Mike Allen: He Shut His Mouth and When You're Al Franken That's Not Easy to Do

h/t Media Matters
The Politico's Mike Allen seems to think that if you're a comedian, you can't stop yourself from making a fool of yourself in public. I get so tired of this sort of rhetoric about Franken because it completely ignores the rest of Franken's biography. Al Franken is a comedian, but he has accomplished a lot of other things during his life as well which I'm sure the likes of Mike Allen are aware of, but do their best to ignore, and instead decide to belittle him as Allen did here.
The other thing that bears noting is that most successful comedians are also wicked smart, as is the case with Franken. Those in the beltway bubble would do well not to challenge or mock professional comedians. They'll find themselves on the wrong end of a punch line and regretting it if they do. Personally I'd be happier if the Drudge Report, tabloid reporters from The Politico STFU and quit making asses out of themselves on television rather than our newest Senator Al Franken being quiet.

Was it for Monica?
..a comedian who was a Republic, er, I mean Republican.
Case in point: The late Sonny Bono (ex of Cher).

Thank you for reminding me about former Congressman and former Governor Iowa, Fred Grandy.
Washed up has been comedian, Dennis Miller who became a spokesperson for the wingers when his standup career went to crap and his shtick wouldn't sell on Monday Night Football. With that nasally whine and that supercilious, condescending attitude and his delusions of some kind of innate superiority, he represents right wing "humor" about as accurately as you're gonna see it.
Anybody ever see that stupid vampire movie he made?
what people like this say? I always wonder why people even bother watching cable news political discussion? They say nothing original, they push actual thoughtful commentary and analysis to the side for conventional logic (that is usually nonsense, only conventional logic because it benefits the power centers that own the media and the two parties) and they have a villager outlook on most of everything. They are too shut off from the outside world to realize how ridiculous most of what they say is, if they did they'd be too embarrased to do as they do.
if nobody watched them?
PS. And what about TiVo? ;-)
Seems every reporter has a bug up his or her ass ever since the President called on a blogger at that news conference. They just can't get over themselves.
I would put my money on Franken any day when it comes to who is wiser, him or this pip squeak.
If Franken was an old movie star who made movies with a chimp, I'm betting they would love him. Or if he had once been part of Cher's music duet they wouldn't have any problem with that either.
You got that right! If we didn't know what pompous ignorant asses reporters were before, Obama talking to a blogger brought all their asshattedness out for public display. And they are looking so hot.
Even as I write this, some tv fool is showing a tape of Al Sharpton dancing. His point was to say that Jackson's dancing was so good and Sharpton looked bad dancing in comparison(?) Then he had to admit Sharpton wasn't a bad dancer, then he fumbled his was out of the segment.
This is news?
And they're surprised that bloggers are looking good in comparison? Really??
They were talking about the Franken win on PBS news the other day, and the guy being interviewed said something similar, but he added that besides being a comedian, Franken is known for being an attack dog for the liberals, and that he never went on the attack while waiting for this outcome. The unstated premise was, Franken made himself look senatorial during this period of gestation.
(Afterall it took nearly 9 months).
And from some things I heard he also ignored some advisors and played his campaign straight, stuck to the issues and gave the process of campaigning, the voters and the office the respect it all deserves. His campaign was very disciplined and dignified, unlike the 8 month tantrum thrown by Dr Teeth (pushed forward by his GOP backers. I'd lay down cash that he wanted to quit ages ago and now has an ulcer from the embarrassment alone).
... something Mike Allen has never even tried.
Gods, what a putz.
Franken is the kind of guy who can cut your throat verbally and make it funny at the same time. Hell yes, they are afraid of him. I wouldn't want him pissed at me. He's quick and exact.
On PBS, they were saying Amy Klobuchar can be pretty funny.
I can imagine:

I was in the VA hospital yesterday, and had a late lunch in the canteen. Once I saw they were no longer playing FAUX but CNN I sat close to the TV whilst masticating.
I think it was the Rick Sanchez show, and all they were talking about was the Michael Jackson story, with very brief governor sanford mentions, commercials, and more about Michael Jackson. Meanwhile they had a crawler on the bottom of the screen from people's twitters asking them to stop with all the Michael Jackson crap.
I'm all Michael Jackson-ed out too. Every station seems stuck on the story. I think it's because they are lazy and the Jackson stuff is just handed to them.
because they don't give a... Jack-Son! :)
They are going to pick over Jackson's flesh and bones just the way they did Anna Nichole Smith. Plus it's easier than getting off their asses and actually reporting news.
Carl Bernstein was on Morning Joe this morning and he took the white house news reporters to the wood shed for whining about things at the white house briefing yesterday rather than going out and finding the stories that need to be reported.

