As Tommy Christopher over at Mediaite correctly pointed out, emergency contraception or what is known as the "morning after pill" is not an "abortion pill" and it's not covered by the Preventive Services Mandate that has all the right wingers worked up because the Catholic Church and other religious institutions are going to have to offer contraceptive benefits to their members and employees.

That didn't stop George Will from conflating the two on This Week with host George Stephanopoulos failing to correct him after he lied.

Here's more from Christopher -- This Week Host Lets George Will Lie About Contraceptive Mandate And ‘Abortion-Inducing Drugs’.

Transcript below the fold.

WILL: This is not about women's health. This is about providing 300,000 abortions a year. They -- Planned Parenthood cleverly cast this to say we are in the mammogram business. They're not in the mammogram business. They're in the referral of mammograms.

This showed two extraordinary things, George. First, the American left cares about ending wars and they care about poverty and they care about the environment. What they really care about, when they're not perfunctory, is when you touch abortion, and historians will marvel that American liberalism in the first part of the 21st century is defined as defense of abortion. Furthermore...

(CROSSTALK)

WILL: Second -- wait just a -- just a moment. Second, all these people describing themselves as pro-choice said it is illegitimate to choose not to be involved in abortion. And a much more important decision politically that was taken this week was the Obama administration saying that Catholic institutions have no choice -- and this was applauded by pro-choice people -- have no choice but to provide contraception, abortion-inducing drugs, and sterilization.

..maybe if Dana Loesch could pee on him...that would clear lil' George's bell.

It would also send this unwatchable show's ratings through the roof.

It's a win/win.

Does this pedantic twit ever say anything of any substance? All this pseudo-intellectual seems able to do is whine and invent arguements to justify it. Would that he follow Buchanan into oblivion! FREE BRADLEY MANNING!!!!

George Will and Newt have a lot in common. They both yank ideas out of their butts and proclaim them with such authority that the average viewer feels that what they say must be true. Just because someone can say something with a straight face doesn't mean they are sincere or knowledgeable.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Reform civilization? Good luck with that, we have all seen how quickly the thin veneer erodes when we have a disaster. Dr. Jeffery Sachs, of the UN, has shown everyone many ways to deal with these problems.

God forbid we listen to those who are in the know, unlike those little gutter snipes the Goerges.

This pseudo intellectual is just a fountain of Reich wing bull shit . I enjoy it when he and Krugman are both on the panel , Krugman always correcting Will on his history and facts , Will's butt puckers right up and his face turns red . Pretty funny , the only time I'll watch .

"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."

Krugman would get extra credit from me if he didn't know that.

I doubt Georgie Will can name him either.

He wrote the worst book about baseball in history. He's a little pussy boy who can't play baseball and doesn't know shit about it.

Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.

phillyjames's picture

"Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball" wasn't that bad. I rather enjoyed it. But I do agree with your assessment that he's...what you said, except that he does know something about baseball, which you can't say for his political ideas. True, I doubt he could play a backyard family game to save his life. I always thought he was the kind of guy who doesn't like to sweat or get dirty.

do they continue to use the meme "pro-abortion?" And why does the media let them get away with it? NOBODY is pro-abortion, you idiot. The day abortion become mandatory that'll be big news. Until then, it's CHOICE. It's the so-called pro-lifers who want a government MANDATE.

GNUGUY's picture

They do not give a shit about life, they could care less if that baby starves to death or dies of unavailable health care, they do not care if that child can get a decent education or if he can support himself with a decent job. They are pro pregnancy because once that ends that child can beg in the street and sniff glue to rid themselves of the hunger pains.

dixie blood's picture

They are also pro pregnancy because they are afraid someone will abort the next coming of Jebus. The funny part is that they don't believe their god can get this done without their stupid ass help.

Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.

should hospitals be able to ban blood transfusions if some of it's employees are jehovas? should we cut any public funding that goes towards transfusions and blood banks. is the red cross anti-religion? these kind of arguments are so stupid it blows the mind. think sarah palin, nobody should be giving out condoms, it is immoral. my teenager is pregnant out of wedlock, oh well that's a better alternative to condoms.

It's a trap. They don't want birth control of any sort and they would love to outlaw abortions for just about any reason. Yet they are all about Viagra and such. Bottom line is they want men to be able to do the deed throughout their entire lives and they want women to get pregnant and have babies just as long as nature will allow. Sounds like they want guys to keep doing it and women to have always have to live with the consequences. What is it about women that the republicans dislike so much? As if we don't have enough humans crowding this planet already.

Does anyone complain if their insurance covers Viagra? Is any religion against that? I sure haven't heard anything about it. If men can get enhancers, then women can get birth control. It's only fair.

