The Rachel Maddow Show: McCain Pushes Telecom Agenda Against Web Freedom
Rachel Maddow talks to editor and partner of BoingBoing Xeni Jardin about the bill introduced by Sen. John McCain that would block the FCC from keeping the entire Internet accessible to everyone. I completely agree with Rachel here. If I have to choose between the old guy who admitted that he doesn't know the difference between a MAC and a PC and that has also admitted he has to rely on his wife for "all of the assistance he can get" when it comes to using a computer, and who is as Rachel notes "the single largest Congressional recipient of campaign contributions from the telecom industry from Jan. 2007-June of this year", I'm going to "side with the geeks" as well who think this is a really bad idea.
Marcy Wheeler has more on this over at FDL--McCain Rediscovers His Passion for Screwing Us with Bad Telecom Policy and doesn't hold back any punches in her criticism of McCain. Harsh stuff but well deserved IMO.
McCain just joined the ranks of Ted Stevens and those Internet Tubes. Clueless, dangerous and willing to sell himself to the highest bidder on an issue he has absolutely no business being allowed to make policy on.

xeni is very articulate, and as a telecom engineer myself i can attest, from a technical viewpoint her information is accurate and well presented. in addition you're wrong, she's cute as a button.
She didn't present any real technical information that I heard. I couldn't care less if she was cute or how she dresses but she sounded about as much like a technical expert as the Fox "internet Experts"
Take a look at the corporate MSM such as it is , now imagine if the big corporate ISP's and their Repug friends are able to control internet access ! I think this is the most important issue that there is today and we'd damned well better insist absolutely on net neutrality .It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out , what would happen if the corporations ( and the Repugs ) get what they want on this one !

As I said below the Net Neutrality argument is really more complicated than people think. Net Neutrality is actually a deficiency in underlying Internet technology, being able to label packets with different priorities would be quite useful to a more advanced Internet, for example to support things like real time videoconferencing. The problem is that we can't trust the corporations that run the backbone to use the new technology the way it should be rather than to give preference to their packets and their other corporate buddies. She didn't get into any of the real technical issues at all.
It all supply side economics when it comes to raping and pillaging the planet. Funny how things get suddenly scarce when we're talking about bandwidth. Assholes.

I love smart attractive women but she had nothing substantive to add to the discussion. As I said above this isn't the black and white issue everyone on the left makes it out to be. There are good technical reasons to NOT want all packets to be considered equal. Most other network protocols have that built in already, the Internet doesn't because the original designers were going for a lowest common denominator. For a next generation Internet it would make a lot of sense, if we could trust the Telcos to use it correctly and not to screw everyone but big corporations. I know we CAN'T trust them but my point is that "Net Neutrality" is really taking a bad technical decision because we don't trust the telcos. I would have liked to hear some more detailed discussion of the real issue including why there are good technical reasons to not want net neutrality.

I'm for Net Neutrality, however I think this person gave a very shallow explanation of the issue, its not quite as black and white as everyone thinks.
What this is about is adding capability to the Internet that most other network protocols already have, something called Quality of Service. The idea is that if I'm doing a real time video conference I need better response than if I'm downloading a file. With other network protocols you have that built in. So even though some of the original designers of the Internet are against this many are also for it and from a purely technical standpoint it makes perfect sense.
Having said that I am still against it because I don't trust people like AT&T to use this the way it is meant to. It could just as easily be used to give higher priority to real time videoconference packets (good thing) as to give higher priority to packets from specific corporate providers (very bad thing).

I actually played a small role in developing the initial Internet, back when it was still called the Arpanet.
I was a student of her father, Glenn B. Hamm. He was a master of the human figure and one of the greatest artists I ever met, and one of the finest human beings. He died of Lou Gehrig's Disease in my fourth year at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he taught until his illness made that impossible. Xeni was only 4 years old when I met Glenn, (and under 10 years of age when he died) and he talked about her every day. She was the light of his life, and if I could only pass one message to her, I'd like her to know that her Dad was a great man, and most of all, he loved her.
