Rachel Maddow Show: Frank Schaeffer on How Hate Speech Leads to Violent Acts
By Heather Tuesday Jun 02, 2009 9:00am
Rachel Maddow talks to author of Crazy for God Frank Schaeffer about the murder of Dr. George Tiller. Schaeffer apologized for his and his father's role in contributing to the death of Dr. George Tiller in his article at The Huffington Post How I (and Other "Pro-Life" Leaders) Contributed to Dr. Tiller's Murder. From the article:
In the late 1970s my evangelical pro-life leader father Francis Schaeffer and Dr. C. Everett Koop (who soon become Surgeon General in the Reagan administration) went on the road with me taking the documentary antiabortion film series I produced and directed ( Whatever Happened to the Human Race?) to the evangelical public. The series and companion book eventually brought millions of heretofore non-political evangelical Americans into the antiabortion crusade. We personally also got people like Jerry Falwell, Ronald Reagan and countless Republican leaders involved in the "issue."
In the early 80s my father followed up with a book that sold over a million copies called A Christian Manifesto. In certain passages he advocated force if all other methods for rolling back the abortion ruling of Roe v. Wade failed. He compared America and its legalized abortion to Hitler's Germany and said that whatever tactics would have been morally justified in removing Hitler would be justified in trying to stop abortion. I said the same thing in a book I wrote (A Time For Anger) that right wing evangelicals made into a best seller. For instance Dr. James Dobson (of the Focus On the Family radio show) gave away over 100,000 copies.
Like many writers of moral/political/religious theories my father and I would have been shocked that someone took us at our word, walked into a Lutheran Church and pulled the trigger on an abortionist. But even if the murderer never read Dad's or my words we helped create the climate that made this murder likely to happen.
[....]
Angry speech has become the norm in American religion from both the right and the left. Words are spoken which -- when taken seriously -- lead directly to violence by the unhinged and/or the truly committed.
Schaeffer addressed the hateful rhetoric from those like Bill O'Reilly during the interview and O'Reilly's unwillingness, unlike Schaeffer, to take responsibility for his words.
Schaeffer: And when you look at what happened to Dr. Tiller, there's a direct line connecting the rhetoric that I was part of as a young man and this murder. And so people like me are responsible for what we said and what we did and the way we raised the temperature on this debate out of all bounds. And so when O'Reilly talks about the fact that these people of the far left are against Fox or against him or trying to muzzle debate, he's telling a lie.
I am not a member of the far right. Until I voted for Barack Obama in the last election I was a lifelong Republican and I am still pro-life. I also believe abortion should be legal, but I agree with Barack Obama when he says we ought to find ways to help women, help children, give contraceptives, sex education to lessen the number of abortions. I think abortion is a tragedy. But I also think that pretending that you can call abortion murder and Tiller the baby killer, etc., etc., etc. and that these words don't have an impact is crazy. So this is what helps unhinge a society, talking like that. And I apologize and I will apologize again. I am sorry for what I did.
I commend Frank Schaeffer for speaking out and bringing some sanity to the conversation and acknowledging how the right has hijacked the religious community for political gain, and just what the consequences of that political decision have been.

Of course Conservatives never bring that matter up.
... they are trying to establish an equivalence by omission (esp. by not stating the facts.)
Just like the perennial trolls in this site get their panties all twisted up if someone describes a GOPer using strong language. Apparently, a liberal calling a GOPer an "idiot" is a far graver offense than a GOPer killing a liberal.
The skewed scale of values that has lead us to such a degenerate society is a sight to behold: Where saying "fuck" gets people enraged, but a murder based on hate speech is "a small price to pay for freedom of speech" according to the same crowd. Talk about hypocrisy of the highest caliber...
agree completely with your points.
Good post.
...they are paid with meth, video games, porn, etc. to simply bring confusion to issues that are indefensible.
it was at a baseball game, and I had been drinking a bit, and i had descended into 'fucking this' and 'fucking that,' so when some guy told me he didn't like it, i told him go fuck himself. While he was getting up the courage to charge me (and i was silently hoping he would, so I could sue the shit out of him and the ball-club), the ushers came to usher me out. I didn't go quietly.
and i spent the night in the pokey...
friends later told me that my antagonist, after I was hauled away, bragged that he "didn't like to hear shit like that" in front of his "fucking family."
a fuckin stand up fuckin guy.
Probably a cool fuckin dude to fuckin hang the fuck out with.
fuck!
Fuck that fucking fuck.
I love to cuss.
