Palin's 'Drill Baby Drill' Vs. Oil Spill

Cenk Uygur on Miss "Drill, Baby, Drill" Palin and her lastest tweet where she says she's praying for the residents of the Gulf Coast and that she understands their fears because her family lived though the Exxon Valdez oil spill. As Cenk notes, Sarah, you lived through Exxon Valdez and all you learned is "drill, baby, drill".

Now it's "pray, baby, pray" Cenk.

Maybe if she had more spillage

She'd have less trouble with in-laws...

But I think it should say "Drill, Baby, Drill!" and accompanied with one of her trademark winks.

Makes even more a mockery of her.

How many people do you think will be making money from this disaster before too long? And I am not talking about those who will at least try to clean it up? Jinx.

they'd sit on it for awhile while fundraising and vacationing, then hand out large, no-bid contracts to their cronies to do little or nothing to deal with the problem.

This woman's willful ignorance is astounding.
She couldn't care less about anything she spews. She's just in it for the money. She's like that oil gusher. Mindlessly spewing toxic bullshit.

One thing we cant take from this, one lesson learned, is that we must build more nuclear power plants. As many as possible. I'm sure they will all have only the best shut off valve, should anything ever go wrong. Which it wont. Because the Nuclear industry told me everything is safe.

SDGreg's picture

from this oil spill and the recent coal mine disaster is that in a weak regulatory and enforcement environment, little is safe. Even though the technology is better than when building the last generation of nuclear power plants, would a new generation of plants be more prone to a major disaster absent stringent regulation and enforcement?

Right now, what is happening in Plaquemines Parish where there are two important wildlife refuges threatened by the oil, those fishermen you saw in video clips earlier in the week -- the ones who were supposedly being "trained" by BP to lay out booms -- are sitting around doing not much. It has the distinct odor of a cluster fuck: The water is presently too rough for small boats. That's part of it. But a bigger part of it is that the fishermen think BP is trying to screw them. BP is offering $1500 a day for fishermen to use their own boats and crews, which the fishermen say won't even cover their expenses. Also, BP is asking any fisherman who takes the $1500 a day to first sign a liability waiver which the fishermen don't trust. If it weren't such a tragedy, it'd be funny.

Edited to add: And Bobby Jindal, who balked at taking stimulus socialist money, has done a 180. Instead of looking to that free marketing BP to solve this problem, he's now hoping the commies in Washington will bail us out of this mess. BP is okay with that too.

SDGreg's picture

Lowball the fishermen knowing they won't have any work otherwise because of your negligence. Time for the Justice Department attorneys to get uber aggressive.

Any direct aid to states with Republican governors that shunned stimulus money should involve joint photo ops with Obama. Don't let these hypocritical d.....bags off the hook when providing necessary assistance. Get video that can be used against them if they try to backstab.

states that will be effected by this feel about Ronald Reagan's gem abut the scariest words being, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help"
I thought the free market solved everything because ...you know...an oil spill would effect profits so the corporate genius's that make the big bucks would never allow that to happen.

When when their Christanic treason against us causes half a trillion in economic and ecologic destruction, these insane fuckers, the Christanic piles of traitorshit's response is "We'll pray for you unwashed little masses affected by the Christanic gods' wrath which nobody could have forseen or protected against," all while these fat cat ****ss are completely isolated from the real American citizen's lives outside of their bubbles.

The Alaskan Idiotrod.

But looking forward and not back might be worse.

From September '08:

As Congress prepares to debate expansion of drilling in taxpayer-owned coastal waters, the Interior Department agency that collects oil and gas royalties has been caught up in a wide-ranging ethics scandal — including allegations of financial self-dealing, accepting gifts from energy companies, cocaine use and sexual misconduct.

. . .

But two of the highest-ranking officials who were subjects of the investigations will apparently escape penalty. Both retired during the investigation, rendering them safe from any administrative punishment, and the Justice Department has declined to prosecute them on the charges suggested by the inspector general.

. . .

One of them is Ms. Denett, who oversaw the Denver-based royalty-in-kind program from Washington. The report contends that she manipulated the contracting process to steer the consulting work to Mr. Mayberry, her friend and former special assistant.

. . .

[T]he Justice Department has [also]declined to prosecute [] Gregory W. Smith, the former program director of the royalty-in-kind program . . . . He retired in 2007.

. . .

The report accused Mr. Smith of improperly accepting gifts from the oil and gas industry, of engaging in sex with two subordinates and of using cocaine that he purchased from his secretary or her boyfriend several times a year between 2002 and 2005. He sometimes asked for the drugs and received them in his office during work hours, the report said.

Rampant corruption, but hardly anyone goes to jail, these companies are allowed to keep doing business, and effectively regulating energy companies is still secondary to: Drill, baby drill.

absolve someone of liability? Go after their retirement and/or put them in prison.

And before we allow any more offshore drilling, clean house of all the GWB appointees and those they hired.

I'm sure Palin suffered terribly when the Valdez oil spill occurred .Only in America could a complete airhead like this become a national figure , in the news and quoted almost every friggin day as if she has brains and knows anything . I'm so proud to be an American these days .

Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .

... that most of these disasters are a result of unfettered capitalism?
Precautions and safety measures are thrown to the wind to maximize profits? That it's time to get more government controls in place with power to shut down companies where danger to the public exists until repaired?
1. Mine safety.
2. Those oil rigs would not have been allowed in Europe or Brazil.

If you need funds to pay for essentials, you have a revenue problem
If you need funds to pay for frivolity, you have a spending problem

has tanked, and then will ride the reemergence of BP when they suffer NOTHING because of this? They must be forced out of business. BP and the vulture investors.

Midtown Maniac's picture

The Kansas City Star reports that Palin addressed a multitude of 3,000 (out of a metro of 2M in KC) in Independence and told the crowd not to give up on drilling for oil, we need it for independence.. I guess there's something there, giving credence to the saying that the biggest lies are built on a sliver of truth..

Ed Schultz's guest, Papantonio, says there is a fail-safe method of protecting from these disasters if only Cheney would have demanded the same as other countries but that darn Cheney let the lowlife oil people do what they wanted.. somehow fail-safe and human don't go together to me..

that's one of the reasons I am opposed to nuclear of any scale though smaller does seem better-still not good.. one thing, an 'oopsie' that devastates the Gulf of Mexico for years and years pales before a nuclear power 'oopsie' that can affect us for eons, for much longer than there've been Hammurabi's laws..

But I don't hear many, if any, talk about scaling back our hyper-consumption.. back in the day, hippy friends loved the idea of living simple so we could work less and self-express more..

Of course we have to get there from here which probably means some drilling (with state of the art safeguards) will be necessary- as will other compromises, why should we expect the rest of the world take on this energy risk for us and why should we be be dependent on others' retrogressive regimes, though in this world of global capital that may be a moot point..

But without the idea of minimizing consumption as well as environmental risk, we will be in this same mess again and again.

Who actually holds office? WHY are the Young Turks talking about Sarah Palin?

I love this claim. She lived near strip malls, not with any concern to the coasts.

Mike The Riverine's picture

One of the best life lessons I learned was that anytime some mook like Palin says "Don't Worry About It", that's the time to START worrying.

Oh well, at least the energy companies got their money's worth out of the payoff money she got(and apparently, is still getting).
