Lawrence O'Donnell didn't give Birther and recent Donald Trump fan Franklin Graham the kind of pass he got from Christiane Amanpour on This Week, but man, was this interview painful to watch. O'Donnell laid Graham's hypocrisy bare when it came to pretending that he didn't know full well that our President is a Christian, but he let him off the hook for the Birther nonsense, just like Amanpour did.

O'Donnell had an opportunity to really go after Graham when he gave his blathering answer as to whether he'd actually given up everything when he supposedly devoted his life to Christ, but he just allowed Graham to ramble on and make a fool of himself instead of a doing a little follow-up.

I don't know how much money the Grahams take in every year, but I imagine they're doing pretty well if they could afford to be flying Sarah Palin around on private jets awhile back.

Hey Frank, and what is so moral about Trump? Never-mind. You're just a garden variety racist lost and confused in your institutionalized world of double standards.

Simply another closeted American racist who happens to have a fucking bible in his hand.

Christ was for helping the poor and elderly and sick.... Obama kicks these vulnerable groups.

Christ threw the money changers out of the temple.... Obama and our Congress steal from us to give to the money changers.

Christ was killed for challenging power.... Obama tortures and kills those who challenge his power.

We continue to talk about personalities—Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama—although the heads of state or elected officials in Congress have become largely irrelevant. Lobbyists write the bills. Lobbyists get them passed. Lobbyists make sure you get the money to be elected. And lobbyists employ you when you get out of office. Those who hold actual power are the tiny elite who manage the corporations. Jacob S. Hacker and Paul Pierson, in their book “Winner-Take-All Politics,” point out that the share of national income of the top 0.1 percent of Americans since 1974 has grown from 2.7 to 12.3 percent. One in six American workers may be without a job. Some 40 million Americans may live in poverty, with tens of millions more living in a category called “near poverty.” Six million people may be forced from their homes because of foreclosures and bank repossessions. But while the masses suffer, Goldman Sachs, one of the financial firms most responsible for the evaporation of $17 trillion in wages, savings and wealth of small investors and shareholders, is giddily handing out $17.5 billion in compensation to its managers, including $12.6 million to its CEO, Lloyd Blankfein.

The massive redistribution of wealth, as Hacker and Pierson write, happened because lawmakers and public officials were, in essence, hired to permit it to happen. It was not a conspiracy. The process was transparent. It did not require the formation of a new political party or movement. It was the result of inertia by our political and intellectual class, which in the face of expanding corporate power found it personally profitable to facilitate it or look the other way. The armies of lobbyists, who write the legislation, bankroll political campaigns and disseminate propaganda, have been able to short-circuit the electorate.

As somebody who tries to follow the teachings of the philosopher rabbi, Yeshua of Nazareth, I have absolutely no use for Christianity, and I'm pretty sure ol' Yeshua would have none of it either.

Like the Old Testament, which is merely a justification used by nomadic herders to take over existing cultures and lands, the New Testament, particularly the Paulist crap, are only justifications for a priestly class and organized churches, with little to do with Jeebus' teaching.

Franklin would be thrown out of his temple with a swift sandal to his @ss. He is exactly what Yeshua was against, and it's a shame his followers have no idear that is the case.

I like your Christ. It's a shame so few Christians are like him.

I, too, have a serious problem with Paul, who was nothing more than a zealot who got Jesus' ministry completely wrong in a lot of areas. I think much of the bible is taken way, way out of context, and fundamentalists pick and choose which parts they want to interpret fundamentally.

Ask any fundamentalist if Jesus literally meant that we should gauge out our eyes if we look at a woman lustfully, and of course they'll answer "well no . . ."

That's a good point. I can't stress enough how much of a problem I have with Paul. Jesus says "judge not lest ye be judged," and then Paul's like "oh no, it's totally cool to judge because the Holy Spirit told me so . . ."

I don't pay any attention to him.

