John McCain embraces his former running mate Sarah Palin's "death panel" rhetoric on Sean Hannity's show last night and throws in a little fear mongering about socialized medicine for good measure. I want to know when McCain is going to give up his government health care since he thinks it's so scary.

HANNITY: Senator, your running mate, Governor Sarah Palin, came out with a very hard-hitting posting on Facebook, which I agreed with especially in light of what we've seen in Great Britain and Canada and elsewhere.

And then we had the Obama administration that brought back this book that the Bush administration had gotten rid of, "Your Life, Your Choices." They go through a series of scenarios with veterans at VA hospitals and nursing homes, which basically says, well, you know, you don't want to be a burden to society, to your family.

Is that the kind of death panel that maybe people were afraid of when they read pages 425 to 430 of the House bill?

MCCAIN: Yes, but I think they're also concerned because they're well read, they're well informed, they're knowledgeable. They know what's happening in other countries where basically there is a rationing of health care particularly when people reach a certain age as to what kind of treatment they can and if they can get it.

The incredible delays in acquiring that kind of care, so I think it's and not just that, I think it's the example of government-run health care in other countries which is not — America is not ready for that.

You can feel it...they're getting desperate. It's time the administration put the Repubs on the ropes about this. Obama has the ear of the American people right now. He needs to come out like a damn prize fighter, call out BY NAME the rebup leaders who are slinging this nonsense around the right wing air waves. It's a desperate and disgusting tactic of misinformation and misdirection. I wish Obama would just come out and say "We're essentially extending Medicare to all". Force the Hannity's of the world to try to smear Medicare instead of some made up health care plan they "report on" to instill fear in their viewers. I keep seeing right wing trolls talk about how "no one has read this bill!!!!" (extraneous exclam. points theirs) It's obvious they are the ones who haven't read it, otherwise they wouldn't swallow the tripe the fox feeds them every day. MMM...doesn't that taste good? Now take this gun and shoot yourself in the foot.

start landing some serious punches.

Not going to happen though.

He IS from the Chicago school of hard knocks...
he may surprise us yet.
That said...I ain't holding my breath.

Niques's picture

because the alternative frightens me.

If the spin/lies/terrorist attacks of the GOP work to kill this bill, there will be nothing to stop them, and truth and honesty will be a thing of the past.

This is a pivot point in our history.

Hechicera's picture

already needs to be killed. It doesn't offer reform, without the public option. It mandates everyone buy health insurance, penalizes you for 2.5% of your gross adjusted income on your tax return if you don't have it. It also penalizes businesses for not offering insurance with a "Pay or Plan" plan.

And, as of now, it has no public option for an affordable choice! Even the house compromise has provisions that will force the current watered-down public option to charge premiums as high as private.

If you are too poor (defined as 400% of the poverty level) to buy insurance, you will get a government subsidy to help you with that mandated insurance purchase. There are no controls on the prices that insurance companies can charge. There are rules to make them cover more, which they can then charge more for, and the government will subsidize them.

See what they did there?

Paul's picture

and it's a POS. This is nothing more than page after page of a privaization scam. the so-called public option is a joke; it isn't an option to join medicare, it's an option to buy pooled insurance at rates that are artificially constrained so as not to undercut the insurance racketeers' rates. Every limitation placed upon the insurance companies, is later nullified with loop holes.

The politicians who are crafting this rip-off should be ashamed of themselves. The majority of members of congress really do not represent the People any longer, and they don't seem to care or understand that they don't. The institution is broken, corrupted. This whole fiasco can be taken as the penultimate argument for solely publicly funded campaigns and the barring of contacts with elected officials outside petitions or public hearings and meetings. The lobbyists and corporations have corrupted this institution almost beyond all hopes of salvage.

HR-676, as a matter of justice, and as a line in the sand.

Niques's picture

has it? Couldn't Obama come back with a version of expanding Medicare, like we all want, and tell them to suck it up?

Hechicera's picture

What would be real reform is so far removed from what this bill offers, legislature would be better off starting a new bill. (HR 676 is already a better start, yes to Paul).

