Lou Dobbs Still Attacking Unions
Lou Dobbs is still attacking unions. This time for President Obama turning over a series of three Bush-era executive orders. From the AFL-CIO:
The men and women in the nation’s building and construction trades won a major victory today when President Obama signed an executive order overturning the Bush administration’s ban on project labor agreements (PLAs) on federal and federally funded construction.
Today’s action follows Obama’s three executive orders last week that reversed a trio of Bush-era orders governing the way federal contractors deal with union workers. The new orders:
- Require federal service contractors to offer jobs to current workers when contracts change.
- Reverse a Bush order requiring federal contractors to post notice that workers can limit financial support of unions serving as their exclusive bargaining representatives.
- Prevent federal contractors from being reimbursed for expenses meant to influence workers deciding whether to form a union and engage in collective bargaining.
More from the AFL-CIO on those executive orders: Obama Reverses Bush Executive Orders, Creates Middle Class Task Force
President Barack Obama today reversed three Bush-era anti-worker executive orders and created a Cabinet-level task force to rebuild the nation’s middle class. In a White House ceremony this morning attended by AFL-CIO President John Sweeney and other union leaders, Obama signed three executive orders that reverse a series of orders by then-President George W. Bush, which govern the way federal contractors deal with unionized workers.
The three new executive orders:
- Require federal service contractors to offer jobs to current workers when contracts change.
- Reverse a Bush order requiring federal contractors to post notice that workers can limit financial support of unions serving as their exclusive bargaining representatives.
- Prevent federal contractors from being reimbursed for expenses meant to influence workers deciding whether to form a union and engage in collective bargaining.
Before signing the orders, Obama said:
We cannot have a strong middle class without strong labor unions. We need to level the playing field for workers and the unions that represent their interests.
Bill Tucker brings in Stefan Gleason from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation to comment on how this is just a huge payback to the unions for political donations and Dobbs is outraged that taxpayers are being forced to pay money that goes to the unions.
This sounds to me like just more Right to Work rhetoric that doesn't get at the heart of what Right to Work laws do to unions. I think a better term would be the right to financially bust a union. The one thing that no one ever talks about during these discussions is that in "open shops" where a union does manage to get in the door in a "right to work" state, it allows those who choose to opt out of the union to still be afforded the union pay scales which are bargained for by the union and the union is forced to represent those workers even though they haven't paid any dues.
Those things are not free. Attorney fees are expensive and union business reps cannot afford to work for free and have salaries that have to be paid by union members. When you force those representitives and lawyers to bargain for or represent those who haven't paid into the system, the outcome is obvious.
You bust the union financially because there's always a group of people out there who will happily accept the benefits without paying their share to receive them. It's human nature. I've got mine and the hell with everyone else. Unions by their very nature are the opposite of that. It's we're in this together and when one of us benefits, all of us benefit and everyone pays their share for their representation.
Lou Dobbs hates unions because he thinks they are on the side of those evil Mexicans he loves to rail about night after night, so he's got a new enemy. Mr. Populist doesn't care about working people if he wants to rail on about unions night after night. I've got news for you Lou Dobbs. A union is not its leadership. A union is the members. When you attack the leadership, you attack the members as well because they are the ones we voted in to represent us.
Arnold Schwarzenegger found that out the hard way in CA when he decided to start trying to demonize the unions there and got put in his place for doing it. And Lou, YES, this is change. It's a President who's actually supportive of labor and unions instead of one who was determined to bust them at every turn and put anti-labor zealots in charge of the Department of Labor. Unions are the only group out there solely representing the interest of workers and not business or corporations.
Shame on you Lou Dobbs. You're nothing but a hate monger. I actually used to like your show for a while there before you looked like you lost your mind over immigration. You've taught me the error of my ways.

That makes as much sense as attacking guilds

puts the lie to Dobbs' populist BS. Nothing like attacking the same working people you think buy into the rest of your garbage.
And ")0("? If you think unions are "institutions of the past," you haven't been paying attention lately.
I want Unions back.
But the "threat" of Unions is in the past.

His idiotic disciples actually believe he's looking out for them.
Did he have on anyone from the unions to discuss this "windfall to the middle class" tragedy?
What a prick. And of course, all the non-union and repug business owners are going to start shitting bricks. Oh well....let them, I guess. Let's see what support for the union worker does to "OUR economy". What an ass hole.

in Ireland, all around Europe, and even in Iceland organized protests and are bringing about change rather than taking it up the butt and "renegotiating" contracts like unions are in North America. Why is that?
So much for the hard on he had for the everyday hard working middle class Americans. Now that his former 'heroes for ratings' have actually gained some political ground he views them as a threat. Dobbs is such a two faced piece of shit!

wages and benefits, I suggest that they just don't bid on those jobs. That will show Obama.
Louis Dobbs is a punk ass bitch. He'll hound on about immigration and unions month after month, but won't pursue the issue of the Anthrax sent to our Nation's top leaders before the passage of the Patriot Act. New evidence just points out the whole story is bogus. I'm so sick of so called respectable journalists burying their head in the sand over this stuff. And I'm not down on John Amato or C&L in particular over this issue because I know at one point they were on the story.. Here's the latest update.