When the Jerusalem church admonished Paul for, “preaching to the Gentiles”, they weren't concerned that he was spreading the word to non – Jews, but rather, he was creating a story that would be acceptable to the Greek and Roman religious mind set – the Mystery Cults. Nothing in that would have been consistent with Jewish theology.
Very briefly, the Mystery Cults posited the son of a god and a mortal that championed human beings. He opposes evil and oppression - is denounced by the earthly powers who torment and kill him. He is then united with his god father. The gospel writer, Luke, was a follower of Paul.

My answer would be: Well, I didn't have him tortured and killed Big Daddio, that's for sure. While I'm on the subject, god is really big on punishing and killing kids isn't he? I mean, there's Jesus, his command to Abraham to sacrifice his son, his killing of every first born child of the Egyptians, the whole "limbo" thing for newborns who die before being baptised. Yeah, Big Daddio in the sky probably taught John Wayne Gacy everything he knows. I wish God would come back to Earth in human form, just long enough for the rest of us to strap him to a gurney and stick a needle in his arm. And if Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell, Mike Huckabee, and James Dobson are examples of HIS chosen ones, I'll take my chances in Hell.

Good point. It's rediculous that we even need to have this conversation. No one should have to face scrutiny on what their religious beliefs are. This happened with Al Smith (can't remember the year he ran) and JFK, although the big thing was the fact that they were Catholic.

JFK overcame it, but Al wasn't so fortunate. This country has had a long history of anti-anythingthatisnotprotestant. Even if Obama was a Muslim, it shouldn't matter.

Yes, there are "good" pastors out there - those who actually care about the people to whom they minister.

But as soon as the other kind of pastor opens his/her mouth about politics and express an opinion about either major party while in their pulpits on Sunday morning, all credibility is lost. Not all pastors do that, but enough do that it is a major problem. All pastors know full well, given the tax-free status they enjoy, that they suck at the government's teat, and they know that it is immoral, if not illegal, to preach politics. Yet they do it, and those who are best at it - huckabee, graham(s), schuller, robertson, beck, phelps, fallwell, osteen, hagee, roberts, parsley, etc., make a ton of money doing it. Unfortunately, they all have loyal followings who will do whatever they say, and that includes voting for a particular individual or party, expressing racism, expressing exclusionism (my god is better than your god), and denigrating other religious organizations.

Pastor graham is one of the worst of the worst - he is filthy rich, and he is listened to by gullible xtians who cannot think for themselves without the crutch of jeebus. His racism is palpable, and his stupid is right there for everyone to see and hear. His only claim to his status is through his daddy. He is truly a waste of skin and DNA.

When you think of the rapidly approaching demise of this once interesting nation (at least it was founded on interesting principles), there are going to be ample responsible parties, including a media steeped in collusion and cheap sensationalism and rampant stupidity born of religious fundamentalism, and in this short and terrifying segment, we have both proudly on display. I'd be tempted to call both of these men fools, but the horrible fact is that they are not. They are business people, churning up a fake story about a fake reverend worshiping a fake god, and all so that CNN can sell a few more units of deodorant on the next commercial segment.

And it comes down to one thing - money. Maybe his father wasn't a racist (many debate this - his crusades at one time segregated the crowd - but he later supported Civil Rights), but he was probably an anti-Semite, and BIlly Graham apologized for such comments. But was he being honest for just trying to save his ministry? Caught on tape, he claimed he didn't remember making such comments and it "wasn't how he felt?" Then why did you friggin' say it?
But no question this Franklin is a total jackwad. How preachers and Republicans get people to do things against their own interests to make others rich and powerful...that is a miracle, indeed. Although, like I've said before, if you can get people to believe in invisible beings in the sky, talking snakes, and that one day they will suddenly fly up into the clouds, I guess convicing them to vote for you isn't that big a challenge.

I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...