Fuckin cussin fuckin rocks!
I'm your fuckin' guy...
Come the fuck on down to fuckin sunny fuckin fla!
I hate when people try to limit cursing in a public area, especially at a sport's event. If you can't say "fuck" at a sporting event, then we are doomed. That guy should have minded his own business and left you the hell alone. Funny how those asshole parents who tell every person around them to not cuss in front of their family, routinely do it themselves. If I recall correctly, no child was ever harmed by the word "fuck."
On a side note, "fuck" is one of my most favorite words while "intimacy" and "panties" make my ears cringe.
--quickly diving in to divert attention and focus of debate (even on this site). their talking points in hand ready to disable any contrary assessment of their (or their masters') agenda. and imo the more vulnerable they are, the quicker they seem to appear here.
Words have consequences, I am all for freedom of speech. However, if your speech gets people killed... you need to be held responsible.
I don't believe in "preventive" censorship. Let these assholes speak, and when someone does something harmful based on their works/words. Then prosecute them.
"Mein Kampf" was "just a book."
Awesome talking point for us. Thanks.
That's what I think should happen too.
Remember Rwanda. Remember that the airwaves were used to incite. 800,000 people killed in such a short time over the hate-speech.
ya the Communist Manifesto was just a book as well and look what ultra liberal horrors that caused in the Soviet Union aka gulags, no personal freedoms, secret police. Hmmm, its interesting how it cuts both ways.
It appears that you are simply trying to do exactly what toiboi describes above @ 11:29. Unless you actually believe that the Soviet Union was a "liberal" nation.
WTF? Most rational people have always considered it to have been authoritarian Chris.
Yeah, well, so was Mein Kampf.
sort of crimes associated with any authoritarian regime: censorship, corrupt courts, a rubber stamp legislative body, news media that are a mouthpiece for state propaganda, repression of those who are inconvenient or oppose the state, militarism, and top-to-bottom corruption of the political apparatus. A lot like America under Bush, really.
Arresting people based on the potential influence of their words on crime would be like "thought police" stuff.
The issue at play here, to me, is the irresponsibility and sheer greed of the media—created almost entirely from the FCC's mistake of allowing too much consolidation and not regulating anything.
The solution? The FCC needs to break up the conglomerates.
It's one thing to have a guy screaming extremist rhetoric on a corner, and another to have him syndicated across the country.
They could also force the media to offer a certain percentage of programming that's in the public interest, not just for their own greedy profits. Hey, it used to happen. In fact, that's why they offered the evening news to begin with.
The Supreme Court has rejected prior restraint..however, what Durden is proposing is outright unconstitutional.
Brandenburg v. Ohio is the Supreme Court case that spells this out. Punishing speech is unconstitutional unless it provokes immanent, lawless action--for example, walking up to someone who is about to hit another person in the head with a baseball bat and screaming "Do it!! Kill him!!"
Bernard Goldberg, a**hole that he is, wrote that book called "100 People Who Are Screwing Up America"--or whatever the title was. The guy who shot up the Unitarian Church in Knoxville cited that book as an influence regarding why he committed the crime.
Are you suggesting someone like Goldberg should go to prison?
Any crazy person, whatever their political persuasion, can cite a book to justify why he/she committed a crime. That shifts the burden from the criminal onto the person who wrote an obnoxious piece of political propaganda. Publishing political propaganda is not illegal, nor should it be, because the the force of the law can be used by those in power to silence political opponents
and it is very good.
This is the first time I have ever heard a pro-life person say he is sorry and that words do matter.
Rachel and her producers are getting great guests on her show.
for her interviews.
... and she is knowledgeable enough to actually have an informed discussion, and call some of her guests on their spin when granted. Which is a welcome sight with respect to the perennial shouting matches or PR stunts that are most commentary programs.
It is sad, that she is the exception not the rule, we have a loooong way to go before the adults are back in charge.
but it's a damn good start!
ofttimes comes the opportunity for growth and change.
And if ever we needed growth and change, it's now.
Yes, Good guest!
Well, the Platonists and the Neo-Platonists taught that cognition causae initiation.
They killed Bugs Bunny on TV because people were afraid of showing such violence on the air.
Bugs Bunny was murdered on TV??!!??
Oh, the humanity! (I guess I missed that episode. Did Elmer Fudd finally succeed in "hunting wabbits?")
What a maroon!
It was because he was a leftie:

I commend the man for coming forward and accepting his part in this tragedy, however, he is ether a fool or deluded if he really never thought that advocating force in furthering a cause could not ever possibly motivate some cretin to act.
