As expected, the talking heads over at Fox and CNN are being just as dismissive of the Occupy Wall Street movement as they were supportive of the AstroTurf "tea party" movement and Liz Trotta gave us another example on Fox this Saturday, comparing the OWS list of demands to the Unabomber manifesto.

TROTTA: Well, the media's really in search of itself. I advise anybody who has a sense of humor left about this to go to OccupyWallStreet.com and what you will read is the ravings of what sounds like the Unabomber, and also the use of the word meta, a Greek degree of language, which I won't go into at the moment. But these people have plenty of words to say, but again, and I don't mean to sound, just repeat what everybody else has said, but it is unclear what they want. But it's certainly better going down there and carrying signs than going out and hitting the pavement for a job.

Now, what's interesting about this is that media seems, the liberal media is being accused of setting this up for Obama, so that he can use this as a, these people as a wedge against the Republicans in the election. I don't know if that's true or not, but the unions couldn't, the public service unions couldn't wait to get down there last week.

I'd say there's a fair amount of projection going on there given the fact that Fox and CNN did relentlessly promote the "tea party" in order to help get Republicans elected during the mid-term elections. So far the accusations made by Trotta here on how this movement was started are coming from one place in the media, and that's Fox.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Please donate to our #OWS Solidarity Pizzas #occupies because the 1%ers are very nervous.

Meanwhile this Saturday, the panel on Chris Hayes' new show on MSNBC discussed the equally dismissive coverage we saw from CNN's Erin Burnett of the protests as well. (Video below the fold)

she's a shrill harridan at best. She's likely of the very group that OWS is railing against. So of course she wouldnt get it. She feels threatened and is lashing out. Good it's working.

people are in the streets not for obama but because obama didn't accomplish nearly as much as they wanted him to. they finally realized he wasn't going to fix all these things by himself. i'd say many of them are there because they're fed up with obama too.

Well of course they are saying this is a set up for Obama. They are constantly aching for a fight. It is a centerpiece of what gives their life meaning.
What did you think they were going to say? That is what the right wing does, totally predictable, hackneyed, glittering generalities. Some people think that is intelligent discussion worth listening too. I must say that coming to the point of being able to predict it before it happens has left me finding it pretty shallow.

and I was surprised at the ideological diversity. There were socialists (even some people from the Communist Party holding up a Revolution sign), there were libertarians too. I saw some Ron Paul folks, some Alex Jones fans. It is extremely diverse, and I personally think that if this movement were to grow that would be an issue in the long run. Right now though, people agree on a number of issues like the bailouts of the banks, our socialization of their losses and there seems to be a decent amount of knowledge and well reasoned critiques of Fed policies, which I know is the stomping grounds of many libertarians.

My critique of the left is that we, in general, don't often say what we are FOR. We do a pretty good job of critiquing capitalism or neoliberalism but don't always offer up coherent alternatives. Well, here in Chicago they have been holding general assemblies every day where people across the ideological spectrum can offer up and debate policy suggestions. I like the fact that so many working people are thinking critically about these issues and are using their creativity to come up with alternatives. My biggest worry is that people on the left will try and drive people into elite controlled channels.

In the early part of the 20th century we on the left were not an appendage of the Democratic Party. The Socialist Party got over 6% of the vote. Other left of center parties had support beyond their numbers and large parts of the left were, rightly or wrongly, skeptical about voting and electoral politics all together. The labor unions were much stronger and militant and they weren't the property of any one party. We had mass social movements, a lot like OWS, that were radical and non-partisan. There was a culture on the left, mutual aid societies, different visions of society. The Democratic Party was nothing more than one vehicle among many towards change, if the Democrats wanted the left's support they had to earn it. I would like to see something like that again.

Thom Hartmann, amongst many others, has questioned whether or not we should have any radical notions, that we should channel this energy towards the Democratic Party. He mentioned the French Revolution as a danger as far as trying to radically change society and create new institutions. Don't these institutions have to prove their legitimacy? Are we not past the point where these institutions and parties' existence are assumed? If we are like the French Revolution it is in that so many people are left out of the political process and ignored. If we are alike it is because our "leaders" and the institutions they control have crumbled and have proven themselves to be illegitimate. If we are at a point similar to the French Revolution than I would say that we the general public are all the Sans Culottes. We don't need some people, "leaders" or Democrats, to turn the guns on us like Robespierre did when the Sans Culottes got in the way.

