Scarborough Uses Bayh Interview to Bash the Left
Scarborough uses this interview with Evan Bayh to attack bloggers on the left for being too mean to his buddy Evan Bayh and play more of this can't we all get along game Bayh's been singing since he announced his retirement.
Bob Cesca hit the nail on the head with this "half a loaf" nonsense out of Bayh today:
Bayh is really pathetic. While chickening out because being in Congress is so hard and people argue about important issues, he scolded the left by suggesting, "Some progress is better than none." And, "Half a loaf is better than none."
Well, first, I would argue that half a loaf is better than none, only if the goal is to always shoot for for the full loaf (damn I hate the "loaf" metaphor, by the way). Bayh, on the other hand, routinely aims for just the half a loaf.
Exactly. He's done nothing but undermine the agenda of the Democratic Party. "Half a loaf" for progressive Democrats who want some actual reform is the public option, since single payer would be the whole loaf. And of course in the clip above when Katrina Vanden Heuvel tries to ask Evan Bayh about the real problem with the Senate which is the filibuster and the money influencing its members, Joe and Mike make sure the segment ends before she can do any follow up. Scarborough needs to just move on over to ClusterFox where he belongs.

........than none.
For the rest of us, that half a loaf ran out long ago. We voted for them, but the Dems continue to starve us. I for one, will not be voting for them again if big change does not come to the party of spineless cowards very soon.
before it goes down, like all who are retiring now. That way he can't get the brunt of blame when this economy tanks hard in the next few years. It's pretty obvious really.
Goodnight, Frau Blücher
since his wife makes $2.1Mil at Wellpoint, he can retire comfortably with the family covered for life by a plan that you and I will never get, because that would be socialist.

Bayh masked his craven capitulation to corporate lobbyists with a veneer of bipartisanship and moderation. If he sold out to enough special interests, he could claim that he was on both sides.

"Half a loaf" is nonsense.
Or should we say that LD50 is better than non-lethal? (LD50 is the technical term where a given amount of a substance will kill - lethal dose - 50% of the people exposed.)
I was sick of Bayh before being sick of Bayh was cool. He's just a weasel whiner. The only question now is when is he going to drop the other weasel shoe and tell us what is next on his agenda.
Joe Scarborough would become mute if he couldn't talk about what he did way back when he was in congress. According to Joe he is an expert on all subjects political. I am beginning to believe one must take ego enhancement drugs to be a teevee host and Joe along with Chris Matthews od-ed.
This morning he had Pat Buchanan on again. My question is why? How is anything Pat says relevant to what is happening in the world today. Okay, maybe he was the original tea bagger but who cares?
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Where Slow said we need to cut entitlements and defense spending.
He only said defense spending once. But He went on a tirade about entitlement spending cuts.
Freeze Defense spending for 1 year. All entitlement issues are fixed.
Just for one year.
I can hear the howling already.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
While I agree we spend way to much on defence. The worst part of that equation is, most of the money goes into corporate coffers and not into the training and materiel the active duty and reservists need. And that's who'll get screwed not the corporations.
How about a spending freeze on all non essential spending.
Like R&D.(DS)
It seems to me, that since we subsidize the R&D anyway, it should be frozen. Let the Corporations foot the bill. They can submit their own projects for evaluation.
Yes, we need to keep giving our military upgraded vehicles that can protect them . That being said, if we weren't in Iraq we wouldn't be spending so much. We know who to thank for that. The same can be said for Afghanistan.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
wow I usually get my ass kicked for disagreeing here.
Yes, it is those in the military not the contracting corporations that will be hurt, but ...
If we completely cut all defense spending, not freeze it, that's no military at all, we'd barely have enough to pay the existing interest on current debt (that's debt, not deficit). And cutting all military spending is as feasible as the poorly thought out Republican entitlement elimination plan. The least painful option is severe cost controls on all of it, entitlement and military. Entitlement has the same issues with measurable spending going to entities profits not benefits and no cost controls.
And even with cuts or at least severe cost controls to multiple programs, we are going to need taxes if we intend to pay down any of the debt in the long term (post recovery). China seems to have shifted to the position that long term, we will default. Politicians in a constant donation/election mode won't put cost controls in programs or raise taxes.
"My question is why?"
Simple, because people watch the show then those who don't watch will talk about it on the internet.
The more insane or outrageous the character the more coverage the M$M gets.

