Good old Hucka-Jesus decided to carry a little water for Wisconsin's Gov. Scott Walker by bashing the protesters and striking teachers there, of course all under the guise of Huckabee's "aw shucks", good old boy shtick he's down pat. I'm just wondering Huck, how many unions would Jesus want to see busted? Who's side do you think he'd be on here? The Koch brothers, or the workers?

These supposed "good Christians" like Huckabee astound me. Someone needs to remind Huckabee that unions gave us weekends, child labor laws, minimum wage, sick days, vacation, collective bargaining and workers having the ability to earn a living wage. Huckabee and his buddies at Fox want to start a class war between what's left of our dying middle class and the poor. That seems pretty un-Christ-like to me.

Here's something for Huckabee the next time he's in the mood to quote scripture while he's drawing that big paycheck from Fox while trying to turn working people against each other who should be on the same side of this fight.

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

JOHN REINIERS | Hernando Today
October 17, 2010
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the patron saint of the American labor movement, was a man of strong character. One has to look no further than the heroic way he coped with his crippling polio. This dreadful disease undoubtedly made him the consummate realist.
For example, although he had a lock on labor’s vote, he expressed caution about public sector unions. In a little-known letter he wrote to the president of the National Federation of Federal Employees in 1937, Roosevelt reasoned:
“… Meticulous attention should be paid to the special relationships and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the government. All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations … The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for … officials … to bind the employer … The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives …
“Particularly, I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place in the functions of any organization of government employees. Upon employees in the federal service rests the obligation to serve the whole people … This obligation is paramount … A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent … to prevent or obstruct … Government … Such action, looking toward the paralysis of Government … is unthinkable and intolerable.”
To get this in historical context, Congress enacted the landmark National Labor Relations Act (“Wagner Act”) in 1935 – the Magna Carta of the American labor movement. It excluded federal, state and local employees. It created the National Labor Relations Board to enforce the rights of labor. Employers were legally obligated to bargain collectively with their employees. In 1937 in a Senate speech, Roosevelt intoned, “The denial or observance of this right means the difference between despotism and democracy.”

The federal, state and local government workers have no right to collective bargaining! In 1959, the State of Wisconsin gave the state employees the privilege to do so. In 1963, President Kennedy granted the federal employees the privilege of collective bargaining. The governments of the United States, the individual states and all local gov’t operations have the right to rescind this privilege, at anytime, at their discretion.

My favorite has always been Teddy Roosevelt.

From A New Nationalism:
At many stages in the advance of humanity, this conflict between the men who possess more than they have earned and the men who have earned more than they possess is the central condition of progress. ....At every stage, and under all circumstances, the essence of the struggle is to equalize opportunity, destroy privilege, and give to the life and citizenship of every individual the highest possible value both to himself and to the commonwealth.

The public union employees of Wisconsin make on average of $89,000 including benefits. The average private sector employee makes $61,000 including benefits. Therefore the union employees make almost 50% more than the rest of us taxpayers. Yet, we pay their salaries. We taxpayers have to pay for our own healthcare. We also have to pay for the public union employees healthcare. But they do not pay for theirs or for ours. We taxpayers have to fund our own retirement accounts, if we have enough left over at the end of the month to put into retirement. We also have to fund the union employees retirement as well. They do not have to fund there own, or ours. The governor is asking for the public employees to pay for 12% of their healthcare. The taxpayer will pay for 88% of their healthcare. But this has led to massive demonstrations at the capital. The governor has asked the public employees to fund a portion of their pension plans. The taxpayer will pay the rest. Yet, once again this is unacceptable to the union employees. The union counters by saying that they have taken less wages, to receive great benefits. But if they are making 50% more than the rest of us, then how can they make that argument? We have a governor who is attempting to do what he is constitutionally required to do. Balance the budget. Of course, he could act like Jim Doyle and play accounting tricks and move money around to try to hide the deficit, but he won't do that, because he has character and integrity. Unlike the previous occupant. He is trying to protect the taxpayer of Wisconsin, who can no longer afford to pay for the extravagances of the union employees. When these public union employees say that they hate the governor, they hate the taxpayer as well, because they owe everything they have to the taxpayers of Wisconsin.

