Lawrence O'Donnell Rips into Liz Cheney For Dover AFB Criticism

Lawrence O'Donnell tears into Liz Cheney for her remarks criticizing President Obama for his visit to Dover AFB. Liz Cheney lies again. Chip off the old block.
O'DONNELL: When President Obama honored our Afghanistan war dead by taking part in a military ritual at Dover Air Force Base yesterday, it was easily predictable that a Republican would criticize him for it. And in our fourth story on the Countdown, the former Vice President's pet attack dog, his daughter Liz Cheney, has now done just that. And once again, she wasn't going to let the facts get in the way.
On the John Gibson radio show yesterday, Ms. Cheney was rehashing her father's fact-free critique of President Obama's war in Afghanistan, and then Mr. Gibson asked her about the President's appearance at Dover Air Force Base.
LIZ CHENEY (RADIO AUDIO): I don't know why he went to Dover. I mean, I think that clearly it is very important for a commander-in-chief, whenever he can in whatever way it possible, to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers, our fallen military folks. But, I think, you know, what President Bush used to do was do it without the cameras, and I don't understand sort of showing up with the White House Press Pool with photographers and asking the family if you can take pictures. I just... that's really hard for me to get my head around—I think it's an honorable and important thing for us to pay tribute. There's no greater sacrifice people make to the nation. But, it was a surprising way for the President to choose to do it.
O'DONNELL: As we mentioned yesterday, President Bush never went to Dover Air Force Base to honor dead American soldiers on their final journey. And Vice President Cheney... never did either.
Hey Liz, have you ever lost a relative in battle? I have. My cousin Johnny, West Point graduate like his father before him. I wish the President or the Vice President had met his casket on the way home.
You know what 'never' means, Liz? It means zero. It means that in over seven years of two wars, your dad never left the comfort of his White House office or the Vice President's mansion and got himself up to Dover to bear witness to how his warmongering fell on families of dead American soldiers. Never, not once.
Liz, don't let your dad do this to you. Don't let him parade you onto the stage to defend the indefensible. Let him suffer the full weight of the shame that we know he must feel when he watches Barack Obama do what he never had the decency to do.
President Bush did meet with grieving military families in private, and he went to military hospitals to visit the wounded. As for Ms. Cheney's reference to cameras, the policy of banning media coverage of coffins continued unaltered throughout the Bush administration. Thus, even families that wanted media coverage of their loved one's ceremony were not given any choice in the matter.
Furthermore, President Obama did not make any special requests to any of yesterday's eighteen families as Ms. Cheney implies, I mean lies. The vast majority of those families had already made their individual decisions about media coverage under the current policy before the notification that President Obama would be part of the ceremony.
As for Dick Cheney, when he was Vice President, he sometimes met with the war wounded, but like President Bush, he never went to Dover, either. Never.
And a reminder, Mr. Cheney successfully sought out five deferments from the draft to avoid having to serve his country in the Vietnam War. Mr. Cheney's fifth and final deferment a result of his wife's becoming pregnant with Liz. Mr. Cheney was granted a 3A status, the hardship exemption by his draft board, which was available to men with children at that time.

Lawrence is damn right in calling out Liz Cheney on her repugnant remarks. Her father is a draft dodging chicken hawk (and worse) and she has a lot of damn gall to chastise anybody, let alone the President. What are her credentials? Having been an Army grunt assigned to a USAF base I can tell you that the Security Police are quite particular about the title, since their responsibilities go far beyond the duties of most Military Police units.

You are right, President Obama never served in the armed forces of the United States, but he also never received 5 draft deferments either. It should also be pointed out, that there is no constitutional requirement for any candidate for Office of the President to have served in the military.

They will go out of their way to suggest a military solution for any problem, I'm surprised they did'nt declare war on hurricanes after Katrina "attacked" America, all the while none of them have ever served their country or if they did, it was in a way where they did not have to really do any dangerous stuff (Bush).

Look, these vultures have had their entire, privileged lives funded and supported by the blood profits of war and oil. It is all they know. They have been surrounded since birth with people, money and ideas of morality that are driven by the exploitation of both natural and human resources for fun and profit. And their lifetimes of "power" have caused them to believe they are exempt from the rules and the moral imperatives that govern the rest of the "masses." A good part of the reason they got away with all of this is that the MSM is now another subsidiary of this deluded group that truly believes they are "exceptional", that America is "exceptional" and that we can do whatever the Hell we want. Rather than being brought to task for their sustained abuses of power, the sissies in the media have just trotted along like the glory-seeking lapdogs they are.

Bush nor Cheney did not seem to see that it was important for them to go to Dover AFB and perform the Honor Ceremony for a fallen military member. It is the highest respect the military and the President can give to a military member and their family for the loss of that warrior's life. Shame! Participation in that ceremony for all to view means respect for all of the military and its mission.
Obama would do the troops justice if he got them out of Afghanistan. If our country really still wants to get their war on, send them to Saudi Arabia. They are the fucks that attacked us for christ sake.

The terrorists train and live in Afghanistan and rural Pakistan. The Saudi's provide money but the training is in these areas. The US needs to focus on cutting off individual Saudi Arabians that finance the terrorists but the US needs to be able to make sure the terror camps are not up and running in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Right now Afghanistan has no central government that the US can depend on to break up the terrorist camps that can form there.

Not only did they not show up for the falling soldier for the ceremony, but if the soldier were in critical condition, they were ship out of Iraq so they couldn't be counted as dead from the Iraq war. It was all about the numbers! Bean counting from the original phrase that applied to war time casualty. Many of the soldier could have been save if they were sent to the navy hospital in the ship off the coast in the middle east.

I feel that Obama going to Dover was the right thing to do. The experience of seeing our war dead return should definitely be part of his consideration in deciding the next course of action in Afghanistan (and Iraq for that matter), particularly for a president who didn't serve personally.
But why the "iconic" photo plastered everywhere? I'm not against the media showing pictures of war dead returning because we should all understand the sacrifices being made for us. But something about including Obama in the picture so it could be published everywhere is intended to serve political purposes beyond honoring our servicemen and women, isn't it?
I think it would have honored them more to go, report the visit and the reason for it, but to not use it as a photo op.
If the media knew obama was going to be there I think they would of sent a hell of a lot of reporters. Every time I've seen this it the same angle from the same camara. I don't believe this was a photo op obama never seemed to acknowdge the camara.
I think we are so into the business of poltics we can no longer tell a honest to god "long shot camara man got lucky" from a staged photo op.
I can see Obama out of the blue going to experence such a thing so he can widen his understanding of the war to make the best choice he possably can. Could it be just a photo op yes, but it just doesn't have the feel of a photo op to me.
You think maybe it might be so that the Republicans can't lie and say he wasn't there? Or maybe because we have a free press and photographers have the right to record the event?
Because, given the FACT that neither the former President nor Vice-President ever did the same thing, maybe - just MAYBE - the American people would like to see that President Obama actually does find the time to do things like this.

In 1969, I was in the Air Force, and stationed in Michigan. One day, I was tapped for honor guard duty for a military funeral in a town near the base. The soldier had been killed in combat in Vietnam only a few days previously. The guy was only twenty years old. His young widow was sobbing the entire time during the ceremony. I won't be forgetting that day any time soon.
Having said that, I do not regret having been there. President Obama did the right thing.