Bayh: Doing stuff's hard. You don't get what you want immediately, and sometimes you have to talk to people who may not agree with you. I don't want to do it.
Scarborough: I know, I had that same problem when I was in Congress! Talking about doing stuff, in a controlled environment where nobody can shut you up, though, that's really fun! You should try it.
Bayh: But won't somebody look at my credentials and realize I have no credibility to make any statements on policymaking?
Scarborough: Evan, it's the mainstream media! Credentials and credibility were buried with Cronkite!
Bayh: Great, any chance I can shameless peddle for some company that I may have a vested financial interest in?
Scarborough: But of course! Garcon, more Starbucks!
When will Bayh, Scar, or any of their buddies discuss any giving in or "bi-partisanship" of the right since Shrub left?
Bayh saw how well quitting works for Sarah.
So he quit.
Quitters never prosper - unless they are on Faux or become lobbyists.

Do intern killers like Joe go to MSNBC? Did MSNBC do a background check on Scarborough to find out if he has any dead interns in his closet?
Poor Lori Klausutis didn't have a chance. She worked for sadistic Joe, and now she's dead as a doornail. If Georgie and his crew hadn't been in office, Joey Boy would be in prison right now. Instead, he's doing his women-hating gig on MSNBC every day. Can't stand the guy or the show!
Bayh was one of the ones poking a stick in the spokes and now he's crying because the bicycle wouldn't roll.

Dems need to start acting like PIGS!!
Oh, Evan Bayh the republican. Ok, I remember him now.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Half a loaf only works when you are actually talking about bread. The senate does not bake bread.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Basically requires one knows what they are doing.
5 measures of flour to 3 of liquid (by weight, so 20 oz flour to 12 oz water) plus 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast, a tablespoon of sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add yeast and sugar to warm (not hot) water, add salt to flour, combine until dough forms and knead until dough is smooth and elastic.
Cover dough with a tea towel and leave to proof/rise for about an hour in a dry, draft-free spot. Test the proof by pushing a finger into the dough - if it springs back, leave it to proof longer.
Punch the dough flat, but don't go all Mike Tyson on it. Shape the dough into a boule (round), baguette, or place in a loaf pan, and let it rise a second time for about an hour.
Bake at 450 degrees for ten minutes, then lower heat to 375 and bake for about an hour. When the bread is done, it will sound hollow if you rap on it.
"it will sound hollow if you rap on it."
But I dunno how to rap? I also don't hip-hop or double dutch so I am just out of luck.

What if the bread hollers when you rap on it?

... your loaf came out Republican. Throw it out.
Toss the whole loaf or only half the loaf? Wait, this is a pretend loaf of bread so I don't have to worry about it.

I thought bloggers were irrelevant?
They are until some politician needs an excuse for doing something lame.

