should have gotten more than one sentence of airtime.

But from personal experience, I have to say that while I never had a steady salary of $100K per annum, I never had a problem buying a home with what I had. Of course, I never put most of my paycheck up my nasal cavities or into the veins of my arm, either. I was far too busy working to engage in such destructive patterns of behavior, let alone risk my employment in such a manner.

OTOH, is it barely within the realm of possibility, in a /snarky kind of way, that this Tea-Bagger had his sights set a little too high, like buying the White House maybe? What an ass-hat and a liar!

I've worked for the same agency of the federal government for 29 years. My last raise was a quarter and that was ten years ago. I saved for my down payment and have had the same house for 25 years and have 6 months to go to finish the mortgage. I bought a house that I could afford within a 50 minute commute into Orange County California from near Temecula. I do not make $100K but at the most $51K, I do not live out of my means, but at the same time I do allow myself some creature comforts. I've also bought property in Hawaii for retirement and it is almost paid off. I spent a month in Europe (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland). I have been able to do this because I planned and saved for it. This guy wants to live the "millionaires lifestyle" but blames everyone else except himself when he can't. You can not live in a representative democracy without having to pay taxes to maintain the infrastructure needed to keep a society from falling apart. As usual, the teabaggers want something for nothing or want others to pay and not them. When will the silent majority speak? It seems that we have gotten so lazy that when we become angry, we go to our computer and write an angry e-mail. What good is that going to do? The politicians and media don't care, they simply push the delete button. The issue becomes mute.

The "baggers were doomed from the start. They stayed under the umbrella of the Republican party. That party lives by rigid reactionary political ideology. They were long ago taken over by the fiscal far right and religious fanatics. Their operatives (Dick Armey an his Freedom Works)infiltrated the "baggers" from the start. They wanted to claim followers were from all parties, but we find out the "baggers" are really made up of disgruntled far right Republicans. They lose Independents that may be leaning their way as they move more to the right. How can any self respecting White, Black, Latino, Asian, gay, or union member vote for these crazies? In the long run the Republicans by electing this far right element will result in electing Democrats. That's better than candidates like this guy WA, O'Donnell DE, Angle NV, Paul KY, etc.
