Given a lot of Republican's unhappiness with the current field of candidates for the GOP presidential nomination, as Karoli already pointed out, it looks like Governor "Good-Hair" Rick Perry of Texas is considering throwing his hat in the ring. During his first interview since hinting that he might be willing to run, Fox's Neil Cavuto asked Perry about his unpopularity in his home state.

As Think Progress noted, he got a rather bizarre answer out of him -- Perry: Texans Don’t Like Me Because ‘A Prophet Is…Not Loved In Their Hometown’:

In his first national TV interview since presidential rumors surfaced, Perry answered Fox News’ Neil Cavuto question about why he’s so unpopular in his home state by suggesting he’s a “prophet”:

CAVUTO: You have kind of like the Chris Christie phenomenon: very popular outside your state, still popular but not nearly as popular within your state. There are even Tea Party groups within your state who like you but don’t love you. [...] What do you say?

PERRY: I say that a prophet is generally not loved in their hometown. That’s both Biblical and practical.

As they wrote in their post and as we've been following here at C&L as well, there's a long list of reasons Texas voters might not be too thrilled with Perry.

As the state’s longest serving governor in history, Perry has faced persistently low approval ratings as he’s pushed through a radical right-wing agenda that has left Texas with a record budget deficit, the third highest poverty rate in the country, and the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the country. As Think Progress has documented, Perry has a history of ducking tough questions by invoking religion, and has suggested in the past that he’s just implementing God’s will on Earth through his irresponsible governance. Perry may be answering Republicans’ prayers if he enters the race, but it’s still pretty self-aggrandizing to call himself a prophet.

The GOP is already pushing a false story they're dubbing "The Texas Miracle" that "37% of all jobs created in the U.S. since Obama was elected were created in Texas."

Not only is this a total falsehood based upon a passing comment by the Texas Fed Chair to a WSJ blogger friend, but nearly half of Perry's "Miracle" jobs were GOVERNMENT jobs paid for with STIMULUS FUNDS.

I saw a clip this morning of Perry, who was a stand in speaker for Trump at last night's Lincoln dinner. The first thought to hit my brain was, he sounds just like bush. Using that good ole boy drawl. Also just like bush he seems to think he's cute when he does this stuff. Oh god, please not another bush reminder in the white house. I don't think any of us can take that.

Can I suggest it would be logical to suggest perhaps someone should nail him up, just to make him happy?

Or would that violate C&L's strict code against advocating violence?

It could be done non-violently, in a loving expression of our sincere desire he reach his life's fulfillment.

Or ya gonna deep-six this post?

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

People who know Perry don't know Perry. No one living today knows Perry. Not even Perry's mother knows Perry. It's impossible. Only the people of the future can truly know Perry.

So get in line with Dubya.

to curse his memory and the day he was born.

if perry considers himself a prophet, aka jesus christ, then he should know how his story is going to end, don't you think? after all he is a prophet. prophets can see into the future. his future isn't looking so pretty

People like Perry believe that Christ is God made flesh. For them a prophet would be Moses, who lived a long ass time and got to smite all the evil-dooers.

If you're going to quote the Bible, at least you could get it right.

The Mark 6 version: "4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”

The Luke 4:24 version: “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown."

Loved? Yeah, Jesus talked about love a lot, like loving your neighbor and loving those in need and taking care of them. I don't recall that he ever talked about loving the prophets

BTW: "Governor, I know Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ lives in my heart. You, sir, are no Jesus."

Sitting on 4 billion bucks given to the state of Texas for education and students have to stand out on street corners selling bottles of water to support extra-curricular, and the teachers of core classes have to spend hundreds of dollars each year out-of-pocket... classes are increased in number, teachers with less than 2 years on the job are fired, accomodations for the disabled students, mandated by NCLB have to be consolidated at schools quite a distance from the residences of those students...

But Jeebus loves us and wants us to be prosperous... and ol' Rick's doing his best to help ol' Jeebus out and make himself so.

Since Texas is the South, I guess I've got to follow this rant up with:

"Bless his hawrt."

Maybe the Tea Party doesn't like him, but so what? I loathe Perry but the guy is a good politician - very good, actually. (Yeah, I know, it's the FOX news crowd, but, still, he knows how to work that demographic. Heck, even that HPV vaccine fiasco didn't hurt him, or the Trans-Texas thing with a fer-in' company building it.)

Is he really a good politician? How much of this is just the ignorance of the American people? I mean, Bush was a bumbling fool and got elected twice to the Presidency of the United States. There's no way he was a good politician. I know about the role of the U.S. Supreme Court in the first election and voting shenanigans in the second election, but how on God's Earth did Bush even get close enough that those machinations would have an effect?

Umm... Governor Perry, we don't dislike you because you're a prophet... rather, we dislike you because you're a useless putz.

Slinging bible verses around when they seem to suit your political agenda, or rather, sir, the agenda of your handlers, is singularly unattractive. Were you a Muslim and quoted the Qur'an, the Hadith, the Nahj, or any other scripture that you've never bothered to even learn about, you would have been roasted on a spit, after, perhaps, some visits to your home and office by DHS.

We don't like you because you're a sanctimonious, closeted homophobic shill for your corporate masters and you've never met a business proposition you didn't like, and you've never met a social program that you did.

In short, sir, we dislike you because you're a useless piece of shit who'd be more suited to being a deacon in some blab-it-and-grab-it church in East Texas somewhere.

Just thought I'd clear up that little matter.

Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .

And since Rick Perry advocated the secession from the union for TX, it would be highly unlikely that his leadership would be approprite to the union and in particular to a democracy. Perry is far to accustomed to his self righteous dictums from his throne, he would hardly have the patience to govern for all the people. Stay in TX, Mr. Perry, you can execute people without mercy and deprive the hungry and starve the children and nobody notices.

For crying out loud! This guy might. might have a shot at the primary, but no one would ever give him the pass Texans give him in the general election. He has at best, a very slim chance at running for the presidency, much less winning it.

As for his 'prophet' line? Well, any who has ever read the bible know that it warns of 'false prophets' leading people astray. Treat Perry in the same vein.

NOBODY 2012

Just ask him what he was doing in Istanbul in 2007, dining with the Masters of the Universe...

'Big Dawg' Clinton met with them in 1991. He became Prez. We get shafted with 'Free trade', NAFTA and GATT

Lil Georgie meets with them in 1999. He became Prez. Detailing the horrors since then would take too long.

Obama met with them in 2008. He became Prez. Might as well call himself 'Bush 2.1', as he's not only continued Junior's insane policies but gotten us involved in Libya.

And now Perry. Another tool willing to pimp himself...to the international banksters who created and profited so handsomely from the wars and the economic dislocations they created. While the country falls apart.

bluestatedon's picture

Yes, Perry is a Christianist nutbag who has made it clear he actually hates the United States of America with a black Democrat in the Oval Office. He would like nothing more than to make our country a theocracy ruled over by Evangelical clerics, large corporations and the fossil fuels industry.

As far as the Republican base goes, these aren't bugs—they're features. That's why Perry will cruise to the GOP nomination once he declares. The Teabaggers and the Christianist wingnuts who are disproportiately powerful during the GOP primaries will never accept Romney because of his religion.

"I say that a prophet is generally not loved in their hometown." Ricky--prophet, his hometown or prophets, their hometowns. I think I knew that by like 3rd grade.
