Matthews, Maddow and Olbermann React to Jindal Response Speech

MSNBC's coverage immediately following Jindal's speech. From what we've heard so far tonight it doesn't look like anyone was too impressed with it. For some more fun here's Think Progress' mash up of the speech and the reaction over at Fox News.

Rachel's reaction matched my own after watching Jindal. Matthews did a good job at pointing out the absurdity of it all. But, I still feel David Books said it best on PBS: "The worst rebuttal in history... totally out of touch with the reality of the times... The best thing to happen for Obama all night."
Jindal just proved to America that the Republican Party has fallen and can't get up.
that Juan Williams actually made sense until he began to talk about the last part of Jindal's speech. It's the things that Williams found traction with that has doomed the Republican ideology.
Please also call Gov Jindal's office in LA, please ask him to release a statement of clarification regarding his attempt at humour, that a pre-existing condition is no laughing matter !! 225-342-0991
-Please call him
Or watched the Half-Hour News Hour, An American Carol or heard Barack the Magic Negro?
By those standards, the 'pre-existing condition' joke is hilarious.
Even Fox News couldn't, and wouldn't, save him. I had the same reaction as RM. Flabbergasting.
Morning at the Jindal's...
Well I won that bet.
Ya damn troll.
Been a member for all of 4 days now...piss off!
want to punish us boomers and won't be satisfied until everyone from Keith O to us obscure nobodies have our begging bowls extended.
want the people to become agitated...if that happens, by god, we'll bring their ivory towers crashing down upon their heads.
Thies is probably why the SEC pleaded "executive privilege" before congree a few weeks ago
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/m...
a 6800 DOW by today's end. Unless we're just seeing a morning dump before the afternoon pump. Anyone who's long is this market is nuts.
Fear, zero solutions...same old shit. BTW 80% of the Nation is telling you to eat your own shit.
do you expect the market to recover, less than 12 hours after the speech?
That's all they GOT sir! :) Have to dig around for SOMETHING after we witness the complete implosion of any chance the republic party has in the future. Let them feed their followers their bat-shit crazy comments. Let them run with it all the way to Fox news. Won't make any difference, as this is just another nail in the GOP coffin.
Pretty much the same thing I told my li'l sis last night...
Give them enough rope...
they fucked shit up.
the greatest myth in economic history is that the stock market is a barometer of economic health.
is that the 10,000+ Dow was just bloated bullshit driven by extending debt and credit into the next century.
The 10,000+ Dow was a bubble..just like real estate, driven by a failed economic policy, rampant misguided deregulation and crony capitalism.
Obama didn't kill the market...as you seem to imply...it collapsed under its own weight...just as our supply side bullshit driven economy has.
agrees with that and he told congress so many times.
Wall Street is doing what it is doing becasue Wall Street knows that Wall Street has screwed up the economy as bad as it can be screwed up. If Busy was still there Wall Street would be at 5000. this is all on Bush. Make no mistake. Bush is the cause of this.
Cliiiiiintooooooon!
the 10,000+ dow, though not a myth, isn't normal. the market was driven by an obsured housing market and isn't likely to pass 10,000 again, or at least no time soon. we need to hope that it stablizes, once it does, investors will get back in the "game". get people working again or feeling safe from layoffs and they will start spending money.
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/02/25/bu...
So in other words Wall Street hasn't had the chance to respond yet since the speech came after closure, and they're reacting to other factors.
don't get there tips from CNN and the NY Times.
Anyway we still have to face a 294 day CMB auction and 5 year note auction today and try to raise a ridiculous $72 billion in new money. (In one day)
Real players also know there are many more factors than a political speech at work here too.
We could start recovering, but if Japan's or England's doesn't that could cause Wall Street to start faltering again. Or if OPEC cuts production again, or there's a general strike somewhere...
to date because none of that money is coming back.
Sucks but that's reality. Yes it pisses me off.
Bit Time
Odds are our stocks lost value, but still exist, so they could return in value over the long term. Only amateurs panic and bail early, worsening such conditions as these.
that you know little if anything at all.
But's it obvious that when this whole thing crashes to the bottom, and who knows now where that is, the big money will buy up whatever they want for pennies on the dollar and then back to reinflating the whole game with new owners for much of what was decimated and further control in those old boys hands.