I find this more inspirational than Michael Jackson's music:

He hadn't even made a recording since god was in diapers. His last "hit" was '91.
It might be unfair to call MJ a 'has-been', but he certainly was a "Usta-Wuz."
Yeah, whenever I hear his music I'm usually at a gay bar on '80s night.
Seriously. Look at these heels! PLATFORMS RULE!
don't stand for it. create your own frame. you know, an accurate one.
wit:
1. The natural ability to perceive and understand; intelligence.
2. Often wits Keenness and quickness of perception or discernment; ingenuity: living by one's wits. b. wits Sound mental faculties; sanity: scared out of my wits.
3. The ability to perceive and express in an ingeniously humorous manner the relationship between seemingly incongruous or disparate things: “ Wit has truth in it; wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words ” Dorothy Parker b. One noted for this ability, especially one skilled in repartee. c. A person of exceptional intelligence.
Idioms: at (one's) wits' end 1. At the limit of one's mental resources; utterly at a loss. have (one's) wits about (one) or keep (one's) wits about (one) 1. To remain alert or calm, especially in a crisis. [Middle English from Old English; See weid- in Indo-European Roots.]
Synonyms: wit humor repartee sarcasm irony These nouns are compared as they denote forms of expression that elicit amusement or laughter. Wit implies intellectual keenness and the ability to perceive and express in a diverting, often pointed way analogies between essentially dissimilar things; humor, on the other hand, suggests the faculty of recognizing what is amusing, comical, incongruous, or absurd and using it as the basis for expression:
“ Humor is, as it were, the growth of nature and accident; wit is the product of art and fancy ” (William Hazlitt). Repartee implies a facility for answering swiftly and cleverly: “ framing comments . . . that would be sure to sting and yet leave no opening for repartee ” (H.G. Wells). Sarcasm is a form of caustic wit intended to wound or ridicule another: “ Sarcasm I now see to be, in general, the language of the Devil; for which reason I have, long since, as good as renounced it ” (Thomas Carlyle).
Irony is a form of expression in which an intended meaning is the opposite of the literal meaning of the words used: “ A drayman in a passion [a rage] calls out, ‘ You are a pretty fellow, ’ without suspecting that he is uttering irony ” (Macaulay).
you have got one bad case of bad breath, dude.

