President Obama on the Tonight Show
(h/t Heather)
President Obama really excels when he goes on the non political TV shows. He's very natural and like-able and displays a very funny side of himself. That's a great audience for him to reach out to since the majority of these viewers don't sit home watching FOX and listening to Limbaugh all day long. The right wingers are saying that Obama hates all "special Olympics" kids now. ABC's Jake Tapper reached into his stupidmatron and said this:
The first appearance by a sitting president on "The Tonight Show" may well end up being the last.
Talk about looking to try to make something out of nothing, but he's a Villager and that's what they do. Sure, it was a slip of the tongue and something one of us would probably say describing our own bowling ineptitude without meaning any harm to the handicapped. He apologized for it right away, but that won't stop the press to try and find hidden meanings in his words.
John Cook from Gawker has a great post up that destroys these so-called pundits titled:
It's like Obama is holding Tapper et. al. at bay with and extended hand against the forehead, and they keep swinging at air. Aggrieved right-wingers see a double-standard, but the fact is, the only gaffes that will stick to Obama are the ones that shed some light on who he actually is. Ford wasn't unfairly painted as a bumbling doofus—you could hear the reverberations of all those football concussions in his slurred, affectless voice. Bush wasn't unfairly portrayed as a clueless and callow upward-failer—everything about his presidency is a testament to the accuracy of that sketch.
First the press used Coach Mike Krzyzewski's sourpuss joke at President Obama because he didn't pick Duke to win the NCCAA's and now this. Stay tuned for more...

And I won't be paying to see 'I Love You Man' either.
me-oww!
because your crappy player (come on you have billions and this is the best you could do?) won't open on your site when I double click.
me-oww!
Rupert Murdocks right wing propaganda rag the New York Post had on it's' cover a picture of Obama and Leno with the glaring headline "Obama yuks it up on Leno as economy tanks".
As if was Obama who tanked the economy.
Funny, I live in NYC and I don't recall ever in 8 years ever seeing a picture of Bush or Cheney on the front page of the NY Post with a glaring headline "Warmonger!" "War criminal" "killer of innocents and 4500 Americans!" "Wreckers of the US economy!" "911 happened on there watch!" "Al-Queda in Iraq after war, America now less safe!"
this guy hit the ground running, and hasn't stopped. Buy now GWB had spent 25% of his time in office vacationing.
Now word on that. Not then, not now
Murdoch is a piece of shit. His citizenship should be revoked, and his ownership of FOX terminated, because of his lack of citizenship. It's the only reason he
bought itbecame a citizenme-oww!
Obama hit the ground running BEFORE he was sworn in, while Dumbya had already gone to Dallas in his mind not doing shit the last couple of months.
How dare the US President go on television when there are literally ACRES of brush in Texas to be cleared!! Where are the man's priorities??
/snark off
and bicycles to be rode!.....or fallen off of.
and Chinese presidents to manhandle!
and German Chancellors to be molested and Japanese Prime Ministers to be thrown up on...., wait, the last one was Bush senior...nevermind. All that Bush dignity that was brought to the Oval Office, gotta love it.
And Bush left it in disrepair too I bet.
The naysayers just don't get it.
You don't need to be in bed by nine. It's OK for the president to read and speak english. An intelligent person can concentrate on more than one thing at a time
Politics is ugly
[Deleted. Off topic. The topic of this post is 'President Obama on the Tonight Show.' Sitemonitor]
[Deleted. You didn't get it when I disappeared your comment that was rude, not because you criticized the president, but because you used the Special Olympics as your weapon-Sitemonitor]
So do you.
Before enlightenment - chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment - chop wood, carry water.
Your concern is noted troll.
actually sickening... that the "liberal media" are jumping all over Obama about his bowling story last night, and you could have heard crickets chirping when the Chimp cracked all those jokes about missing WMDs a few years back.
"Nope - they're not under here!"
Insert uproarious laughter while the Chimp snickers...
This country has gone fucking insane.
Before enlightenment - chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment - chop wood, carry water.
That's what you get when you have huge, corporate, non-progressive, dark, media conglomerates lurking in the background of nearly every "news" report and political/economical "analysis" put out to the sheep relentlessly 24/7.
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein
Strange, since there were so many insulting and inappropriate things that dubya said and did when he was in office.
How nice it is to finally have a president who can speak in complete sentences. And, as an added bonus, he has a sense of humour. Well done, Mr Obama.
