McConnell: I'll Work With Obama on Taxes -- As Long as He Keeps All the Bush Tax Cuts in Place
Here's your Republican bipartisanship folks. From CBS's Face the Nation, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tells Bob Schieffer that Republicans will be happy to work with President Obama on taxes, as long as he does everything they want and keeps the Bush tax cuts for the rich in place.
And extending them for two years would be just as bad or worse than letting them expire because it just gives Republicans another chance to keep beating this drum for the 2012 elections as well.
SCHIEFFER: And good morning again. Well, the Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell joins us today from Louisville, Kentucky. Senator, I want to start by giving you a chance to make some news here. You want to extend the bush tax cuts for all income levels that expire this year. You want to extend them permanently. The President’s opposed extending those cuts for the richest Americans, but in an interview to be broadcast on 60 MINUTES tonight, Steve Kroft asked the President if he’d be interested in extending the Bush tax cuts for those upper-income Americans temporarily as say two years. Presumably, in order to extend the tax cuts that he wants for lower-income Americans. Let’s just-- first listen to what President Obama said.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA (60 MINUTES): Hopefully, we can agree-- agree on a set of facts that-- that leads to a compromise. But my number one priority coming into this is making sure that middle-class families don’t see their-- their tax rates go up January 1st.
STEVE KROFT: Do you want to make a counterproposal to him right now?
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: I think I’ve -- I’ve already invited them over to the White House.
SCHIEFFER: All right, senator. Does that sound like a starting point for serious negotiations? Can you do some business with the President on the basis of that?
MCCONNELL: Sure. We hope to do business with the President on a number of things. I-- I think the issue here is whether you want to raise taxes on small businesses in the middle of what most Americans think is a recession. I and all of my members, think it’s a-- it’s a bad idea to-- to do that. I do sense some flexibility on the President’s part. And we’re happy to talk to him about it. But let me make sure everybody understands what we’re talking about here. These aren’t tax cuts, these are tax increases. Tax increases in the middle of a recession. This so-called upper-income thing diverts people away from the following fact.
If you do that, you raise taxes on seven hundred and fifty thousand of our most productive small businesses, which represents fifty percent of small business income and twenty-five percent of the work force, at a time when job creation is just bumping along. And we’d all like to get the private sector going again. We really think that’s a bad idea. But look, we’re happy to talk to the President about that and-- and all the other issues that he has on his mind.
SCHIEFFER: Well-- well-- I-- I would just want to get back to what he said because what he seems to be suggesting is that he might go along if you do those upper-income tax cuts temporarily, say for a couple of years or so. Is that something that you-- that you would consider?
MCCONNELL: We-- we don’t raising taxes on small business is a good idea. And you can’t do what he’s suggesting you might do without having a small-business tax increase. Small business is the biggest job generator in America. But we can’t negotiate it this morning. But our view is, don’t raise taxes on small business. We would-- we would rather not do it at any time. In fact, I’ve introduced the only bill that would make the current tax rates permanent. But certainly you wouldn’t want to do it--
SCHIEFFER: But you’d at least--
MCCONNELL: --in the middle of an income slowdown.
SCHIEFFER: From what he said, you’d at least be willing to start talking about that.
MCCONNELL: Well, we’re-- we’re willing to start talking about getting an-- an extension of some kind--
SCHIEFFER: Okay.
MCCONNELL: --so that taxes don’t go up on anybody.

"10 Republican Lies about the Bush Tax Cuts"
remember???
someone hasnt been paying attention.
Perhaps a few thousand of us should mail this to McConnell. AND while you are doing so, ask old plastic face how many tax dollars were spent on his gawd-awful face lifts.
responsiblity--YOU LIE TURTLE--You give a rats about the American people--just about protecting yourself and your corporate owners@!
What a schmuck@!
Let them all expire !
When they become human!
Until then you can go chenny yourself GOP!
I'll happily pay a little more for sanity in government.
...;)

I'll deal with you only if you give me everything I want.
That's not agreeing to a discussion; that's blackmail...
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Thank you for saying that so that I didn't have to say it.
