Just because Sotomayor had to brush up on her English skills while in college, that does not mean that she doesn't have the intellectual rigor for the Supreme Court. In fact, she had the chops to succeed in college while she improved her English, and clearly she has a great command of the language now.

When I was in my high school German classes, I had a friend there who'd immigrated here from Iceland. She told me that she was very annoyed when she first enrolled at the high school because the counselors kept wanting to place her in remedial classes (Math, History, etc.)

In actuality, she's a brilliant girl and she arrived in the States already speaking Icelandic, Danish, and English.

If speaking English as an oh so superior first language guaranteed high intelligence, we wouldn't be saddled with Dubya, would we?

Often - in the adult world - references are made to some parts within some of the better known popular books, TV shows, etc. - something about wicked witches, whales and white picket fences - I am totally clueless to some of the references. Maybe I should read some of those books, but I have other things to do. (Hänsel und Gretel and Tischlein deck dich und Knüppel aus dem Sack I know about). In court hearings where often references are made and analogies used, it would definitely be advantageous to know about those things. She did the smart thing.