I see a lot of danger in directing the activism toward the Democrats, given that the party has a horrible track record on these issues in recent decades, is corrupt, controlled by moneyed interests and the neoliberals are still the majority in the party at the national level. He wants to reform the party by moving it left, which might make it ONE option in the future, but as of now it is a dangerous path to go down.

Seems to me that it would very dangerous to get people to channel this activism towards the Democrats. Looks like a recipe to get people disillusioned and to waste their activism. IF the Democrats can reform their party, again, maybe it can be one vehicle for change. IF, the task is daunting and will take time. Until then, I would stay away and continue the bottom up organizing and use other means. The elites, the neoliberals in the Democratic Party, would like nothing more than to take control of the movement. OWS is now independent of the Democrats, which threatens their power. They'd love to change that and to take control of the movement. Please folks, those reading this involved in OWS, think critically about going down that route.

That would have allowed me to point out that they spoke out against animal cruelty generally but have not been specific about demanding freedom for our non human neighbors on this fine planet we are bespoiling while enslaving them to our insatiable but curable protein misfixes.

Every comment of yours is an attack against someone personally or some pretentious, annoying put down. You come across as a miserable, angry person. It might be good for you to get off your lazy, arrogant ass and get down to an OWS meeting. Get out, meet new people, have an actual conversation with a living human being in person. Its ok to have emotions and to care about things. Really, it beats being a miserable, judgmental prick.

you clearly are a miserable person. Miserable people go to political sites and say next to nothing of substance. Miserable people come to sites like this and spend 95% of the time mocking people (anonymously, online, to people you'll never meet). You tend to do it to people to your left and tend to focus on people who have a passion for actual issues (or aren't as articulate as you'd like, like the OWS guy who talked with Fox News). I'm not trying to zing you, just sick of seeing your pretentious, self-aggrandizing attacks against people. You "boost your readership" by getting others to defend who you are attacking or getting into a back and forth like this. People who are happy with their lives don't act in that way. Again, I'm not trying to zing you. You really do come across as a miserable prick. Say whatever you want in response, I could give a damn. Sometimes people do ignore me but at least I come here for a reason, to talk and read about issues that impact me.

I had a good conversation/debate with multiple posters a few nights ago on free trade and another on Obama's drug policy. If you can give me a link of you saying ANYTHING of substance with people here and them responding, post it. I can't imagine going to a site for no other reason than to try some lame, "witty" put downs.

First, ignore it completely. Then when the story becomes too big to ignore, totally marginalize all the occupiers. They're all a bunch of pot-smoking, bongo-playing, lazy-ass, dirty stinking hippies that just need to get a goddamn job.

When i heard that from CNN a few days ago, i almost spit coffee out my nose!

We might want to ask CNN - What will it take to make the tea parties end? Please make them stop CNN!

CNN, Occupy Movements will end when the 99% are represented in government.

It will also take a number of things, like the following:
1) Returning to 'the people' the tax money that Wall Street embezzled, and putting that money towards saving those that were directly affected.
2) Prosecution and conviction of those at the top responsible for embezzling that money.
3) Getting the money, lobbyists, and corporate bribery out of politics
4) Passing the American Jobs Act and reviving the consumer economy

Occupy Wall Street also has a manifesto CNN, if you care to read it on air, you can start to answer your question.

masters greatest fear: the People remembering just exactly who possesses all the power in this country. The plutocrats and their political puppets can only get what they want by causing the People to forget and, in forgetting, cede away their powers. The more that the People finally start remembering themselves, the worse it is going to be for the gangsters and criminals who have been parasitizing the nation for such a long time. The propagandists are going to wage an all-out manipulation offensive on this one. They are going to lie, misrepresent, push fear, ridicule whatever it takes to manipulate the empty headed and non-critical thinkers into accepting the plutocrats /criminals' agenda. Try as they will, I don't think it's going to do them any good.
