Rachel Maddow weighs in on the overt racism that the GOP and their counterparts in the media don't seem to be too concerned about expressing these days.

BECK: This president, I think, has exposed himself as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seed hatred for white people or the white culture.

LIMBAUGH: Here you have a black president trying to destroy a white policeman. I think he is genuinely revved up about race. You know me. I think he is genuinely angry in his heart and has been his whole life.

MALKIN: I think he is a racial opportunist.

LIMBAUGH: Look, I had a dream. I had a dream that I was a slave building a sphinx in a desert that looked like Obama.

BECK: He has a problem. He has a - this guy is, I believe, a racist.

LIMBAUGH: And after that, they‘re going to go after Oreos. Might have to put that off until Obama is out of office, but they‘ll eventually go after Oreos.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MADDOW: Now, the racial divide in this country didn‘t disappear when Barack Obama was elected president. And no reasonable person has expected it to. But it is somewhere between eyebrow raising and breathtaking to have such blunt, unvarnished race-baiting so forward in the national discourse right now.

And the type of race baiting to which we‘re subjected is fairly specific and fairly consistent. The argument that the president hates white people, for example, which you just heard Glenn Beck make on Fox News, that it‘s he, the president, who is racist, that argument dovetails perfectly with the arguments made against Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor and the far more genteel setting of the United States Senate.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KYL: Many of Judge Sotomayor‘s public statements suggest she may indeed allow or even embrace decision making based on her biases and prejudices.

SESSIONS: Her wise Latina -

GRASSLEY: Your wise Latina comment -

COBURN: Already prejudiced against one of the parties.

GRASSLEY: Allow biases and personal preferences. She said that a wise - quote, “wise Latina would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male.”

CORNYN: And that ethnicity and gender can and even should have an impact on a judge‘s decision-making.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MADDOW: The language of our Republican senators is less blatant than the language of professional conservative talkers. But the theme is the same. What we have here are ethnic minorities who can‘t be trusted to use their official power fairly because they‘re prejudiced against white people.

Now, with or without outrageous cracks about the biracial president being an Oreo, as we just heard from Rush Limbaugh, the conservative movement and the Republican Party are positioning themselves the same here. They‘re positioning themselves as defenders of the interests of white America against the threat posed to white America by people like Obama and Sotomayor.

Are white people in America enraged by having a black president, by the success of people like Obama and Sotomayor? Is there out rage that being white in America no longer guarantees you monopolistic access to the positions of greatest power in this country?

There must be some, certainly, but whether or not this race-baiting political tactic succeeds in the 2000s, depends on whether there is enough of that kind of tappable white rage out there to compensate for how bad it makes these guys look to be seen spewing this kind of overt racial invective.

It's 2009. Racism is over.

We got the new racism. The uppity minorities who don't like us white people. First they cross our borders illegally then they don't like us.

Racism is dead in America, except those dang coloreds who continue being racists to us white folk. Where's his birth certificate? Ship him back to Africa where he came from! Don't want none of that voodoo socialist fascism or radical judicial activism from some uppity darkie who thinks they've got a right to tell us what to do! Damn racists!

Beck seems to be the worst of the lot.

According to Wikipedia, Glen Beck is a Mormon -- LDS.

We should repeat this over and over, for when Mitt Romney enters the next presidential race.

Glenn Beck -- a very prominent Mormon -- is a racist, hate-monger.

How is that for transference?!

Stupid Git's picture

I've been waiting for someone of prominence to say what is so obvious. If you are a minority, you are not trusted to lead. My question is whether this is our of a fear that minorities are lesser life forms incapable of governance, or if it a fear that the tables will be turned and they will enact the same policies on white people as whites have enacted on minorities for generations? Or both.

I know my own mother was afraid of Obama being elected because he was going to staff his administration with Black Panthers and Nation of Islam extremists and our nation would be overtaken by angry black people. I asked her two things.

1. Do you really think the system is so fragile that one guy could topple the entire balance of power?

2. If that absurd delusion where true, what reason is there that black people would be so angry in the first place, and can you blame them?

If this is how white people react after 6 months of "oppression" under Obama, I'd hate to see how bad they'd be after 300 years.

Does the gop slurp when the eat?

I'm all for calling out bigotry and fear-mongering in all it's guises. I have a very difficult time understanding why these knuckle-dragging idiots are even allowed airtime or why otherwise rational people, who care about their neighbors and hold down jobs and love this country as I do, parrot these stupid talking points like gospel. The Republicans have been claiming Obama is overtly racist towards white people- can anyone cite any examples of Obama being racist?