Nicole Belle's picture

But could you please provide links for those vast, sweeping generalizations that you're asserting?

I mean, could you show--apples to apples-- that people working in the private sector make less than public sector employees doing the same jobs? Because I don't think you can.

My mother has a MFC degree with a sub-specialty in drug and alcohol counseling. I know that she made significantly less working for the state of California than she would have had she opened up a private practice.

My brother is a public school elementary teacher. I'm fairly confident that he doesn't come close to your $89K per year in a state with a significantly higher cost of living. He's completing his doctorate right now and will hopefully be teaching at the university level soon. He's looking at private colleges because they're paying more than state colleges.

My husband is an attorney. He considered moving the the US Attorneys office at one time, because of the health and pension benefits and thinking of protecting his wife and children. However, he would have taken a significant cut in pay (upwards of 75K) to do so and in the end, we decided to stay where he was and be more aggressive with our retirement investing.

So, I'm curious where your figures come from. They don't hold up to my personal exposure to public sector jobs.

Misleading, to say the least. The government doesn't run Wal-Mart, or Jiffy-Lube, or McDonald's. Compare apples to apples, and you will find that public employees make less, including benefits, than their counterparts in the private sector

NS57's picture

you were there on the firing line when the company decided to lowball you and scew with your benefits. You and your fellow employees stated in no uncertain terms that this was not acceptable and your group would take industrial action including removal of services if these issues were not addressed. So you turned around to leave and realised that you were alone, that you had bupkiss for leverage. You got on your knees and said "please sir, ten more", totally shamed and embarassed.

You've hated those fuckin' unions ever since.

Your full of s**t!

Back in the 90's, all my rightwing in laws were laughing at me. While they were making money hand over fist with little or no professional education, I was working full time as a teacher, and full time as an adjunct professor in the evenings, just to make ends meet.

Their favorite meme was "your smarter than all of us put together, why do you waste your time working for peanuts with your brains and intellect? Go into the private sector." Now, after all of their republican heroes shipped their jobs overseas and sent them to the unemployment lines for 1-2 years, they are complaining because I have health insurance.

But thanks for stopping by and attacking the dying middle class that educates your children, gives you medical attention, and protects your communities; instead of talking about the rich who could be paying taxes with the trillions of our dollars they are sitting on.

Oh, and by the way, teachers all over the country have had their salaries cut by the thousands - including me - while we have to pay out of our own pockets for everything. We don't even have pencils and pens anymore. I have to buy supplies every week for work now. Because if I don't, the kids won't be preparred for the all important standardized bulls**t test, and it will be all my fault. We don't even have paper anymore. Last year we had to use scrap paper at the end of the year for our classes. And clueless idiots like you post this bulls**t.

Maybe one of those many students of mine who are pratcicing medicine today, or are in Med School will be the one that saves your mean, self-centered, self defeating a** someday.

Thanks for appreciating the work millions of your good fellow citizens have done in order to make your life better you stupid POS!

I'm not going to hold back anymore. I have had it with imbeciles like you.

So f*** you and the ignorant GOP horse you rode in on.

Oh, and by the way, I now pay thousands out of my own pocket for health insurance too!

Seeing as how the median income is right around 40 thousand a year and more and more benefits are diminishing every day I would call your numbers highly suspect. Beyond that you seem to point out an indictment of the private sector. They can make even a middle class income look lavish.

Heather..start a class war? It's been going on for sometime now, by the people that don't want to talk about it. Just look at any flow of wealth or income chart and you will see the real redistribution of income.

Paul's picture

You just go ahead and keep believing that self-serving nonsense. Are you a Walker administration staffer?