Also, the right far outpaces the left in hate speech, they've perfected it into an art. It's part of the package that appeals to their angry, frothing masses.
Both he and his father knew their audience. How could they not? After 5 minutes with an evangelical one understands how black and white and irrational they are.
Most likely, you have a greater degree of self-awareness than those who still hold a dualistic world view. Self-awareness and reflection lead to a wider perspective & give us the ability to recognize complex patterns of thought & behavior in ourselves & others. This recognition, in turn, gives us the unique ability to change who we are both as individuals and culturally & socially. This is why evangelicals & fundamentalists found a home in the GOP - religious fundamentalism & reactionary conservatism share the same ancestors.
A dualistic world view is used to control people precisely because it's simplistic & easily integrated. It lends itself to systems of domination & subordination by inducing the belief, on an individual basis, that we are incapable of self-determination & must be led by those who are stronger & smarter than we are. It preys on some of our innate tendencies, such as the rough symmetry of our physiology, while actively suppressing other tendencies, such as mutual aid & cooperation.
Dualism shouldn't be underestimated - it's at least as old as Plato & has been oppressing us for as long.
however, they sure do manage to find a nice shade of gray when they need it.
With the amount of crazy out there, I hope he is taking precautions. I live in Kansas City (on the MO side though, big diff) and everywhere I go people are buzzing, and taking either one extreme or the other. I literally stood behind a customer at the grocery store yesterday that asked the cashier if they were happy or angry about Tiller's murder. The cashier (all of 17 maybe) tried to deflect, and the man just kept pushing, getting louder and louder and almost accusing this poor girl of being a baby killer herself until a manager came over to diffuse. It was a short moment, but it was scary, because it happened in MY grocery store. These extreme pro-lifers are a special kind of crazy and they are dangerous.
There of that ilk who would scream at a low-wage cashier for not wishing them Merry Christmas.
to delivering an asswhuppin to that guy.
Me and my friends were watchin this show last night, and they're moving to Kansas next month...(why anyone would move to Kansas from Key Largo mystifies me)...and they were like "Great! That's what we're moving to!"
I kinda wish they'd reconsider.
Bet that guy's got his sights on someone. What happened to "none of your fucking business what I think."
Force when the GOP come back into power.
That's FUNNY!!!
Back in power...the GOP...HA!
I saw this piece last nite...twice.
I commend Mr. Schaeffer on his honesty and for myself accept his apology.
I personally abhor abortion but understand the need for choice. I think if we were to ever meet, Mr. Schaeffer would find my moral view quite close to his, and believe there would be enough middle ground to reach a compromise.
That is the essence of his position IMHO, that and the need to tone down the rhetoric and end the violence. I think it is also the position of the President.
Unfortunately, extremism exists on both sides...and the crazies on the right that promote violence unfortunately have poisoned the atmosphere for all.
People like Mr. Schaeffer need to be supported. The issue of choice is not going away.
We should support Mr. Schaeffer and those like him.
I remember some of Frank Schaeffer's books from the 1980s. They were, well, REALLY bad. He would rant on and on about the ACLU, "homosexual lobby", secular humanists, etc....
I recently read his book "Crazy For God." I couldn't believe it was written by the same guy. He's repudiated most of the crazy right-wing Calvinism of his youth and really matured in his faith.
I recently pre-ordered his new book "Patience With God." I'm looking forward to reading it!
to him seeking help with his deteriorating mental health at some point.
I am not joking, but a lot of public conservative figures... display clear patterns of mental instability.
He's clearly distressed at what he's seeing, and obviously he is feeling the remorse and conflict that he and his father may have contributed to the atmosphere that has led us to this place.
he was raised by his father, "indoctrinated" into the church, if you will. It seems that later in life he began to question and reassess some of these beliefs. Nothing is more difficult than changing a belief system, especially for someone who's entire life is immersed in that culture. I'm sure he was very alone for a long time, suspect to the left and enemy of the right.
just isn't right in my book.
People can change can't they?
and Schaeffer seems to have not only changed, but is repentant for his past discretions. That takes character and humility.
And I applaud him for it!
...which one of the rabid right-wing media whores will be the first to denounce Mr. Schaeffer as a turncoat traitor (along the lines of Scott McClellan et al)?
Anyone care to guess?
My money's on Bill "Bloody Hands" O'Reilly.
