Real Time: The Panel Gets Real on the Topic of Abortion
By Heather Sunday Oct 26, 2008 6:00am
The Real Time Oct. 24, 2008 panel weighs in on McCain's awful comments about abortion during the debate. Comedian Carol Liefer raises some great points about the term "partial birth abortion" being something made up by the religious right to further their agenda of overturning Roe V Wade. It's actually a "late term abortion." And that abortion staying legal in this country is hanging on by a thread.
Apparently Matt Dowd hasn't been to any Palin rallies lately if he thinks no one cares about this issue any more. It will always be a huge money maker for the James Dobson wing of the Republican party. The money quote:
"If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament."
McCain gets a "zero" rating from NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

Very good panel. I've got mixed feelings about Bill Maher after Religulous -- as an atheist, the movie reminded me why most of us keep quiet for fear of sounding like arrogant jerks -- but his panels are always havens of intelligent discussion mixed with insightful humor.
I would say that I think Matt Dowd's analysis was less of "nobody cares about abortion" but more of "abortion is no longer an undecided issue for people in general." I think I would agree with him that the battle lines on that issue have been drawn for so long that the no man's land between them are nigh uninhabitable. I suppose I could be wrong though.
I think Bill gets ahead of himself sometimes, and it's amusing. That one part right before the Gloria Steinem quote, I was saying to myself, "Uh, Bill... why don't you hand that shovel over here, alright?" :)
As long as the lie persists that America is a "christian nation," and religious zealots keep raping their way into politics and the political discussion, this issue will never be settled. Most rationally thinking people would LIKE for it to be settled so that tey can move on to important things like jobs and healthcare and education reform, but as long as the Pat Robertsons, Jerry Falwells, and Mike Huckabess of the world keep making it anything other than a woman's own personal issue, the fight will carry on indefinitely.
...only "settled" until, Bob forbid, McCain or some other Repug nut
(like Sarah Palin) becomes president and appoints reich-wing judges to the Supreme Court.
