Well isn't this lovely? 64 Democrats decided to sell out women's health with this horrid vote.
Final vote tally 240-194 with Shadegg voting present.
Word is it will be stripped out in committee. We'll see. I agree with Rayne over at FDL--Stupak Amendment Passes; 64 Dems Ask for Primary Opponents.
Final roll call for the Stupak amendment with the yeas and nays here.
And here's the roll call for the final bill. Ayes 220 with one Republican, Cao, voting yes, noes 215.

The last "pre-vote" of Republicans on whether to make last minute changes to the bill is coming to a close, with 10 Democrats voting with Republicans to keep debate open. Yeesh.
The final vote is up now. It should pass in this form, with the Stupak Amendment.
In truth, I'm a bit torn on the Stupak Amendment. It does provide for "exceptions" and is not an all-out ban on federal funding for abortion, which I think is far more than I'd of thought they could get into the bill and still pass.
ADDENDUM: Earlier, a parade of Republicans took the floor to "protect Medicare" from the nasty Democrats that "want to cut it". Funny how not a single one of them used the term "Medicare ADVANTAGE" to describe what would be cut. Each and every one of them called it "Medicare"... the very same government healthcare program they've been fighting to eliminate for 40 years. Now suddenly, they want everyone to believe they are the Champions of this government healthcare program??? Gimme a break!
There are days I wonder why I am a Democrat and this is one of them. This is a horrible, horrible amendment. First that a$$hole Price shouted down females and now this. I want the names of the 64 Dems who voted for this.
THE BILL JUST PASSED!
(
without a single Republican vote.Correction, make that 1.)And 39 Dems voting against it. 220 Yea votes (218 needed to pass.)
PS: Joseph Cao (R-LA), lone R to vote Yea.
The Dems are always the right party (of the two) to vote for, but one must always be ready for them to dissemble into complete pussies.
lesser of two evils
Both parties have the same masters, but Republicans are the masters' favorite puppets. The Dems' job is to make America look like a democracy by pretending to care for the working man while taking their bribes from corporations.
If America didn't look something like a democracy, we'd have to fight wars for oil instead of freedom and democracy.
Still, I'll continue to vote for them until we get a real left to counter the far right in this country.
weasels or weevils take your pick
I have to admit - I'm a bit surprised - my DLC Congress critter, Melissa Bean voted against the amendment.
Maybe I'll vote for her again after all. It'll depend on how she handles the health care bill.

Remember The FAMILY?
The Family is, in its own words, an “invisible” association, though its membership has always consisted mostly of public men. Senators Don Nickles (R., Okla.), Charles Grassley (R., Iowa), Pete Domenici (R., N.Mex.), John Ensign (R., Nev.), James Inhofe (R., Okla.), Bill Nelson (D., Fla.), and Conrad Burns (R., Mont.) are referred to as “members,” as are Representatives Jim DeMint (R., S.C.), Frank Wolf (R., Va.), Joseph Pitts (R., Pa.), Zach Wamp (R., Tenn.), and Bart Stupak (D., Mich.).

even though I'd heard his name associated with them. Scarce just sent me some quotes from the guy where he claims he just rents there and doesn't know what goes on in the house. Riiiggghhht.

