Romney: We Need to Put the Brakes on the Stimulus Plan
Mitt Romney is asked what he thinks the Obama administration needs to do to stimulate the economy and surprise, surprise...he recommends more tax cuts. How'd those tax cuts work out under George W. Bush Mitt? Of course Romney also thinks we need to get rid of the stimulus plan which wasn't big enough in the first place. Let the private sector take care of everything. It will all work out just fine.
I'll take Paul Krugman's advice over Romney's any day--The Jobs Imperative:
So it’s time for an emergency jobs program.
How is a jobs program different from a second stimulus? It’s a matter of priorities. The 2009 Obama stimulus bill was focused on restoring economic growth. It was, in effect, based on the belief that if you build G.D.P., the jobs will come. That strategy might have worked if the stimulus had been big enough — but it wasn’t. And as a matter of political reality, it’s hard to see how the administration could pass a second stimulus big enough to make up for the original shortfall.
So our best hope now is for a somewhat cheaper program that generates more jobs for the buck. Such a program should shy away from measures, like general tax cuts, that at best lead only indirectly to job creation, with many possible disconnects along the way. Instead, it should consist of measures that more or less directly save or add jobs.

KING: What should the president do in the short term? A lot of Republicans have said we're in this deficit, we can't run up more deficits. What should he do in the short term to create jobs?
ROMNEY: Well, put the brakes on the stimulus plan. Stop spending money on government, and instead create incentives for businesses to buy things and to hire people, by, for instance, having a more robust investment tax credit, by letting businesses expense capital expenditures in the first year for the next year or two, by lowering the payroll tax. At the same time, stop all the talk about cap-and- trade. That holds back job growth.
And of course, this plan to take over the health care system means that about one-fifth of the economy has put its brakes on and is not willing to invest because they're so concerned.
Look, the president has to recognize that the only way we're going to get this economy going again is by encouraging the private sector rather than continuing to grow government. Massive deficits and growth of government is not the answer.
KING: Let's look at some of the proposals he will lay out on Tuesday. It sounds like you'd agree with some of them. I'm guessing you don't think they go far enough, but here is what we are told the president will do at his job summit ideas. A cash for caulkers, they're now calling it, people weatherize their home. You give them some incentives. The idea is you get more energy-efficient homes, and you also hire people to come in and put in the new windows and take the other steps.
Tax credits for businesses who hire new workers -- payroll tax holiday. Access to TARP -- that's the bailout funds -- for small banks, and an extension of unemployment benefits.
Is that a good down payment, a good plan, in your view?
ROMNEY: A number of those things reflect a good start. But they're not going to get the economy going again alone. You're going to have to have something far more substantial than that. And by the way, TARP has served its purpose. TARP ought to be ended. We've got hundreds of billions of dollars there that is being used as a slush fund by Secretary Geithner and the Obama administration. Stop the TARP recklessness at this point and get ourselves back to creating jobs by encouraging businesses to grow, expand their capital expenditures and hire.
And by the way, when you give people special incentives just to hire new employees; of course you give them an incentive to let current employees go.
The best thing to do is to lower the payroll tax and to give businesses tax credits for making investment.

Of course we should, Shitt, it's starting to work. That's bad for the GOP. Of course we know the GOP puts itself ahead of everything else, including the country.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
We don't need a stimulus to create jobs, we need a "jobs program" to create jobs???
What does he think a Stimulus is?

Brad DeLong is an economist whose associations and affiliations make for a very complicated mix.
Attempting to dissect ideological derivations can become a full time undertaking.
I read many of these types regularly despite the fact, or may be even because they have their sights trained on the actions and the interests of the wealthy capitalists.
Being wealthy is a prerequisite to being a capitalist of note, it is not a prerequisite of taking note of the capitalists.
Recently the 3rd quarter productivity numbers came in at an astonishing +9.5%. What this means is that workers who still have their jobs are working much harder, producing more for even less pay.
DeLong said this:
Whatever else I will find to say about DeLong, such an admission takes a big man.
The Oligarchs like their recessions, they are most useful to push the working class back into the mud.
Previous comment on class here
Previous comment on the important work of UCLA historian Robert Brenner here
Essentially, Brenner is reviving in full, the Marxian position that the rate of profit will in time fall. For Brenner it is a central component of what he calls the long downturn which has occurred steadily since 1973.
Being a historian he is not big on making predictions, but based on what he is saying we are in for a long continuing downward trend.
The only fault I can find thus far in his compelling treatise is the omission of the component of energy. It is an enormous omission but I will keep studying to see if I have somehow missed it.
The decline from 1973 is coincidental to our energy decline.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
For shining a light on a person who could use some attention. I read Brad's blog daily, because I enjoy his take on the economy and on the 'community' of economists. Professor Delong seems to me a man of very high ethical standards, who has more than once admitted that he has been, or at least might be, wrong.
Honesty is a hard thing to come by these days.
1) Increase the minimum wage incrementally to $20/hr over the next five years and
2) decrease the number of working hours to 32hrs (4x8) and
3) set overtime rate to twice * regular rate and
4) everybody qualifies for overtime except officers (VP,CEO) of companies, no more exemptions.
Instead of complaining about the stimulus maybe you should return to Massachusettes and fix the health care problems that you created......better yet just go Mitt yourself.

