From our friends at Newshounds, Mike Huckabee treated his viewers to this lie-packed bit of anti-abortion propaganda on this weekend's edition of Huckabee on Fox News. The forced birth crowd over there is determined to keep the culture wars going with their war on women's reproductive rights.

It's downright infuriating that the Obama administration and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius gave them some food for fodder with this one.

Mike Huckabee Lies About "Plan" B While Pimping Anti-Abortion Movie:

As the mouthpiece for the rabid political right, it's not surprising that Fox News is America's pro-life newsroom. You won't see Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood on Fox; but you will see Fox hosts and guests who hate women's reproductive freedom. Fox can be proud of how its top rated Bill O'Reilly contributed to a climate of fear and hatred in which abortion doctor, George Tiller, was assassinated. Bill also did his pro-life duty in presenting a parade of guests who support congressional attempts to defund Planned Parenthood. But while Bill and the other Fox pundits don't seem to, outside Fox, take an anti-abortion activist role, there is one Fox pundit who does and that's Mike Huckabee. He's up to his eyeballs with the "pro-family" anti-women's reproductive rights crowd that wants to provide "personhood" rights from the moment of conception. Mike, who "proudly stands" with homophobic and anti-Islamic hate group leader Bryon Fischer of the American Family Association, lauded the failed Mississippi personhood initiative. And now, he's promoting an anti-abortion rights movie for whih he provides an introduction. In a shameless act of self-promotion and anti-choice activism, Huckabee used his latest show to pimp the movie while telling a shamelss lie about the emergency contraception "Plan B." If Fox viewers are misinformed, this is why.

After telling a folksy story about how he "told" his little grandchild about how he would vote for people who would "protect little guys like him before and after he was born," Huckabee segued into his upcoming forum in Iowa which will include the premier of a new anti-abortion film, "The Gift of Life." After he described the film as "refreshing and uplifting," he asserted that this film will remind candidates and voters that "treating every human with worth and dignity is still essential in selecting a leader." This reverence for life, Hucakbee asserted, is even more important since the FDA recommend that over the counter sale "of a drug that kills a developing baby." He noted that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius is continuing the policy of requiring girls to be 17 if they are "purchasing this what has been termed abortion in a bottle." (He didn't say that a doctor could still prescribe the drug to these girls.) He then went into the standard "pro-life" canard that girls need parental consent to take an aspirin at a school. (A girl of any age can purchase aspirin at a drug store). He continued with the anti-abortion misinformation with a comment about how the government "was on the brink of letting her purchase a pill that will kill her unborn child with neither your consent nor your approval."

Go read the rest, but as they noted, that movie Huck was pimping was brought to us by none other than Citizens United, the same group that led to the disastrous Supreme Court ruling that's made the money pouring into our political coffers from corporations that want to buy off our politicians even worse. Lovely.

No matter what Obama did it would have been food for fodder. No matter what happened. Don't blame Obama for what the lying right wing say and do. They don't need Obama ass an excuse for them to lie and cheat and steal.

at least they could have done the right thing.

That is a big part of what makes this admin such a walking greek tragedy...

Well on this particular issue i can understand what happened. There are a lot of parents who do not want their 15 year old daughter to be able to buy Plan B without being consulted. For the record I am not one of them but I do understand the concept. If I had a daughter or two in that age group I might feel differently. The kid can still get the "drug" but they just need a prescription or a friend who is 18.

There is plenty more that Obama has done that he needs to get a hard time for. I can understand how this one went.

universal access to contraceptives?

One gets a much different understanding of this action from that alternative vantage.

CTHULHU 2012 "Why vote for a lesser evil?"

And many love to use the fear of pregnancy to try to enforce abstinence. When that fails many of those same parents don't want their children to have access to safe abortions.

But that fifteen year old daughter has rights too - constitutional rights that will hopefully be enforced against this administration through the courts. In the meantime, Sebelius and her boss get to play politics with yet another essential freedom.

Funny how they didn't try to take condoms off the shelves.

Doctors pretty much agree that conception begins at implantation, not egg fertilization. Women excrete about 30 to 50 percent of fertilized egg on their own either before or during implantation anyway -- without Plan B. Far be it for Huckabee to let actual medical facts get in the way of a good extremist fairy tale. SHAMELESS.

Chicago-gal's picture

It's not in the system long enough to affect the uterine lining at all according to the latest research.

All it can do is prevent ovulation: no egg, no baby.