Your numbers cannot be supported by facts. You ignore the fact that every resident of the state is a beneficiary of the work done by state employees - if those jobs were privatized the cost of doing that work would, as always happens with privatization, significantly increase, increases that you as a taxpayer would pay for. Forget for the moment that being a teacher or a cop or an administrative assistant or whatever requires a much greater skill set (that cost money and time to obtain) than those required by a greeter at Wal-Mart, or that jobs in the public sector always pay less than an identical job in the private sector. Instead, just consider that those jobs must be done if the standard of living you surely expect to enjoy is to continue.

You are a member of society, a community, whether you want to be or not. You are probably incapable of individual existence, living completely without the benefits of living in society...it is unlikely you are willing or able to live in solitary isolation as a hermit, completely free of any dependencies of any kind upon others. Neither are you, I'm willing to bet, willing to emigrate to a country like Somalia, which is the embodiment of the values you are voicing. You will choose to continue living within, and deriving the benefits that accrue from living within, society. Yet, you seem to essentially expect or believe that you can get something for nothing. This may come as a shock to you, but you need to understand that their is no such thing as a free lunch. Somebody always pays, even if it is only the hapless pig that supplied the ham for the ham sandwhich you are eating. The only people who believe that their is such a thing as something for nothing are children and thieves. Children outgrow, and can be educated out of, such magical thinking. The sociopaths we call thieves never make that transition. You should give thought to what you reveal about yourself when you take the positions that you do.

Bluegal aka Fran's picture

"The laborer IS WORTHY of his hire."

Leviticus 19:13 Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him. Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight.

Deuteronomy 24:14 Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns.
Deuteronomy 24:15 Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.

Deuteronomy 25:4 Do not muzzle an ox [preventing it from eating at the same grain it is crushing] while it is treading out the grain. For a laborer is worthy of his wages.

Matthew 10:10 take no bag for the journey, or extra tunic, or sandals or a staff; for the worker is worth his keep.
Luke 10:7 Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

1 Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor and could not have existed had not labor first existed. Labor is the superior of capital and deserves much the higher consideration.

For people who claim to be Christian to be so against "social justice" is beyond the pale. I consider myself an atheist, but I feel I live closer to the "Christian Example" than most people I've met who wear their religion on their sleeves.

I was about 18 when I figured out that organized religion might be the single most destructive force in society. Nearly 30 years later I have not seen much evidence to convince me that that marijuana induced thought is wrong. Mike Huckabee is further support for that thesis...

As an aside, in the early days of the 2008 campaign I wondered about him, and thought "hmmm, maybe a righty I could agree with. After all he plays bass, too". Then I saw a web-site that tried to match your political views to the candidates positions. I agreed with 1% of what Huck said (according to the site - I only agreed with any Dem about 30%)...looks can be decieving. Most people who claim to be pious Christians are anything but...

Oh boy, you must be really out of touch with the fundies nutbags if you think that quote will get ANYWHERE. They found a way around it decades ago, or haven't you heard? Thus:

The "eye of a needle" was actually a gate in the Wall of Jerusalem, and it's just about big enough for a camel to get through if it kneels down and crawls. So while it's HARD for a camel to do it, it's not impossible. So rich people CAN go to heaven after all!! And anyone who says different is just some commie heathen pinko atheist!

Really. That is the argument you'll get from them if you pull that quote out. They really, simply, do not CARE what Jesus might have to say about anything. What they want for themselves is all that matters, and Jesus can go jump off a cliff if he doesn't given them everything they desire right NOW.