Bayh was just one more Dem. obstructionist that Reslugs loved. Good Riddance to the ignorant asshole.
Wish we could say the same to the Intern Murderer!
If I don't quit and end up voting for a democratic bill, My family and I could end up like the Wellstone family.
ever solved a SERIOUS problem?
Sometimes some progress is better than none, but there are times when you just have to go all or nothing. It's worked with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
I really hope the Democrats come up with a better choice than Bayh to replace him though because in the past few years, I've been sorry I voted for him.
Bay just up and walked out on all those Congressional benefits? Then it can't be illness, 'cause he needs the insurance.
That leaves blackmail or an incipient scandal, bimbo or bimboy.
Maybe Bayh has a dead intern problem like Joe did (does?). That dead intern smell never goes away.
Maybe Bush is protecting Bayh too? Or maybe it's Obama?
Take half of a turd and you still have a turd.
These asshats can't take heat from us "liberal bloggers"? Don't make me laugh. The reason decent bills can't get passed are a direct result of people like HIM who care more about money and personal gain than the Democratic Party platform.
These conservatives do not believe in the core values of the Democratic Party, let alone what us all-powerful bloggers believe.
At least Van den Heuvel got to the meat of the issue, and pointed out Congress' lack of action is due to campaign contributions, which Bayh is no doubt an expert on.
One unrelated point, it does my health no good whatsoever to see Grover Norquist so early in the morning. I can't stand that fuckwad.
I know, that took me by surprise this morning too. They should have made a special warning about his appearance so that we could find the remote rapidly.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
joe "the independent" bashes the left or progressives any and every chance he gets.
The pig is a dye in the wool right winger. He likes to call himself anything but, as all the cowards do these days, but he is just another right wing pig with a tv audience.
I really don't care what foul murderers like you think, 'kay?
I'm no Dem, but I am confused on how finishing your term (but not looking for re-election) is 'chicken'.......(?)
And I'd assume that QUITTING during your term (cough cough PALIN.....) is somehow valiant
Just remember, MSNBC is the "librul leftist" station........
While Bayh may not be quitting cold like Palin, he is quitting de facto. By announcing he will not seek re-election, Bayh puts the DNC in a bind. Plus, he is signaling that his participation through the rest of his term will be compromised. In other words, he will have no compulsion to support the party agenda, platform or programs.
Throw in his apparent lack of support of a democratic candidate for his seat (e.g. not transferring campaign funds), and it is very clear that he is not just "finishing his term" but quitting the Democratic Party out right.
after 9 AM!!!
When is Joe's dead intern problem going to be an issue?
If it has not been a problem yet, it never will be.
Maybe if every guest starts asking about it on the air - har de har.
Part of the problem with Skankborough, et. al. is that the air time is irresistible to guests. This makes it very rare for a powerful, legitimate guest to actually challenge the host talking points and agenda.
This is true on every show, including the so called venerable Meet the Press. If guests get too aggressive, then they never come back. and not just to one show, but to any. This is why the guests are dominated by phony frontman shills like McCaffery, et. al.
Here a "news" bone Eloi, now go back to watching Stupor Bowl or Olympics or Lost and the non-stop ads for boner pills, fat pills and beers are. We will sound the siren when we need more chattel enlistees to "keep us safe".
exactly right - Bayh and other barely democrats should stop with the flim flam posing, just like Scarborough. Except the pretense of reasonable and balanced or "bi-partisanship" can be very useful as a shield.
If Skankborough moved over to ClusterFox where he really does belong, then what would his angle be? Back row of the choir. Meanwhile, staying on MSNBGE, he can feign impartiality while wielding the mike switch and direct discussion to up the right points, sub roza.
Bayh and Nelson, et. al. are 5th columnists that put corporate rights over citizens rights. Now he is also a quitter because there is a growing cadre of real People's representatives challenging his feather bed. "Not doing the people's work"
Half-a-loaf this, Bayh.
I never listen to scarborough about anything. Hell the man is a mental midget. No offense to little people. Wasn't it Micas father that called him shallow?
But if you stop to think about it he is no more shallow then every other GOP idiot.
They have given up on thinking, honesty, and integrity, in favor of think tanks and word manipulators like luntz to tell them what to say and when to say it. The biggest mistake they made was they targeted the 25% that were to dumb or to busy to take the time to find out what they were really doing. Now all the greed, the lies, are coming back at them with a vengence. A few that decided to take the time to find out what they were doing have changed, the believers continue to believe, while the bankers, insurance companies, and our bribed members of the congress and senate continue to decieve.
Part of the 25% are so scared they don't know what to do. the bankers and the corporations control the government and the people are screwed.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
a centrist
i see republicans, who only vote with their own
the blue dogs, who claim the throne of moderate and yet are very partisan in trying to prove they are not liberal
and liberals
I think this Bayh quitting story misses the point. I think he quit solely because Republicans aren't working with him. that was why he and Blanche lincoln cried to Obama at their televised meeting to push back against lefty dems. The fact is that lefty dems and centrist president do work with him, it's his republican friends that are leaving him and other centrists behind and when that happens centrists are useless politicians
after reading that post, I disagree.
you don't think.

common sense matters as much as truth
I base this opinion on a couple items.
1) Reid and Obama made many concessions to "centrist democrats", the proff is the watered down bill we ended up with.
2) An earlier post detailing a Matthews/Todd back and forth had Todd admit that Byah's reason for quitting has more to do with centrists not having a place in the senate anymore than left activists forcing his decision. My ttranslation: Centrists are powerless when the Republicans "just say no" to everything, even what centrists try to propose.
"Chickening out" is a term considered highly derogatory by Poultry-Americans. What Bayh did should be more appropriately described as "Palining out".

This constipated douchebag can probably only squeeze out half a loaf.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
I think he quit to position himself as VP candidate on the Palin ticket in twenty-oh-twelve. He says he can help the American people more by quitting, which sounds like one of her attempted justifications.
Hmmm.... That's an interesting choice of word to use regarding an angry ex-politician who had a young female staffer found dead in his office one morning with a cracked skull.