Yes, indeed - while Chimpy cajoled and made fun of the fact that he lied in our faces to engage this country is a war which has cost now nearly 5,000 deaths of our military not to mention the maiming of thousands and nothing was said about that?
It's time for Republicans to put their money where their mouth is. They were totally mute for 5 years while more americans (and Iraqis) died.
could not agree more. I have come to the conclusion that supporters of the modern day Republican party should be shunned, and deemed irrelevant.
I knew when I heard him say Special Olympics somebody would pick that out. You know what - a NORMAL parent of a special olympic kid would laugh at the joke, too.
And on the REAL topic - IT IS SO REFRESHING TO LISTEN TO AN INTELLIGENT PRESIDENT WHO SOUNDS LIKE HE KNOWS HOW TO THINK AND WHO ACTUALLY THINKS THINGS THROUGH! He may not have as much control we wish he did to move things faster, and he may not do exactly what some people want him to do - but man, he is doing his best and he inherited a pile of shit!
I don't even watch TV anymore.
It was a dumb offhand comment. He was right to apologize.
What is informative however are the comments in the linked article.
Conservatives are beside themselves. They just can't believe that someone could say something so...I don't know..whats the word?Oh yes.
"politically incorrect".It's just sooooooooooo comforting *sob* knowing that *sniff* these conservatives are such strong defenders of political correctness.God bless them.
"To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And,
at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between,
plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing."
This is truth, to me. "
-Jack Handy
He's incredible and has such a wit! His low-key gear is intelligent, articulate, and contemporary - even when he's not trying.
I love that he goes right to the people and jumps over the heads of the talking heads in the mainstream media.
This will work for him every time! He's done more for us in 2 months than Bush did in 8 years. Rock on, Barack!
I'd say it's time to bust the trust and monopolies and begin with the "wavier" granted to Rupert Murdoch. It's time to shut down his Fox News as well as one of his newspapers. He's a sicko and the american people are tired of his recklessness and capriciousness.
I'd say that any GOPster has audacity to lecture Obama on the concept of political correctness. Wasn't it Sarah Palin who was calling Obama names on the campaign trail in order to gin up violence toward him?
How dare this airhead suddenly take offense at anything he says after she littered the campaign trail with feces every time she held a rally? How absurd.
Fact: There is a distinction between the regular olympics and the special olympics. To make something more of this comment than was intended is due to a lack of anything cogent or creative these Republicans have to talk about.
Their focus on this is illustrative of a party with nothing else left to say.
So now Tapper is all askew that someone actually said something not in his talking points manual - TFB! Oh, it must also must be the reason Tapper also turned off access to his Tweet feed for people that actually call him out!! WHAT a lame ass...
This fool is totally tapped out. He's made a fool of himself and his rep will not be reinstated any time soon.
or C Reid...they are all obvious partisans. they couldnt begin to give Obama a break on anything. well, Todd is more approachable than the others. nothing but cynicism and distrust with anything the Dems do. liberal media, their arse.
who claim to be "offended" by Obama's bowling joke are the same ones who thought it was hilarious when Limbaugh made the "White House dog" joke in reference to Chelsea Clinton.
Or the same Republican assholes who said things like "If Obama is elected, he'll just be another black guy moving into public housing."
Shedding crocodile tears for the mentally disabled appears to be the latest thing coming out of the Republican bullshit machine.
I always thought the purpose of Special Olympics was for people, special people, to do their best. What I got from Pres. Obama's remark was "I suck at bowling but I gave it my best". Find something real to write & talk about!
It's not all or nothing.
Now now, Conservatives (or Naivetives as I like to call them) are genuinely concerned about disabled people. That's why they're against medical marijuana, stem cell research, psychological research of lysergic compounds, national health care, and other areas that pose a serious threat of reducing the number of disabled people.
I was born after Kennedy, but I can't remember a president who hasn't been a crook, or a liar, or a figurehead, or another country club guy looking out for his country club friends, or a horrible speaker, or all of them wrapped up in one.
Obama is an impressive, intelligent and caring human being. Which makes it all the more sad that he's been dealt the worst situation in at least the past century.
You have to be looking pretty hard to find fault in his words, and I'm certain all the people who are, never bothered paying attention to a word Bush said.
what is REALLY offensive is the way that Fox snipped Coach K's comments, and the rest of the mainstream media just blindly follows along. Goebbels would have been proud of Murdoch's crew. See below for the COMPLETE quote

He does seem relaxed in that kind of setting, pretty disarming, charming and all, and he did good, but in terms of taking the center spotlight, this seems more Bill Clinton's arena.
