From the Situation Room April 21, 2009. Jane Harman is upset that her civil liberties may have been violated and wants to see those transcripts of the NSA wiretaps unredacted. So how's the support of the NSA's wiretapping working out for you now Representative?

I like Glenn Greenwald's take on this:

So if I understand this correctly -- and I'm pretty sure I do -- when the U.S. Government eavesdropped for years on American citizens with no warrants and in violation of the law, that was "both legal and necessary" as well as "essential to U.S. national security," and it was the "despicable" whistle-blowers (such as Thomas Tamm) who disclosed that crime and the newspapers which reported it who should have been criminally investigated, but not the lawbreaking government officials. But when the U.S. Government legally and with warrants eavesdrops on Jane Harman, that is an outrageous invasion of privacy and a violent assault on her rights as an American citizen, and full-scale investigations must be commenced immediately to get to the bottom of this abuse of power. Behold Jane Harman's overnight transformation from Very Serious Champion of the Lawless Surveillance State to shrill civil liberties extremist.

I don't care what party she's from: anybody who didn't have a problem with the gutting of FISA can't cry foul now. It cuts both ways princess. This is the news story. Let her be the example. Jane should step down, release the tapes, or do anything else that keeps this story wiggling around in the mud. The FISA abuses are more damaging than the torture memos to the American republic and this story will keep them in front of the American people. Turn the heat up. She's got nothing to hide--I guess only terrorists and criminals do.

is hearsay from two unnamed sources who are, if they actually exist, breaking laws, very serious ones, by leaking classified information to a reporter. No one, it seems, is able to tell me what laws the congresswoman is alleged to have broken since it is apparent that she has no capacity in her position nor made any attempt to obstruct any investigation. Frankly I doubt that any such wiretap evidence exists. I used to respect Glen Greenwald but if this is what he calls journalism I guess I'll take a pass on his brand.

Ironic that a representative who voted to allow wiretappers to circumvent the law is now a victim of a wiretapping scandal? Don't call it journalism, that's what CQ and the NYtimes are doing; what Salon is doing is commentary. Is this a relevant story on the way a nation of laws operates?

before you attack greenwald. and remember the repug/dlc penchant for revenge. maybe you think they should break into GG's office. or should they just tap his phone and track his email.

as if they aren't already.

Did anyone listen to the NPR interview?

Not only were there non-denial denials, but she seemed to be saying that she couldn't remember whether or not she had these conversations but that if she did, they were with American citizens, despite the fact that she also had similar conversations with foreign citizens during the same time period.

It was bizarre, though I understand that she's allowed to put up a vigorous defense, and she may have a legitimate reason for responding in that way, so I can't take the apparent contradiction as an admission of guilt, but I'm not on a jury and it still seems fishy.

Also, this has nothing to do with FISA or the NSA--this was an FBI investigation, according to the WaPo.

no surprise that the fbi was investigating a Dem. but that does not exonerate her.

she says, give "ME" the tape and "I" will deside "what" is turned over to the people??? We do know the bushies taped any one they wanted. any one who was did not suck up to them or were looking into there crims. Take a look at E Spitzer. he was looking into walstreet and the banking boys. they cought him on a sting. sure they did. What, this dumbass din't think the wallstreet and banking boys would go to there bought out congerss people and ask for help to get this guy gone. He was a dumbass. These people can shoot a old man in the face and get a apogee from the old man they shot. We will never know just how many people the bushes taped. Just how many congress people who now take there orders from these people or the tape goes to fox news.
