Paul Ryan admits here that the cuts he's going to propose to our social safety nets, or as he calls them "entitlements" will end up giving the Democrats some fodder for political ads against him in the next election, but claims they'll have to lie and demagogue the issue in order to do so.

I think all they're going to have to do is let people read his plan for themselves and run back the recordings of interviews like this one. If he thinks turning Medicaid into a voucher system and privatizing Social Security are somehow going to "save" them, he's been drinking too much of his own Kool-Aid.

WALLACE: Last question, as you look ahead, and a lot of people would say look, the answer is you're not going to get this budget passed. It's really setting up an issue and a sensible debate for 2012. As you look ahead to the next election, aren't Democrats going to be able to say "Look at Paul Ryan, look at the House Republicans. They want to kill Medicare.
They want to kill Medicaid. They want to gut the programs that you depend on." Aren't you playing into the Democrats hands?

RYAN: We are. We are giving them a political weapon to go against us, but they will have to lie and demagogue to make that a political weapon. Look, we don't change benefits for anybody over the age of 55. We save Medicare. We save Medicaid. We save these entitlement programs. We repair our social safety nets and we get our country a debt free country for our children and grandchildren's generation, and we get jobs. We get economic growth.

They are going to demagogue it and it's that demagoguery that has always prevented political leaders in the past from trying to fix the problem. We can't keep kicking the can down the road. The president has punted. We're not going to follow suit and yes, we will be giving our political advisaries things to use against us in the next election and shame on them if they do it.

Sorry Paul, but I say shame on any of them if they go along with your plan.

perhaps when the good people of Wisc. get finished shoveling the dung out of their state house they could raise their voices a bit louder and recall this pretty boy from his lofty perch in DC!

Ape-Man's picture

Shame on the republicans.

Shame, shame, shame, shame, shame, shame.
Recall, recall, recall, recall, recall, recall, recall.

The people of Wisconsin have the right idea.

Come on America, "Show Us What Democracy Looks Like"!
and make us proud.

Let's see just how many Republicans immediately line up and take one for the team before we see how Ryan's proposal plays out nationally. As I recall a whopping 13 signed on in the House when he first floated this boat. My guess is that the middle class has just about had it with getting beat about the head and having their wallets picked if Wisconsin is telling us anything.

itching for a fight,i want to raise my voice,i want to scream for my country....it's coming.

Cheap-labor conservatives support every coercive and oppressive function of government, but call it “tyranny” if government does something for us, the working class, like social security and medicare, or public schools. I say it's game over for Ryan.

The first casualty of republicanism is the truth.
Party politics are not only undemocratic, they are antidemocratic.

KINDLY GO FUCK YOURSELF. You right wing sociopaths are already hated....just you wait. The French Revolution was started by people like you. The United States will be facing that very soon.

I remember first reading about the French Revolution in history class, thinking, "What does the 'reign of terror' accomplish?" - during the time when France's streets ran rivers of blood from all the people guillotined.

But with this newest wave of Republicans I can understand the sentiment now. Imagine one of those head-chopping machines set up on Wall Street; only then. ONLY then, would the assholes who are trying to turn America into a 3rd World Nation finally stop the assault on the working class.

Some people only listen to the sound of other rich people's heads landing in a basket. It's sad to say, but if not for violent threat they will continue to hurt this country at the expense of everyone in the lower 99% of the population.

DaveZ's picture

If you continue to attack Social Security you will ALL be sent packing. The threat doesn't just fall on Paul Ryan.

when they talk about laying all this debt on our children when that's exactly what they have been doing. It's our children ans us who have been paying for their tax cuts and wars since before Reagan.

Ape-Man's picture

So true. Black is white. Up is down.

The same way they commit shameful atrocities and try to turn it around.

we are in a vacuum of integrity when it comes to Republican voters. They're the reason black is white and up is down.

The Last Word's picture

"Look, we don't change benefits for anybody over the age of 55."

Translation: Old people vote, and even if they didn't, their kids would see and have to pay for our draconian changes, so we hide the changes today, waiting to implement them until it's too late to do anything about it.

"We save Medicare. We save Medicaid. We save these entitlement programs."

Translation: We hate these programs because they require our donors to pony up, but we need to say something about them because they're wildly popular to virtually everyone else. So we propose something altogether different than Medicare, slap the Medicare label on it, and point out what a good job we did saving it.

"We repair our social safety nets and we get our country a debt free country for our children and grandchildren's generation, and we get jobs. We get economic growth."

Translation: We refuse to acknowledge the simple solution to the mess we caused, i.e., raising taxes on the wealthy.

They're now called the Cheap Labor Conservatives. Follow the link for an explanation.

Cheap labor conservatives want to drive down the middle class until we're just like a third world country.
We have to rise up to defeat them before they succeed.

Thanks mikerush. Heres a snippit:

* Cheap-labor conservatives don't like social spending or our "safety net". Why. Because when you're unemployed and desperate, corporations can pay you whatever they feel like – which is inevitably next to nothing. You see, they want you "over a barrel" and in a position to "work cheap or starve".

