Mitch McConnell: We'll Work With President Obama When He Comes Back to the Center
Mitch McConnell says after the election Republicans will be more than happy to work with President Obama on issues they agree on as long as the president is willing to "come back to the center". Or in other words, as long as he's willing to govern like a Republican. Yeah, sure you will Mitch, just like you have for the last two years, right?
I'm not sure who McConnell thinks would believe this empty rhetoric since it is the same thing they've been saying since President Obama got elected while they've played Lucy pulling away the football time, after time, after time. Needless to say John King couldn't be bothered to ask him. He did ask him how he's going to deal with some of these teabagger candidates if we're unfortunate to see them get elected and McConnell did his best to dance around the issue and tried to pretend that the Republican Party would be happy to privatize and eliminate Social Security and Medicaid. Unfortunately those are probably some of the only issues Republicans would be happy to help President Obama with -- destroying our social safety nets -- that and tax cuts.

The last decade has created Republicans that act like spoiled children. "Bipartisanship" to them means they get their way and the Democrats can pass some "non binding resolutions" if it makes them feel better. "Center" means "where they stand on the issues".

Just musing here but it seems that something has changed in America since 2000.
One of the things I found disturbing about the Bush years is how loyalty and patriotism were no longer centered on the nation or the constitution but rather on the president. Bush seemed to govern with a "I am the state" attitude and his followers seemed to agree. The idea of "loyal opposition" went out the window.
I know some will say this has always been the case but I'm speaking as an ex-conservative Republican. Even during those days I would never have accused liberals of being traitors because they didn't support Reagan. Yet since 2000 patriotism was wound up with following the fuhrer.
Since 2008, some conservatives seem to be talking like they live in an occupied country, in ways you never heard during the Clinton years. Their loyalty has shifted from the nation to their political leaders. Having lost the ability to comprehend "loyal opposition" while they were in power, they've lost the ability to play that role now that they're out.
Talk of violent rhetoric, rebellion and secession as well as the inability to negotiate in good faith with your opposition for the good of the country, are all symptoms of being unwilling to pledge loyalty where it should be: with the country and centered on our constitutional values.

One other thing to keep in mind is that when the Republicans say that a majority of people do not l**** the Health Care Reform they may be correct. What they fail to say is that a huge % of the people who do not like it don't like it because it is not strong enough. They do not like it because it is not "single payer." But I know that won't happen because the president really is trying to work with the scummy republicans. Mitch McConnell and the caucus he runs don't deserve to be at the table with people who are trying to solve the country's problems until they themselves show that they are able to make political compromises and work in good faith with the president and democrats to solve the country's problems. But that won't happen because the change that is needed is not the status quo that they represent. They simply do not want to have any part in bipartisanship, and they have clearly demonstrated that over the last 18 months. No. Mitch McConnell is not in the position to set terms of engagement. Too bad he can't be totally shut out of the process until he and his caucus change their behavior. Yeah, that will happen when hell freezes over. But, we've got time.