Sure Mitt. As Heather said, "How did that Bush tax cut work out?" You assholes destroyed the economy of the whole fucking world and I am suppose to take your advice about the economy. Good luck with that 2012 presidential campaign there Mitt. Even the Republicans can't stand you, you hopeless SOB. Go run your company and get off of my airwaves, Dick and give your dog to somebody who will take care of him.
..in the military!
Mickey: "It was an epiphany. Do you know what an epipany is?"
Keoni: "NOT NOW MICKEY!"
Oh I forgot, they're the republicans.
More tax cuts - more of what we've had for the last 8 years. And how many jobs did 8 years of tax cuts create, Mitt?
And isn't that what the economy needs - more production? Mitt obviously missed out on the thousands of cars piling up at the docks, or the real estate ghost towns in California.
When Demand has collapsed because of 30 years of pro-rich Reaganomics, we need more... Supply!
I hope everyone understand that and the Republicans will wonder the wilderness for another 40 years.
And Jonathan King never called him on it.
Jonathan King never called him on it because Jonathan King is a Mike Wallace's son want to be.
Tax cuts? Really? Even reality can't stop these people. We already did that! It failed! Calling conscious awareness, is there any over there in wingnut land? This is the best you can do? Our leaders are a sad lot.
that a GOP operative would toe the company line and dismiss any and things opposition.
The solution - any and all things corporate.
Stop government programs - the corporate shills can do it better on their own.
Stop new bills on carbon emissions - it will take profit from the bottom line and the corporate shills can do it better on their own.
Stop payroll taxes on businesses - we don't really need any money coming in for government programs - after all, the corporate shills can do it better on their own.
Any and all for the corporate shills. Just frickin' shocking.
...something starts to work, and we need to stop it.
Something fails and we need to do more of it.

common sense matters as much as truth
I wonder why anybody with half a mind would listen to these people like Mitt and any other Republican. They spew this lower tax crap over and over again but it doesn't work. Even Reagan raised taxes. Even Daddy Bush raised taxes after he realized that deficit spending was digging deeper and deeper (especially when that deficit spending was self induced because rich people were not paying their fair share).
...would be generous.
GOPers are liars. They succeed by conning the uninformed and gullible.
Frankly, as time has passed (decades), I've come to believe that we are primarily in a tug-of-war between stupid people and smart people. This is not to say there are no smart folks on the right, only that they've made the conscious decision to put aside honesty and integrity in order to serve their own interests.
So why would anybody listen to these fart breaths? The have failed at every turn. Lower taxes for the very very rich. Sure that worked well. The Medicare plan b,c,d or whatever it was. Sure give big Pharma huge kickbacks but don’t bother to pay for it and be sure to keep those tax cut for the very rich. Continue to let the big bankers and Wall Street rip off gamblers pay taxes on their multi million $$$$ incomes as capital gains instead of income and be sure to sure give big Pharma huge kickbacks but don’t bother to pay for it and be sure to keep those tax cut for the rich. Deregulate the financial sector so that they can create highly speculative financial instruments that would make the banks fail and the government that the Republicans hate will bail them out if the derivatives and credit default swaps go bad and continue to let the big bankers and Wall Street rip off gamblers pay taxes on their multi million $$$$ incomes as capital gains instead of income and be sure to sure give big Pharma huge kickbacks but don’t bother to pay for it and be sure to keep those tax cut for the rich. It is the 8 years of Republicans like the 12 days of Christmas.
Why would anybody with half a brain listen to these assholes? They ruined this country for their own financial gain. Aunt Louise is losing her house because some banker told her to refinance her already paid for house so that she can buy a new car that she does not need and remodel her kitchen that Wilma down the street did last year and Louise should do the same thing if she wants to keep up with Wilma. Now Louise cannot pay the money back and cannot enjoy her new kitchen and they took away the car 4 months ago because he social security was not enough to pay for it like the banker told her it would and her kids are out of work and losing their houses so they can’t help her like the banker told her they would.
Yeah, right. Lets do what the Republicans tell us to do. Sure that will work out just fine. They have all the
correctright answers. You ask about people with half a brain?
Sadly, a good portion of this nation has been lobotomized by these Rape-ublicans and their ilk for a very long time now.
The drooling idiots who listen to people like this clown, as well as Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity and the rest of the cowards, liars, hypocrites and shitheads that make up the republican party will just BELIEVE.
No matter what happens to them, they BELIEVE.
Remember the old Twilight Zone episode???