All American businesses (as well as all citizens) should be furious with the GOP/Tea/Fox/Koch agenda of trying to marginalize and destroy the middle class. Who buys the most? Who are your customers? The middle class! Say goodbye to restaurants, department stores, all businesses big and small. The only ones left will be giants like Koch and the outsourcers who will deal through foreign countries, and that’s what they want. The Tea/Koch/GOP/Birchers want complete power and want to take away everyone’s rights, lower their wages to rock bottom, take away their healthcare/Medicare, social security and squeeze them dry. They have zero loyalty or sense of reciprocal obligations to the tax payers who foot the bill for the privileges they enjoy, thanks to national, state and local governments that they have so easily corrupted. They have zero loyalty to their employees and see no reason why they should have any in the first place. They view the idea of nationhood as quaint and obsolescent and see themselves as holding rights of sovereignty that until now have only been accorded to nations. They are not guided by anything resembling conscience, being the collective equivalent of the individual sociopath. They will never reform themselves of their own doing. They will keep going until they either fail due to the self-defeating nature of their values and bejhavior, bring meaningful regulation down upon themselves or - more likely given that government no longer responds to the ill of the people - they are brought to justice in popular rebellion.

Great article by George Lakoff!

"What Conservatives Really Want"

Saturday 19 February 2011

by: George Lakoff, t r u t h o u t | Op-Ed

Dedicated to the peaceful protesters in Wisconsin, February 19, 2011.

The central issue in our political life is not being discussed. At stake is the moral basis of American democracy.

The individual issues are all too real: assaults on unions, public employees, women's rights, immigrants, the environment, health care, voting rights, food safety, pensions, prenatal care, science, public broadcasting and on and on.

Budget deficits are a ruse, as we've seen in Wisconsin, where the Governor turned a surplus into a deficit by providing corporate tax breaks, and then used the deficit as a ploy to break the unions, not just in Wisconsin, but seeking to be the first domino in a nationwide conservative movement.

Deficits can be addressed by raising revenue, plugging tax loopholes, putting people to work and developing the economy long-term in all the ways the president has discussed. But deficits are not what really matter to conservatives.

Conservatives really want to change the basis of American life, to make America run according to the conservative moral worldview in all areas of life."

This is not Walkers first underhanded financial-crisis-capitalism stunt !

When Scott walker was in Milwaukee, he blocked the Milwaukee county board, and fired court house public employees and replaced them because "there was a budget emergency" with non union guards.

An arbitrator ruled just last month that the so called 'budget emergency' was ginned up. The county did not have a true budget emergency.

Also the firing of the guards did not save the money Walker claimed it would.

Lot's more on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow show tonight !

Including:

An arbitrator declared Walker overstepped his authority - county must give the union guards their jobs back, with back pay !!

And... the private company Walker hired? Well they did not do that great a job, and their security chief had a criminal record that included jail time.

That's Wisconsin's new governor.

Finances are just a pretext for Walker.

Finances will just be a pretext all across the country where ever the other republican governors will copy Walker's financial-crisis-capitalism stunt !

Catholic Social Justice doctrine the right of workers to organize for better working conditions and a living wage is inherent in the concept of the sanctity of all human life, i.e., there can be no socially just society w/o these inherent worker rights. I think they got it from the Beatitudes. Huck should know the Sermon on the Mount as it is the foundamentl basis of Christ's teachings in the New testament. Now I know we can climb all over the Catholics for all sorts of horrendous abuses, but they are right on this one. On this issue they al agree ... you can look it up.

In the Ronald Reagan version, Jesus kicks the shit out the the poor, denies healing to the blind and the leper (pre-existing conditions), pisses in the wine, casts out angels, throws the first stone, power lunches with Herod and Pilate, tells the multitudes to fuck-off instead of multiplying the loaves and fishes (none of the socialist soup kitchen bullshit was going to happen on His watch!), makes a killing on his cut from the temple money changers and tax collectors, makes a sweet deal with Satan for dominion over the earth and takes pride in his crowning achievement of crucifying the poor on crosses of gold. All workers, government or otherwise, have the right to collective bargaining. As is being demonstrated in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and the others yet to come; local, state, and federal governments can be just as abusive and closed minded as private employers; many times worse. Governments write the laws and are not afraid to ignore them at will. In the present climate toward working class folks, their only option is to protest and ultimately strike when necessary.
