Laura Ingraham pulls out the "Obama was the most liberal Senator" canard on Fox News Sunday while discussing his potential pick for a Supreme Court nominee. If memory serves that talking point didn't work out so well for them this past election but that doesn't stop Ingraham from continuing to beat that dead horse. She also has some wonderful advice for the GOP. The hell with the middle.

Ingraham: There are a lot of moderate Republicans out there giving advice saying okay the party needs to the middle. We need to embrace these new ideas and okay, interesting debate. The question is how did the Democrats gain power in recent years? By going to the middle? Democrats gained power by going to the most liberal Senator in the U.S. Senate and they ran him for the Presidency and they won. They were relentlessly attacking George Bush for several years from the left. They didn't move to the middle. And the idea that Republicans now have to move to the middle, what beyond John McCain's middle, I don't know, is ridiculous. The Republican party has to grow the party with new ideas and effective communication and I haven't seen a lot of that lately.

I'll agree with her on one thing. I haven't seen any new ideas out of any of them either.

So, just how collectively delusional does a group like the modern GOP have to be to self-destruct in such a spectacular fashion? Is it some sort of mass hysteria among the party faithful?

Maybe, but I'm beginning to formulate a more cynical view of the party apparatchiks' behavior: pure greed and self interest. All the Republican spokespersons like Ingraham, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. make a pretty good living deceiving the mentally challenged party faithful. So why bite the hand that feeds you by confronting your followers with the truth, that your party is marginalized and even despised by a large portion of the electorate? It's so much easier (and more lucrative) to keep feeding the flames of their delusion.

They probably know it will all crash and burn at some point (or even that it is in the process of doing so now), but so what? They can easily live on their ill gotten gains after everything disintegrates. Why should they care about the fate of their deluded followers or what they might do in their desperation?

The party of the rich & bigoted have the White Southern voter & the Mormon Corridor left. Hispanics, Blacks, the young & educated have been lost by the GOP. There is no Big Tent for the GOP & there isn't going to be one. Sadly, we need a viable two-party system, but it appears the GOP is satisfied with lip service & a following of their 25% hard core conservative base.

I'd think with leaders like Hannity and Limpballs the GOP'd want
all the professional Bush-style lying revisionist bastards they can get at this point.

The GOP is near empty, since Bush overreacted and treated 200 fanatical Muslims in a cave under Osama bin-Ladin like the whole Japanese Military machine of WWII and spent a hundred times what FDR did to wipe out the enemy.

Poor George Bush. He's never, ever been successful at anything but being a drunken jerkoff and now he even took a steamy crap on his mentors, the republicans.

keep coming up with ideas. Just quit pushing the radical mentally challenged to take up arms against those that have better ideas. Get out of the media.

Does she want more new ideas for her party like the Project for a NEW American Century? You mean those kind of ideas? Ideas that are full of hubris and cause the rest of the world to hate America more than it already does for its pursuit of Empire?

Fox News Alert's picture

"There are a lot of moderate Republicans out there giving advice saying okay the party needs to the middle."

Who are you kidding! There's hardly any moderate Republicans at all let alone lots of them giving advice.

The GOP will continue to shrink to the point where they are a Southern and rural party. Look for the formation of a coalition consisting of disenchanted progressives to break from the Democrats. Both sides will then try to pick off enough Democrats support their given agenda.

Bigmama's picture

I would love to see a new progressive party with influence and a spine to become a mainstay in Washington. Perhaps, then, the democrats will see how much they had enabled the nazi republican party to damage this country to the extent they did.

Republicans are toast.

The Whig Party went through similar death-throws in the 1850’s. The difference from a historical perspective is the longevity of both the Republican and Democratic parties. Both have been around for over 150 years. Though nearly 100 political parties have come and gone, I think the implosion of the Republicans is unprecedented. They seem to take pride in the fact that they are uncompromising – and are going to appeal to their 20% base right up to the very end.

The interesting question then becomes, if they are to go the way of the Whigs, what will replace them?

Our political system is dependent upon a two-party system (unfortunate, but that’s the way it has worked for 200 years.) Maybe the Dems will splinter? I doubt the Repubs will be able to effectively reorganize.