I don't know what the popular consensus on the definition of "compromise" is, but I'm pretty sure it's not "give the other guy everything he wants so I can get something I want". That does indeed sound like blackmail.
Way to Milquetoast your way out of *that* confrontation, Barack...
not have the power but only the bluster and arrogance..The turtle is such a pompous a$$! Hope after 26 years he comes to the table to do some legislation.. he has yet to do anything for other than Corporations and big business!
Makacious and venal old southern white guy!
That's a demand for unilateral surrender...because if you've already bled someone dry by successfully coercing or manipulating him or her into giving you everything you want, what incentive do you really have to deal with them after that? If you know you've already got someone right where you want him, what incentive do you really have for giving him any quarter at all?
Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.
when you said this:
"Our goal is to make Obama a one-term president."
And you put conditions in for working with him in bi-partisan fashion.
You talk like you're the Majority Leader and not the Minority Leader. I hope Durbin or Schumer puts you in your place, cause I don't trust Harry Reid to tell you to drink a six pack of STHU.
as do the Democratic congress critters.
"Our goal is to make Obama a one-term president" -Sen Mitch McConnell
Someone should paste that on every one of the Democratic congress critter's desks.
Schumer?? Fat chance!

I'm one of Chuck-The-Schmuck's constituents, and he really doesn't deserve the kind of credit you're giving him. I refused to vote for him this time around -- I knew that he'd probably win anyway regardless of whether I voted for him or not, but I couldn't in good conscience consent to his return to DC as a representative for my state.
Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.
"Compromise" means doing something the way we say it should be done. Let's play a game, Mitch! This game is called "Senate Floor." You be Pat Leahy, and I'll be Cheney.
'nuff said.
F*ck you you f*ckin' f*ck
all it takes is all of us
The sad part of this farce is that a conservative bought and paid for Obama is going to give republicans the complete (already paid for) cooperation on tax cuts and every other issue. I will never vote for Obama again.
Barack and his party had a clear majority and shit all over the progressive majority. Fuck you Democrats for no public option, for letting DADT continue, for funneling even more money into Afghanistan, for not restoring Habeas Corpus, and the hits keep coming! Let the tax cuts expire like you let your constituents languish, make America pay for it's already received goods and services.. Land of the "Free", Home of the Pathetic and Lazy! Teabagging morons bring the Orange ass Neoclown to be speaker of the house, I'll bet you 3/4 of them don't even know we have two wars going on right now. America really is all about sacrifice, we sacrifice anyone else but our corporate power structure and their monetary interests! Fuck you Barack Obama, you are as spineless as you are elegant.
And Obama will do exactly as he is told by the GOP. For the sake of bipartisanship, you understand.
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.
George Carlin
wtf, who made mcconnell
president?
Obama
His 'compromise' is as genuine as someone who starts an apology with "If I offended anyone with..."
OK McDickface you get your tax cut. Now fix the god damn economy!! NOW! Your Teabagging friends are going to drop you like a hot rock when you and your filthy rich friends have not put Mama and Daddy Teabagger back to work in three months. You and your ilk said you would get the economy back on track if your shitheads were elected. WHERE IS MY JOB, asshole? How come my 401K is still worth half as much and my house is underwater. FIX IT!
Where is the quote from Harry Reid saying how this is the time to fight, fight, fight?
I'm sure he could squeeze off a harshly worded letter while Mitch McConnell's cat entertains himself with Harry's nutsack.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
Let the tax cuts expire Obama. You and your party of ass-kissing morons have done enough damage! Tell the Republicans and the people who voted for them that fiscal conservatism is king!
Even conversing with these sub humans puts your car in reverse (I think you know what that means, right?).
We'll see if the President has the ba**s to do the right thing. I've basically given up hope, but if he can do this, I'll cut him some slack going forward.
Any negotiation of the Bush Tax Cuts is just another round of Obama and the Dems negotiating with themselves to the benefit of the GOP.
Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.
"what's the matter with Kansas?".....
and now....
Besides all those mid-air collisions between farm girls, their dogs, Witches and Superboys?