Is this controversy going to go on all the way up until the election?? Are the controversies put forth by Jesse Ventura in his new books really going to go ignored by this same media all the way up until the election?? Strange dichotomy there.

is what i call this circus.

as long as tools like o'donnell are given kudos for "reporting" on this kind of inconsequential bullshit, well, we will be stuck where we are. how is graham scamming his followers any different than what our peace prize president "bloody barack" obomber is doing? i can tell you, there is no difference, but what i can tell you is that you had better hope you have some change left in your pocket after the mandated profits go into the wallets of the insurco executives.

you do not effect reform by maintaining the status quo, you do not effect change by ordering drone strikes in another country (libya) without declaring war, or even utilizing the fig leaf that the war powers resolution provides.

who the hell cares where the emperor was born? and even if some whackos try to make an issue of it, so what? they get to vote just like the rest of us, as if it makes any difference. you do not lead a country by engaging in this kind of crap, you lead by doing what needs to be done and obomber is not doing that.

our president could have these people rocked so far back on their heels it would take them 20 years to get back up, but he doesn't, and why not? because he is too busy kow-towing to wall street, and maintaining american empire that is why not.

is glass-steagall back in force? no. do we still have over 700 overseas military bases? yes. this kind of story is trash, tripe, whatever. was matt taibbi not available? jeremy scahill? chris hedges? james galbraith? bill black?

this kind of garbage gets on the teevee because it would upset the applecart to report on something important, and if our beneficent emperor obomber was ding his job, well just like the shrub said, he would be making history and we would all be talking about it, but he is not, so we aren't.

Than for a camel to pass through an eye of a needle. Graham makes at least six figures a year and has that airplane; O'Donnell should have pinned Graham down on THAT little scam. No wonder he wanted to follow in Daddy's footsteps: he saw there was BIG money to be made. I have no respect for this man AT ALL. How many PEOPLE has he helped? Not one that I know of. Yet he seems to like a man who's been married three times and disses a President who is happily married to ONE woman.

to keep the under-educated, credulous DONATING fools to keep ON donating money that they really cannot not afford to give away, especially to a hypocrital, greedy "minister of the lord".

I used to belong to a church where the priest always preached politics from the pulput rather than how to be a better Catholic. It was an ethnic church and this man used to tell his parishioners that they would never be able to get a good job because this particular ethnic group has always been discriminated against. This attitude really pissed me off because I had two daughters who were in grade school and I didnt want them listening to this self-defeating shit! (Fortunately, they grew up to have careers as an engineer and an interior designer.) He was the one who REALLY turned me off organized religion.

I always hated the sermon when he said the bible says for wives to be submissive to their husbands. And he preached it every phukking year!! Another thing I didnt want my girls to hear. I used to get really mad when he preached that submissive crap. So much so, that one time, one of my daughters leaned over to me and said Mom, calm down. She said I was grinding my teeth, which I didnt even know I was doing!

Show me a "man of God" who has his own private jet and makes half a million a year and I'll show you a phukking hypocrit. If that asshole really was a man of God, he would live a much simpler life and give most of his money to the poor. And we all know THAT aint gonna happen.

Ok. I'll get down from my soapbox now. Im calm.

Jack Camwell's picture

Wow, sounds like you had a terrible parish priest. I think that guy might be a relic from pre-Vatican II with the kind of stuff he was preaching.

I'm Catholic as well, so I'm well versed in the hypocrisy that some parishes display. I send my kids to Catholic school, and one way they get you to donate to the church is by giving you discounts on tuition. If you're a "practicing Catholic," they make you pay over $1,000 less in tuition, but the catch is that you have to donate to the collection plate.

I've often been a fierce opponent of such hypocrisy, but I understand that such hypocrisy is everywhere. The best one can do is raise one's kids to be respectful to authority, but at the same time that they should never, ever blindly follow authority.

Any priest that preaches submissiveness of women should not be giving sermons.

Eric.Arthur.Blair's picture

I recently found out (almost forty years after the fact) how the Catholic grade school my parents sent me to kept the little colored children out of its classrooms. We were in a strongly euro-ethnic neighborhood - the parish was named after a Polish saint - and any time a Black or Hispanic family tried to enroll a child, they were told that classes were bilingual and Polish language instruction was a prerequisite for enrollment. There was a time when that was true, but it was discontinued when my father was in third grade, which was around 1925.

This was another parish where they tried to pretend that Vatican II never happened. I am now a recovering Cathoholic.