Rachel is great but she tip toes around religion so much.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Matthew 5:27-28 (KJV)
_________________________________________________________________
So although it's tailored specifically to adultery, it clearly shows that scripturally the thought precedes the action, the temptation precedes the sin, and both are equally wrong, so it raises the question, what if a third party helped place the thought within you, what is their responsibility?
potter creating the 'cracked pot' (robt browning's fra lippo lippi)
It is a sin to tempt others. Think of the myth of Adam and Eve and the serpant's role.

(I'm on a deadline...)
there's a verse in the New Testament that charges the teachers of God's word that if they cause one of the faithful to stumble, the teacher in question will suffer eternal damnation.
But false prophets arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. These false teachers will infiltrate your midst with destructive heresies, even to the point of denying the Master who bought them. As a result, they will bring swift destruction on themselves. 2 And many will follow their debauched lifestyles. Because of these false teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation pronounced long ago is not sitting idly by; their destruction is not asleep.
2 Peter 2:1-3

But it works just the same.
Matthew 18:6... however I have the other verses to provide context. The child in this case is the believer.
When Jesus said "whoso shall offend one of these..." he's not talking about offending a child in a sense that we take the word or expression, but rather causing the believer to commit a sin.
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
what if a third party helped place the thought within you

Former McCain Supporter Accuses the Senator of “Deliberately Feeding the Most Unhinged Elements of Our Society the Red Meat of Hate” http://www.democracynow.org/2008/10/13/former...
“John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as ‘not one of us,’ I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.
“At a Sarah Palin rally, someone called out, ‘Kill him!’ At one of your rallies, someone called out, ‘Terrorist!’ Neither was answered or denounced by you or your running mate, as the crowd laughed and cheered. At your campaign event Wednesday in Bethlehem, Pa., the crowd was seething with hatred for the Democratic nominee—an attitude encouraged in speeches there by you, your running mate, your wife and the local Republican chairman.
“Shame!

This was an excellent show.
independent journalism alive. Amy is great.
are these people not amer taliban? a few recant, yes. still, keeping their belief system front and center and not accountable is a concerted effort to make their religions/cults' agenda accessible to a wider audience. imo
The amer taliban need to be asked that question directly. what makes them different than mid east extremists?
"We're Christians."
They will totally fail in seeing the significance or the impact of the question.
Rachel even you fall for the sloganeering pro-abortion or pro-life framed by the rightwing; the only acceptable way of framing this argument is one is either pro-choice or anti-choice. The people who are pro-abortion are pro-life for the mother.
and just to echo - - women's clinics are being jeopardized by these violent anti-choice cretins. and, therefore women's health.
I am going to preface this by saying I do not agree with late term abortion. I am also not pro-life. It is ashame that Tiller was killed.
But anyways, how is women's health being placed in jeopardy. If the womans health is truly in jeopardy then a hospital can perform an abortion just as well as a clinic. Party of the Intellectual. Ha.
As Rachel pointed out in another segment of the show... Hospitals are steering clear of performing such procedures, thus leaving it up to the clinics to provide the services.
It's active terrorism. While abortion is legal, one minority is forcing the majority to adhere to their supposed standards, by using violence and threats of violence.
ya and do you really think if the mothers health was really in danger then the hospital would do what they have to do. small thing called the hippocratic oath. If it is elective then ya your argument has some validity.
I work in a hospital and they are not done there, to my knowledge never have been done there. I will tell you what I have repeated on a couple of other threads here. I know of one, ONE, person (my former college roommate) who had a late term abortion. In her case the baby was anencephalic, it had no brain, that is incompatible with life. It also had a profoundly severe case of spina bifida, spine open, spinal cord exposed, as well as many, many other malformations and deformities. The fetus was destined to die. She had her abortion and it was so horrible and traumatic for her that she never became pregnant again, pretty much gave up on sex. No one ever does these things lightly. This was a baby that was very much wanted. You really have no idea what you are talking about.
I would ask any anti-abortion extremist to consider what they would do in a similar situation.
To know that you would carry a child full-term simply so it could die.
Or so it could live without a brain.
Would they be willing to pay the hospital bills to keep that child alive?
You are wrong. Even if the mother's health is in danger, there are some hospitals who will NOT perform an abortion, either because they're a religious-based hospital and its not permitted, or because doctors these days are NOT TRAINED to do abortions.
Do you understand that the procedure is sometimes necessary to save the life of the mother?
Do you understand that it comprises less than 1% of all abortions?
Do you know that when anyone except Dr. Tiller says "I know the abortions weren't medically necessary" -- that they're LYING - because they don't have access to the women involved OR their medical records?