In the past, successful political parties have usually evolved to counter unpopular political trends (i.e. slavery, presidential power like the Jacksonians, prohibition, etc.) The current trend is to pit the Liberal vs Conservative, but this is mostly semantics. As much as Faux would like you to believe it, the political divide under these terms is illusionary. I don’t see a two-party system evolving from this division.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Bigmama's picture

and definitely worth watching. However, IMHO, there is a very real difference between liberal and conservative (the real conservatives, not the neocon nazi trash we've been witness to the last several years). Both, of course, want the best for their families, the best education for their children, and the best guarantee of good health care. Individuals from both camps will fight and fight hard to succeed in life. However, I feel that a government that provides a national healthcare system, national (and reliable) childcare, real education (as oppose to the NCLB garbage), an ethical standard of behavior for corporations and companies, and provide to its citizens the security of knowing that the best aid will be available quickly in natural/man-made disasters, etc., does require a much more liberal/progressive bent.

Take away the obvious polarizing talking-points (abortion, immigration, etc) and I don’t think the average person could tell you the difference between what conservative or liberal really means. The terms have been corrupted over the years, and used to create divide where it didn’t exist before.

To me, the end result of either philosophy taken to its extreme is destruction. Conservatives, taken to their logical extreme, want status-quo at all costs. They will fight to keep things constant and are afraid of anything that threatens their existence. The ultimate result is stagnation. Liberals are unhappy with the status-quo and wish to implement change and do away with the current status (in one form or another). The ultimate end-result is chaos.

We don’t live in a world this simple though. Any given Conservative or Liberal (whatever that ends up meaning), will want some things to change, and some things to stay the same.

Like you though, I think it is long past time for a new progressive party to do away with the old and stale policies that have led to where we are now. The pendulum needs to swing back to the left. I just don’t know how an effective political party will evolve from that need. Repubs are gone, and Dems are too entrenched to instigate the change we need.

BTW - I also agree with you about ”true” conservatives vs the neocon trash. They are the ones that usurped and led to the destruction of their party.

ronspri's picture
FNA

You are on the money here. There are few to no Republicans telling them to be more moderate. It's everybody else that is saying that! The independents and democrats. Most of the country sees them as too far right. Matters not though.

We all know that all these listening tours or rebrandings are going to decide that the people decided that we should continue on our predatory capitalist, social darwinist crusade. Maybe use some "new words" to describe things. Give it some more emotional impact(like they haven't already worn that to the core).

I can honestly say that there are a few areas where I agree with conservatives. Some places I would be willing to compromise to see progress. But this absolutist, authoritarian, talk show host clown circus makes progress with conservatives impossible. They are killing themselves...so be it.

I heartily agree. Maybe Republicans should have to move to the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

The Doldrums: "This region is noted for calm periods when the winds disappear altogether, or are light and shifting. Hurricanes originate in this region. Because of the unpredictable weather patterns, the Doldrums became notorious with sailors because this region's periods of deadly calm could trap ships for days or weeks on end as they waited for enough wind to power their sails."

Yeah...as in "Going NOWHERE fast."

"The US has an army of 90,000 soldiers in Afghanistan and is spending $100bn a year, but has still been unable to defeat 20,000-25,000 Taliban who receive no pay at all." - Patrick Cockburn

in this case the "Elephant Latitudes" is fitting.

from Wikipedia:
Horse latitudes or Subtropical High are subtropic latitudes between 30 and 35 degrees both north and south. This region, under a ridge of high pressure called the subtropical high, is an area which receives little precipitation and has variable winds mixed with calm.
The term horse latitudes supposedly originates from the days when Spanish sailing vessels transported horses to the West Indies. Ships would often become becalmed in mid-ocean in this latitude, thus severely prolonging the voyage; the resulting water shortages would make it necessary for crews to throw their horses overboard.

The term might be derived from the "dead horse" ritual, a practice in which the seaman would parade a straw-stuffed effigy of a horse around the deck before throwing it overboard. Seamen were often paid partly in advance before a long voyage (see Beating a dead horse), and the "dead horse" was this period of time (usually a month or two). The ceremony was to celebrate having worked off the "dead horse" debt. As European west bound shipping would reach the subtropics at about the time the "dead horse" was worked off, the region became associated with the ceremony.