... treating the NYSE as if it were a timer spilling out bonus points as an incentive to complete the level.
It can't. There are trading safeguards in place to prevent the Dow closing down 20-zoggitybillion at negative ooogaboogatrillion.
Rude, much?
Don't feed the troll.
Since WHEN did such rebuttals start taking place after the presidents NON State of The Union address?
I do not ever remember seeing a Dem make a rebuttal after one of dumbyas snorefest speeches!
Anyone?
asked the repugs to rebut Obama. I'm sure they were hoping for better than they got from Jinglebrains.
All the MSM, save MSNBC, were trying to trumpet Obama as a popular guy, rather than a thoughtful, intelligent President.
ConcernedCanuck pointed out to me in another thread, that the GOP picked Jindal to give the rebuttal...and that Dems have given rebuttals, though not nearly as bad as Jindals, after a bush "speech".
"Jinglebrains" I love that!!
He's got brains...that Jingle, jangle, jindal..
as he goes riding merrily along
And they say...oh we got Bobby Jindal...
to spew that defunct GOP song...
Gonna be singin that all day.
I knew a man named Jindal, and he'd talk for you
It once was news
With glassy eyes and vacant smile and talking points
The GOP soft-shoe
Mr. Bojindal ... Mr. Bojindal ...
Dance.
thanks and I, too, will be singing this all day long!! Just when you think the republican(t)s couldn't be any more messed up, along comes Bobby... Like Rachel, I was stunned into silence. What a bunch of losers!
There once was a man from Big Easy.
Who told the country to suck it
Didn't blink his eyes..
as he finally said, Ah fuck it
Then he parroted RNC lies.
Ok..so it ain't exactly poetry...but you get the idea.
Upon readin this...again...this pathetic attempt at a tribute to the classic Nantucket limerick...it's a pretty shitty limerick...
I can't remember a single instance of that either. Italy, i.e. where the Vatican is, has a soft porn TV channel that is not cable, broadcasting three ways 24/7. This propaganda bullsh*t is infuriating, and thankfully becoming very transparent as it is in the Soviet Union, or so I read.
Unfortunately for the Republicans, that may have ben Jindal's best effort.
Aha!....I was trying to tell my husband this morning about Jindal's "rebuttal" while we were sitting up in bed reading the NYTimes. (He conked out right toward the end of Obama's speech--hard day.) I told him there ought to be a headline under the front-page Obama speech headline reading "Bobby Jindal Bombs." Never heard anything so lame in my life.
"bobbie's" rebuttal farted.
Not a fart of history making proportions.
Not a proud fart.
Not a fart that would send thousands running for the bomb shelters.
Not a Saturday night bean supper fart.
It was a fart in a windstorm.. signifying nothing.
A mere phitt of lukewarm gas.
Spray fart...or "shart" as it were may apply here...
Still no substance.
Just a little embarrassing moisture and that lovely aroma.
Not with a bang, but a flutter?
not even bobby "brother voodoo" jindal can perform an exorcism on a dead elephant.
I mean talk about a bad actor phew man words can't describe.
Jindal sounded like he was talking to a room full of second graders. Jeez, he needs work before he makes any more public speeches. I guess next year they'll let winkie Palin give it a try.
would you expect their IQ to be higher than a second grader?
I would not.
As a die-hard leftie, Sarah Palin is a god-send, and I can't wait for her to be back in the limelight. She is the the living embodiment of the Republican belief that "we the people" are idiots and should belive and behave as we are told, no matter how counter-productive it might be to our own interests. Nothing says "The GOP is dead, and just to stupid to lie down" like their support for that ignorant, intolerant wretch.
SNL will have another revival...Palin/Jindal
The gifts that will keep on giving.
Palin/Jindal. I'm sure Barack and Joe are shaking at the thought...Bwahahahaha!
We don't need help. We are not invalids. We don't have limited mental capacity thank you.
Remenber that the folks he appeals to do have limited mental capacity, otherwise I'm sure they would turn this mental midget off. In his selfish arrogance, Jindal never considered the idea of upgrading his message. That's the "rebranded" GOP for you--same stupidity, different way.