Unbelievable. I can't be the only one that recognizes the importance of this. Please Ask Questions and Demand Answers. If we have people in our government practices this type of politics we need to expose them and root them out.

meh, i give dobbs props for successfully bridging the previously unheard of divide between neo nazis and corporate executives
for basic ideological reasons.
Lou and his like minded friends buy into Friedman economics which posits that a "reserve army" of unemployed are necessary for capitalism to work. Therefore unions, who protect workers and their..*ahem*.."right to work" are in Lou's itching swollen brain,a bad thing.

purchase some ad space from C&L and get the word out rather than throw our little thread off topic?
corporations/businesses develop monopolies but people can't organize to have their version of less likely to fail. the corporation identity is never ever satisfied so it has to find areas to cut out. they hate labor. this in my opinion has been a big part of the "cheap labor" movement. they say people won't take jobs that undocumented workers will take. yeah.......you won't pay people to take the jobs. also they want workers that are controlable so NOT to be concerned about osha/work comp. claims. they have set the middle class back 2 to 3 generations. a reset button to reduce labor cost.
then, add a pinch of the IMF, and their "austerity" programs, add a dash of "free" trade (see, very expensive and skewed trade), and mix with the idea of 'labor flexibilization'
this is part and parcel of unrestrained capitalism.
yet, what these dolts-posing-as-gurus failed to wrap their pea brains around is that this system won't work in the long run. maybe the reward of MASSIVE short term profit was enough for the ruling class to ignore the obvious fact that this system is doomed to fail.
or, more likely, thru the corporate/ruling class control of the govt, they knew when the shit hit the fan the govt-corp would, using tax payer money, bailout our financial masters.
President Obama's budget proposes $989 billion in new taxes over the course of the next 10 years, starting fiscal year 2011, most of which are tax increases on individuals.

I don't understand this conservative idea that government is bad, unions are bad - basically anything that represents citizens is bad. Only things that represent business or religion are good.
Hopefully humanity will one day learn to be humane.
Anything that represents citizens voluntarily is not bad. Anything that preports to represent citizens, while making it a CRIME to not pay dues, is a racket (Government enforced, at that..), clear and simple.

You mean this Lou Dobbs, who was the subject of an article in the New Yorker by Ken Auletta in 2oo6?
http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/12/04/0...
Regular viewers of “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” on CNN, might be surprised at the venue that Dobbs chose for lunch not long ago: the Grill Room of the Four Seasons, a midtown bastion of the very same political and business “élites” that he denounces daily on his television program. The Four Seasons is the enduring commissary of the Old Guard, where Henry Kissinger waves to the former Citigroup C.E.O. Sandy Weill, there is limo-lock at the side door, and the regulars have their checks sent to the office. Dobbs’s Town Car left him at the door, on East Fifty-second Street, and the restaurant’s co-owner, Julian Nicolini, embraced him that day as warmly as when he welcomed, among others, Stephen Schwarzman, the chairman and C.E.O. of the Blackstone Group; Nelson Peltz, the C.E.O. of Trian Partners; Edgar Bronfman, Sr., the former chairman and C.E.O. of Seagram; and Mortimer Zuckerman, the real-estate developer and publisher of the News. Nicolini led Dobbs to one of five choice banquettes, and Dobbs settled in, looking very much at home.....
..... In 1981, he divorced his wife. The following year, he married Debi Lee Segura, a sports anchor and a reporter for CNN; in 1988, Segura gave birth to twin girls. Dobbs bought his farm in Sussex, New Jersey, a ninety-minute commute to CNN’s studios in Manhattan, where he raised and rode horses, joined a country club, and collected guns. (His two sons, both businessmen, live in nearby Sparta; his daughters were recently accepted at Harvard.)
On the air, Dobbs celebrated capitalism and helped conjure the Internet bubble of the nineties. In the 2000 book “The Fortune Tellers,” Howard Kurtz wrote that “Moneyline,” like CNBC’s “Squawk Box” and much of the financial press, sought “a nonstop flow of tips, touts, picks, and pans to lure consumers with the idea that they just might get in on the Next Big Thing.” CNN billed “Moneyline” as the business-news program watched “by more C.E.O.’s than any other,” and its audience was so demographically desirable that CNN was able to charge advertisers some of the steepest cost-per-thousand rates in television.
Dobbs flew on a private plane and befriended the well-to-do—among them Henry Kravis, the billionaire and leverage-buyout specialist. He accepted speaking fees to appear at corporate retreats. He was paid to do promotional videos for Shearson Lehman Brothers, Paine Webber, and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, and when these relationships became public and Dobbs was asked if this wasn’t a conflict of interest, he said, “That is a silly, silly question. Would I do it if I thought I were compromising anything?” ....
....in May of 1999, while Dobbs was anchoring “Moneyline.” CNN, like Fox and MSNBC, had planned to cover a speech that Clinton was giving in Littleton, Colorado, after the shootings at Columbine High School, where two teen-age gunmen killed twelve students and a teacher, and then committed suicide. Clinton’s speech fell in the middle of Dobbs’s program, and the broadcast cut away to Colorado. Kaplan was watching at home and heard Clinton say to the families, “There’s something you all can do,” and then the President was cut off and CNN returned to “Moneyline.” Dobbs says that he considered the President’s speech a staged event, and ordered his producer to return to the studio. Kaplan told me, “Tell me what journalistic reason there was not to cover the President at Columbine soon after the shootings? Everyone else was covering it. . . . There are two sides to almost every story in the world, but not to that one.” Kaplan countermanded Dobbs’s order, and Dobbs, at that point, looked into the camera and told his audience, “CNN President Rick Kaplan wants us to return to Littleton.”
Well - we haven't watched television in over 15 years - but I would chosen to watch Clinton's speech over Dobbs. Very self-important - our little man is.