Way to go Laura, keep talking like that along with your leader Rush and the democratics will rain a very long time.

Liberal? Bwahahahahahahaha......that's not bad!

concernedcanuck perhaps we have misunderstood what a libearal is, or maby the definition of being liberal has morphed into something of a bastardised version of what it once was, looking at obamas version of being liberal seems to mean being right of center , or a centerest , trickle down policys of giveing buckets of money to the rich bankers, and promissing jobs he will never deliver on, continueing wars that were based on lies , supreshion of constitutional rights that were taken from the american people by bush and obamas own voteing for thoes bills bush needed to keep his wars going , and obstruction of justice by ignoreing war crimes and helping to cover them up by saying we must move on and let the past acts of bush be forgotten , did he really mean it when he said he didnt believe the bush admistration commited any crimes?

While some Democrats are of the opinion that President Obama is being TOO bipartisan in his accommodations to Republicans and they are disappointed he isn't playing hardball with them, I believe his highly visible efforts to include Republicans in the policy making process is illuminating REPUBLICAN OBSTRUCTIONISM and increasing the likelihood that the 2010 elections will result in a filibuster-proof Democratic Senate majority.

Should it become necessary for Democrats to go it alone and institute policy changes with zero Republican support, the vast majority of Americans will see their actions as necessary and justified because Republicans have been deliberately trying to undermine President Obama's efforts to fix the problems that eight years of failed Republican leadership created for Americans and America.

In addition, the self-promoting and purposefully antagonistic histrionics of mercenary Republican provocateurs, insulters, fabricators and extremists like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Michael Savage, Joe Scarborough, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Michele Malkin, Greta Van Susteren, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, John Boehner, Michael Steele and Eric Cantor are ALL increasingly alienating younger and working class white, black, Hispanic and financially disadvantaged Americans at a time when the core supporters of the Republican Party have devolved into an irrational misanthropic mob. Not only do today's most vocal and visible Republicans lack a majority audience; they are mercilessly slicing and dicing one another as they fight to be the biggest fish in an increasingly smaller and smaller toxic pond.

I think Ingraham & Co. really DO believe that Obama is a "far left liberal". Their view of the real world has gotten so skewed that they really think that they are centrists.

Apparently the fact that some 80% of the country disagrees with them hasn't really been an issue in their little world.

So, yes, please keep it up, Laura; keep paddling that ice floe further and further from the mainland, and ignore those warming waters shrinking its size.

The country isn't aided by a feckless minority party, but the fastest way back to a productive debate may be through the "purification" of the Republican Party, as they desire, exiled from which a new party of reasonable people can form.

Cat Atomic's picture

Every time Republicans say, "we need to communicate more clearly", I just shake my head. They really don't get it.

They don't need to reorganize their propaganda networks, or come up with a killer PR angle for the same old crap-- they need to *listen*.

People have stopped paying attention to Republicans largely because they seem to be incapable of anything more than mindless rhetoric in service to the same old discredited scams. And what's their reaction? 'We need to dictate in a clearer voice'.

It's amazing.

Just goes to show that even the most convincing snake-oil salesman is still, at the end of the day, just a snake-oil salesman.

The GOP have been selling snake oil since the days of Nixon. Nobody's buying it anymore!

I want Laura Ingraham and all like-minded Republicans in the U.S. to keep thinking just like that. It would ensure the continued division of their party. And given their recent history of being unable to embrace anything that resembles a progressive posture, this could last a lot longer than they may believe. But still a good idea to keep on our toes.

By moving even further right, the Republicans will be shut out of the policy debates completely. The reality anyway is that the Democrats are now such a big tent party that the meaningful debate is already going on within the party between the moderates and the progressives. Which is fine with me.

Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein

To suggest Obama is is far-left is absurd, and virtually everything out of this woman's mouth is pure garbage. However if you are looking at history, she is right about the Right not needing to be more "moderate".
Reagan and GWB, the two most electorally successful Right-wing candidates in modern history are also the furthest to the right (ok GWB lost 2000 and possibly 2004 too, but how'd such an idiot even make it close). The Right has been much more successful in using fear and hate to mobilize the electorate.

The fact that there is an actual term "Reagan Democrat" is incongruent beyond comprehension, look at any social policy analysis of his presidency, he set forth an agenda of pure war on the poor. Yet he is routinely touted as a great statesman and even a humanitarian at some levels. One must look at context however to see why Reagan and Bush were elected, and the devastating results of having two enormous right-wing ideologues as recent Presidents have created some room to (thankfully) turn the country to the left.

as the current crop of Glenn Beck Republicans, the ones represented by this nut case extreme right mouthpiece.

That's how these things work, as they slide farther and farther to the right there are some who are just joining the fray, and enthusiastically call for a movement further right, and they've ended up so far out there now that it's completely out of touch with any reality whatsoever.

Bush didn't run as an extreme-right candidate at all, by the way, many of us knew exactly what he would be but many others didn't, he posed as a moderate successfully enough for some to actually buy it. Then 9/11 happened and everyone went temporarily insane, and all bets were off.

She's deluded if she thinks that the extreme right positions she and Limbaugh represent are going to win any elections for anyone, unless some day in the future the population somehow becomes more in tune with such extremism. Not likely any time soon.

Just one indication alone should discredit her: She thinks that McCain was way too moderate and can't imagine moving farther to the "left" than he was. Because, you know, Mr. "Bomb bomb bomb" was such a liberal peacenik. And all.

Teddy Phufner's picture

Reagan is arguably the furthest right of any President in modern history. Look at any reputable social policy analyst, left or right. You can't just go by rhetoric (but even by that standard Reagan was off-the charts right wing). Everyone campaigns as moderate, please, that's not what were talking about. You need to look at spending, at corporate influence, at covert fascist operations, at imperialist intentions, at propaganda campaigns, just to name some areas. Reagan scores super right wing in all these categories, much further right than Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Bush I and only comparably close is GWB.

Thankfully we have moved to the left because of the devastating effects of Reaganomics and Cowboy foreign policy but to suggest that it's delusional that we won't have another serious right wing candidate in the future is incorrect and dangerous.

The Dems should be picking up a Missouri Senate seat with the retirement of Kit Bond (R). I'm confused. I thought Kerry was "the most liberal Senator". That's what they said in 2004.

They wouldn't lie about that, would they? I'm sure if they made a statement like that, they had some quantitative way of measuring the liberalness of a Senator, right? It's not like they would just spuriously slap the label on whoever was running for President at the time as a meaningless talking point and scare-tactic for their base or anything, right?

Just keep thinking that way, Laura. Good.

If she thinks that the "liberal media" makes a naturally conservative country dislike someone like Bush, then they don't see any reason to change, only that "the media" has to change.

The fact is that the news media is mostly captive to the right wing Villager mentality, and it's actually been providing cover to Bush (think Judith Miller, at the "liberal" NYT, no less) and the country is actually far more progressive than it even appears. Electing Obama by a landslide should give them just a tiny clue.

David Brooks keeps saying now that the GOP will have to lose several more Presidential races before they get it. And for once, he may actually be right.

Everyone in this nation knows the Southern Baptist OWNS and controls the Republican Party...allows evangelicals to have a seat at the round table becuase they have such a large following. And... the Mormon's can stay back in the shadows but not have a voice. That fact being siad, anyone who lives in the south and isn't a Southern Baptist or evangelical knows these people believe they are GOD'S CHOOSEN PEOPLE for this day and time...and every opther denomination is WRONG. The denominational leaders, and ministers spew this propoganda and democrat hate from the pulpits over 20 years. Demonizing anyone who isn't Republican and Southern Baptist...or evangelical, or Mormon (only because we need their votes out west). The Baptist think they hold the keys to heaven and WILL NEVER admit they are wrong, and would NEVER come against the Rebublican Party because they have esteemed it to DIETY LEVEL: God the Father...God the Son....God the Holy Spirit...and God the Republican Party. For them to move from the far, far, radical, fanatical right, or admit they are wrong, would be spiritual BLASPHMY agasint the God Head...thus they are doomed for eternal hell fire and damnination. Laura, Coulter, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity, Scarbourough and the likes are making MILLIONS per year...being the mouth piece for the Southern Baptist Republcan party. So, they will say what they need to say to protect their own futures. The GOP is a dying entity because of the Southern Baptist agenda it adopted. THEY ARE ALL HYPOCRITES and they are responsible for their denominational annointed, endorsed politicans destorying the nation and the world economy. I see NO Christ Like attirbutes in any of them.