Mitt's backdrop (State of the Nation -art) looks like something Nazi Germany might approve. CNN and FOX are notorious for that.

despite the largest portion of obama's 'stimulus' plan were tax cuts to appease the repugs and garner their 'support' and despite these not resulting in 'jobs creation' and 'incentivizing business' to invest or add jobs (it only resulted in profitable / existing businesses cutting their tax bill and pocketing more money - which they did NOT spend on new jobs) these wankers continue to spout the discredited theory that tax cuts create jobs...
oh, and BTW Mitt: BUSH and PAULSON (REPUGS like you) created the slush fund called TARP
Uh I got news for you there is no such thing anymore.
.
The only trickle down I would like to see is when I trickle down on Mitt's face.
a thing called Trickle down now.
It's called refundable tax credits. Where people get more from the feds than they pay into it. Which is what about 20% of the so called "tax payers" now?
That's the ticket that will bring out ALL the nutcake/wack-jobs and cons that are still unashamed to show their faces in public.
When I think of "a stuffed shirt", this is the jerk-off that comes to mind. A "pretty face" and empty head with all the one liners stuffed into his memory bank.
What a jack ass. By the way, how many of his five strapping boys have joined the military yet? Thought so.
WHEN do you think repug/neocon/right wing nut balls are going to start hiring ANYONE to make this economy improve so long as President Obama and the Democratic Congress is in the control?
NOT A CHANCE!! I keep saying this, but why would they do anything to make this economy or this administration succeed?? Haven't we already heard them say they want to see it fail?
Forget the right wing nut balls. President Obama needs to take some drastic action, because he is NOT going to get their cooperation or support for anything he does....nada!!
You know, people keep wanting to resurrect the republican party, because the country needs a two party system.
However, I am very comfortable about burying the obsolete ideas that they stand for (culture wars, supply side economics, fearing the Soviet Union, etc.).
How about we have a REAL dialogue - between the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party and the rest of the Democratic party?
I am looking forward to a Progressive townhall meeting with the President.
Why not get together Amy Goodman, Thom Hartmann, Janeane Garofalo, Randi Rhodes, Sam Seder, Rachel Maddow, Denis Kucinich, Bernie Sanders, even Mike Malloy and have a real discussion about where the country should be heading?
system, everyone runs on their own stance with no party backing. What they can raise themselves is what they use to run.
No party backing means people can't vote just party line, they would have to research what the person voting for actually stands for.
Douchebag!
Until any one of your five sons steps up to fight you need to STFU
... and recently laid off some employees because sales were down, what the hell makes those repugs think that access to capital would cause me to hire some of my employees back? Get a loan, pay the interest, then lay them off again?
What is needed are customers - get it? CUSTOMERS - Those who buy my products and services.
What do we have? Banks and Credit Card companies who syphon off what little money is in circulation via service charges, late fees, overdraft fees, usury (should be) interest rates and hand that money to the wealthy by paying dividends.
Banks who recently were destitute are now making record profits? Someone please explain that.
THAT'S WHAT I CALL 'REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH'
If you need funds to pay for essentials, you have a revenue problem
If you need funds to pay for frivolity, you have a spending problem
those people would have an income to spend. Therefore they could become customers. Therefore your sales would rise if you made a wanted and affordable product.
It sounds good on paper (and not really even on paper). Small (and large) businesses hire if they need employees because they ARE BUSY: when they already have the customers.
What business thinks, for the good of the country/economy, I'm going go into debt to hire unneeded staff, and wait for customers to flood in... sometime in the future (I hope.)??
No one I know, or have worked for.
far left loon >.<
how are you?
One thing about your line of thought, how does a business start?
There is no business, therefor no customers. A business starts hoping to get customers. When they get customers is when they start turning a profit. I've never known a business that had customers before it started.
And isn't that the general thought on this website? Companies don't pay enough so there employees can't buy the product? (car manufactures etc.) So get unions in there and up the wage and then they can, and everyone does good?
I'm well thanks. and hope you are too.
Start-up costs are a huge (nail-biting) risk for small businesses. People need capital to start a business. They either save it or borrow it, but the banks (apparently) aren't lending. Once they open, their necks are on the line to pay it back and pay their staff, and many fail within 18 months.
If they can hang on and make a profit, they'll grow larger if they have the customers, not before.
I'm thinking about, say, a local bakery, They'll bake the bread for the expected customers that day. They won't hire more bakers, to make more bread unless they know it will sell.
It's a chicken and egg thing.
YES, yes, yes-- bring back the unions. A nation of employees earning minimum wage does not have much spending power.
far left loon >.<
wage.