Since both proposed bills (house and senate) have the same insidious provisions, the reconciliation will be resolving things like:
- what is the sliding scale for subsidies up to 400% poverty
- is 150% or 133% of povery too poor to be forced to buy in
- is the 2.5% percentage of income penalty capped
- how small a business is too small to avoid the penalties
It doesn't matter what you pick, it's still crap.

Obama *has* to threaten to veto this if the public option isn't still there and a real public option. The "public option" in the bill is not what those words imply.

Honestly, I'm not sure we can trust Obama to veto. He was right when he said the public option was the only proce control in the original (not watered down) bill. If the progressive caucus in the House can't kill it (for not having a real public option and just being government subsidies left in it) ... we the people, taxpayers, small business owners, people who can't get affordable premiums now .. we are all toast.

Niques's picture

this is a pivotal point. Either Obama shows himself to be just another corporatist, or he stands up to the pubs and bluemutts and says "You guys had your chance. Now it's my turn."

Is it at all possible he has an alternate (or maybe HR676) waiting in the wings?

Hechicera's picture

HR 676 was introduced in the 2007-2008 so it pre-dates Obama. It is a House bill too, so he in the Senate had nothing to do with it.

Perhaps he has an alternative. I hope he has a strategy. He was lukewarm on health care reform on the campaign trail iirc, but got talked into supporting public option. It may come down to what advisers he listens to after the final bill's text is known.

The fact he backed off public option, then echoed the "level playing field public option" phrase in his last address is depressing. That is the specific wording the Blue Dogs use for the watered-down public option.

Paul's picture

He is a corporatist to his core, a willful and ardent servant of the elites. That his rhetoric does on occasion sound progressive means nothing. His actions speak louder than his words, and those actions have never been progressive or liberal. It appears to me that his assigned role in all of this is to create a fog from behind which the dirty work can be accomplished. When the fog finally clears, we'll all find out that, once again, we've been screwed, blued and tattoed. And the assumption is that all momentum will be spent; there will be no undoing of what has been done.

He will then try and talk he and his corporate masters' way out of it, to put lipstick on the 1 ton pig that they've raised with such loving care. But, there is a lesson that Obama appears to have not yet learned: you cannot talk your way out of a situation you have acted yourself into. He will find that his gift for lofty-sounding rhetoric isn't going to work. It will backfire. The man is not a Democrat, he is a corporatist Republican-lite. He will no longer be able to plausibly claim otherwise. And he will get his ass handed to him in 2012.

I would rather see no health"care" reform if all it is going to end up being is this health insurance giga-coproate welfare program that they are getting ready to deploy against the us. Few would agree with me, but I think that time favors momentum for a single-payer system. And the continuance of this collective butt-fucking that we are currently suffering only works towards overcoming the apathy and credulity of the electorate: the greed and rapaciousness of the the insurance racketeers is being indugled with progressively fewer and less restraints, and it is reaching the point that the propaganda from the MSM can no longer provide cover for it. As that process unfolds, it's going to turn a lot more heads, and awaken a lot more sleepers. Things will gravitate towards a major revolution in the ballot box, or in the streets if the ballot box fails.

Pete2069's picture

No longer looks or talks like the Obama on the campaign trail...
Obama fits in more with Emanuel and his blue dogs then the progressive he promise a CHANGE and a transparent government to..

It is believed by many crewmen and investigators that John McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E to shake up the guy in the plane behind his A-4. 'Wet-starts' shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft.

In McCain's case, the 'wet-start' apparently 'cooked off' and launched the Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that touched off the explosions."

134 sailors were killed on the USS Forrestal in 1967.

Why does theis clown still have any credibility?

Look, I'm no McCain fan, but the video and reports indicate that the Zuni rocket flew all the way across the flight deck to hit John McCain's A-4. Even if he did "wet-start" his A-4, there is no way in hell that would have caused the rocket to fire from a plane completely on the other side of the deck.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_USS_Forrest...

Plus, according to the diagram, any fire shooting out of the tail of the A-4 would have been in the opposite direction of the F-4.