If it worked by preventing implantation, you could take it up to a week and a half after sex, since implantation doesn't happen for 10-11 days after fertilization. Since it works by suppressing ovulation, you need to take it as soon as possible after sex and up to 72 hours later because that's how long sperm can live. After that, the sperm are dead and it doesn't matter if you ovulate.

Fuckabee is a LIAR as is the MO of most all Repukes, evangelicals and neo-cons - especially when the subject has anything to do with: marriage, sex, abortion or homosexuality.

The sad thing is, Mike knows in his heart that he's a liar and a bigot - and you can see in his eyes, he's really, really afraid he won't be called by Jeebus to join him in heaven...or wherever.

Chicago-gal's picture

Of a developing fetus. There's no possibility of implantation, because there's no possibility of implantation.

Plan B prevents ovulation. That's it. If the egg is already out there, Plan B does nothing to it. It is not in a woman's system long enough to affect the uterine lining. The reason you have to take it within 72 hours is that's how long sperm live. Yes, you can have sex on Friday, and then ovulate on Sunday and THEN fertilize that egg.

If it worked by preventing implantation, you could take it up to a week and a half after sex. It takes a fertilized egg 10-11 days to make down to the uterus to implant.

Plan B is contraception. It is in. No way an abortifacient.

Of course, having some knowledge of sexual reproduction would help dispell this nonsense, but FOX is aimed at people who come from abstinence only education wastelands. They probably believe every sperm is a sweet little homunculus just waiting for a fertile spot to grow.

Chicago-gal's picture

*Theres no possibility of implantation because there is no possibility of fertilization.

There's no developing anything. Plan B suppresses ovulation, so there's no egg and no way for the sperm to fertilize anything. There's no further development because nothing ever starts.

lyris's picture

But the righties don't even want contraception.

In the words of Randi Rhodes, they love the fetus, but hate the child.

Talking heads on FOX do what talking heads on FOX do: talk. That's all they can do.

It's not like Huckabee, or FOX, has the power to simply ignore science and impose their religious beliefs on the rest of us. Kathleen Sebelius has that power. And she used it - just like the last administration. And she still has that power. That's the real problem.

Who really cares if she gave "fodder" to Mike frkin Huckabee? This isn't about who wins a talk show argument. It's about the next sixteen year old girl having to choose between hoping she didn't get pregnant last night or hoping daddy won't slap her around when she asks his permission to get birth control that scientists agree is as safe for over-the-counter sale as the condoms down the aisle.

Corruption favors the wealthy.

lyris's picture

The real problem would be if ten to seventeen year old children have a reaction to Plan B, the company gets sued and Plan B is discontinued.

No medicine is SAFE, anyone can have reactions to anything, and if a young girl who doesn't want her parent(s) to know she's having sex, she's not likely to run to them for help, and could die.

We need to concentrate on having more clinics like Planned Parenthood available to these young girls.

Wasn't allowing bush into the White House bad enough?

"It's downright infuriating that the Obama administration and HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius gave them some food for fodder with this one."
I'm not sure you understand the concept of food for fodder.
Actually allowing Plan B to be available OTC without restriction would be food for fodder. Had they done that the right wing would have freaked out, and this story would have been 24/7 for every right wing outlet from now till God knows when.
What they did was exactly the opposite. This became a non-story, which even the hardcore right is having difficulty ginning up outrage for. Really, the storyline for cons that they should be upset because the Obama administration didn't loosen the regulations on Plan B isn't very compelling, but it doesn't mean they won't try to use it.
It seems to me that you are not much different than the right wing, in that everything Obama does infuriates you.
I mean if you were upset because you felt it was a bad decision, or just done for purely political reasons, I can respect that. But you are mad at the administration for doing this because it is giving the right an issue to talk about, when in fact it is limiting the right's ability to exploit Plan B as an issue. Your position makes no sense, unless you always try to find a reason to disagree with Obama's every move, or simply don't know what the specifics of the story actually are.

lyris's picture

Do you really think that if Kathleen Subellus didn't put a restriction on Plan B that it wouldn't be fodder for the lame brain righties? It would have been more fodder.

has been available OTC in most provinces/territories in Canada for a couple of years now.
I've worked in a drugstore for more than five years.
I have not seen more than the odd person purchase Plan B. When I do, it's more likely to be someone who is no longer a teenager.
So, no great upsurge in purchasing Plan B by teenagers. Hmmm.
What I do see, on a regular basis (I work at night) are teens & adults purchasing condoms. That, to me, is a very good thing.

lyris's picture

I disagree. Even aspirin can be dangerous to some people.

