Probably the funniest and saddest moment from the press conference last night: President Obama's response to Ed Henry's 'gotcha' question.

Henry: Why did you wait days to come out and express that outrage? It seems like the action is coming out of New York and the Attorney General's office. It took you days to come public with Secretary Geithner and say look we're outraged. Why did it....

Obama: Look it took us a couple of days because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak. Alright?

Apparently Henry wasn't satisfied when he didn't respond to the question the first time around. It's hard to figure out who was more infuriating -- Chuck Todd, Chip Reid, or Ed Henry. They are the three headed Ghidorah!

Imagine that's all he can come up with after all that journalistic experience eh??? So impressive. NOT!! Obama should have said that he responded a lot quicker than Bush with Katrina. And sit your ass down Eddie.

Obama: "Look it took us a couple of days because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak. Alright?"

This is something different in American politics. It reminds of something I read in a book of memoirs written by Hemut Schmidt, the former German Chancellor. I think it was titled Men and Powers. Schmidt noted that one reason that American policies are often not to well thought-out is that everything in American politics revolves around the news cycles. So everyone feels pressured to come up with responses in time for the supper-time news.

Maybe Obama read that book.

Gotcha questions don't work with thinking caring and smart individuals. But dumb assed reporters think they work with everybody.

RobertD's picture

Henry wouldn't have come off as an ankle-biter if he had let Obama's first answer stand. Instead, he had to get up and press the issue, as though he were really "doing follow-up journalism." In reality, he was seeking a "gotcha" moment to try to stir up some kind of juicy soundbite for CNN, and he got pwned.

To me, it's interesting to see how this is playing on CNN's online comment site. Most seem to agree that Henry looked like a twirp pressing an irrelevant point in order to start a foodfight, and that Obama smacked him down. But there are a lot of "non-news" articles today either from wingnut pundits or about wingnuts proper (Fred Thompson, for Christ's sake? He's still alive?) who are doubling their efforts to defend why they "want Obama to fail."

Easy solution for Obama next time: don't call on Henry, Todd, or Reid. Networks send mulitiple correspondents--like with Ann Compton last night. Go around these asshats and their editors will get the idea.

Schunka's picture

the political suicide of opening mouth and inserting foot was Henry's lot last evening. In his rush to plaster his sorry mug before the american people, he managed to look like a raving moron. It's one thing to ask intelligent questions and not be satisfied with the answer received. Henry never processed Obama's answer before going for the jugular. His career is not toilet water.

LeftandLeft's picture

Just like in previous years, it's just a stupid game. These fuckers truly think that their questions are more significant than Obama's answers. Henry, Reid, and Tapper got together beforehand betting who can get a you tube moment first. No thanks Ed, we saw your ass and don't want to see it again.

Schunka's picture

Tapper, Reid and Henry are a gang of whoring media sycophants. They're like a tandem team of fools. Soon they won't be called on at all and it would be warranted. They can't come up with anything valid of intelligent to ask so they smear themselves with their own feces instead.

As I said, Comedy Central is a better place to get the real news.

At least Ed Henry did the smart thing after the dumbass question. He hid under his seat for the rest of the show.

Did all the tv stations send out their B-team reporters last night? It sure seemed that way. Might as well toss in the woman who asked about race too.

As I said on the previous thread, reporters today, instead of reporting the facts of a story, want to be the story.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

"...want to BE the story."

Excellent. Excellent. Wish I had come up with that!

Prez. Obama slapped down another Faux Noise Dweeb to a roomful of laughter. Great job!

were allowed to ask questions and that's the best they could come up with. Hopefully, Obama will not let them ask the questions next time and call on some real reporters.

I don't think I'd do well politically because I'd be a lot more brutal. If somebody asked me that question my response would be, 'Are you serious?!? Are there any real journalists here who want to ask me anything?'

Of course Fox would be all over that too... "President CafeenMan refuses to answer important questions from reporter he called on."

Aren't these the same premier journalists who waylaid President Bush with tough questions like, "President Bush? How come you're such a gosh darn great American?"?

That quote from the President would make a great t-shirt.

"I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak"

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

TimMcFarland's picture

Knowing what you're talking about before you speak?

That's some change I can believe in!

Why they let these ignornant just say No, crybaby, bedwetters and whiners in.

No

Of course not.

Its not like us bloggers didn't know the scoop within one day or less. Of course, the leader of the free world takes a few days to "know what he is talking about", as if he didn't realize this shit long before any of us.

It was his own appointment that made it happen.

And that asshole still has a job.

Sheople, wake up. Please. Before it is too late.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

Takes the leader a couple of days when the public already knew this crap? ya, right.

"Today New York was wiped off the map when a nuclear explosion happened. The President will make a speech next Wednesday after he has a chance to know what he is talking about."

