Saturday Night Live: The Rock Obama
By Heather Wednesday Mar 11, 2009 4:00am
SNL spoofs The Hulk and Rahm Emanuel with their parody "The Rock Obama". Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson actually does a pretty good job here as an impulsive Obama. I already knew he had a knack for comedy after his performance in Be Cool. Maybe Be Cool is not everyone's cup of tea but I thought the movie was very funny and Johnson's performance contributed greatly to why I enjoyed it.
I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't already watched the clip but a very short synopsis is in order. The Rock Obama is not as nice to Tom Coburn, Kay Bailey Hutchinson and John McCain as the real life Obama would be, much to Rahm Emanuel's disappointment.
I'll leave any more spoilers than that to the comments section.

Funny.
"Can you smell what Baracks been cookin'?"....funny, but they blew it IMO
who thought Be Cool was funny instantly has credibility issues.
I agree with you Heather, I liked Be Cool and thought the Rock was pretty funny. Moving from wrasslin to film isn't much different than moving from stage work I suppose.
I live so far under my rock that I never even heard of the movie Be Cool. But I did see this clip and thought it was pretty funny. Nice to begin the day with humor. Thanks, Heather!
Emanuel scares the Republicans because in him they see their reflection.
it was fun.
I too wanted to hear "Can you smelllllllll what Barack is cooking?!"
It would have been nice for The Rock Obama to give all three senator's "The People's Elbow" but that indeed is a communist wrasslin' move. (Oh my god, I am a 31 year old married woman and I know wrasslin' moves!)
Its a fun way to tell Obama to spend his 'political capital'....
Its the time for Big ideas and to tell the naysayers and the ones responsible for our current crises to get out of the way
Why all the free plugs for a mediocre show?
Didn't The Rock feature at the 2000 RNC?
A Saturday Night Live sketch was actually funny. This has to be a first for the show. Dwayne Johnson pulled it off well.
a new ad (for what I don't know) stages a Lincoln - Douglas debate in which Lincoln is asked if he would like to respond to Douglas. His response is to rip his shirt off, throw people off the stage, and hit one of them with a chair. During the commotion and crowd cheering some text appears at the bottom of the screen advising viewers that Lincoln's favorite sport was wrestling.
Must see advertising!
It was for Diet Mountain Dew.
Just as an off-topic sidenote, it's not the first time that actor played Lincoln. The sleep medicine where the guys dreams tell him they miss him...he's the Lincoln (Hellooo Honest Abe?)
It would have been more like "The Rock" if he'd done his 90's era rasslin' schtik, which was to be forever threatening to stick something "up someone's ass."
The concept of Obama loosing his cool and turning into the hulk is great but this skit wasn't funny at all. I was hoping for something like Obama screaming at McCain about how he flip flopped on so many issues, acted like a punk in bringing up the helicopter thing, something topical. But that would require writers who had a clue. And the rock, well he lives up to his name, he shows about the same range of emotion.
Thank you SNL for finally saying what I believe most progressives are feeling! You know I understand and fully respect Obama's approach (civil, reaching across the isle, patient yet gets things done) but when you have such an obstructionist opposition that believes in letting this nation fail in order to give creedence to their faulty ideology that failed us for the last 2 decades, you just want to throw them out of the window and not deal with their nonsense.
oh and I just saw watchmen last night. so amazing. Ozymandias is a great metaphor for what the current GOP is.
And I thought The Rock did very well in his mimicking of Obama's vocal stylings!! Impressive.
Right after his 2004 speech, I was going 'Can you SMEEEEEEELLLLL what BARACK is cookin' and everybody thought i was an idiot but dammit...I CALLED IT. *grumble*
anyway, dwayne johnson (im going to respect his wishes to slowly but surely slide away from his 'the rock' persona...anybody remember dwayne 'TR' johnson?) was entertaining as hell when he was a pro wrestler (and a 3rd generation pro wrestler at that). this is a guy who exemplifies the american dream...never part of a particularly rich family, he worked hard as hell. as far as his money, fame, and reputation...he's earned every ounce of everything he has.
so to guys like him, a guy who's career got kicked off in an industry where people risk severe damage for the sole purpose of entertaining us, i say congratulations and continued success.
btw, i remember he was a presenter on an awards show and the other guy was making the presentation while DJ slowly slid unconfortably close to him. when the guy said 'what are you doing?' DR looked right at him and in a sultry voice said 'can you smell what the rock is cookin?' ive never laughed so hard watching an awards show in my life.
I was hoping that after McCain uh left that they would then bring in Limbaugh and Hannety. That would have been perfect.
unfortunately I don't think there's anyone fat enough to play Rush. Next skit: The Rock Obama breaks into Fox News Studios and proceeds to give all 3 Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck the People's Elbow.
is awesome. Again. The guy who played Rahm (Andy?) was hilarious too. I laughed and applauded at the AIG part :-)
Oh yes, pro wrestling was much more fun in the 90's. It sucks now without The Rock.
I think that Saturday night my appreciation for Rock has double. He can mock himself for being tough dancing and singing, and did a hell of a job as the incredible hulk version of Barack. This is one strong dude that can act as well. I bet bigger things are in his future.