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Let the tax cuts expire. They were meant to be temporary and the time has run out.
I doubt that 750K small business owners make more than 250K and again it is only the amount above 250K. A smidgin when it comes to running a businesses. Also if no law is passed the tax goes back to where it was voted on to go back. It will take a new law to lower the tax again. That is a tax cut. He should not be allowed to inject his own BS terminology into the discussion. A tax cut is a tax cut. Decreasing revenue increases the deficit. Just because you say the opposite should not mean that it is accepted as fact. I'm tired and disgusted with this jerk getting his way.
That 250K is also PROFIT. Not gross income. $250,000 after paying employees and electric and gas and all the other write offs.
I run two small businesses. One is a DBA and one is an LLC. If you have a small business that provides you with more than $250K in personal income and you're not incorporated you are a moron.
Tax law in this country is very generous to small businesses of all kinds. The only reason they pump this crap into the conversation is to get "Joe the Plumber" wannabe's all worked up. If they were already business owners they'd know this is pure propaganda.
The problem is not getting that message out. Joe the Sixpack Plumber will only hope to make $250K a year. This is the Dem problem in a nutshell... getting their message out. First; When the Republicans say "small business" they are not saying small income business. They are talking about small amount of people who could be making HUGE amount of $$$$$$$$. The Koch brothers have a bunch of small businesses that make millions of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ a year but the brothers are the only employees. Second; Republicans do not give a rat's ass about real small business people. Of course the Dems can't seem to get that message out.
Just more bullshit threats from the asswipes that put us all in this terrible recession and they will certainly do it all over again. That's just what rich, uncaring Reslugs do when in power.

piecesman-sized bags of shit. I'm sick of them.me-oww!
The definitions of "compromise" according to the WordNet at Princeton University...
As a noun:
* a middle way between two extremes.
* an accommodation in which both sides make concessions
Please note...strictly speaking, compromise technically requires both sides to make concessions. When only one side makes concessions, that is not compromise -- that is surrender, which is not the same thing at all. If you want Obama to surrender, by all means say so -- but don't call it compromise, and don't insult our intelligence by pretending that's what you want. If you're genuinely willing to compromise, Senator...then exactly where or on what are you prepared to make concessions toward that end? And please have the decency be specific -- the election was last week.
Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.
I voted fro Obama, but he has demonstrated he is unwilling to stand up to Republicans.
Boehner concedes only three percent of small businesses affected by extending tax cuts
If the Dems had a lick of sense, Nancy would bang the gavel "sine die" and a $1.05 Trillion chunk of the deficit spending would instantly vanish on her watch. Then Obama could turn to the "Tan Man" and say "OK John, Nancy left you with a balanced budget, now don't come back here with any deficit spending in yours."
The Dems in the House can all sit back and relax or even vote for keeping all the Bush Tax cuts. Then once it gets to the Senate a little filibuster would save them Dems from having to vote against it and save Obama from having to veto it. When the taxes go up it'll be the Repubs fault for not producing the tax cuts that they promised.
The top upper income earners ARE NOT THE SAME as "America's small businesses." Period.
If owners of businesses are actually bringing home TAXABLE income that would be affected by the expiration of the top-earner tax cuts I can guarantee that they are not the "small businesses" that Republicans like McConnell are trying to make us think they are.
Not to mention that the tax package Obama is pushing specifically gives tax cuts to actual small busniesses - tax cuts that directly incentivize spending/investing IN THE U.S. and/or hiring IN THE U.S.
Giving tax cuts on personal income for rich people in no way shape or form boosts the U.S. economy.
In fact the rich do NOT spend their tax cuts!: http://donklephant.com/2010/09/13/moodys-rich...
In fact, the Bush tax cuts spurred OVERSEAS business investment: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/9e6a18ec-c019-11df-b77d-00144feab49a.html
Why, why, why do reporters and anchors continue to allow Republicans to trot out this "tax on the rich is really a tax on small business" bullsh*t.
That is the way it has always worked... Bipartisanship means that things are done the way Republicans want. Compromise means that things are done the way Republicans want.