Can't it be Texas instead?

LeftandLeft's picture

It took the leader of the free world a couple of days to tell you what he thought of this scandal. Soon as Obama fires Geithner you clowns will again crawl out of the woodwork to question that decision too...he'll never win with you people.

RobertD's picture

Exactly.

I'm not sure if what Obama's doing (or Geithner or anyone else in his administration) is right, or if it's even going to work. Personally, the more I learn, the more Mike Meloy's take on this makes sense--"this problem can't be solved." It serves no purpose to give up hope, though, so I won't be going there soon.

People on the left who criticize Obama for being a corporate shill, though, are missing the boat. What's your alternative, seriously? And don't tell me "he should let the banks fail" or "Treasury should seize all the corporations and throw their greedy-assed CEOs in jail," or some damn pie-in-the-sky, untenable position. Everybody knows that someone doesn't get elected to the presidency without powerful, monied interests behind them, and they don't stay there without these same interests, either. It would've happened had it been Hillary, or a Republican, or John Edwards, or any other "viable" candidate. Is it a pisser that Kucinich or Ralphie or some other anti-corporate leftie will never be elected? Of course. But that's the way it is. We have Obama. We could've had McCain. Shit, we might've had Dick Cheney--think about that! I'll take my chances with Obama.

He may not have the situation under control (I don't believe he does, but I don't believe anyone else has a fckuing clue, either), but no one on the left is served by him doing something that will ultimately get his ass thrown out of office. He's the best among many evils, under the circumstances. In order for him to remain there, impacting the issues the left cares about to the degree he can (would John McCain have reversed Bushco on stem cells? Mountaintop removal? Closing Guantanamo? Talking to Iran? And that's just 63 days in), he's got to try to prop up the ones "what brung him." And, sorry folks, that means Wall Street, the banks, the unions, and some of the corporate interests.

Can you imagine how this would have been handled had McCain been elected? Or, god forbid, if Dumbass were still in office? I'll take Obama's thoughtful (and admittedly corporatist) attempt to work this out over a Republican's any time. Because if he's unsuccessful, that's what we'll have. And whining about that won't do us a damn bit of good--no one on the right gives a fuck what we think.

Old Billy's picture

Thanks Robert; I've wanted to say as much to our concerned northern friend for a few weeks now. You put it very nicely.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to live in a utopian society; but this is the real world where not too long ago older and weaker humans were killed and eaten.

RobertD's picture

Well, I think it's fine to be concerned. I am, too, about a lot of things. I'm a teacher, for example, and I'm not exactly doing handsprings over the education proposals I'm hearing come out of Obama's mouth so far (particularly the ideas of greater emphasis on test results, rather than less, and the absolutely noxious notion of "merit pay," which is synonymous with "union busting").

I will fight Obama tooth and nail on some of these issues, but at the end of the day, do I really think things would be better with a Republican in office? Would any of my concerns even be regarded with a tinker's damn? No. And no.

I worked my ass off to get him elected, so I feel he deserves the chance to implement the programs he feels are best and maybe deliver some results--I believed in his ability then, so it's not right for me to armchair quarterback him at every turn. If I don't like what I see, I'll work against him in the 2012 primaries. But that's a while off.

Bob Roberts's picture

Instead of considering whether the President should have taken some time to consult with contract lawyers, economists and others, you'd rather he shot from the hip for PR reasons. AIG bonuses and a nuclear explosion are not comparably. You know this.

You would be the first to condemn President Obama is he came out immediately and said he was outraged about the bonuses and then had no answer when he was asked any follow up question about what the White House could/should do about it. AIG bonuses are not a matter that required an immediate response, other than for pure PR. I'm pleased that the President did take the time to conisder the issue - time which he clearly had.

I have yet to see you write anything positive about the new administration and I've yet to see you write anything negative about the GOP. There's a name for someone like that (on this site there are several, actually).

From the limited amount of morning "news" shows I watched this morning, it appears to me that the press does not understand or appreciate the new way the president will be handling press conferences. There was an huge amount of bitching and moaning about which news organizations President Obama called on.."no NYT, WSJ or Washington Post". He "dodged" the "took a couple of days" question... he uses a teleprompter. OMG how will they ever be able to do their jobs!?!?
What most of us saw was a president that had an actual grasp of the situations and not a rehearsed responce. We also saw a president that used grace and style and not a passive aggression to show the media that he was the boss. It was nice to see an adult at the podium for a change. Now if only the pampered children of the press corps would grow up. Not all of them need to, but the major television corps for sure.

I kind of thought he DID respond to the question in his first answer. Just not directly. And why would he answer such a lame question directly except to point out how foolish the question was. I got the impression he was actually trying to protect the idiot Henry by avoiding a direct answer the first time. He did explain that they had been spending time looking into what actually went down which I thought was a good answer. But when Henry just BEGGED to show the world what a douche he is Obama gave him what he was BEGGING for.