The cry of the conservatives. First black president and he is a racist. No mention of all the white presidents before him ever considered to be racist. If this is the path they want to take. And some minorities will listen and believe it. But here is the truth to ALL minorites in America. When a person calls a black person a ****** he or she is not just refering to black people.

It's clear what offends Limbaugh so much is that a black person would even dare run for president. Limbaugh, like most of his right wing peers is a white supremacist

One thing I have noticed is that the right is using some of the more deranged right wing black individuals like Alan Keyes, and that pastor nut in Harlem to use the N word for them..

Resa's picture

Yeah, Oreo is pretty upsetting. but we were also very fond of "Halfrican". Now that feels like the good old days.

Why is that the entire news "profession" is not all over this story? What a joke! The "news" that Americans are fed on a daily basis is a shameful stew of lies, innuendo, schoolyard fantasies, and downright propaganda fed into the mindless media by a highly organized, spiteful, self-aggrandizing minority.

We should all write, call, and otherwise pound our supposed news media outlets and news "professionals" until they are ashamed enough to provide us with straight reporting instead of the BS they are babbling now.

There is no way we can pull this country back to some sense of pride or productive effort in solving the horrendous set of issues we now face until the "fourth estate" takes its responsibilities to this dissolving democracy seriously.

You have been flagged for projecting..and for being a total lying sack o' crap.

nickrhoward's picture

A strategy the GOP leadership has been using for a few years on a variety of subjects and it works because of our "he said/she said" style of media. Since the media won't actually look at fact and policy, lying works. They can lie all they want and most of the media won't say "the Republicans are lying" because that would be taking sides. So if you are guilty of something just accuse your opponents of doing what you're guilty of doing. The uninformed will just see two sides accusing each other of the same thing and will just believe the ones from their party.

It began not long after the 2000 election when evidence began to come out that that election had been rigged, at least in Florida. They immediately began to talk about Democrats rigging elections. At first they had to go back to the Kennedy election to get a decent example until the might Acorn came along.

The same thing happened a few years later when comparisons began to be made between the GOP agenda and the principles of fascism. Immediately GOP whores began talking about "liberal fascism".

Now in the past year it has become obvious that a large percentage of the GOP hates blacks and hispanics. And suddenly they began calling prominent blacks and hispanics racist.

They're using the same strategy with health care, accusing the government of planning to do what the health insurers the carry water for HAVE BEEN doing all along.

The strategy will continue to work until the media starts calling liars what they are...liars.

Em Tee's picture

Unfortunately. People believe lies easily, especially if they are repeated often enough on TV.

I want no part of a country where people are allowed to spread, unchecked, such hatred. I'm not suggesting that they be censored, but reasonable people need to stand up and say that it's got to stop. Please, step away from the bipartisan red herrings.

Please, grasp that the internet is the newest progressive invention that enables our entire species to become more knowledgeable and to communicate more readily. We now have the unique opportunity to use our exponentially developing technologies to access and organize factual information, and to work together to make macro-level decisions to benefit our entire planet.

Please, recognize that we're "all bozos on this bus"! We cannot exit this planet at the next galaxy, so we must inevitably learn to live together, or continue to sacrifice our young people in unwarranted "wars" that benefit only the wealthiest among us.

Finally, please, please, please, recognize that promoting fear, hate and divisiveness of any kind will never result in anything positive. Reject your fear. Let go your hate.

You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else?" (Matthew 5:43-47) [Do not mistake my use of this quote as an adjuration to embrace some specific organized religion--just listen to the words, which are timeless and universal.]

Gandhi, King, Dalai Lama--these great pacifists and others like them give excellent examples of effective responses to 'hatemongering' and fear. One doesn't need to wear rose-colored glasses to recognize that love is the most effective palliative in these trying times. Love can also help those who aspire to effective pacifism to accept that those who hate or fear are the only ones who can find their personal path to peaceful membership in our Global Family.

Personally, I pray for patience and acceptance, because people like Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Malkin, Coulter, Savage, et. al really push my hate buttons. Would that I could be like Dalai Lama. :) I wouldn't use the term 'Bloviating Billo' nearly so much!

This has been an on going delusion in the minds of some Caucasian Americans since the introduction of chattel slavery. Their commentary seems to reflect a great deal of projection which makes the fact that they are allowed to spew their rhetoric unchecked even more unfortunate. Because they are vengeful, violent and vindictive individuals and have a full understanding of the pervasive and institutional nature of racism, they can't fathom how people of color in this nation wouldn't react violently to the treatment that many face daily. They know what their reaction would be to the violence they propagate and fear their chickens coming home to roost. Fortunately for them most people they attack are peace loving, forgiving and rational and thereby not a threat to their miserable existence.