The more $80,000 two income families we can have in the spending force, the better.
I would always prefer 100 workers at $80,000 a year than 1 worker at $8,000,000 a year.
Simple economics. More of the same $8,000,000 earned by the 80K folks will be spent in the economy.
The 8M worker will spend no where near that much on a consistent basis for daily living.
but if the guy mopping floors at the local hospital is making $20 what is the RN going to be making? And how much more is it going to cost you to lie in a bed there? Or if the kid flipping burgers makes $20 what is that going to do to the cost of said burger?
I don't care what your job is, if its over minimum wage and the minimum wage goes up, chances are what you make is going to go up. Or if your a skilled worker making currently $20 and the janitor makes $7 and there is a increase of minimum wage to $20 are you going to be happy making that same $20 when the janitor just got a 3x pay raise? Or are you going to want a 3x pay raise?
Simply raising the cost of minimum wage is going to drive up the cost of everything, and it will take that much more to buy anything. That is how it has historically worked, every time there has been an increase in minimum wage prices have went up to match.
I'm not doing too bad myself.
The hypothetical bakery, on start up they may have x amount of grocery stores willing to buy their product so they have the customers at least to start, but that can go either way, the people who buy from the stores may or may not like the bread. But lets say they do, so the bakery is running at capacity and decides to expand so they get tentative contracts from the next town over so they have to invest in more ovens and mixers and yes bakers to expand, without knowing how well there bread is actually going to sell in the next town over. Yes its a chicken and the egg thing, but which came first? The bakery or the customers? Without the customers there would be no bakery, without the bakery there would be no customers.
And on the unions I disagree, they are already here no need to bring them back, give the owners a wooden stake to drive through there heart. Except maybe jobshop type of unions ie drywall, carpenter etc.
The unions have been destroyed, which just so happens to have coincided with the destruction of the middle class. We are now back to where we were 100 years ago.
Most people don't like where we are at either.
You need to read some history and tune into planet reality. If it wasn't for union's, workers in this country wouldn't have jack shit! Do you think those psychopath's on Wall Street are going to share with the rest of us out of the goodness of their charitable hearts?
Where do people as clueless as you are come from?
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
You are a bit off regarding business and customers. Some businesses may start with no customers, but many, even the majority, start with a healthy base already established.
One key element of small business lending is customers in hand. If you show the lender proof of customers via orders for future goods delivered, you are first in line to get that loan.
Even with businesses that don't deliver product, but provide service, a well reasoned proof statement of the customer base you have available - by market and demographic studies with evidence of purchase and other things like low numbers of existing competitors, a market need that is as of now unfulfilled, really get positive attention.
So as said - many times there are customers well before the business opens, especially in manufactured goods. In some industries, it's almost the norm.
Take pipelines, a business I have just under a decade of experience in. You have developed the wonderpipe - never ages and carries petroleum with more efficiency than any other product before.
You want to sell this product to pipeline companies. You meet, they say yes, you have a customer.
Now you get to start your company to build and sell your product.
the person that developed the wonderpipe, how did they develop it? Did they go up to the petroleum companies and say "hey I want to make a wonderpipe, give me money for development and testing" or did he invest his own and quite possibly borrow money to develop and test the pipe and then find customers?
Either way there was money put into it long before there was a product to sell.
Unless of course the pipe burst forth fully formed from his forehead ala Athena.
He wants to stop the stimulus and have tax cuts instead?
Does he not know that the stimulus is already 35% tax cuts?
Does Romney want to repeal that $250,000,000,000 in tax cuts?!
That is actually one of the problems with the current stimulus. Over one third of that "government spending" isn't actually money being spent at all. Its just tax cuts (ie, its "gov't not taking" rather than "gov't spendin").
Because when you're unemployed and your income is zero, its better if you get to keep a higher percentage of that $0.
With the unemployment rate around 10%, and the broader U6 rate around 16-17%, let us imagine ourselves in those people's shoes.
You have no job. You have no income, your unemployment insurance is about to run out.
Do you want the government to lower your the tax on your nonexistent income? Or do you want the government to instead spend actual money on public works projects that could provide you with a job and an income?
Well, if you're Mitt, you'd prefer the former.
...lowering taxes, it's not your taxes they're talking about.
Yes, if only billionaires could only get the capital gains tax down a percentage point, then they'd instantly create jobs for the millions of Americans without jobs.
to send his 5 sons to afghanistan.