What do Catholics think about vasectomies? Are they cool with that? It is a form of birth control. What about condoms, what do Catholics think of them?

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

No, the Catholic Church isn't cool with anything that interferes with procreation.

Will's first sentence is his biggest lie.

Contraception is key to a woman's health. My grandmother, Anna Agnes Carroll Bradley, good Catholic that she was, married at age 30 and pumped out four boys in four years, and was pregnant again when the entire family came down with pneumonia in 1926. (Way before antibiotics-the only only way to survive it was to tough it out.)

Her already born children toughed it out. Her husband, who actually had been gassed In WWI and was missing parts of his lungs, toughed it out.

She was was the only one who died, and took the fetus within her to her grave.

If she'd had the means to recover from one pregnancy before embarking on another....

She might have survived.

I have a feeling republican men would take better care of their broodmares than they would women. I doubt they would want their mares to reproduce every time they came into their estrus cycle. And I also doubt they would risk losing a good mare if she was having a dangerous time during her pregnancy. A good mare is a valuable asset. Ask Newt what he would do with a woman who was no longer an asset to him. I think we know.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

My thanks to Bill Hicks for that line, but it's true: there is nothing quite like the gobsmacking gall of a privileged white male pontificating about what women should do with their bodies. How many times does history have to tell us that the first and best thing you do to elevate any society beyond brute poverty and desperation is to give women control over their reproductive cycle? Of course, George couldn't give a shit about societal betterment or progress of any kind, safe the brand of personal progress that guarantees that morons like stephanopolous offer him an unimpeachable bully pulpit every fucking week to spout his unalloyed moronism--odorous word salad that we are supposed to take seriously because it emanates from just above a bow tie.

jwf's picture

great if Will's bow tie spun like a propeller every time he lied. He'd fly like a Cessna.

Thanks for that.

George Will also said that abortions have to be subsidized by the federal government. Another bald face lie.

Captain Kangaroo's picture

historians will marvel that American liberalism in the first part of the 21st century is defined as defense of abortion.

I'm afraid not George. I think what historians will marvel at is how the Right Wing claim to be pro life yet are ready at the drop of a hat to execute people that are convicted with shitty evidence or are mentally retarded or otherwise were convicted by mistake and how the Right Wing are ready to go to war for no good reason and kill hundreds of thousands of people and call themselves pro life. Yep, that is what they will marvel at George. In face they are marveling at it right now.

I keep picturing George Will, David Brooks, Rush Limbaugh, Rick Santorum, KKKarl Rove, and many other pasty white right wing hacks finding themselves 9 months pregnant, 17, and unmarried. What would they do?

lsamsa's picture

that said 'pasty white ring hacks' wouldn't find themselves 9 months pregnant, 17, and unmarried...they would have had an abortion without nary a thought.

George Will: the man who lost his integrity but kept his thesaurus...

lsamsa's picture

about those 'abortion-inducing drugs'...

This about how Plan B works...

'Plan B is simple to use.
And remember the sooner you take it the more effective it is.
Plan B is two pills which you take together. If taken within 72 hours, it prevents pregnancy by doing one of three things:
Temporarily stops the release of an egg from the ovary
Prevents fertilization
Prevents a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus
Plan B is not an abortion pill—if you take plan B you will not be terminating a pregnancy.
If you are already pregnant and take plan B, there’s no evidence that plan B will harm you or the fetus.'

In Canada, Plan B is sold OTC. That just might make your head explode George.

capnpaco's picture
Hmm

I'm fine with the morning after pill being available over the counter, and I understand that fertilized eggs fail to attach to the uterus quite often just in the natural course of things, but I don't see how taking a pill that stops that attachment isn't a form of abortion. Preventing fertilization is a completely different story, but actively taking steps to stop an already fertilized egg from surviving has to count as abortion, no?

I'm all for both contraception pills and abortion pills. As a matter of names, calling RU486 an abortion pill sounds pretty accurate to me.

phillyjames's picture

I'm sick to death of that boot licking Stephanopoulos. Never liked the little twerp, or his hair.

Watching the interactions between Mr. Great Hair and Mr. Will, I don't even think Will likes him.

...is irrelevant. The point is that it provides women with a way to control their own bodies and their own lives. Are you against that?

...I'm pretty sure the Catholic Church is exempted from providing this service. AND, even institutions required to comply will NOT have to take their employees by the hand to their abortion clinic appointment or the pharmacy for their contraceptives...SHAM issue as usual be exploited by the right and alll "good Catholics" (wink, wink using contraceptives quietly) must hop on board! There is a "H" word for that!