* Cheap-labor conservatives don't like the minimum wage, or other improvements in wages and working conditions. Why. These reforms undo all of their efforts to keep you "over a barrel".

* Cheap-labor conservatives like "free trade", NAFTA, GATT, etc. Why. Because there is a huge supply of desperately poor people in the third world, who are "over a barrel", and will work cheap.

* Cheap-labor conservatives oppose a woman's right to choose. Why. Unwanted children are an economic burden that put poor women "over a barrel", forcing them to work cheap.

* Cheap-labor conservatives don't like unions. Why. Because when labor "sticks together", wages go up. That's why workers unionize. Seems workers don't like being "over a barrel".

* Cheap-labor conservatives constantly bray about "morality", "virtue", "respect for authority", "hard work" and other "values". Why. So they can blame your being "over a barrel" on your own "immorality", lack of "values" and "poor choices".

* Cheap-labor conservatives encourage racism, misogyny, homophobia and other forms of bigotry. Why? Bigotry among wage earners distracts them, and keeps them from recognizing their common interests as wage earners.

Thanks to Conceptual Guerilla.

My goodness yes it would be so very dreadful if anyone actually told the public about the destruction that the Republicans are wreaking on our society. People might actually put a stop to it, yanno, so the corporate media will provide ample Republican cover till it's too late.

Paul1968's picture

Quote Paul Ryan"

"We're not going to follow suit and yes, we will be giving our political advisaries things to use against us in the next election and shame on them if they do it."

It really sounds like Rep Ryan does not want to be held accountable for his actions. Does he really think that those under 55 are not vested in Social Security? Does he really think that if he slashes Social Security for people, even though they are under 55, they will not be angry?

I have not heard Paul Ryan advocating the reduction of Congressional pensions. Congressional pensions pay a lot better than Social Security. A Congressman only has to serve 5 years to vest in that pension. Try collecting Social Security after only paying in for 5 years.

Social Security is not a current budget problem. The Social Security Trust Fund is one of the top purchasers of United States Securities, which finances deficit spending. What Republicans really do not want to do is pay back the money owed to future Social Security beneficiaries.

glogrrl's picture

They just want to get rid of it AND the debt they are supposed to pay back. Nothing could be more transparent.

“The greatest evildoers are those who don’t remember because they have never given thought to the matter, and, without remembrance, nothing can hold them back,”

Blue Mark's picture

Every time the Paul Ryans' out there say we have to make painful cuts to 'entitlements' and that everyone has to make sacrifices and 'share the pain' - just ask them to name a single example of a sacrifice being asked of those who have reaped almost all the benefits over the last decade as the majority of us have seen our real wages and standard of living stagnate or fall. Give us just one example where the winners of the last decade are asked for anything in return.

Just one example of sacrifice that is being asked from the economic elite. Just one God Damn thing.

They're paying more to protect their families from us than ever before.

gump's picture

This coming from an entire ethically bankrupt party. This man needs to STFU and quit with the oil subsidies in his hair. Shared sacrifice? Not that any one hear needs the advice but, wake up people.

is intended to be a factual statement

fjwhit's picture

I disagree with his proposal but at least he has put Medicare. Medicaid. Social Security and Defense on the table. Let us have an honest discussion. I expect my Social Security and Medicare to be capped and my age for full participation to be raised. Good for him

Blue Mark's picture

Social Security is not in jeopardy - except from conservative "reformers".

Medicare is underfunded, but 'capping it' makes no sense - that would only make it more expensive. The cure for Medicare is expanding it to insure more people - especially younger people.

It is typical of conservatives to "cure" problems by making them worse - thus proving that government is incompetent and that they are therefore right in destroying it.

Ape-Man's picture

Social security is doing just fine.

Republicans just want to cripple government so they can drown it in the bathtub. What better way to ensure that corporations have an endless supply of cheap labor.

Ape-Man's picture

Cheap-labor conservatives like Paul Ryan don't like social security because when you're old, less capable, and desperate, corporations can keep you working and pay you whatever they feel like, as in next to nothing. Do you want to work into your old age and get paid next to nothing while you do it, fjwhit?

Ape-Man's picture

The only things that need to be on the table are wasteful defence spending, tax evasion loopholes by big business, outsourcing, prosecuting banking fraud, and tax cuts for the super rich. The other things are essentials for the well being of society.

ron's picture

you're new here but if you are going to frame a comment, you have to use all the words.

"I expect my Social Security and Medicare NOT" to be capped and my "BENEFITS" for full participation to be raised." The FICA cap should be raised or removed completely.

ron's picture

a reply to fjwhit.

EP3's picture

It's interesting that they don't want to change things for people over 55 because those are the age groups that are gonna cost the entitlements so much money. Once the baby boomers are gone, technically the system will be in equilibrium.

Ape-Man's picture

Cheap-labor conservatives have hated Social Security and Medicare since their inception. They are talking the long view because they would lose their base of mostly older voters.

Talk about lying about the issue. There is no way our children get a debt-free country unless we completely renounce the public debt. Ryan is lying.

Yes, and in order to do that, we are going to have to start with eliminating wasteful defence spending, tax evasion loopholes by big business, outsourcing, banking fraud, and tax cuts for the super rich.