THis is the only real way for the president to talk to the nation on a level field.
... but I knew he didn't say it out of meanness, like Bush and Cheney and Limbaugh and other Repugs.
Where was the media indignation when the Vulgar Pigboy was mocking Michael J. Fox? Or when Wanton Boy himself was on his hands and knees "looking" for the WMD? That was disgusting -- and yet not a peep from the whore lapdog press.
Obama's quip was a tone-deaf, thoughtless moment. Lesson learned.
Otherwise, I greatly enjoyed his appearance with the jut-jawed whiner from Beantown.
I agree, it was a lame comment (sorry), completely un-PC. But it was not mean-spirited and he did apologize, so it's time to move on.
After all, whatever it says about him that he made such a joke, it says the same about us ... we got it.
I here all this talk about the people at AIG who ran the companie in the ground should not get there millions because THEY have contracts! fuck them. the repugs are trying to BUST the Union Auto workers contracts. But when it comes to there buds white collor contracts hell we cant bust theres that would not be fair.
2nd, they are saying these CEO's should get Fired for the shit jobs they did. Yes they should. Now in that same light, bush should have his retirement pulled for the shit job he did on America. This guy lied, lied and lied again to get the US into a War of He wanted to frount off his DAD. The CEO's just ran ther companies in the ground and got millions. One thing here, in doing what they did, did any people get killed, did any body get maimed, did any people lose legs, arms, body parts, NO! they just got millions and the people are pissed about. where are the people when we look at what george did. 11 billion a year x 6 years( I think it is more than 11 billion)is 66 billion, and that is not counting the 9 billion that they shipped to Iraq is cash that just is gone. over 4500 GI's dead, over 30 thousand wonded, and how many who will never get this war out of there mind. the pain he caused to familys that have lost there loved ones. So I say he did a shit job on the US and Americans and he does not dersive any RETIERMENT ANT ALL. NO 2.1 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE WITH SERVANTS?????????????????
if all our presidents/leaders were superhuman and never made a mistake, serious or silly. Or, for that matter, if any of us was. I'm pleased that President Obama is willing and able to recognize and gracefully amend his errors. What more can we ask, of him or ourselves?
should be entitiled " Pointing to others' bad behavior to justify Obama's bad behavior"...If he could think and talk at the same time, he never would have said it. I can see the comment coming from an ignorant fool, but never Obama.
In an response to Leno asking'shouldn't someone go to jail?' The president shrugged and went on to explain that what was done 'was perfectly legal'....Frankly I don't think so. I have a feeling there is some serious fraud here. I hope the President is just pokerfacing and really has Holder digging into what Cassano was doing at AIG..the idea 24 people in one division can put the economy of the Civilized World into arrest legally stretches credulity
So some on the right are griping about Obama's reference to the Special Olympics. Didn't Reagan make a flippant remark about Michael Dukakis being a "cripple" during the 1988 campaign? I wonder where their outrage was then.
Cheap laughs always come back to haunt you. He's being held to a higher standard, and should be. But it's not like he did it to hurt disabled ppls pride. He did it to try and seem more human. You're supposed to relax and let your guard down a bit on shows like that. There's always a danger of offending with jokes. He should have left the joke making to Leno... No wait, that could never work. He should have gone on a show that actually has a host who knows how to be funny. Then done alot of smiling and nodding. I was a little put off by the comment, but it's forgivable.
1. I think it's a little disingenuous for the right to cry foul when there was certainly no empathy or caring about kids with autism (Savage, Leary et. al) in their comments about kids with special needs-unless the caring could actually mean getting votes for McCain ticket via the Palin/Trigg route.
2. I didn't like the comment myself. I have a son with autism. Those kinds of comments do bother me, but I am glad that he apologised quickly. He did not mean to offend or irritate parents of kids with special needs, obviously-it was just a poorly thought-out joke.
I hate Duke! They always get televised games-from their home court; the teams they play never get any credit for playing them well-even if they beat the heck out of them-(it's a virtual miracle or some Duke player must've been sick or something); and worst of all we have to hear Dick Vitale go on endlessly about his "Duukies"! Isn't Coach K a right-leaning guy anyway!?
Congratulations to the citizens of the United States for electing an intelligent President. I hope he fulfills the promises he made to the American Public.
Good Luck and Congratulations to Ya'all.
Yanno, I think a mountain is being made out of a mole hill. All he was inferring is that he wouldn't qualify for a handicapped team. He was disparaging of HIS abilities, not the Special Olympic athletes.
