Sam Seder filling in for Keith Olbermann on Countdown talked to former C&L contributor, FDL's Dave Dayden about his recent article at the News Desk -- In Unfolding War on Public Employees, State Lawmakers and Media Likely to Do the Work Themselves:

There’s no question that Republicans have introduced a bill which would require more transparency on state public pensions, and that they hope this would provide a road map in the states for where they can cut budgets; namely, on the backs of public employees. That doesn’t mean it will happen in exactly that way, however. And the idea that the next Congress will overhaul the 30s-era law allowing states to go bankrupt seems fanciful to me.

But I don’t think states or municipalities need much help from the federal government in their desire to rewrite public employee union contracts. There has been a concerted effort for years to demonize and delegitimize public employee unions, from both Republican pols and the media in general. This has left a distorted impression about greedy union contracts and well-paid government functionaries. So the new class of Republican governors would certainly want to capitalize on that by pleasing the public, who now favor things like wage freezes (which Obama just instituted at the federal level) and furloughs and bigger pension contributions, punishing those workers. And they are animated by a general hatred of unions, which have maintained their strength in the public sector while fading away in the private sector.

Alongside that, there are legitimate budget problems in the states. The National Conference of State Legislatures estimates a $118 billion dollar shortfall in state and municipal budgets in 2011. And there are certainly some states and municipalities with currently unfunded pension liabilities. While federal aid could offset some of that, there’s no chance it will happen – expect the House to pass, early next year, a resolution basically forbidding “bailouts” of the states. At that point, state governments will either have to cut spending or raise taxes to balance their budgets, which almost all of them are constitutionally required to do. With public employees – or rather, cops, firefighters, nurses, teachers, the people who prepare your state tax refund, the people who get you your driver’s license, the people who get the roads and bridges fixed and basically secure your safe passage through the commons – seen in a negative light, they will in many states be lined up for cuts.

There's much more there so go read the rest. Republicans continue to prove that they're willing to finish wrecking our economy for political gain and to get their dream fulfilled of busting every union we've got left in this country in the process.

It's amazing how they can justify this stuff to their base.

Banks can't fail but states can.
Wall Street contracts and mortgages are sacrosanct but union contracts are not.
Giving rich people money creates jobs but giving it to the poor doesn't.

If it's not clear to the Republican base by now who their reps work for it never will be. (Hint: It's not us)

They are dumber than a bag of rocks!

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

Oh nooo. They are very smart. They're getting away with it...and the American people are cheering.

They are evil-smart.
Evil is just as much of a cognitive function as kindness.
John Keats called it "negative capability".
In German it is called Shadenfreude, (evil joy).
Bernie Madoff called it a living.
Repugs call it their agenda.
Some call it war....Repugs call it patriotic.
Let's face it, Repugs are nothing more than nihilist WITH an agenda.....and apparently are better at getting what they want than Dems.

'Talk to the hand'

should all of this gnawing away at the democratic bastion of freedom and liberty, the bright shining beacon of justice and equality be brought down, will the repubes really accomplish what they want? And what, exactly, is that, to rebuild the us in their image? and just what is that image, neo-platonism? how can it exist (let alone survive) in the real world of today; does getting what they want amount to ushering in the second coming, provoking world war III and should that occur, do they really believe that they won't be left behind during the rapture? or is this just an exercise in futility amounting to some guttural, visceral, money and power is the new drug obsession or perhaps an expression of getting even with the middle class because of what they deludedly believe we did to nixon, or reagan, or bush, that their collective collapse and monomanicalism was, somehow, the democrats fault, and thus the majority in this country and abroad? Or, does all of this come down to collective insanity and if so, apparently CI is not a myth afterall!

I meant their base.

The republicans are sociopath's, who have stumbled onto a great con game - trickle down!

it because they have call screeners to make sure the lying blowhards only get calls from asskissing teabaggers. they get away with it because real Americans never get in their face. they get away with it because progressive groups never picket those radio stations, which are GOP and teabaggers HQ, or shame the local sponsors they depend on.

It's called the dissolution of every Democratic initiative of the last 60 years.

But, we must capitulate...or things will be worse.

As I wrote on my blog yesterday The Monday Memo: Advice for the New Congress there is a way to deal with the radical agenda of the tea baggers. We just need the balls to do it.

I know. Isn't it rather amazing that the Democrats in power who tend to have balls are the women?

The Democratic strategy is sing Kumbaya and hope that the other side will see the err of their ways.

Good luck with that.

actually all 1000+ of them have been dissing unions and public employees for years but it will get worse.

the big limbaugh hannity beck megastations that also do the college and pro sports are the ones to picket and whose local sponsors need to be called and asked WTF?

Radically Moderate ad infinitum's picture

forget that the Bush administration looted Federal Employees pension funds to help pay for the Iraq war invasion. Those funds have not been paid back, and there never was a plan to pay those funds back.

we have "trickle down", the "ownership society", all sorts of lies our fellow citizens swallow hook, line, and sinker; who knows what it will finally take to wake them the hell up?, maybe a broken axle on the truck from the crappy roads? and no money to fix it?

all i know is that i see masses of people tied into an economic system that screws them on a daily basis, and it seems they don't want to hear why they are in the pickle they are in.

seems that the human species has yet to break out of primitive status displays and power politics, our world is too complex for this kind of insanity, looks like the huge edifice of myths, superstitions, and propaganda is holding fast for the time being. maybe the best policy is just to roll over and play dead, try to keep from getting hurt, and be around to pick up the pieces when it all falls down.

the only choice seems to be worse and worser.

Hooray for the GOP! They share the same end-goal as al-Qaeda! Hooray!

Although they both have a different motive and will use different means, both share the same goal: Stopping the american government and the American way of life that we have enjoyed for decades.

The GOP will use political means with a motive of pure greed. Al-Qaeda uses violent means with a religious motive. But in the end both want the American government shut down and to end the American dream and way of life form the majority of Americans.

Shameful, disgusting, predictable.

Hooray for Republiqaeda!

So when are the majority of Americans who are having their world crumble actually going to wake up from their do-what-they-are-told existance and demand a "Government FOR THE PEOPLE" instead of "Government FOR THE WEALTHY PROPLE"? Maybe we can write that in next time around somewhere.

Now stop reading and go buy something with money you don't have!!!

It's time to give up capitalism and hand the power to the common man, hopefully peacefully. The longer we allow this upper class and its representatives, the so called gop, to call the shots, the masses are locked in misery and wage slavery.