Exactly, may God bless them. This was for the kool-aid drinkers and that swath of red running through Appalachia. This group comprises the 20% in this nation who are imbeciles, and that's the 20% the republic party can expect to vote for them next go around.
remember that jinglehead is a repug and that means that his simple intent in 'speaking for Louisiana' is to make sure that the people suffer and that they blame it on the President and Democrats.
Bush, Grandpa, Palin, and now this "house Indian". The GOP has zero talent. If I were a Republican, I'd switch parties.
not until there is a third party. the dems are already suffering with harry, nancy and the bluedogs, not to mention the DLC/DSCC/DCCC.
NO let the GOP either implode, or let the schism occur.
Last thing the Dems need is a bunch of turncoat repugs flocking to the Democratic Party, bringin their poisonous ideology with them.
I crashed last night before he gave his rebuttal. I have tried to watch it three times today and every time I do, it's like my brain just goes numb. He's difficult to follow or something. Kind of reminded me of the speech bush gave in NO that time with the creepy lighting. Just damned strange.
he came awfully close!!!
Bobble Head. He does have the limited talent required for that gig.
I thought Bobby's performance was genius. Never before have I heard someone speak in such monotone deadpan, and succeed in whining so loudly.
Brooks called Jindal's "no government is good government" premise "nihilistic." If you are a GOPer getting blasted by Brooks, boy, do you have a problem. And the GOP does---big time.
http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w161/kynan...
Jindal speech and delivery were the essence of the word, amateurish.
sound like Bugs Bunny a few times, no offense to Bugs.
Bugs is a hell of a lot smarter than this pinhead.
What a maroon.
the page character on the TV show 30-Rock who comes from some backwoods place full of superstitions and silly ideas. It's bizarre how similar they sound and so apropos after listening to the "substance" (or lack thereof) of his rebuttal.
Jindal says that big government is the problem, and "the American spirit has triumphed over almost every form of adversity."
However, his examples are all massive government programs:
"This is the nation that cast off the scourge of slavery ... overcame the Great Depression ... prevailed in two World Wars ... won the struggle for civil rights ... defeated the Soviet menace ... and responded with determined courage to the attacks of September 11, 2001." Republicans argue about what helped us out of the Depression,
but is war won by "restrained spending in Washington, and empowered individuals and small businesses?"
Rachel speechless, Tweety right on point. I watched the Fox news follow-up and what did THEY talk about? The cadence of the speech and the fact he had to follow Obama. They never ONCE mentioned the CONTENT of that speech and how idiotic it was. Typical misdirection and ommision from the folks who call themselves journalists and analysts.
They are Republican Neocon journalists, giving a "fair" and "balanced" viewpoint. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Barely got that out.
Honest to god I just don't understand why more people don't delete that channel from their TV's like I have. I wouldn't even know Fox News existed if it wasn't for C+L. :)
Sometimes, it's good to see what the enemy is up to.
Ron Paul just “blew up” CNBC. They had cut to what they thought was going to be the testimony of Bernanke before a Congressional Committee, and Barney Frank threw it to Ron Paul for a two-minute opening statement, which CNBC aired live at about 10:13 a.m. EST. Paul ripped the existing system, revealed the globalist’s plan for the pending international (single fiat currency) system which is set to replace the dollar system, and proclaimed that it will not work.
CNBC came back to the studio, where Mark Haynes said:
“This is not going according to plan. They were supposed to limit opening statements, so we’re going to go to commercial and return when the testimony of Bernanke begins.”
Get your hands on this video from CNBC. It reveals that the entire mainstream media game is rigged - by the bankers.
Pay no attention to that man at the podium! - The corporate MSM.
the entire mainstream media game is rigged - by the bankers.
is in its last throes, if you will.....Dickhead Cheney
Hope someone recorded that!
I will be up on YouTube shortly. Bet on it!!! Can't wait for the premier.
for sure.
He's a well-meaning nutbag, but he's still a nutbag.
But it will still be interesting to watch.
About all one can say if they caught even a glimpse of this pathetic tone-deaf speech by Bobblehead Bobby is OY! Since he's a Rhodes scholar, I must say that I expected better....much better. This was amateurish to say the least. I think this destroyed this man's reputation as well.
He walks like a mannequin, speaks like a bobblehead and looks like a bad commercial for Schick Atra's.
