Rachel Maddow on the GOP's latest conspiracy theory. Republicans are trying to rally their base by painting health care reform as a way to advance assisted suicide and to literally kill old people. It would be bad enough if this were only coming from fringe groups or right wing web sites, but as Rachel notes, it's coming straight from these politicians' mouths.
The Republicans continue to prove that Bill Maher was right about them with this kind of talk.
Maher: This is because we don't have a left and a right party in this country any more. We have a center right party, and a crazy party. And over the last thirty odd years, Democrats have moved to the right, and the right has moved into a mental hospital.

And it's funny you say most liberals you met in NC were transplants from up north...most of the transplants I met from that area were racists and not very nice in general, they made fun of the south, and southern people...didn't leave me with a good impression at all.
Most of the native southerners I know are liberals, I guess it all depends on the individual and who they happen to meet.
My experience is conservatism and liberalism is defined differently from state to state, region to region, even nation to nation.
And on top of that, many if not most would describe their view as moderate and not to either extreme.

So, yes, individuals in NYC are often total racist scum, but institutionalized racism/bigotry embraced by the whole community is more often found in rural southern areas. Like our ghettos here though, it comes more from ignorance, horrible education systems and oppressive religious indoctrination.

It wasn't so long ago "progressives" were angrily denying that the U.S. was a "center-right" country, when some commentator from the further right of the two rightist U.S. parties said that on one of the TV talk shows.
This kind of stuff really pisses me off. Dick Butthead Morris last week said that Obama's plan is going to "kill you." You've got idiots saying that Obama "wants" old people to die. And, we have elected representatives saying crap like this. It's not only a lie; people, notably the elderly, might believe it.
I saw John Boner on Wolf Blitzer's show a short while ago spreading lies again about Obama's health care plan. He said that no one can compete against the governemnt, and if Obama's plan passes, private insurance companies will die.
So I sent Boner an email, asking him about Federal Express and UPS and how they are competing against the USPS. I also read him the riot act about how elected officials in his own party spread these lies and deceitful rhetoric.
These jerks need to be voted out of office. There should be a law against spread hateful lies like they do.

So now, if you catch yourself in an argument with a wingnut, you don't have to go blue in the face quoting text from the actual bill. Just point them to that link. It's pretty good, and covers all the various sources of the rumor.

When you think about it, this strategy of trying to scare the elderly shows that Republicans know that people really like government run health insurance. Think about it. The elderly are all on Medicare. The Republicans are trying to scare them into thinking that health care reform will screw up the universal coverage they already have. If they thought the private insurance market was so great, they would focus their efforts on trying to scare younger people, who are covered by private insurance.
The claims by the "Deathers" are as ridiculous as those of the birthers.
They are claiming that behind Universal Health Care is a conspiracy to force seniors to commit suicide - or worse - in order to reduce costs.
They fail to realize that US seniors citizens have had nationalized health insurance for over 40 years, without euthanasia or coerced suicides.
Older Americans already have Medicare - a single payer system that works, and it is not forcing them to die. Letting the rest of us have that option is not going to change what they have, and isn't going to "kill them".
Maher is absolutely right and I have a feeling that after this health care reform farce passes the Democrats will never get a vote from me again , not if this is the best they can do or will do . That being said, what they are trying to do is to sling enough shite that something sticks. It's an indicator of how desperate they are–and judging by their actions they're more desperate than a cornered rat–though that also means that they are more dangerous too.
I am torn about what Obama should do about it though. Part of me wants him to drop the brave face and start calling out some Republicans on this nonsense, though I realize that if he responds in an angry fashion to the loons, then he's an "Angry Black Man" who is a racist, or some such nonsense.