Do you know that Dr. Tiller did not perform JUST late term abortions?
Do you know that some religions value the life of the mother above the life of the child? And if the baby needs to be sacrificed to save the mother - that is what they are morally bound to do?
*
ummmm shootings and bombings at womens health clinics comes to mind. Unless you don't think bullets and bombs jeopradize health.
Whether you're aware of it or not, there are legal restrictions on abortions. Read some of the many stories emerging over the past few days--even when women's health is in jeopardy, some hospitals WILL NOT perform an abortion. In any case. At all.
Exremism, especially violent, isn't born in a vacuum. Nor does it grow and flourish in a vacuum. It becomes part of a culture or sub-culture, that give it what it needs, especially perspective and language.
Roeder's ex-wife has described how he 'evolved' over a decade, from being an anti-tax/anti-government extremist, to becoming an Old Testament 'eye for an eye' believer, and then fixating on abortion. It's no coincidence that the terms that Roeder regularly used are the same ones you hear day after day from the likes of Bill O'Reilly, Randall Terry and other high-profile 'pro-life' voices (i.e., the conscience decision in the 1980's by pro-life groups to substitute the word 'baby' for 'fetus' as often as possible. Solely for its emotional impact value)..
And when these individuals and groups actually come together, the verbiage can become a frightening din. Witness Terri Schiavo. When, located in one place, for weeks, augmented by media pundits - Fox News/Sean Hannity literally set up shop there - and blogs, the 'Save Terri' groups became a chorus of hatred, slander, distorsions and outright lies, mainly directed towards Michael Schiavo. And when every Court ruled on the facts in favor of Michael, you had the spectacle of one of the most undemocratic examples of political pandering in recent history as the leadership of the Republican party orchestrated its 'war on the Judiciary' (remember those 'Justice Sunday', the 'activist judges' mantra, the threats of legislation stripping courts from being able to hear end of life cases...). And Bill Frist in his Senate office diagnosing Terri from an EDITED videotape. Talk about a rabid and dangerous (to our democracy) political-cultural coalition.
Not every supporter or advocate of these groups, and especially their language, will become a Roeder. But there's something perhaps even more dangerous to our democracy: the language of the pro-life extemists is so extreme, so much a part of anything they say about abortion, that in fact it renders nearly impossible any serious, rational discussion and possible solutions. Obama had it dead right in his Notre Dame speech.
The only way we'll ever come to some kind of resolution or acceptable compromise, is for both sides to step back from the hate-based, deliberately antagonistic, 'cultural warrior' language. And to stop being manipulated by those that engage in it from the heights of their religious and secular pulpits.
That was wonderful.
'One woman who turned to him was Miriam Kleiman, of northern Virginia. Nine years ago, a routine sonogram revealed her 29-week-old fetus had major brain abnormalities that prevented the baby's heart and lungs from functioning properly.
Doctors told her the baby would die in utero or soon after birth. Kleiman's doctors told her a third trimester abortion was not possible.
Kleiman says she could not bear a two-month death watch. 'There was a baby dying inside of me, and it wasn't if, but when,' she says.
After desperate pleas, she says, a doctor scribbled Tiller's name on a scrap of paper. She and her husband flew to Wichita and drove through a gauntlet of protesters to the fortress-like clinic.
She remembers Tiller and his staff as kind and compassionate. She had the abortion and brought home her baby to be buried.
Kleiman, who now has two sons, says she cried when she heard of Tiller's death while watching her son's soccer game.
'I fear,' she says, 'that other people might not have this option in the future _ to have a medical option that was safe, that was legal and allowed us to say goodbye with dignity.' (AP)
If pro-life doctors are so all-important, why don't the reichwing legally stop them from participating in executions?
I wonder why it is that few, if any, of the high-profile anti-abortion voices who call abortions "murder" and who want to make abortion illegal and who are willing to send a doctor to prison, get cold feet when it comes to saying out loud that the woman should also get sent to prison. I bring this up because if a wife contracts with someone to kill her husband, but the killer and the wife are charged with murder. Could it be that they don't want it framed that way?
If say for instance scientist were capable of isolating the gay gene and it became possible to test for this gene, would these people be so quick to condemn abortion? Or would they have the child thinking it would be eventually bullied enough to commit suicide?
Because we all know these people care more about a fetus than a living breathing human, especially one who is gay.
So, are you going to stick with your statement @1:41 "far left"
AND
@1:50 "far right"?
Or, are we just supposed to assume that we knew what he meant?