Although only anecdotal, it is good news that you see more kids buying condoms. One possible unintended consequence that I see from making Plan B as available as Aspirin is kids deciding that since they have Plan B they don't need to use condoms, thus increasing STD transmission. Also, while I'm sure it's safe when used properly, I wonder how safe it is if misused. Face it, teenagers are complete dumbasses, and there would be an onslaught of kids misusing this product, that is if the price of Plan B came down substantially. That's why I think a reasonable compromise would be to have it available, but behind the pharmacists counter, so that kids would have to talk to the pharmacist to purchase it. Which would give the pharmacist a chance to tell the kid the proper way to use the product.

I wish they would quit referring to anti-abortion people as pro-life. Most of the political right wing supports war and the death penalty. Hardly pro-life, especially when they also deny medical help and welfare support to the pregnant poor who chose to keep their child.

Nobody LIKES abortion. If the Religious Right would agree to allow comprehensive sex education and birth control OTC for minors. The need for abortion would be reduced 75% or more. I lived in a Very Conservative Bible Belt Community. Their rate of teen pregnancies was over 35% and most of the Boys were Nowhere to be seen. If you want to teach your children abstinence fine, but please give them an alternative. Which is worse teen pregnancies and abortion, or Birth Control.....I realize this is Preaching to the Choir on Crooks and Liars but Yahoo is Broken.

I heard someone describe Congress as a bunch of prostitutes. That statement is slanderous to all prostitutes and should be stricken from the record.

lyris's picture

I agree with you on sex education. We had that back in the early 1960's, but the science teacher who was new, was fired for teaching it.

But I part ways on having young girls being able to buy Plan B without a doctor's care as no one can honestly state that none of these girls would never have a reaction to it.

I posted before a little of the reactions I had to some meds. I almost died back in February and I was in the hospital when I was given this medicine.

I do firmly believe that there should be more Planned Parenthood through out our country to help these girls, so that if there is a reaction they have someone to call immediately for help.

I also would like to know how can a ten to twelve year old girl afford to buy it?

I am one of those who can't tolerate many medicines. I almost died last February from a treatment for Crohns Disease and then I had reactions to other Meds I was prescribed by my doctor after.

I can't imagine allowing any young girl who doesn't want her parents to know she's having sex being too scared to do anything to save her life dying from this pill.

That would be opening up law suits to Plan B, and then having Plan B discontinued.

No one can honestly state that there will never be a bad reaction to that pill, not without being a liar.

I cringe when I hear people, including Democrats, speak of Gomer as "a good man," &c. He is an evil toad. So is anyone who uses religious dogma to make millions by preaching on TV denial of some segments of society their rights under the constitution (women who want abortion and the sexual minorities are obvious Shuckabee targets). In a very real sense, Shuckabee is un-American and anti-Constitutional. I do not know at what point this cracker evangelical uttered the line, but I think it was right about the time that he got bumped from the Repug primary lineup for nominee, losing to McShame. Gomer actually told an audience that as president he would issue an executive order abolishing the wall of separation between church and state because the Constitution should be interpreted by Christian family values. He obviously thinks, as do many of his ilk, that the wall of separation is a "myth" invented by secularists and non-believers. It wasn't. It was a founding father's elaboration on the First Amendment in essays or letters, and one doubts that the establishment clause, reasonably interpreted, can be interpreted any other way.

When the "strict constructionists" want things going their way they decry Roe v. Wade as "wrongly decided" and like aspersions. I am aware the the opinion employed a poetic "penumbra" vision of a right to privacy inherent in the amendment, but this translates to the commonly heard NASCAR stupidism that the First Amendment couldn't possibly permit abortions until the third trimester, the amendment doesn't even mention "abortions"! It's about like saying that the King James Bible allows one to say "I want English to be the official language of the U.S. If it was good enough for King James, it's good enough for me." You cannot win with these troglodytes. But you are damned if you quit trying.

What is alarming is that these bumpkins know no history. A recent study showed that atheists were many times more likely to know what is actually in the Bible: a rational person in the 21st century upon reading carefully and fully analyzing the writings can only come away amazed at all the contradictions, blood lust, denunciation-of-sodomy in one section and praise for father-daughter incest in the next, and like reasons to think the book about as rational as Mein Kampf. Once again, as Saint Christopher is wont to put it: Religion poisons everything.