Chuck Todd and Ed Henry are definitely remind me of Prairie Dogs. Chip Reid has a more made-for-TV chiseled bone structure, but still asks a lot of silly questions and sings just like a Chipmunk.

Pet peeve time. When someone is speaking live on tv and it's something interesting, the talking head of the hour cuts it off and says she/he will be monitoring the speech and let the viewers know if there is something we need to hear. Almost as bad as when someone is speaking live on tv and it's something interesting, the talking head breaks in and proceeds to explain to me what I just heard, as though I'm not intelligent enough to understand it for myself.

I'd like to see this White House institute a rule, and follow it -- turn the mic off -- of allowing press people one minute only to ask a question with the president having as much time as he wishes to respond. Those gd egotists get up there and pontificate to show how smart they are and do gotcha's, and they piss me off.

Interviews, not press conferences, are the place where press people can have their say in a conversation with the president if they wish. A press conference ain't where I want to hear smart-asses of any stripe, Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, progressive or fascist! I want a presidential press conference to clarify the administration's position on issues.

After the absurd question from Steve Kroft on “60 minutes” last Sunday, The media could not stop questioning why President Obama laughed!
“Kroft: There is a perception right now, at least in NY, which is where I live and work.
Obama: Right
Kroft: That, um, people feel they thought that you were going to be supportive. And now I think there are a lot of people say,”Look, we’re not going to be able to keep our best people. They’re not going to stay and work here for $250,000a years when they can go work for a hedge fund, if they can find one that’s still working
President Obama chucked at the idea that angry executives on Wall Street who had their pay capped would bold and go find job sat hedge funds. He laughed because it is Funny

Hedge Funds closures last year totaled $84 billion in worth, and more than 1,400 hedge funds were liquidated in 2008. So yeah, it’s pretty funny to think that disgruntled bankers are going to parachute into new hedge funds jobs. (Media Matters, Eric Boehlert Monday, 03/23/09)”

copprbottm's picture

I am not sure that I agree that it should take a couple of days to respond in the manner of outrage, considering the addendum to the legislation came from the treasury. So technically it was a lot longer than a couple of days. And is he outraged at his own people who brokered the addendum and oversaw the bailout resulting in the gov't ownering the majority of AIG to begin with?

Old Billy's picture

That Obama should have at least seen this coming well before it broke on teevee, but the ball was in the AIG CEO's court as to whether the bonuses would go ahead. As far as his "2 day delay" maybe he was looking at options; it's not like he doesn't have other things to do. It's a bullshit question either way. 2 days is a very appropriate delay to make a reasoned, thoughtful response. I don't want a President who would make some knee-jerk response about private sector compensation.

This was Ed Henry's very public "swan song". He looked like a rabid attack dog whose brain had been ravaged by rabies. Obama's retort was priceless and he castrated Ed Henry in one fell swoop.

Obviously, Ed Henry hasn't a clue about what the propaganda he spews...it goes right from his fascist bosses to his lips without entering his brain.

Schunka's picture

When they ship out a rep like Ed Henry whose ego simply cannot resist the gotcha faux journalism, they're asking for it.

I'm waiting on tenterhooks for the Press Corps shuffling to begin. I think that room's population is going to change during Obama's administration. He's already doing a lot of outreach with media other than the MSM. With the slow downslide of newspapers, there's no reason to fill the emptying seats with the same thing. Henry's faux pas is emblematic of the way these guys will end up escorting themselves out the door. Good riddance.

There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits

Schunka's picture

The obvious unuttered portion of Obama's comment was "and Ed you obviously do not EVER use your brain before opening your pathetic little mouth". I think it was the greatest public smackdown yet.

Obama was also tacitly implying to all others in the audience who are playing games instead of being legitimate journalists - be warned: You, too, will get smacked down handily if you continue to participate in gamesmanship instead of asking legitimate questions.

--with disrespectful sarcasm. It's in his tone not in the content of his questioning. I suppose if I looked like Alvin the Chipmonk with high-blood pressure I might be, well, bitter too and cling to my nuts.

Finally a president who is smart, clever, funny, and not afraid to twist the knife a bit - not a lot - just a bit

Unless you ask for it.

I wish he would have said "If this were easy, then you would be up here Ed"

I think I had a similar thought at the time. In fact, I almost thought he was going to say something LIKE that. Glad he didn't; a president should stay above the fray a bit; have some diginity.

but with a lot more subtlety. He got more or less the same bitchslap out of that last line, implying that those who WERE running around obsessively yammering about the problem right away didn't know what they were talking about. Which would include Henry and the rest of the MSM meat-flappers.

Style points for "Ghidorah." I laughed when I heard Obama say this. Great stuff.