WTF?
You CAN'T be surprised about that?
we knew that in 2004 and 2006
It is the Democratic Leadership Council Runs the Dem Party's Agenda, and not the "liberal-progressive" base. It is time that you all understand this. The Democratic Party has diminished the values and voices of its "liberal-progressive" base ever since it formed the Democratic Leadership Council.
And, yes, women have fell victim to the male-inspired Democratic Leadership Council. The sooner you all understand these realities and deal with it after confronting the facts, then you see why being a "liberal/progressive" Democrats now means very little.
The "liberal-progressive" rhetoric the Democratic Party uses on the talk shows and even that is less frequent that you all realize should tell you things which you are all intelligent enough to figure out.
The country has moved so far to the right that too many "liberals-progressives" think that conservative to moderate Democrats who oppose the far right Fascists of the GOP believe in liberalism or progressivism. NOT!!!!
I am an unabashedly Leftist Here and DO NOT LIKE THE DEMOCRATS appeasement, equivocation and sellout of leftist/progressive policies to the right wing Repukes.
From Gay Rights to Wage Earning/Jobs to Women’s Reproductive Health Issues, the Democrats now look to maintain their grip on power while compromising the core values of its leftist/progressive base.
The Democratic Party takes it leftist/progressive base for granted and when push comes to shove, goes with the Democratic Leadership Council agenda which is GOP-Lite, corporate centered, and favors a militarized foreign policy agenda built on “bipartisanship.”
Barack Obama will soon be sending over 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, yet, the leftist/progressive base still fail to see the president as a center-right corporate-militarist leader of which he has proven to be. Obama will not be looking into signing any real international agreements to curb emissions. Obama is turning into a failure on environmental issues as well.
Obama and the Democratic Party today are closer to the Catholic Church and Christian Fundamentalists on issues of:
1. Women’s right to choose –Yes a WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHAT SHE DOES WITH HER OWN BODY!!!!!!
2. Gay Rights – DADT, Gay Marriage – which Obama and the Democratic National Committee did nothing about in Maine last week, and supports the Defense of Marriage Act.
3. Democrats continue the big Spending on Defense Budgets and endless war funding.
My Congress Critter is a Blue Dog of course, but knowing that doesn't soften the blow in any way...