That's it! He is not a journalist after all. We see the monster hehind the mask.

I fully support further efforts toward a massive union resurgence; unfortunately, unions are not without their sins either.
It just so happens that the current scale is weighted heavily in the favor of corporations, much to the downfall of the middle class and our economy in general. Perhaps, with the additional accommodations afforded to unions by Obama will come more responsible actions than shown by corporations. Yeah, right.
There's less than a handful of problems about Dobbs cast.
1. Mentions that non-union workers are required to pay dues < so what.
2. A "windfall" means closed shop dues collection in an open shop environment under PLA rules < no it doesn't, income is subjective.
3. Labor union donors are mentioned but short of pay-to-play ethics contradictions, Dobbs stops there < where was Dobbs when Bush The Impaler implemented Faith Based initiatives that were based on donor involvement?
The show has this man twisted up and confused. His belly aching is obsessive and compulsive. He has stopped thinking. He needs a new gig. The mexicans have no reason to invade, and if he continues to equate Democratics to Republicans he will loose all credibility.

methinks the governments idea of 'a level playing field' is quite different than the rest of our perceptions of what 'a level playing field' will look like.
So forcing people to not have a choice in how much money is taken by the union that speaks on their behalf helps the middle class how?

Dobbs is spiraling down fast into dillusional paranoia. Did you see his show today - Obama theatening democracy - taking away right to bare arms - colluding with Mexico to undermine american citizens. This has got to stop Lou. Your time has come and gone. Get with the times or get out of the studio.
One more thing - your 'show' is not a broadcast so stop calling it that - you're on cable, and when i get a la carte programming you won't be on cable either.

I'm old enough to remember these TV ads. What a shame that the workers of America are no longer valued, and that it's so difficult to buy anything made in the USA (except, of course, for weapons).

where Dobbs is coming from. During the Bush admin, I always tuned into Dobbs program because he absolutly hammered the Bush admin. on all fronts nightly. I have also listened to him speak out in support of unions many times in the past. Me and Dobbs' program do not have a very long history, but it seems to me that he thinks his job is to just bash down what ever administration is in office, which is a weak game to bring to the public. Unless one thinks that being an "independent" means hammering Repubs and Dems all the time whichever is in the majority. I expect more from him, and of course I regularly let him know nowdays.
Brings out facts twisted to support his attacks on a person.

I was watching CNN and this guy came on. He ran down his stories with a sneer, every one slanted to the Republican talking points of the day.
I couldn't stand it and had to change the channel. Mind you, I can watch O'Reilly. Dobbs poses as a genuine news show but he misinforms his viewers.
And all the while, Dobbs keeps our flag behind him, as if "Dobbs is the REAL American"!

Dobbs is irrelevant, like all stupid Reslugs now. He reads right from the daily Reslug talking points.
Lets not forget that unions were created as a tool to keep government out of business, and still keep workers rights. Capitalism is responsible for the formation of unions and wants nothing to do with them out of greed. Big Business cant have it both ways they need to chose government regulations for workers or unions.
it when workers organize to insure that the wages that they make are fair and the conditions under which they work are not inhumane. Lou Dobbs hates all of this, especially because instead of all the profits being generated by labor going into the pockets of the owners, some of it goes into workers' pockets. This, to Lou Dobbs is a very bad thing. Horrible. A crime. And something that Americans shouldn't put up with. My question for Lou Dobbs is, who are you talking to, Lou? Your owner friends who live to maximize profits for themselves at everybody else's expense, or to the American people who actually do the work that generates the profits? All of your speech rings totally false when you claim to be addressing people who work, normal, ordinary, every day Americans who are suffering because of the abuses exploited by self-serving and greedy business interests.