I recognize that it’s probably time to offer thoughtful, analytic assessments of Graham and his ilk, but just for the moment, it’s difficult not to just stand in awe of such absolute, unalloyed lunacy. This man is profoundly psychologically ill, and probably has a variety of personality disorders, if not outright schizophrenia…but there he is, with the only bona fides for venting his poisonous spleen on national television the fact that he is a devout follower of an imaginary friend. There’s just no horrible deed or word that you can’t get away with purveying if you just get yourself called Reverend.

What bothers me about this is not so much that Obama's faith of choice is questioned (it is bothersome that someone has to answer for how they choose to worship), but that the notion that a particular faith is being used pejoratively. They say "Obama is a Muslim!" like it's an insult.

It's this kind of ignorance that relegates interfaith dialogue to the intelligent few. If people would stop being so damned zealous about their religious beliefs, I think the world would be a bit more harmonious. But of course, that is just a hopeless hope.

I was disappointed with O'Donnell's response to graham until the next segment, when O'Donnell took on limpdick, who had opened his stupid mouth about what jesus 'takes'. O'Donnell went on to stick jesus up limpdick's ass, using scripture to remind us that the rich who don't give everything they own to the poor have no place in heaven. So my take is that O'Donnell didn't say that to graham, knowing how well he would cover the subject in the limpdick segment. O'Donnell left a challenge to limpdick to rebut, asking him to cite anything in the bible that exonerates the rich, expecially limpdick and graham, and all the other bible quoting pieces of shit who lie to us, especially on the right.

Franky went astray for a while back when , seems he fried a few brain cells too many .

O'Donnell did a good job , the guy is fearless and will take you head on no matter who you are , I like it . Graham was exposed for what he is , a racist Republican , a hypocrite and none too bright .

The best 10 minutes of this exceptionally good Lawrence O'Donnell show was when he quoted the New Testament to provide Jesus' answers to Rush Limbaugh's question, "What would Jesus take?"

That, even more than this Franklin Graham take-down, was the Evangelical Christian Republican't/Tea Bagger take-down of all time.

I hope C&L posts a thread on that with the full video and transcript linked.

I agree completely. That was the clip I was expecting to see here, not the Graham clip.

Don't get me wrong - I like O'Donnell and his (usually) hard-hitting interviews. But he pulled back on this one.

He could have followed up and asked Graham, if he truly believes in Christ, why then has he not given up all his possessions, as Christ says one should, to go to Heaven. O'Donnell even quoted the relevant passage from the New Testament to Graham.

Especially given the anti-Muslim things Graham has said in the past, O'Donnell should have confronted this pseudo-Christian. Graham is just another right winger who uses Christ to make money. IMHO.

I had to turn that off. When these "holy men" ramble on, I can't listen.

Is it our Black President brings out the "True Colors" in so many Americans?
The rationality is obvious, Racism!
What a laugh ..... Donald Trump's advisers are using Donald as the Republicans SCAPE-GOAT! He is so out of line with his accusation against the President. No one is taking him seriously as he lost credibility! He totally sounds like a big fool!
Trump should throw away some of his millions on campaining for the Presidency. He will never win!
We see the republicans have no one that is competent to lead this nation! They are all talk, without
solutions!
Not only has Obama more intellegence than Trump - He has a lot more class!

What a dick. I am so sick of these fake Christians. This is shameful. I hope this judgmental asshole burns in hell.

verylargehat's picture

What a fucking douche this fake minister is. I love Lawrence O'Donnell, but he was way too gracious to this hypocrite at the end of the interview.

can you imagine what the uk would be like now if the pilgrim fathers had decided to stay in england?

This Reverend, Franklin Graham is a total hypercrit! He interpreits "we are all god's children" as, only if you are a christian! He is a preacher, that's all he knows! Evil is done in the guise of religion!

What a squishy wishy washy stuttering box of hair.
No wonder he likes The Donald.

The son of a preacherman who can't even get out a full sentence
has got absolutely nothing to say and says it badly.

Only 603 days, 14482 hours, and 868944 minutes until the end of the world!