Mikey hates everything!
Thanks YSB
Short memories as well: Ronald Reagan, Jesse Ventura, Sonny Bono, Ahnuld, Clint Eastwood, Fred Thompson...
the others certainly do.
to being the mayor of what basically constitutes a retirement community for the wealthy in Northern California.
I simply listed several celebrities that were elected without panic from the right.
There was plenty of hand-wringing on both sides of the aisle over Ventura's election. And Clint Eastwood ran for mayor mostly so he could get the zoning board to vote his way on something. Plus he's a talented actor and director, and generally spends his time applying those talents.
They just don't like us since we elected the first black president and the first comedian. All they can come up with are future tabloid stars.
Funny how nobody ever mentions 2004 in Ohio.
Our comedians have more substance than their CEOs. I'll take Al over Mitt Romney annnnnyday.
The incident with Mitt's dog on top of his car was kinda funny for everyone but the poor dog.
the story was an appropriate ice breaker, but also that people in the audience seem to think it was a funny story as well.
Certain strains of conservatism and sociopathic behavior seem to go hand in hand...
It's very telling what tickles the funnybone of conservatives. They seem to have a real mean streak in their humor. Remember Clayton Williams(R) from TX? He thought a rape joke was a real knee-slapper. John McCain suggested that Janet Reno fathered Chelsea Clinton and told the joke when Chelsea was a 12 yr. old in the White House.
I found nothing particularly disparaging or disrespectful of Al Franken about the comments by Todd and Allen. The negative framing served as a backdrop to the fact that they found Al Franken's demeanor in this situation to be senatorial.
?
Factual reporting would stipulate that you say what you mean:
"Franken appeared confident and senatorial as he responded to word of the court's ruling."
Biased opinion-based crap:
"God, I'm surprised Franken kept his mouth shut, I mean, he looked really senatorial."
They must be thinking of Glenn Beck as a comedian that can't keep his mouth shut and doesn't have anything important to say
Yeah you, shit for brains. He did keep his mouth shut. That's the fricken point. He stayed out of the limelight, He didn't attack Coleman. Unlike the wrong wings tactics.
Creating your own news again I see. asshat.
I will say this for Mike, he realized he stepped in it pretty fast and did a very nice back paddle.
I have to give him 7s. Just for the effort
Another goofball senator:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPjSmvW7WDk&fe...
You have to be a pretty smart person to first go to Harvard, not the end all be all, but it is quite an accomplishment and then have a successful career writing on the, at the time, most cutting edge comedy show.
He scares them.
Yes he does "Right" out of their wits. ;-)
Another pasty faced, stupid looking bald headed GOP asshat. Franken will so destroy you dipshits.
Those in DC -- mostly the pundit types (like Allen) are SO trying to make DC the next HOLLYWOOD! Yes, comedians and actors are STUPID, and should NOT be in politics -- unless, of course, they are Republicans and are named Reagan, Bono, etc.
Ditch diggers? Great! Go into politics! All blue collar work is great! (Of course, WE are immune from this.) The lower-class, the better. For Democrats, of course.
It tickles me to watch these freaks. They are SO out of it, yet think they are KEWL. Yes, honey, we all envy you! hahaha
The republicans had their chance with Ms Palin and they also could maybe have had Joe the Plumber. Sadly, I heard that Joe did an interview recently and when asked if he might run for some office, Joe told them he asked god if god wanted him to run and god said no.
It's pretty bad when your own god doesn't have confidence in you.
God only said NO after "thunderous" laughter.
Perhaps a being that has no beginning and no end just doesn't give a rat's ass as to who runs for a political office.
"God does not play the Sims."
Just like the rest of the politicians.
... so what is your point?
what would I be thinking about Junior Senator Franken.
Republican. "Okay were going after this skirt wearing sissy boy and were not gonna let up. Dig up some dirt on this guy."
Democrat. "We're going to need to hip this guy to the fact that to get along he's going to have to go along."
I would probably would want Franken coming over to my next party.
Then I would be wondering... How'd the hell did I get to become a senator?
Hi Al, congrats, welcome to the club. You got it made. If, and I mean if, you play your game right.
I think Al may be a game-changer. He may become a great statesman... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
that's all. anothe intelligent man stand among the clowns and the sniping begins. I hope Al really does show them up.
what a crew. Who can even listen to their ridiculous commentary?
What do they know? Nothing!! I, or many of those who comment on C&L, could do better analysis of ANYTHING than Chuckie or Mikie. This is the kind of crap that gets on the air when you have to fill up the 24/7 TV news cycle.....unadulterated dribble.
Plus, I saw about 5 minuets of Scarborough this a.m. - he just makes me want to puke. How did he ever get that job? How did he ever get elected to Congress?? No wonder the American electorate is so stupid.....having to listen to fools.
would be a good comedy if they were funny. You know funny haha!
republicanism is a mental illness!
Thats because Reslug morons like him only spew shit from their ignorant mouths constantly.
The most unintentionally funny thing about this nonsense is that these turkeys clearly don't understand comedy any better than they understand policy. Good, consistent comedy requires careful control of content, inflection, and timing.
"Good, consistent comedy requires careful control of content, inflection, and timing."
And rubber chickens...gotta have rubber chickens dude!

that was pretty funny wasn't it?
WASN'T IT?!
I liked it!
I got more!

Just once I'd like to see one of these so called journalists in the MSM catch a GOP mouthpiece making a joke and say to him/her oh you're a comedian too - I guess we can't take anything you say seriously - thanks. Then cut them off and segue to something else.
(ain't going to happen I know - well maybe Rachel would :))
People can say whatever they want. He's Senator Franken now.
And therein lies the rub. Mike Allen and Chuck Todd are Villagers. Al Franken is an outsider. He was not a professional politician running for another political job, he was an educated, funny, and genuinely REAL person who thought he'd like to make a difference. Yes, I read his book ("Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot"), in fact, it opened my mind and made me more politcally active. Thanks, Al.
I often wonder how the MSM Villagers would react to Old Abe the Railsplitter running today. Perhaps the greatest man of his time would probably be laughed off and discounted by the Villagers who cuddle up to the lobbyists and career politicians of today.
I'm sure this dickload Mike Allen thought it was perfectly legitimate to have actor Fred Thompson in the Senate, singer Sonny Bono along with Goofer from the love boat on the house