I'm surprised he's not trying to queer medical health reform in the name of a healthy economy.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
What does this draft dodging son of a bitch know about creating jobs? He was a fucking arbitrageur for fucks sake. He spent his career putting people out of work. Ever hear of AMPAD there, Willard, you asshole? Close to four hundred workers in Indiana and New York remember you. And all of the stockholders who lost everything remember you, too. You bastard.
Mitt is an arrogant SOB and has no credibility or room to talk. This nutbag said on his most recent show that, if he had to commute Maurice Clemmons' sentence today, he's do it again.
Big talk about suspending the stimulus and cutting spending from Mitt. It doesn't seem as if he knows that cutting spending in a fragile economy is the last thing the government should do. He's walking a fine line between not offending the teabaggers and trying to attract independent voters, but is not making sense from an economic POV.
Yeah, Mitt, cut spending, stop the stimulus, watch the economy collapse, and scream, "It's Obama's fault!" as loud as you and your buddies in the GOP can because this is the real reason for vomiting this nonsense on national teevee.

The gov to spend has to take money from our 'fragile economy' I agree with him cut spending and quit taking money from out economy. Yes we have to spend money on national defense but cut back on defending others, we have something like 100 bases on foreign soil cut them back, also cut back domestic spending, the government can spend money for the general welfare(within constitutional limits), doesn't mean they can provide welfare.
1,000 bases. Yes, please do cut back. Ain't gonna happen. They're needed to "protect American interests"-- aka the Economic Empire. Must... have... resources... (think oil for starters)
far left loon >.<
What planet do you live on?
The only welfare this country recognizes anymore is no-bid contracts, and tax cuts for the richest millionaires/billionaires.
That private sector bullshit your clinging too; wouldn't even exist anymore if it wasn't for the government bailing them out!
People who get government work spend nearly all of it on basic needs, which dumps money back INTO the economy at a rate of $1.61 for every dollar government spends. Do some research for chist sake before you come here spewing GOP bullshit from their parrallel universe.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
It is not generally known that this prick got a deferment from his father who was the governor of Michigan. He got a deferment as a "divinity student." What is so fucked up about that is he is a Mormon, they don't have divinity students. Then he went off to France on his "Mission" for two years. "Biding time until things were not so bad" as Jimmy Buffett said. Then he rah, rahs the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Viet Nam. The asshole. I really, really, hate guys like him.
Romney made the part of his fortune that he didn't inherit by buying and streamlining (some might say gutting) companies. He's an experienced CEO, and for him to suggest that cutting taxes in a stalled economy would be incentive enough to get CEOs like him hiring is ridiculous. American businesses are sitting on mountains of cash right now, and they're not spending it. A tax cut wouldn't do anything except make the mountains bigger. Mitt knows it, and he's lying through his teeth.
that we need to give loads of cash to rich people or else they won't want to work, but if we give even a little money to poor people they won't work.
The patrician entitlement of the half retarded offspring of the elites in this country is astounding sometimes...
Is lying MFers like romney getting on tv every night spewing bullshit all over the airways!
... and makes the GOP look bad!"
Isn't putting party before country awesome?
I'd love to hand him a helmet, a flak jacket and an M-16. Then I'd get behind him with an M-16 with a bayonet on it. "We're heading up into Helmand Province, motherfucker." Wonder how stimulating that would be for him?
too
:D
me-oww!
This man is a Morman cult member AND a Republican. I think that makes him hopeless as a public servant and representative. Anything but public office for the likes of this guy.
"Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob"
-= Franklin Delano Roosevelt =-
Whenever I hear some idiot conservative spewing their "private sector is an orgasm" public bad bullshit, I point out to them that there wouldn't even be a private sector in this country today if it wasn't for the government. They private corporations would all be gone. Wall Street would be a ghost town.
Try it sometime.
The confused look of a moron trying to compute logic is priceless.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.
Thanks again for reminding us why you'd be a terrible president.