There is an advantage to this kind of idiocy. Each time Henry rephrases the question to try and trap Obama into a gaffe or admission, he just gives the new Prez a chance to explain his reasoning and methods better.

Maybe we should feel sorry for them. They've gotten so used to dealing with an idiot who can't speak English and can't hold two thoughts at the same time that they're shooting themselves in the foot constantly. It'll take time before they really get that this guy can THINK, and that he'll use their arrogance and laziness against them.

Study the symptoms not the virus...

It is so damn refreshing and uplifting to finally have a Prez that can speak proper English and actually really knows what he is talking about, without faking it.

Mainstream Media no likey when Obama "attacks" one of their own. He will pay a heavier price than usual for being so short and blunt to an idiotic question from an idiotic news source.

This morning I wasn't the least bit surprised to see a HALF PAGE of ever-dwindling newspaper space in the Los Angeles Times devoted to a photo of the teleprompter Obama used for his brief opening statements last night.

With so many critical issues discussed at the news conference, I wonder what the L.A. Times thought was so "newsworthy" about Obama's teleprompter that it justified a HALF PAGE photo of it surrounded by...fellow members of mainstream media.

Ed Henry tried to humiliate President Obama but got the Thomas Paine Common Sense Smack Down. Now those who still who are loyal to Bush can't deal with an intelligent President. Press Reporters for 8 years had to defend, excuse, explain and even sometimes correct Bush after his Press Conferences. It's easy to look smart when you have a dumb President. Now the Press Reporters will have to read and look like they are intelligent by asking intelligent questions. Many labled Obama by old wives tales. A man of color can't be more smarter then a white man. Those are the Americans who never read. Many of the things we have today that are taken for granted were developed by Blacks. When you stop at a red light say thanks to the black man who created it. When you or you love one gets sick and needs a shot of penicillin to save your life you can thank a black man for inventing it. This is a shock still for many who rank very low in the education department. President Obama not only has to Lead our country but also educate the citizens, Media and Law Makers too. As to those who still have hate for Obama well in four years after he finishes the US Economic Recovery maybe McCain/Palin can get in Office and bring another Great Recession back.

when President Bush was dealing with any crisis? It took 3 days at a minimum before Bush ever even emerged from the White House to make a statement or gesture of compassion.

My partner of 33 yrs is a retired UCLA professor, so I know professors very well. They all have mastered the art of responding to a stupid question with surface politeness, but in a way that lets the smart kids in class know what an idiot the prof thinks this guy is.

The best at this -- or worst, if you're the target -- are law professors. Prof. Kingsfield in "The Paper Chase" was if anything an understatement.

Obama was a law professor, and he's just getting warmed up. For their sakes, the WH press pool had better figure this out fast. For our sakes, I hope they don't. [Mmmmm....popcorn!]

Why does Obama pick these three assholes to ask questions?

Why doesn't he choose Helen Thomas?

Why?

I was truly astounded at the sheer stupidity of Chuck Todd's question to the President...HOW MUCH SACRIFICE..??? The American peole have lost their homes, their jobs, their investments... had their futures stolen from under their noses by crooks and liars....and this moron Todd asks HOW MUCH SACRIFICE...? Some of these "news reporters" only show ignorance while trying to demonstrate their intelligence. And, well, what do you expect from an aging debutante who calls himself "Chip"? T'would be funny if not so sad....

I watched this in a crowded mall with about forty or fifty people standing around one tv. Most looked concerned and hung on his every word. But all seemed satisfied with the President, many expressing approval with almost every response. I know, because after all the GOP media about dropping approval ratings I wanted to gauge the public reaction.

The high point was the "I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak" moment, which all the GOP pundits cited as this awful foot-in-mouth misstep. It played like the knockout. Nothing but raucous cheers and applause for the President.

I used to fear the awesome political skills of the right. But this is the endgame for them. They're up against the brightest and most ambitious democrat in history who wants to be the ultimate president with a public that they just can't lie to anymore.

Their only hope now is that Obama fails. And, seriously, what're the odds of that?

Wow, this is the first time that I noticed Mr. Ass Hole Ed Henry. Had to look him up to see that he worked for CNN.

He looks like a constipated mamma's boy.

This whole thread is hilarious. Obama getting asked a SERIOUS question by the very same media who practically drooled over him during the Presidential campaign is "unfair"?, and THOSE reporters are "idiots"? Anyone here hail from the south side of Chicago? Are you all that naive as to believe that Obama rose to the top of that corrupt political machine because he has SO much integrity and wisdom? He is clueless, and defecating in his pants. He was, and is, an inexperienced radically liberal politician, who excells as a liar, who is now floundering in the "big president's chair" without the south side "good ol boy" network to wipe his ass. By the way, aren't many of his south side cronies in prison now? Like I said, PRICELESS. ;)