not good at all.
can't people see whats happening here?
1,990 pages? This bill is a trillion+ dollar windfall for the insurers whose lobbyists wrote it. Everyone is mandated to buy insurance, and the so-called public option will be MORE expensive than private. Plus there is no cap on premiums.
The only thing that can save us now is for the senate to kill health
insurancecare reform. They'd be doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. Obama does not have the balls to veto this crap.My prediction: if this passes, it is the end of the US. When people find out just how badly they've been screwed, the government will no longer be able to collect taxes and it will all come crashing down within 2 years, 3 tops.
of Medical "care" . . malpractice . . corrupt physicians and their organizations . . Corporate owned McHospital chains, Big Pharm, etc, etc . .
You need to get a brown paper bag and breathe into it a bit.
I've already got that healthcare plan. Its called, "Death by Poverty".
Just out, premiums are cumulative. You have to buy your own bottle of vodka though.
A Senate committee voted Tuesday night to restore $50 million a year in federal funding for abstinence-only education that President Barack Obama has pushed to eliminate.
News From Rita Swan, director, Children's Healthcare Is A Legal Duty:
"The mandate to reimburse religious and spiritual health care has been removed from the House bill, HR3962, the merged bill that is going to the floor. We are thrilled! Thank you for your letters and calls to Congresspersons. We will definitely thank FFRF in our next newsletter for your hard work on this.
We still have to win in the Senate, but I have a good feeling that momentum is on our side. Of course, this prayer-fee mandate was such an extremely ridiculous idea in the first place. Surely it is unconstitutional for the government to force payment for prayer."
suck the life out of the party
(R)ahmocrats
...country who really, really suck. And many of them are Democrats.
The POS States of America.
So, can't the
StupidStupak amendment get culled out in conference committee?Thank the dear and fluffy Lord that at least both of my reps voted nay. I'm very disappointed it passed, but at least it wasn't NH's fault.
Porter for months. I'd like to think she heard me.
its just poor women, what's all the fuss? They came in handy for Clinton in 95.
I'm so glad that I'm useful for something but frankly, I'm finding harder and harder to pull myself up by my boot straps and crawl out of the roadway each time.
And you guys really went to sleep before you could post something about the House of Representatives actually passing a health care bill?? It was a big night, and I'm having a drink.
I'm surprised to read that Dave Obey voted for the abortion amendment but I'm assuming he counted votes and realized the bill wouldn't pass without it. [Fair disclaimer: I'm not sure how many of the 39 Democrats voted against the bill because of the amendment]. It passed by two Democrats and one Republican.
We can revisit abortion later. The goal now is to pass a bill out of conference. You can't hold your breath and wait for most of 250 million people to agree with you. Let's get this passed and fix it later.
Having a drink.
I know I am in the minority here, and I will be blasted as one of "Them" (whoever they are), but I do not know if I want my tax money going to someone who chooses to get an abortion. Let's not be too crazy about this -- you do know that some organization will step up and provide low cost abortions. From Planned Parenthood's own website:
"Nationwide, the cost at health centers ranges from about $350 to $900 for abortion in the first trimester. The cost is usually more for a second-trimester abortion. Costs vary depending on how long you've been pregnant and where you go. Hospitals generally cost more."
Yes, I know that even $350 might be a stretch for some people -- and those are the people who most likely cannot afford to raise a child. These are also the same people, however, who don't have any health care as of now anyway. While this does suck for pro-choice folks, recognize that this does not eliminate the choice.
I know I'll get lambasted here -- again -- but abortion outside of health reasons is a choice (hence Pro Choice). It sucks to be pregnant and poor, but the act of Screwing is also a choice. Insurance will pay for Rape, Incest and Health of the Mother issues, which goes outside of Choice and into Necessity.
I was at first surprised that the Dems voted for this, but I believe this will not have the incredible effect everyone might think it will. If it gets people to think twice about having unprotected sex while keeping abortion legal, that isn't a bad thing, is it?
It will not pay for health of the mother, only in cases where her life is in danger.
As for rape and incest, what difference is that to the fetus? Why make these arbitrary exceptions? Because of humanitarian reasons? Then why shouldn't humanitarian reasons guide all decisions about abortion?
Finally, abortion is a medical procedure, and still legal, at least de jure, unlike the Iraq war, which was never legal under any legal system, and has killed thousands of children with your tax money.
Of course you have the right to your own views without being trashed for them. But until we can pick and choose where our tax money goes, this argument needs to be thrown on the trash heap. we are all murderers.
Yes, it's terribly realistic to think that people will quit having sex because they're poor. Teenagers won't have sex, either, if you tell them it's not allowed.
The problem with the Stupak's amendment isn't that it prohibits federal money from paying for abortion. Newsflash - that's already the law. Federal money can't be used for abortion now, even for women receiving their health care through public plans such as Medicaid.
The problem is that the amendment prohibits federal money from going to organizations that provide abortions, and will prohibit health insurance plans that are eligible for the federal subsidy from providing coverage for abortion. So if my employer enrolls in plan A, and plan A also is available for people receiving the subsidy, the plan cannot cover abortion, even though there are people with that care plan that AREN'T paying with 'taxpayer money.'
Here's but a few of the nastier health problems pregnancy can cause or exacerbate:
Auto-immune disorders (see microchimerism and scleroderma, lupus)
Bacterial Vaginosis
Cholestasis
Death
Depression
Infection
Incontinence
Ectopic Pregnancy
Fistula
Gestational Diabetes
HELLP Syndrome
Immune deficiency
Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Miscarriage
Molar Pregnancy
Placenta Accreta
Placenta Previa
Preeclampsia
Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
Ruptured Uterus
Urinary Tract Infection
Silly women and their "health care" needs.
I understand the immportance of healthcare reform, however with so much emphasis being placed on this particular national nightmare, not enough notic is being paid to one that's even more immportant; the new legislation being bandied about to "fix" wall street and the to big to fail banks. Quite frankly if something isn't done about these issues the healthcare debate will be a moot point as the gov. won't have any money to do anything.
Kick everyone out of the House and Congress. They're all owned by the banks, the "health" insurance cartels and big pharma.
And if you really believe that I got some prime beach front property to sell you located in the middle of the Gobi desert.
