Hannity 'Apologizes' to Jon Stewart for 'Inadvertent Mistake' Airing the Wrong Protest Footage

Looks like Jon Stewart got the attention of Fox News with his segment criticizing Sean Hannity for showing footage of Glenn Beck's 9-12 rally and pretending it was crazy-eyes Michele Bachmann's teabagger health care protest. Hannity 'apologized,' if you want to call it that. It was a mistake...honest.
Hannity: He was correct. We screwed up. We aired some video of a rally in September, along with video from the actual event. It was an inadvertent mistake. But a mistake nonetheless.

As Media Matters reports, his apology might be taken seriously if Fox News didn't have a record of doing this sort of thing--Hannity video switch-up is only the tip of Fox News' video-doctoring iceberg.

Sean Hannity must think that people are gullible to want us to believe that it was "a mistake". Does he mean that two month old footage was just laying around? If the technicians at FoxNews are so incompetent, why aren't there other incidents of mistakes? The shows should be riddled with examples of where incorrect footage was used - and the other examples should be where clips were used that didn't even bear any resemblance to what was going on. But the mistake on Sean's show is where the clip is of a demonstration in Washington. Too much coincidence. Another example that proves that FoxNews is not a News organization. If it was, it would have some integrity.

On Matthews' lame little Ha Ha segment he presents this as a funny blooper, "they used the wrong tape", he says, rather than admit Fox tried to defraud the public.
A journalist hiding the truth, as Matthews frequently does, is just as untrustworthy as the fabricator.

Speaking of fraud, it is incomprehensible to me why the FCC and the DoJ tolerate the crimes against the public that FOX and others are continually perpetrating. Under RICO, there are a number of specific listed crimes, including wire, radio and television fraud. Under the law, intent does not need to be proven, only a continuing pattern of illegal acts that have occured in the preceeding 10 years. There are other hurdlesto proseuting RICO crimes, all of which these lying propagandists satisfy. Under the FCC, lisence holders have an oblogation to look after the public's interests. FOX is acting in malice and in malign intent as regards the public's interests, because it works to manipulate instead of inform. there is more than enough grounds and reason to go after these enterprises, I do not understand why they are allowed to continue as they do (and it is not a question of Constitutionally protected activities - fraud is not a protected activity). The point is, lacking all sense of social responsibility, FOX will not stop its lies and fraud unless forced to stop by competent authority.
It was not inadvertant mistake. It was like all things fox a deliberate attempt to mislead! These people are just paid fucking liars nothing more.

As I am video editor in television news, it is my opinion that Sean Hannity is full of shit.
An editor MUST be aware of the nuances/details of the video they are cutting, to make sure it accurately reflects the story on which they are working. Changes in the weather/sky color/foliage should be apparent.
The only way this could happen is if (and it could easily be proven/disproven by examining coverage earlier in the day) a story aired in an earlier program, mentioning the Capitol protest and then specifically referencing the 9/12 protest. This would still mean someone working on Hannity's show grabbed the tape without thought as to what it contained or checking the actual video. ("Here, just cue this up.")
Another oddity in Hannity's explanation is that he makes specific mention of the '40,000+' crowd - which suggests the video was, in fact, edited to match his commentary/make a point. This contradicts the possibility of it being a last-minute tape grab.
Finally, would we have seen Sean Hannity apologizing for the 'mistake' if Jon Stewart hadn't called him out on it? I doubt it - which means FOX/Hannity are fine with lying to the public as long as they don't get caught.

i work in tv. you have to know every single clip you would edit into a piece. they dont just appear by magic! the clips they pulled are cataloged and have something called metadata that are descriptions and copyright data that are built into the digital data on the video. fake noise uses clips all the time that are not part of a story, but to embellish their lies. beckinstein does it everyday.

... in a server-based environment. If your station is still tape-based, there is likely to be some annotation, but it depends on how thorough the editor is. Something from 9/12 could be logged as 'crowds, protest' or '9/12 protest capitol mall conservative'.
Nonetheless, it still comes down to professional standards observed by editors - you really have to be asleep at the wheel to mix cloudy/sunny footage. (Hell, I dislike using file video when the season doesn't match, like 'shopping' for quarterly consumer spending figures in June when the video shows Christmas decorations.)
in a corporate editing room, to access files, you need to use the metadata. fox is all digital, all files are on a secure server. you cant use clips without knowing the user rights, and other data pertinent to the clips you are using. when you get a job in the industry let us know, if not stfu.

In a news environment, there's no restriction on using our own footage (i.e., stuff we shot).
So if they make a mistake this stupid, the viewers are still supposed to trust them?
Well that's just it. The Faux viewers will not care. Their base will always be their base and then you have the people who tune in to watch the train wreck. The latter already know that Hannity is a fraud and liar. If Hannity started telling the truth the train wreck watchers would tune out because if Hannity has to tell the truth he would become Olbermann or Maddow and that just won't happen.

When you see the video comparisons you see that the recent clip had been intentionally augmented with additional flags and banners to try to disguise it and make it more contextually relevant. There is no way that video clip was a mistake.

Didn't Hannity try to do this same video editing bull shit when he interviewed Michael Moore by splicing in footage of an abandoned wing or hospital when trying to confront Moore about just how terrible Cuban hospitals really are. Moore being a film maker just laughed at him. Seems like there is a pattern of useing edited video in an attempt to mislead for political advantage. Pretty much the definition of propaganda.

On that particular show, Hannity claimed there were as many as 20,000 people at bachmann's rally. Bachmann, on that same show, claimed there were as many as 45,000. And Hannity let her get away with this lie. I've read that local officials said it was more like 5,000.
Further, Hannity is very smug with his "apology"....seems as if he's almost making a joke out of it.

then why did the video clip say Earlier up in the corner? Usually Fox puts the date of their video clips up in the corners but this clip purposely did not use the date marking. Hannity and his people were trying to deceive the audience but they got caught.

I actually do believe Hannity didn't know what he was watching was faked but the producers certainly did.
