Michael Steele bids Arlen Specter good riddance. So much for that big tent.

Steele: For the senator to flip the bird back to Senator Cornyn and the Republican Senate Leadership, a team that stood by him, who went to the bat for him in 2004, to save his hide to me is not only disrespectful but down right rude. I'm sure his mama didn't raise him that way.

Steele is being disingenuous here. Sure, a few of Specter's Senate buddies helped him, but the nutfudge wing of the GOP -- Toomey, Club For Growth, the rest of the Hitler Youth -- openly called Specter a traitor and worked tirelessly toward his political destruction. So Specter owes loyalty to nobody except his constituents -- who have been stampeding to the Democratic party in staggering numbers.

RickBeagle's picture

the numbers are staggering, something like 200k swapped from repub to dem last year.... Holy heck, that is a lot of people in one state to swap.

as for steele pretending that specter was treated well... must i remind this loser that specter received death threats and petitions from outside the state for his ouster? what an ugly ugly group of people you have become.

Honestly... the Gop/Republican party is going to be in the darkness for a while(possibly a good long while) and Specter wants to remain relevant. Its a career move. He's 79 I believe, so time is running out on him.

I would like to hear from Specter whatt he GOP told him after he voted for the "STEM" bill. You can bet dollars to doughnuts they told him that they were not going to support him in the next election (primary).
And Michael Steele is such a stand up guy too. I wonder if he asked Limbaugh if it was ok to issue that statement.

Who am I gonna believe? Arlen Specter, who clearly stated his reasons for the change, and limited his "blame" to those of the PA electorate who would show up at the next Republican primary, the wingnuts, or Michael Steele, whose own career depends on those same wingnuts and whose track record shows us a lot of nothin'? "Left-wing voting record" indeed! That's the distortion of the "if yer not with us, you're agin us" redneck fearful.

So this morning's e-mail brings the following from said Michael Steele:

Dear _______

I hope Arlen Specter's party change outrages you. It should for two reasons:

First-- Specter claimed it was philosophical--and pointed his finger of blame at Republicans all over America for his defection to the Democrats. He told us all to go jump in the lake today.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe a word he said.

Arlen Specter committed a purely political and self-serving act today. He simply believes he has a better chance of saving his political hide and his job as a Democrat. He loves the title of Senator more than he loves the party--and the principles--that elected him and nurtured him.

Second --and more importantly--Arlen Specter handed Barack Obama and his band of radical leftists nearly absolute power in the United States Senate. In leaving the Republican Party--and joining the Democrats--he absolutely undercut Republicans' efforts to slow down Obama's radical agenda through the threat of filibuster.

Facing defeat in Pennsylvania's 2010 Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record, and an end to his 30 year career in the U.S. Senate, he has peddled his services--and his vote--to the leftist Obama Democrats who aim to remake America with their leftist plan.

As recently as April 9th, Senator Specter said he would run in the Pennsylvania primary next year as a Republican. Why the sudden change of heart? Clearly, this was an act based on political expediency by a craven politician desperate to keep his Washington power base--not the act of a statesman.

His defection to the Democrat Party puts the Democrats in an almost unstoppable position to pass Obama's destructive agenda of income redistribution, health care nationalization, and a massive expansion of entitlements.

Arlen Specter has put his loyalty to his own political career above his duty to his state and nation.

You and I have a choice. Some will use Specter's defection as an excuse to fold the tent and give up. I believe that you are not one of those people. When Benedict Arnold defected to the British, George Washington didn't fold the tent and give up either.

He grit his teeth more determined than ever to succeed. That's what I'm asking you to do today.

Join me in this fight by making a secure online contribution of $25, $50, $100, $500 or $1,000 right now to build our army of supporters and defeat Democrat candidates like Arlen Specter in next year's elections.

Stand with me. I need your support today.

Sincerely,

Michael Steele

GOP archconservatives like Pat Toomey and Peg Luksik have been lusting after Specter's seat for years; both have run against Specter in primaries. Michael Steele terms it a defection, but it wasn't; the ultra right wing planned to oust him in 2010. As for the "party and principles that nurtured him," it was once possible to be a moderate or even liberal Republican and still be welcome in the Republican Party. Look at Everett Dirksen and John Heinz. But that inclusion is no longer possible in the GOP, and the blind party will keep listing to the right, alienating even more Americans and even responsible Republicans as it continues to self-destruct.

Paul's picture

Dearest Michael,

Fuck you.

Today's GOP is a genetically and or psychologically deviant mélange of morally and ethically defective mutants, miscreants and kamikaze loyalists who are crashing and burning all things Republican.

They are the figurative buzzards and hyenas fighting over the last scraps of a carcass riddled with maggots and festering clumps of putrefied viscera.

They are the opportunistic parasites whose very existence is and always has been dependent on sucking blood from the engorged bellies of alpha predators.

The prevalence of fear, paranoia and irrational hatred in today's GOP represents the antemortem gasps of a doomed species struggling to survive in evaporating pools of their own toxic waste as they mercilessly slice and dice one another in futile attempts to become the biggest fish in an increasingly smaller and smaller pond.

Specter was one of Bush's number one supporters. Specter will be another republican blue dog to add to their growing number we are electing on the democratic ticket. How many Blue dogs in the senate now 16 and counting.. These 15 or 16 senators that vote as a block can give the republicans the majority on any issue they wish. In the House the Blue dogs have lost their numbers to control it like they wish for now , but what about tomorrow..

Specter is a War hawk , Specter like all the blue dogs was for illegal spying , cutting social programs , giving our tax money to the criminal war contractors... We have become a nation of idiots with a memory that only lasts for a couple of days.. We support and listen to Fox "?news?" and other corporate-republican "?news?" media and then we bitch about them and the propaganda they say... If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to see or hear , as far a one is concern it never happen.....

Specter as well as the other republicans which have run and some elected on the democratic ticket ,, looks like another Rove's action... To run republicans on the democratic ticket and if a republican loses running as a republican they win as a democrat one the democratic ticket..

Our party in now center right to say the least.. Listening to Rachel's show last night Rachel had a person from the Progressive Democrats on her show.. This person spoke as if the progressive group were thrill and falling on their knees that Obama talk to them and finally gave them permission to see him...
Of Course this comes months after greeting & listening to the Blue dog republicans and any other group which wanted to meet with him...

Obama the president is not Obama the democratic candidate and the policies I voted for.. Of course this was not McCain or was it... We might as well call Obama a Blue Dog Republican along with the rest that have been elected on our democratic ticket..

The democrat voters have become their worst enemy now.. They are excepting corrupted polices which just 5 months ago they would raise h... about and funding , supporting and voting for republicans which no longer have the true values which once were that of the democrat party and for the American citizens..

We have been taken over by this Global Empire and the people no longer have any power over our government policies and our wealth and economy is being transferred to the Global Empire at an alarming rate..

Third world countries of yesterday are the ones which have our manufacturing plants and jobs that we have/are paying for this Global Empire to transfer there on a daily basis while cutting ones in America...

mr. steele,

The american people ARE lefty's, NOT fascists like the neocon goons you represent. The american people want your corporate fascist state dismantled, not sustained. If anything, they think Obama is too moderate.

The fascist group of plutocratic morons (CFG), defeated two moderate Michigan republicans in primaries with anti-tax nuts; who were then crushed in the general election by democrats, in what were former GOP districts. So, buy all means, keep up the good work.

You people really need to move to an island, so your demented brand of idiocy can be isolated.