Holy. Fucking. Crap!!!!
....Juan Williams actually made sense until he began to talk....
Wan Williams is almost totally irrelevant.
the standards to become a Rhodes Scholar since Bobblehead Bobby is a creationist.
I watched Hume live (sometimes the ass kissing on MMSNBC can be to strong even for this Liberal) when he was making excuses for Jindal. "He's in a room with no crowd, etc." Come on, Brett. You are such a tool.
In a room with no crowd, using words with no substance, talking to a GOP audience with no standards, in a country with no more tolerance. Good night, and good luck.
I tried to pay attention to what that idiot had to say, alas... his eyes completely freaked me out.
I hate to be so superficial, but honestly... it was the lack of blinking and humanity in those eyes. Almost like some sort of demonic automaton.
I wish I had better words to describe that look, other than just the fact that it really freaked me out.
Bobby and Beck would be great evil characters in those wide eyed Anime flicks.
I know exactly what you mean. It's like if you look into his eyes he'll have some strange power over you.
Jindal looks like the Hypno Frog in Futurama!!!
LOLOLOL!
I much prefer Blinky.
I'm betting on ritalin.
same lifeless eyes as Mrs. Bush.
To me he looks like all those possessed dolls you see in horror movies, the ones that get taken over by the spirit of some dead guy with a grudge.
After Obama's speech to see what they were saying. Hammity was on the red herring rampage about the swamp mouse thing for a good long tear--it was live, and there was nothing he wanted to touch with a ten-foot-pole on what Obama said. (How could he? Obama didn't just hit a home run at the 7th game of the world series bottom of the ninth two outs, that was the definition of "grand slam.")
Later, long after Jindal spoke, the generic heads were whining about Keith Olberman's audible "Oh my God" after he introduced Jindal and the young Republican wunderboy came out looking like a kindergartener who had to make something up for show and tell b/c he didn't bring anything from home that morning. They didn't speak of WHAT Jindal said at all, but what Keith obviously uncontrollably let out. I did the same at home!
I used to get mad watching Faux. Now I indulge in the schaudenfreude whenever possible.
For a second I thought I was the one who muttered "Oh my God," and then I realized I'm not a baritone.
the newsroom snickers in the background!!!?
Yeah...totally classic!
(I thought these quotes and this program were a joke. They aren't. Yikes.)
"We need a program of psychosurgery and political control of our society. The purpose is physical control of the mind. Everyone who deviates from the given norm can be surgically mutilated.
"The individual may think that the most important reality is his own existence, but this is only his personal point of view. This lacks historical perspective.
"Man does not have the right to develop his own mind. This kind of liberal orientation has great appeal. We must electrically control the brain. Some day armies and generals will be controlled by electrical stimulation of the brain."

...Mr. Rogers talking to 4 year olds. We're adults here, many with some reasonable amount of education...don't talk to us like we're in kindergarten telling us a story and then saying lame ass platitudes over and over about how 'Americans can do ANYTHING!' Drop the bogus inflection and pasted smile. My god, I don't know if I was more offended or disgusted....and I haven't even talked about the lies and lack of substance...ooh, I guess I just did.
to rebut Obama...Palin? Boehner? McConnell?
Ain't exactly Murderers Row...huh GOP! LOL!
Gosh...I may stock up on popcorn and actually watch these rebuttals! It's potentially some of the best comedy TV you'll ever see.
Maybe the GOP can shoot for a ratings boost by having Palin have a wardrobe malfunction.
See that moment of hesitation behind the flags, just before he walked out?
Almost like he didn't want to deliver that ridiculous rebuttal, but his masters made him do it anyway...I bet he saw Obama rock the house, and knew he was outclassed.
I get a picture of Cheney wearing horns and jabbing him with a pitch fork.
Can he do that from his wheelchair?
*disclaimer*
This post is directed solely at the former dark lord of the underworld himself...not to anyone that is in a wheelchair...other than cheney...
or does Bobby Jindal think we're all still in first grade?
A speakers first mission is to understand his audience and communicate to them in their own language.
He did a great job!
Piyush (Bobby) Jindal
http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2009/02/21/...
they have it all figured out... the name AND campaign song...
get michele BACHMAN to run with Jindal: 'Bachman/Jindal Overdrive'...