Now, I confess I don't know much about planes or bombs or rockets, but I just can't see how John McCain could have been held accountable for this. What am I missing?

I only very recently realized that because what you say is true, and although at the moment it appears to be anything but, the U.S. is a failed state. We're in a death spiral. The original animating spirit has already departed, and it is only inertia that is keeping the carcass in motion. The only thing that the complete and total corruption of our political system is accomplishing is the bleeding-off the what inertia remains, at a rate that is faster than would otherwise happen. Not a happy thought.

McCain: "The incredible delays in acquiring that kind of care, so I think it's and not just that, I think it's the example of government-run health care in other countries which is not — America is not ready for that."

The rationing is already happening. And it's based on class, which is based on income. "Can you afford it?" is how we're rationing it now. The question is, is that a fair and equitable basis for deciding who lives and who dies?

For rich Republicans, I guess they figure it's entirely fair. If you're not smart enought, or well-connected enough to have "earned" the bucks that entitle you to healthcare, then you are on the ration list and you won't get it. After all, poor people don't contribute all that much to society, so why bother keeping them around, right?

Once I post something, if it ends up being true, it's no longer mine, it's everybody's.

As an Arizona resident, over the last 15 years I've watched closely as Senator McCain has jumped out with some "maverick" positions, only to be meekly dragged back into the GOP herd within 2-3 days. This was even worse during his 2008 presidential campaign, where he seemed to lose even that pseudo-maverick pose, along with the rest of his personality.

Anyone have a theory on this? Is the man just an attention whore, who says controversial things so people will notice him? Or does he have a sort of policy-oriented Tourette's syndrome, where he just can't control himself? Or does Mr. McCain perhaps actually mean what he says, but his GOP masters have some sort of extortion material they hold over him?

I'm always amused by the possibility that somebody is pulling the senator's strings. McCain extortion material might be something as simple as his recorded POW confession from the Hanoi Hilton. There's no way any reasonable person could fault the man on this -- the bastards tortured him until he gave the same sort of bogus confession that so many other POWs gave. But someone has apparently managed to keep the documented recording out of public hands for a long, long time. I wonder.

It should be clear by now that EVERY candidate for president has been thoroughly vetted by our corporate industrial masters long before the nominating conventions.

Starcats's picture

Ask yourself again why you lost the election.

I swear, this man is bitter as all hell that he's not in Barack's position. Because if McCain had won, we would not be having this conversation about healthcare.

The fact that these kinds of STUPID STORIES are still in the headlines only re-enforces the fact that this naiton is a collective bunch of hopeless Walmart shopping hillbillies that will NEVER COME OF AGE with the rest of the world. We once had all the money to hide our idiocies behind, but the GOP took care of that with these senseless wars... we now stand exposed for the dumb-asses we truly are.

Republicans are just sick, twisted, desperate, lying SOB's. That's all there is to it. Do we need to stoop to their level just to fight back, or is it possible to take the high road and still win. I honestly don't know. They fight dirty, and they're proud of it. They don't care that they lie to the American people, and the American people are just stupid enough to believe whatever they dish out, no matter how ridiculous. And never mind that the media doesn't seem to have any interest in correcting the record or calling them out, with the exception of a few. The fact is, McCain has enjoyed govt run healthcare his entire life, from cradle to now. These pamphlets they keep talking about didn't just pop up. They've been out there for years. It is truly disgusting the way these people operate. They're literally just grasping at every disgusting thing they can find and throwing it out there. I'm so sick of it.

This kind of crap only works because people are afraid of dying.

Let's see how far to the right they go before they fall off of the edge of this flat world.

To date 4500 American servicemembers have fallen victim to Bush and Cheney's death panel in Iraq. You can't go to a movie theatre hardly without seeing military death panels, ie recruiting ads, aimed at our impressional youth glorifying war as if it were a war game. Wars not to be fought as a last resort but as an offense so Halliburton and Big Oil can get richer.

to totally irrelevant old man in a couple of years. There should be a lesson in there somewhere. I would doubt that John McCain's ego would allow him to look for it.

he's a narcissistic sociopath. Honest self-examination is not in the cards for that kind of person.
