Shepard Smith needs to find a new network to work for since he clearly didn't tow the line with how ClusteFox usually does business in this interview with Michael Steele. I keep wondering when one too many times of doing this sort of thing is going to cost him his job. I didn't catch this when it first aired but I can only take Fox in small doses before wanting to break my TV screen. Thankfully the folks at Media Matters have a stomach for this stuff that I don't.

Smith points out that Boehner called passing the health care bill armageddon for the Democrats and that another Congressman called it a "baby killer". Steele tries to claim that the rhetoric is not a reflection of what the GOP leadership is saying, but just what "average folks out there are saying" about the bill that they're reflecting. When Smith called him out for it Steele attacks Smith personally and says he's toting the "Democrat" talking point.

It's really pitiful that the GOP and their leadership continue to drum up the hatred while refusing to take any responsibility for it. Given the fact that Smith is actually willing to challenge any of these guys when they're spouting their party line B.S. on his show, I'd gladly welcome him to the MSNBC line up to replace Scar in the Morning if MSNBC ever decides that horrid show's ratings are low enough to get rid of it.

An ignorant shameless self hating minstrel whose life has no meaning beyond serving these bigoted violent people who also despise him.

Micheal Steele is half caste...his racist white masters hate him, and we black folk denounce him.

In the black community, assholes like Steele are hated far more than the most repulsive racist.

Does Mr Steele think that the 'majority' of these 'tea baggers' don't notice the color of HIS skin?
His face is on the 'practice targets' of these morons, right next to the President's and above Nancy Pelosi's.
Mr Steele doesn't have the 'cajones' to walk down the middle of the rally the way the Dems did.
Coward!

Actually, what the average 'American' folk are saying is that Mr. Steele just got ranned over by a damned ole train. What the average 'white Republican racist' folk are saying is what's fed to them by their puppet masters.

He got tough questions on the CBS morning show Monday, and they almost cut him off because he was on such a wingnut rant.

So Shep thinks the GOP rhetoric is over the top but he makes no mention or connection to his fellow Fox employees who have been egging on everyone from the tea baggers to the Republican leadership. As David Frum just said the other day Fox News works for the Republican Party

Shep's playing a character. He's a "token" liberal used to justify the rest of the trash, like Colmes. As the rhetoric got worse, they hired a slightly more excitable Colmes-version. The question is whether he actually believes what he's saying. It's possible, but it's impossible to tell whether he's ever veering off-script. I'm not buying it.

Scottie's picture

something about Smith, he has very little to do with the Fox Nutbaggery from Beck, etc.

When you have people with the likes of Beck spewing his bile out there, and starting to make Bill O'reilly look like the more level-headed one, then you know you've caught the bus to Crazy-town, people.

Anais's picture

The only things I've heard coming from Shep Smith have been reasonable statements. The only times he's been quoted and video'd here or on other progressive sites are times when he's been rational in the face of insanity, quoted actual facts and even held right wingers' feet to the fire. I can't believe he's still on Fox, but maybe someone thinks having one journalist on an outlet makes it a "news" network.

Shadowgm's picture

Steele is not only fine with 'baby-killer' being yelled on the floor of the House, but apparently all jiggy wit da shouts of ******.

It ain't gonna be fleas you get from hanging out with these particular mad-dogs, Mr. Steele. It'll be much worse. Race hatred, religious fanatacism ... I suspect you're just hanging on to this bronco because you know you're gonna get trampled when it throws your ass into the dirt.

And Mr. Rodeo Clown Beck ain't gonna be deflecting nothing.

were right!

Steele is in so damned much over his head. He gets all pissy when he runs out of excuses, which are two or three. I don't care what the people out there are saying, those in the senate have a responsibility to be civil and also to try to act like adults. Steele has a responsibility to try to tamp down the anger before someone gets hurt. He should rein in the crap the people out there are saying as well, instead of making excuses for it. Of course if people like the tea party leaders would shut the fu*k up, that would help too.