(Takin' Care of Business)
When he was walking up to the mic, I heard K.O. utter an "Oh boy". I knew Jindal was in over head head then. Can anyone say "Not ready for primetime?"
Not being from the US, did I miss something? Why was he chosen for the rebuttal? Because it's the closest thing the GOP has to an Obama lookalike? If that is going to somehow dilute the power of Obama? It's nutty as hell. I don't have cable and neither do I know if you can even get Fox News in Australia. I only know any wingnuttery from C&L. Is the GOP going to fill their top echelon with African Americans? How ironic. There is only one Obama.
Diversity clouds their beautiful minds.
he's the repugs "Great Brown Hope".
If his poll numbers tank their next choice is joe the pretend plumber in minstrel makeup.
In the GOP's amusing, yet pathetic struggle to stay relevant...they are clearly grasping at straws...using every lame idea they can come up with to actually enter into this century...
Seeing as how Rupert Murdoch of News Corp infamy is ( I think) from Australia, you probably have some version of Fox News over there...just look for the most irritating and full of shit network, and chances are it's owned by Murdoch.
The GOP will use any patsy they think will keep their party alive.
Hey I thought Fred Rogers was dead!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq7xyjU-jsU
Hey, mebbe we can get Weird Al Yancovich to redo the lyrics!
My thoughts exactly, hearing him talk was like story time at my daughter's pre-school, only the story was so very scary. All he needed was a nice cardigan and a pair of Keds
Why are all these Right Wing-NutO's soooooo damn unattractive and stupid. The Reslugs are dying slowly, thankfully.
Did anyone else hear someone stage whisper "Oh my God" or "My God" when Jindal approached the camera? I think it was either Chris Matthews of Keith Olberman. I think they were shocked that Jindal sort of walked onto the scene towards he camera like Opie walking up to a girl a a dance on "The Andy Griffith Show." It was really strange the way Jindal walked in here.
There's also a poll asking people who they think said it.
And you can cleary hear it. They say, "Oh God," positvely dripping with sarcasm.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/24/msnb...
Trust the fucked up shell of the former republic party to pick a consummate college republican candy-ass yellow elephant wimp as their "Great Brown Hope". The little milquetoast couldn't even beat Bristol Palin in an arm wrestling match.
I wish, just once, I'd see a politician deliver a speech
On acid.
You...or the politician?
.
Please also call Gov Jindal's office in LA, please ask him to release a statement of clarification regarding his attempt at humour, that a pre-existing condition is no laughing matter !! 225-342-0991
I am having SO MUCH FUN.
I'd bad enough when poliicians can't pronounce "nuclear" but this jamoke can't even pronounce "president."
"Present" Obama?
Who is he, Gomer Pyle?
Or Barney Fife?
...found time to jab at some Democrats. MUST one always try to be balanced with each and every observation? Cripes, stick to the subject, man: Jindal came off as a wooden boob.
Is it just me, or does charles krauthammer look more and more like a drunken Vulcan?
Live long and...BLEEEECCCHH!!!
I can see it now-- the GOP fatheads choosing someone to rebut Obama:
"Who should we get to rebut President Obama?"
-- "Well, people like them Indians. Did you see how well Slumdog Millionaire did at the Oscars?"
"Brilliant! Now just make sure he talks about how Government is useless, and we should be back on top again!"
Do they think that doing Bob-eye as a sort of Bollywood star that, would be cool.
Pee Yoo.
for the Republican response, because quite frankly and as everyone knows, they are the ones responsible for the unforgivable mess the country is in. I did hear on AC360 before going to bed, someone thought it was absurd and Jindal sounded as if he were talking to children. From the second clip I can see why. As much as I am enjoying watching the GOP literally crumble in a way it's also too bad. I am sure there are still some responsible Republicans (not including Jindal because something about him just isn't right) who have much to offer but may not have the opportunity because the GOP has lost their collective minds.
I had a rare moment of respect for Chris Matthews there in his response
You had to love Jindal's awkward smile at the end of his piece, like his face muscles are going "huh? You want to what? Hey guys, any of you know what this smile thing is?"
How awful. Jindal / Palin in 2012?
