Rachel Maddow: How Not to Respond to an Oil Spill -- Booming Fails on Louisiana Coast
Rachel Maddow talked to Mike Blum of Tulane University about how the booms being used to contain, or rather not contain, the oil in the Gulf and keep it off of the Louisiana shoreline and out of the marshes are not working. As Rachel notes, you don't have to know anything about booming to know that what's been put out has been done incorrectly and is pretty well useless.
For anyone that didn't catch this a few weeks ago, Fishgrease at Daily KOS wrote a diary on what a proper f**king boom looks like and it's not safe for work. What Rachel just showed in the clip above looks like what Fishgrease describes as f**king useless. Diary here Fishgrease: DKos Booming School and it's been made into a video at You Tube which is also not safe for work, so don't hit the play button on the video below if it's going to get you in trouble.

What bright spark thought it was a good idea to attempt to tackle the worst environmental disaster in US history with what amounts to some dental floss and a few toothpicks? Sub-pathetic.
At the end of her show last night, Rachel laid it out clearly. The booming is a joke, and the place is disgusting and stinky.
Oil companies are the richest corps in the world, yet they are using BAMBOO STICKS to hold booms in place.
I WAS ENRAGED.
Rachel delivers the facts so compassionately and directly. She is the one to watch.
Is anyone trying to educate the people with the booms now? If this video were cleaned up of the cursing, it would be a good teaching tool and could also be shown on tv to educate the public.
At this point I don't know what to think about regarding any of this. Yeah I'm mad that this happened but now I just want it to stop so the nightmare can't grow any larger. It's just emotionally overwhelming.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Yeah, relentlessly emotionally overwhelming.
No, I don't think the language should be cleaned up. The person who made it is obviously an expert in her field of booming, and she's REALLY pissed off at the incompetence. Leave it just the way it is, she's expressing the heartfelt thoughts of all Americans about the way this clusterfuck has been handled.
Except for idiots like Palin, of course, and her merry band of dittoheads.

light on what exactly is wrong with unbridled capitalism and how patheticly weak our government is (if you discount our ability to make war).
I liked the booming experts take on everything from BP to Obama to the POS Coast Guard commander.
It seems BP is actually in charge of the U.S. government. Very distressing indeed.
I'm at work, so i'm reluctant to play the 2nd video. Can someone who's not at work explain what makes it unsafe?
Just about every curse word invented is said on the video with fu*k being repeated dozens of times.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
F-bombs are not a problem.
What? You were thinking naked ladies were applying the boom?... so to speak.
It certainly gets across the point that there is a correct way and incorrect way to do booming. I doubt if I will forget the lesson.
without a flotation vest???
Come on, girl!
I expect more from you.
Maybe it's under her shirt???
OK I'm not there but...
Every time I see some booming it is either on the beach or stretched out in front of the shore wrongly. Does ANY of it catch any oil? And what the hell happens to the oil that gets caught?? They never show the oil being collected. It just seems like it is a joke. A cruel horrible joke. I saw some video of boom in the marsh. WTF is that all about? I would think that every foot of boom needs to be tended all the time or it is useless. I never see it tended. Plus, according to the fucking DKos Booming School ALL the boom I have ever seen is not applied properly. Just a huge waste of time and a cruel joke.
Thanks for finally posting on this!
I'd posted the Fishgrease DKOS diary in comments here before. I'm guessing no one clicked it. I can't see how you could have and not been outraged.
To the booming expert on video 2 - tell it like it is sistah! Fuck all the incompetent fucks!
Too bad BP didn't cut back the shareholder's dividend just 1%, they might have had enough to properly boom this spill. As it is, with a 15% stock price drop and likely to tank, maybe BP should have done a better job at planning and preparing for disaster. To them disaster only means financial, not ecological.

That is a huge part of this. BP said they were prepared for a leak/spill/disaster 10 times this big. They said it in the papers they filed to get a permit to drill. Then shithead Tony Hayward says they didn't have the tools in the damn toolbox. Isn't that fraud? Hopefully that is jail time I smell and not just the odor of tar balls wafting through the air.
what BP claims it is, huh?

In the Gulf and Eastern seaboard feel about offshore drilling now.
Wait till it gets into the Chesapeake Bay. They'll be bummed when they lose all their oysters. No more for the country club.
Do you think they'll notice now?
What is your conceptual, continuity?

Best sentence award...
This is what I was saying a few posts up. When have you ever seen somebodies or somebody tending these booms??? When? They always do it wrong.
Rachel did an amazing job, as usual, uncovering all the BP/Oil biz crap and just reported the FACTS... Funny how those little tidbits drive republican politicians out of their collective minds!!!
BUT, the other point here is that during Rachel's coverage last evening - AT THE SAME TIME - the Guardian UK Newspaper (probably one of the last newspaper that tries to tell most of the truth) was announcing that BP was ignoring what the US was asking of them and PAYING OUT $ 10 BILLION to their shareholders for the quarter.. $ 10 BILLION!!!
Are these people mad or just the classic wanker???
they've done. Don't think that all the CEO's, etc. don't own shares. They all do.
You're absolutely right.... They've said so yesterday...
Here's the ;ink:

Deep Horizon go boom.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
My daughter is 10 and is quite curious about 'bad words' and why, if they're bad, do they exist?
Without going into the specific words, I've explained that no word is bad by itself. It has all to do with context. That said, bad words are _very_ good at bringing attention to something that needs it. They are like "super exclamation points" that can be used almost anywhere in a sentence. They shock and irritate people into listening. They are useful, nay, necessary to the language and even you, someday, will use one or two.
When the time comes that I'm ready to include specific words into a future talk, I'm going to use that clip.
It is fucking brilliant
she wanted to when talking to me, but only when talking to me. I had a few shocking moments, but they passed quickly. Unless she's really angry, she hardly ever swears, even when talking to me, and she's an adult now. This arrangement allowed us to discuss, in some detail, free speech and appropriate speech.
The booms only work in best of conditions by keeping oil that floats behind the boom. When dispersant break up the oil into the little globules that sink below the surface, a boom can no longer contain oil, because the oil just passes below the skirt that is suspended by the floatation portion of the boom.
The best way to prevent oil on beaches is to ban offshore drilling. find altrernatives to the use of oil.

The oil orgy is over. We've burned through about half of conventional oil reserves estimated at about 2 trillion barrels. We've burned through the "easy" oil and the rest of it is in remote places, deep water, or sour heavy crude and its extraction will pose more and more environmental hazards. We don't give a shit anymore, just give us another hit of that oil and look the other way. Who wouldn't want a new SUV with heated leather seats and a kickass stereo?
BP is typical of the wham, bam, thank you ma'am mentality of the oil companies. They don't want to be bothered cleaning up a "fucking" mess. An earlier video from an airplane showed boats dropping booms into the water haphazardly. There was obviously no plan or coordination, just a show.
BP has to be terminated. It's name should become a dirty word. It's leaders who are culpable should serve hard time. The fact that these thugs are going around the Gulf like a law unto themselves is especially galling. Bastards.
If they've got fifty million to throw at their effed up image, they can sure as hell pay the hard hit people of the gulf states to monitor and manage those booms. They're not cheaper than bamboo sticks, but it's better PR than those insipid radio and tv commercials that make us want to vomit.