I thought Shep was going to lose his job after Nader called Obama an Uncle Tom immediately after the elections and Shep looked and sounded like he was going to kick his ass for saying it.

as in the photo posted. Reminiscent of early hominins. Mind you, back in the 60's I worked for a smart guy who looked like a Neanderthal and drove a Nash Metropolitan, FWIW. Jest saying that we are not alone.

I'm sure you mean well, but phrenology isn't exactly the least loaded subject when you're talking about blacks and character. Like Ann Coulter and her adams' apple, that's a dumb argument to use against the Conservatrolls when there's so much material to work with by what they DO, not what they look like.

...the ridiculous NON-answer to the question: Let me answer that by asking you THIS.

Give me a break will ya...Now suddenly the Senator from Texas didn't say "It's a babykiller" or whatever version of the statement you care to believe oozed out of this reptile's mouth. NOW, it's the PEOPLE. So are we to believe that the senator is a wooden dummy and "citizen joe" was throwing his voice and making it look like the dummy was speaking? What the heck kind of response is that?

Just once, I'd like to hear a commentator say: I'm going to keep asking you the same question until you answer it. If we have to be on air for an hour as I repeat the same question over and over, then we'll be here an hour. But I'd like for you to either answer the question or refuse to answer it and tell me to move on.

Michael Steele is what the republic party deserves, a public face who couldn't ratiocinate his way out of a wet paper bag. He's that stump stupid.

He should thank his lucky stars that our dear, departed Steve Gilliard is not here to shred his asshole seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year.

Nonsense. It's Double-Triple-Uber-Apocalyptic-Armageddon (squared).

When the Republicans are finished words like hyperbole will have no meaning left.

I often wonder why Fox keeps Shep around. If anyone on that network ever calls out Republicans it's him although I have to admit I only watch clips of Fox but he's the only guy who seems to go against Fox's grain.

I wouldn't trust the night janitor who mops the floors at Fox.

That was no interview, Smith just kissed Michael Steele's *ss all over the TV while giving Steele the opportunity to spew his false talking points.

Here's the 'frame job' Lie we will hear from every Wingnut from here to eternity,

Wrong again Steele, the average person likes the bill, only Republican/Conservative extremists hate the bill.

CnLfan's picture

Shep Smith has way too much integrity for Fox News. I gather it ends where he deposits his paycheck, but still...

bonsai pajamas's picture

Who knows, perhaps Shep is really a man of conscience. Maybe he has enough depth to reckon how the things Fox does have longterm ramifications. Do the ghosts of Iraqi children murdered during the Iraq invasion haunt him? Or maybe Shep's just smart enough to know that when the house of cards comes tumbling down the "talent" at Fox will be lucky to land jobs doing infomercials. He's a pretty young guy, that might matter to him. Either way, he should quit Fox now and write a book. An expose of the House of Murdoch -- if Bram Stoker were living, he'd be the better choice to write it, but Shep'll do.

GambitLB's picture

Replacing Scar with Shep? That sure gets my vote! I don't have any illusions about Shep being some kind of ultra-liberal, but he is infinitely more watchable than the always full-of-himself Joe Scarborough. Watching the other day as poor Christopher Hayes, time and again, tried to complete an answer before getting cut off by Scar was just painful.

You write:

Where was he going to tow it? I think the phrase you are looking for is "toe the line" as in footraces.

"Given the fact that Smith is actually willing to challenge any of these guys when they're spouting their party line B.S. on his show..."

It is only because Steele is very easy to dislike. Be careful of Shep Smith. He is a wolf in sheep's clothes. Most of the time he is toeing the Fox line.

The expression is: "toe the line."

Smith was by far the best and most objective reporter during the days in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. If he worked back in the day when there was actually news reporting on television rather than nearly 100% commentary he probably would have been a very good one.

decided against denouncing the hate speech coming from the right, he is adding to it.

It reads on the RNC home page that Nancy Pelosi should be fired and their burning background gets all crazy hot passionate for their visitors.

But Steele went a bit further when he said something to the effect of "Pelosi should get ready for the firing line in November."

Get that? He is calling for Nancy Pelosi to meet death by firing squad. That is what a firing line is.

He has called for the assassination of a sitting member of Congress.

Nobody has called him on it.
