Mary Matalin Prefers the Victim Card to Fact Checking Michele Bachmann
CNN's John King asks his guests James Carville and Mary Matalin to fact check these statements by Michele Bachmann in her response to the State of the Union address yesterday.
BACHMANN: Well, what did we buy? Instead of a leaner, smarter government, we bought a bureaucracy that now tells us which lightbulbs to buy and which may put 16,500 IRS agents in charge of policing President Obama's health care bill.
King actually bothers to start pointing out that her statement about the IRS agents is just not true and when he asks Matalin to weigh in, she pulls out the pity card for Bachmann and claims that liberals are attacking her because they just want to shut her up. She also asserts that it's the Democrats that are propping her up on some equal footing with the president. Sorry Lady McCheney, but it's the tea partiers and your network that decided to do that when airing her response. I agree with your husband, keep her crazy ass out there talking.
They also never bothered to point out that it was George Bush, not Barack Obama that signed the energy bill that changed the standard on lightbulbs. Matalin was too busy pulling out the victim card for Bachmann.

We're not going to get very far if you keep injecting logic into the conversation!
We don't need no stinkin' facts!
quality.
The problem with our media is encapsulated in this exchange. why the hell doesn't John King say, Mary, you talked for 45 seconds and didn't address my question even once. We we'rent talking about anyone trying to tell MB to shut up, we we're discussing her drivel being a lie and just flat out crazy talk.
---
what is worse, ignorance or indifference?
I don't know and I don't care!
For the same reason no one asked "why the hell haven't we gone with single payer or socialized medicine since it would save us an assload of money".... maintaining the status quo. Those yachts for insurance company execs aren't just going to buy themselves, you know.
CNN has fully embraced the future as an infotainment provider which means drama is more important than facts, access more important than analysis, and ratings more important than truth.
And never lose sight of the fact that John king carries water for the right wing idiots as often as he can. he is the one who brought on Erik Erickson as some kind of legitimate voice. John King is an asshole.
He uses his hands just like the republicans do. He is a pitch man just like the republicans are.
Yes, he is an asshole but then just think about the people he works for !!!

the irs will check compliance of individual taxpayers, and the will have to hire additional agents, it is just the number that is unclear. this was all gone over last yea ron this blog, the consensus was that the irs will enforce this travesty.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/insurance...
I don't see that anywhere in the IRS website link (the press release that you posted). And to quote the second link (USA today):
Sure sounds like teh bullshit from the representative from Crazyland... The "enforcement" part doesn't seem to be the serious money pit compared to the processing portions of it. ("Enforcement" from the IRS is *not* sending thugs to your door.)
That being said, I think we could have easily gotten rid of all of the red tape by just going with HR 676 and saved money in the process, but as that's seen as "socialism" by everyone with clout, it's going to be curiously missing from the public debate.
i even found the exact wording in the bill, checked with a cpa, the irs will enforce the individual mandate, the only fuzzy part is the people power required. ask a cpa, they are licking their chops, business not so much.
---------------------------------------------
from usa today
"While the IRS can impose liens or levies, seize property or seek jail time against people who don't pay taxes, it's barred from taking such actions against taxpayers who ignore the insurance mandate. In the arsenal instead: the ability to withhold refunds from taxpayers who decline to pay the penalty, IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said this month."
cpa says it will be on your tax form, how much you paid for your insurance if you don't get it from work, real problem will be if you try to dodge it, i.e. filing a false return.
I despise the "individual mandate" as much as you do. Essentially President Milquetoast and the authors of the bill injected a layer of private health insurance into something that should have been covered by a single payer system.
Bachmann is completely full of shit -- there's no way anyone is hiring some astronomical number of IRS agents to come kick down your red-blooded American door. That's basic fearmongering, and it should probably be called as such.
If her statement isn't true, *saying* that a false statement isn't true should therefore be considered true. If he's saying that the IRS budget and/or staffing won't increase at all, that's also bullshit, but I don't believe that's what he was saying.
Making the IRS out to be "the boogieman" goes a long way towards moving the role of taxes from paying your civic duty to the upkeep of the country in general and moves it towards the Republicans' characterization that it's somehow "stealing" "your" money.
Sure, they'll hire more people and they will have a higher budget. I'd wager every time we pass a new law with new provisions that involve penalties, they have to hire more people. But that 15,000 or 16,000 "pie in the sky" number is bullshit.
who knows? just cause it's free don't mean it's no good.
it is a made up number, we will have to see, but as you say, the irs is a good scare tactic. hey, don't blame me, i am single payer all the way; that or insurcos must be non-profit like in der rhineland.