Right wing extremism is her solution to lead the Republican Party into a political version of nuclear winter.

surfjac's picture

its no wonder the GOP continues down that road to irrelevance with you dragging out that chestnut about Obama being the MOST LIBRUL SENATOR. Ummm, he wasn't, he came in at #39, very centrist by all accounts and just as John Kerry wasn't the MLS in 2004. Please shut the F up!

Twin Peaks and saw what happened to Laura Palmer.

On second thought, maybe she did. Laura died, but her cousin, who was a twin, (wink wink) got to do the part.

Maybe Ingraham will be a new graham cracker.

That nasally sounding voice wears me slick.

Who does the stupid bleach blonde think is listening to this hilarious Reslug Bullshit anymore?? They just love to whine and cry.

Were you aware that Laura Ingraham interfered with the 2004 Presidential election? On the morning of the vote she told her listeners on her radio show to all call the Democratic Voter Hotline in order to jam the phone system and make it difficult for democratic voters who needed help to get it. Another Republican posing as a representative of high moral values. She fits in perfectly with William Bennett the gambling addict, Rush Limbaugh the drug addict and Bill O'Reilley the pervert.

To me, Mr. Obama seems more like what I used to consider a "traditional Republican." He's calm, intelligent, pragmatic, and regardless of what Ms. Ingraham and others claim, quite conservative.

Incidentally, it's quite enlightening to read the brief biography of Ms. Ingraham on Wikipedia or some other relatively neutral source. My impression of her is that -- as now, as during the McCain campaign -- she has always made whatever claims were most convenient to whatever point she wanted to make at the moment.

please do not move. stay firmly stuck in the past. keep all your
bad old ideas completely to yourselves and the other 20% of your
loyal tin foil asshat knuckle-dragging yahoos.....................

"There are a lot of moderate Republicans out there giving advice saying okay the party needs to the middle."

And when the Repugs refuse to do so, they decide to switch parties in order to save their political @$$es...just ask Arlen Spector.

But, no...just keep on encouraging your party to go radical...it'll ensure the party's irrelevance for years to come!

St. Paul Scout's picture

I would like to see Democrats start referring to every Republican they talk about as, 'Senator So and So, hardly the most conservative Republican out there, ....'. Or better yet, 'Senator So and So, far to the left of a real conservative,.....'. Let's see how they start responding to that.

Lola Getz's picture

"Democrats gained power by going to the most liberal Senator in the U.S. Senate and they ran him for the Presidency and they won" Ingraham doesn't get? Yeah, sure, Laura - y'all stick to your guns and move further to the right. That's the ticket.

Bonkers's picture

Calling Bushco on endless mistakes, mismanagement, corruption, general stupidity, lies and really, in the end, just begging for them to come correct and lead rather than dictate is really NOT the same as calling Obama a terrorist fist-jabbing muslim fascist socialist. THAT'S an attack.
Unfounded, mean-spirited, unconstructive bullshit is what they are doing to President Obama while Bush, for the most part, was being critiqued on his actual job performance. (Yeah, I called him lots of insulting names. I tend to do that when somebody giggles and sneers at me for 8 long years)

Ahhhhh, F*CK these doofuses anyway. It's not like they care what anybody else thinks. Let's stop pretending that they actually want to have a rational conversation about anything.

I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.

so i do not have to listen to her whine.
i mean really, could you imagine having to listen to her shrill voice every day?

No, no, please don't move to the center, please, do not. Stay your grimey, fascistis, racistist, non-inclusives right out there on the fringe.