because we did go round and round with it at this site when they were debating the bill. There are a lot of things that a whole lot of us don't like about it, myself included that it would be nice to see fixed now that it's passed. Better yet, I'd prefer we had single payer, but we're not going to see that get passed any time soon if ever.
My main point was that Matalin really didn't want to debate the fact that Bachmann's still just repeating the same old tired talking points we've been hearing out of the GOP for the last couple of years, but would rather play the same game she has when defending Palin -- the mean liberals are just picking on Republican women. Spare me.
Here was Ezra Klein's article on the hiring of the additional agents and how they came up with that number back when the Newtster was pushing it.
Will the IRS need 16,000 new agents to enforce health-care reform?
i just have to be better, youngest son, middle child....
never hurts to do a better job than King did of pointing out exactly why she was full of crap. I'm just tired of them playing the victim card with these harpies.
I remember that the way this 16,000 IRS agent deal became an urban legend is because somebody found out that he IRS was getting a raise of $XXX amount of money. Then somebody at Fox or something figured out how many agents the $XXX amount of money would fund and it was 16,000. Then they said the the 16,000 were going to be used to check up on the health care insurance delinquents. The 16,000 agent deal is all made up out of whole cloth. it's bullshit.
And don't forget the way Bachmann went with the $200,000,000 a day price tag for Obama's trip to India last year. this woman is dangerously stupid. Stay away from her. You might get hurt.
for all the cheap plastic shit in China. She makes Andy Kaufman seems like a piker when it comes to bizarre statements.

Crazy. Make up. Sex.
only known case of a Dem screwing a Rethug.
to think Carville was a good spokesman for the Democrats. He's blunt, folksy, and isn't afraid to fight back. But any minimal respect he may have earned has been squandered by his marriage to that creature. How anybody can put up with that lying harpy is beyond me, He's no movie star, but she's repulsive, and I don't mean her looks.
this is what passes for commentary on teh CNN ? (i have no cable) ...

seems to feel the need to allow Matalin to throw a hissy fit on his show at least every few weeks or so. I'm really tired of watching Rudy Giuliani's former staffer John Avlon come on there, call himself an "independent" and tell us all what the "center" of the country wants our politicians to do as well.
hearing some kind of coherent discussion of the speech ... but I'll stick with democracynow.org

Not on CNN. I pulled their discussion right after it aired last night and ran out of gas and didn't post it. If you think this was bad, you may not want to watch that either...lol. I'll probably go ahead and throw that up there before it gets much later tonight.

meant to be a reply to ixnay...sorry.
so she goes right for Gender Harrassment!
On the MERITS of the cast... Michelle Bachmann is a BUBBLEHEAD and a LOSER. Tweety's got her nailed. (But he, also, spent about TWENTY MINUTES taolking about her tonight.) Just based on screen time, Bachmann is willing the Palin/Bachmann Race To The Finish.
I don't agree with a damn thing that comes out of her mouth and spent a lot of money supporting her challenger, Tarryl Clark, but she lost. Bachmann won. Say what you will about her, but "loser" is not based in fact. Bachmann is a reactionary liar, and she needs to be replaced in Congress. Until she is replaced, until she's defeated in an election, she's a winner.
THAT is her district's shameful problem. Next time, put your money where your keyboard is and fund her challenger.

I get a kick out of these two. He's actually funny, and she is dry as a bone. Gotta love it!
Some of the hottest sex I ever has was when I was angry with my then partner. These two must burn up the sheets. I won't address the dry bone aspect of your comment.
However, I've noticed how seemingly rational people are so willing to turn deaf ears toward liars that they agree with politically. I was able to pick out when Olbermann had his facts wrong, and I was willing to state so as they related to Beck. On the right, as we see here, people who know better don't call out the liars like Bachmann or Beck even when their claims are provably false.
That, in theory, should make them lose credibility, but sadly people have come to believe what they WANT to believe rather than what is in fact true. This is certainly the case with reactionaries writing about Beck, so it's not surprising to see Bachmann's lies ignored the same way.

Matalin is slime, and so is Carville for marrying her.
You cannot defend Bachmann and her bullshit. There's just no logical way of doing it.

So it's beside the point that every single historical reference made by the tea party spokesperson was wrong eh Mary? It's hillarious watching her face when she knows in her heart she can't defend something. She looks like she's sitting on the toilet struggling. Then her only defense is "Awwwww, she's just a girl." Truly pathetic.
I used to admire the considerable intellect of Mary, even thinking at one stage that she was a tad smarter than James.
Sad to see what big bucks is doing to the USA political scene.
Soon everyone in politics and journalism will argue politics like Palin(4colleges to get an university degree, or was it 5?),Bachmann,Angle....
And Hannity and Beck, who did not make it to/through college(I mention them, because of Mary's complaint that James' criticism of Bachmann is an examole of liberal men hating women).
In the meantime,China and India are sending their best to obtain post graduate degrees at the best universities in the West, including the USA.

King doesn't care about getting to the truth. He is too busy brown-nosing people of power so that he can go to the parties and hobnob, taking along his lovely horse-faced wife, Dana Bash. I've never seen an uglier woman on cable.
